Thank you Sir. I've just got my first ever grinder and was on my way to get a disc to cut through my bathroom wall to fix a leaking pipe. So i figured I watch a video first to see which disc to get as I know absolutely nothing about grinders. This video has helped me a lot now I know what to get.
Thanks for the good intro to grinding discs. I just bought a cheap grinder from Harbor Freight and it had just one course disk with it. I've seen some of the discs you showed, but didn't know their applications. Now I do! Cheers, Roy Lewis Buffalo, New York USA
Back when I was a young nooblet, so maybe 4-5 years ago, I had the idea of cutting open a refridgerent compressor with an angle grinder. Genious me had no idea what mess I was getting myself into, I started off with a hacksaw and after a few seconds I'm like oh hell no. So I bust out the trusty old makita angle grinder. Now being a nooblet I had no idea that there were different types of discs availible. So I proceeded to cut through at least 1/4 inch of steel with a grinding disc. That took. forrrrreverrrrrrr. The amount of dust I made in the basement was insane. I learned my lesson though, having the correct tool always makes the job easier.
Useful info and thanks for making it available. Another disc I have found useful is the non-woven stripper type. Takes paint or rust off very quickly like a flap disc, but is somewhat soft and pliable so will do curves and edges without digging into the metal
Nice one, haven't done any angle grinding since the early 90's and back then a big diamond disc was about £130. I have two 8mm steel bolts to cut on an exhaust muffler so wondered which blade to use. Thanks for the reminder mate and great tutorial for others, have a great weekend there.
I remember when diamond disc were very expensive too ;-) For cutting the exhaust muffler I'd go for a 1mm thick slitting disc, they are excellent at cutting steel/stainless steel. Thanks for the comments ;-)

Hi, a grinder revolves at high speed, often 10,000 RPM. A multi tool simply oscillates (moves from side to side). A grinder can cut much tougher materials than a multi-tool.
This is not advisable, because the Integrity of the flat disk will be compromised and it will tend to shatter at the high speeds in which the grinder spin it.
Hello great video. Could you please explain the meaning of the measurements on the disk? I believe it's 113x1x22.23 I understand sometimes disc measurements has four like: 100x20x10x2.7
Not sure about the discs with 4 numbers, but a regular disc will have the overall diameter (113mm) 1mm is the thickness of the disc 22.2mm is the bore of the disc 👍
@ultimatehandyman RYOBI. i've since figured out that the type of guard is for grinding disks so i guess the type of disk isnt reaaly an isssue with shape but the guard. so now that you have told me about the hole, im going to try and find disks with a bigger hole cause my disk has a hole thats too small. thanks for telling me.
Can you reccomend a disc for cutting pvc window frame? Does it matter which way i draw the blade when cutting plastic? should i draw it towards me or cut away from me? Does this differ on which way the blade turns in the first place?
Hi. Many thanks for the great advice !!! However, I have 2 doubts I can't find answers to. I've just bought a Makita M9507B 115 mm. Its spindle is 21.16 mm. Do all makes of 115 mm discs have this same spindle diameter or do I have to get only Makita discs? And here's another query: I have been given a smaller diameter Bosch disc, in fact, 110 mm, whose hole is greater than 21.16 mm. So, do spacer washers (shims ?) exist so that it would fit my Makita snuggly and prevent it from wobbling, perhaps dangerously ? Perhaps there are tapered locked nuts to take up the space? I'd be very grateful for your guidance.
I'm not sure about this. Normally the grinder bore is 22mm or more specifically 22.2mm I remember years ago buying a diamond disc and the bore was too small for my grinder, but I managed to bore it out to 22.2mm I definitely would not try using any kind of spacer, I'm afraid you might have to source some discs with the correct diameter bore (perhaps in some countries they use different size flanges and discs)
No, you should never do that, as they are designed to run at different speeds, this video is worth watching- ruclips.net/video/1TFisMcDrH4/видео.html Thanks for the comment 👍
I am new with power tools so there are no videos or lessons like this one . one video instead of multiple different types of disk is common sense . thanks
I want to buy an angle grinder, but i have no idea what diameter i have to buy. The main things i want to do with it is cleaning metal sufaces with a disk and use a wire brush to remove rust and old paint. And ofcourse cutting little things. So what are te pros and cons of a large or a small disk?
Larger ones are heavier and only really suited for large cutting jobs. For cutting small jobs, rust removal or grinding a 4.5 inch grinder is suitable for most applications and is light enough to use all day long without and fatigue issues- larger grinders are much heavier!
I bought an angle grinder recently and bought some flexible multi purpose fibre discs with it. the discs though are thin and bendy and when fitted to the angle grinder are too floppy. I believe i require a plastic backing disc to use them or should i just buy a more solid one-piece disc like the ones in your video?
You can basically cut anything with an angle grinder! Someone once said that they used a diamond blade in a grinder for cutting acrylic- but I have not tried it on acrylic or any other type of plastic I'm afraid. Have you considered using a reciprocating saw?
Those diamond discs are the bollocks. Bought a cheap one for less than £2 and it went through the tiles like they weren't there. Creates a hell of a mess though so be sure to close the door to isolate clean up to just one room!
As far as I am aware it does not matter which way the disc is installed unless there is a direction arrow on the disc. If the disc is depressed, then it will of course only fit the one way. Diamond discs often have a directional arrow on them, but that is more to do with getting more life from the disc rather than a safety issue (if you keep reversing the direction of the disc it wears out faster)
No, I'd go and get another disc to be honest. It might work, but it might also cause the disc to burst with the heat build up. Just do a Google search for "angle grinder accidents", that will persuade you to get the correct disc ;-) Thanks for the comment
Thanks - this was useful. A question: Can I use 100mm discs on a grinder that can take 125mm discs? I dont want to be constrained by disc availability in locality- I should be able to use both sizes
Sudhir Brahma You should be able to as long as the bore size and RPM are the same. You should never spin a disc faster than the maximum RPM printed on the disc or try to attach a disc that is the incorrect bore size ;-)

I've got an old box water tank in the loft its not used any more no water inside it nothing connected to it either, I want to get rid of it but its too big to get through my loft hatch, what would you do to get it out? to me the simplest way would be to cut it up. what disc would you use? thanks in advance.
If the water tank is metal I would not use a grinder as it can easily catch fire! A reciprocating saw might be the best bet, I have cut galvanised 3 foot square ducting out using a reciprocating saw and it was fairly easy, but even then I'd keep a fire extinguisher at hand.
Bernard Poon They can be used when cutting through reinforced concrete but I do not know anyone that uses them to cut solely through metal as abrasive discs work much better on metal.
What disk would you use to take paint off a trailer? I'm trying to restore an older trailer, half of its rusting and the other half still has paint on it. Like the vids, keep up the good work.
A wire brush attachment is probably best as that will not damage the metal, but the wires do fly out of the brush and embed themselves into your clothes etc. You can also use a flexible sanding pad and fine grade paper, although it will clog quickly! You can see a job we did here on some railings- www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/renovate_railings.htm
Thanks, I have already done that and the process is extremely slow. One cubic ft takes 45 minutes if longer to get too metal. Its not worth it. This is an older goose neck trailer, I might just have to blast the entire thing. I have to get it down to bare metal, so the Por15 will stick

None of them. There are some blades available that will cut wood, but many of the grinder manufacturers do not recommend using them. However if you want to shape some timber a flexible backing pad and sanding disc work well- ruclips.net/video/RLpv3JE9gDo/видео.html
