- The Terra Blade rework... for better or for worse? Terraria 1.4.4 the labour of love update is here! And comes with a plethora of new weapon reworks which completely shake up the balance of the game! In todays video, we take a look at the Terra Blade rework which has completely overhauled the functionality of the Terra Blade. This has been seen as slightly controverial as the rework itself actually nerfed a bunch of its stats, and as this might just be the most iconic weapon in Terraria, it seems strange to nerf it. So the question is, has its other changes made actually buffed the weapon, or nerfed... the results are interesting.

What are you guys thoughts on the Terra Blade rework?
I think it's better as it has way more range and speed although I miss the distance the beam travelled.
It forces you to play as more of a melee character, which was a necessary change.
Definitely a buff mainly because of the infinite pierce and aoe of the projectile. I recently played through terraria focusing on melee and the terra blade is strong enough to shred the moon lord unlike before
Great amazing crowd control and easier use but it does do less damage on single
I love it so much, and surprisingly it’s valid for moon lord
What's interesting is that the new terrablade fires a projectile with every single swing, something that the old terrablade and other projectile swords don't do. Basically the effect this has is that melee speed is more effective at increasing damage for the new terrablade then usual. So if you're looking for solid mathematical proof of a buff then a melee speed build is what you're after.
I always thought melee speed was better with this update
@@I_Am_The_Microwave considering you can autoswing anything without needing to use an accessory slot for it, attack speed is actually useful for everyone now :) plus, it's way quiter not having to spam click
@@I_Am_The_Microwave on paper +4% Damage, +4% Crit chance, and +4% Melee speed are virtually mathematically identical, you can imagine however that a weapon that already has a high base stat would benefit more from having that stat raised. For example a weapon with "50 speed" and 10 damage will benefit from 10% melee speed more then 10% melee damage; 5 additional speed over 1 additional damage. Yet even still a small damage increase like by 1 will still become more effective if the weapon applies that 1 extra damage very very quickly, that basically shows that damage, speed, and crit chance will stack multiplicitively. Thus when deciding what to reforge your accessories to you should go with 2x Menacing, 2× Violent, and 2× Lucky rather then all Menacing because the 3 different stats will essentially multiply
I agree!- It truly shows how this weapon can be utilize the multiple ways now!
I in general though that it’s just better than the original and does more dos despite the massive base dmg nerf
Cool that the nights edge and the excalibur combines, the projectile of the nights edge, and the aoe effect from the excalibur, makes the terra blade.
The night’s edge has an AOE too.
@@locrianphantom3547 but excalibur is larger
@@locrianphantom3547 i meant the main purpose, usually if you want aoe damage you just use the excalibur
@Kola AreaOfEffect, they mean the giant “energy” around the blade whenever you swing it
long projectile range of TNE, high speed of TE, high sword range of TE, crowd control capability of both.
The Terrablade feels so much better now, it's actually crazy. And it already was my favourite weapon before the rework!
Yep can easily take you to moon lord and anyone who says it's a nerf is just blinded by nostalgia edit it's projectile fires every swing
@@placeheld9232 fr
@@placeheld9232 i actually beat moon lord with it in my recent playthrough
@@Not_Mahito yeah you can see it on some other terra blade vids ruclips.net/video/eii6TaHvD8E/видео.html
@@placeheld9232 its nerfed unless you spend countless hours gathering accessories to get enough melee speed to make up for it.
Something important to mention is that the new projectiles happen each swing, not at a set interval while using the weapon. This means that now, swing speed modifiers and reforges can now drastically improve the damage much more than flat damage increases.
true, u can get really high dps
The old one’s rate of firing projectiles actually _decreased_ as its melee speed increased.
The new terrablade feels like an overall buff due to a massive increase in it's defensive utility, quality of life/ease of use at the slight costs of single target DPS.
u forgot - it has a slash every swing, instead of having a shoot time, use higher melee speed buff and its even better
I find it harder to use because the projectiles are too wide now they tend to get stuck in some of the most ridiculous terrain especially in tight spaces
@@RaidenKaiser then slap em. Usually when that happens ur in a cave and the terra blade can just kill most of not all cave creatures with it's melee. Not to mention the increased melee range.
Unless ur talking about the dungeon then just use the influx weaver it was better than the old terrablade anyways.
I mean it’s a bit more then a slight loss of damage for single targets.
@@kindahungry8505 was referring to post plentera bosses like golem
The increased velocity and size of the projectile just makes it infinitely easier to hit enemies with, and in 99% of realistic scenarios you're going to be dealing more damage against an opponent
Someone once compared the Terra Blade to the Influx Waiver, and I gathered that TB is better for crowd control while IW is better for single targets. This rework only reinforces that the Terra Blade was always meant for swarms of enemies
Influx Waver is good against slow moving targets though, it's damage potential drops off greatly when fighting EoL because the projectiles that spawn after hitting her will usually miss.
but now it shreds moon lord
@@thegamingraptor9113 I'm not saying that it's ONLY good for invasions and such, I'm just saying that's where the changes are most powerful
@@TheGreatCyberwolf Alright thx for letting me know
Influx waver’s gas, the old buffed terrablade actually outperformed it in the single target department. It needs a buff honestly.
I just realized the old ones army is going to be easier with the terrablade, going for Betsy weapon might be worth the time to get now

@@SomeCowguy ur insane if you actually think lights bane is as good as volcano just because it has a shitty damage slash lmao. its a preboss weapon
I think it's better now. Wider range is really good and the speed is a lot more.
Not every weapon needs to be good against bosses, it being great for the pilars alone makes it a great secondary melee weapon.
You obviously haven't seen the video of the new Terra Blade destroying Moon Lord on Master Mode, For the Worthy.
But if you learned how to aim it, it was already good for both bosses and crowds…
@@Razor1473 did you not watch the video and see how the old terra blade literally sucked balls at mob clearing compared to now?
@@zenith9849 Yeah, but you’re wrong, it could handle mobs just fine. New terrablade is marginally better, but it could handle crowds too.
@@Razor1473 yeah good luck consistently aiming the old thin ass projectile on a boss that actually requires you to dodge. You can say "just learn to aim lul" all you want, even the best players aren't hitting 100% of their shots on a boss like Empress, Moonlord, and especially Fishron. If you did have really good aim before, your DPS is probably going to be about the same, and everyone else's is going to be way higher.
There's also the fact that it's outright better against events, since it has way more pierce, making it so that you don't get overwhelmed, which could happen with the old terrablade.
I love both the old and new Terra Blade ;)
Keep it up sock🦆
✌️
No way
Phantasm real
That's true i love them both too!
Dark stacking tho
A lot of the melee weapon changes feel like a move away from precision-based weapons towards wide, sweeping ones, which I think will help the melee class feel more melee and less ranged, and I'm very happy with that.
It definitely makes actually using the swords as swords much more viable.
The boost to both projectile speed and size make it far, FAR more viable against fast-moving targets like empress, and small targets like the weak spots on moon lord, which the old terra blade traditionally struggled with.
Not to mention, the old terra blade’s projectile actually fired slower the faster its melee speed is. The current one is guaranteed to fire a projectile with every swing, meaning, at least theoretically, the new one is capable of higher DPS if your build prioritizes melee speed over damage boosts.
Amazing upload schedule and such high quality, keep it up!
I think it's better than it was before. I never tried the old version of the weapon, but I did go out of my way to get it during my Terraria playthrough and it not only became one of my favorite weapons but it also made the pillars infinitely easier because of the reasons you mentioned. I plan to do another playthrough but on expert mode, and I'm gonna make sure I use the swords from the Terra Blade's crafting tree as part of my progression.
To elaborate on Golem a bit more; During the first phase, the old Terra Blade could be used to lock down one fist at close range while the beam aims at either the other fist or the head. This led to some lopsided damage being dealt to his pieces, but not really a big deal. The new Terra Blade is now practically guaranteed to hit all three pieces at all times.
the old terrablade imo was "that sword that crafts zenith" but now its a nice sword that can be used all the way through when you get it and in the moonlord fight
I used it to be the moon lord in master mode for the first time over the solar weapons. The amazing range and speed make it better than any other option once it is available, in my opinion.
I personally think it's for the better, since it gives the Terra Blade a better use after the Influx Waver, which is pretty much right after you get the Terra Blade.
The influx waver has never been comparable to the terra blade, stfu
That's exactly what I thought
The new terrablade is op. It's honestly my perferd weapon to fighting moonlord now. The waves are so big you can easily hit more than 1 eye at once. And if your close to one of the eyes, your effective DPS can triple!
The large waves are also another thing I would like to talk about. Because of their shear size, missing your target is practically impossible. Meaning that also yes the dps is lower, it's more than made up for but making it easier to reach the theoretically dps. Target dummies aren't exactally the hardest things to hit.
I love the new sword updates, especially the nights edge
I legit killed the wof in like 10 seconds using the new nights edge
I was doing a mele playthrough before 1.4.4 and was really struggling against the wof using the sunfury and nights edge having done 4 tries. After the 1.4.4 update I beat it first try using the nights edge. Just a huge buff.
clearly buffed..
More range, Larger projectile, more piercing.
The Thing i just love about the new Terrablade is that Melee Speed now also affects the projectiles it just feels so good to use it now with a speed build
Love this weapon regardless of buff or nerd
Heh
*Nerd*
Sorry for this but that's *sus*
💪 or 🤓
Although the overall as you said was lowered it dowsn't fall frome grace and instead has rised up even more. First I used it against is the duke fishron, because of its range the arc-like swing his range attacks are no problem now, the only thing you need to do is dodge while shooting waves at him. One more great use of this is against events like the martian madness and the pirates, its range really stands out a lot. Also for the pillars, it so damn good. Especially in the solar pillar where there are those fireballs falling, with the continious swing of the terra blade, you can protect yourself from the fireballs and demolish the incoming enemies with the wave attack at the same time. I really wanted to keep it even at post moonlord because I liked the design more than zenith but I'm not so confident if it can defeat moonlord, anyone tried it yet? I might try it later.
For a blade that carries the name of the game, I'd say they did it big justice.
I do not think it has been buffed or nerfed more of a rework that changes it complete from pervious version, but it do think that it is a lot better now and the animations looks better.
It honestly feels better now. It singlehandedly carried me from right after mechdusa (shimmered a terra toilet from a Jungle Mimic for the broken hero sword pre-plantera, I believe this has been patched) all the way to getting the Daybreak on master mode everything seed. I even preferred the Terra Blade over the Solar Eruption, it just felt cooler and more consistent in aiming, though obviously the Daybreak beat it out for bosses.
What peeves me is the screen-locked projectiles on the true nights edge. Feels like a nightmare.
Ikr, hurts me so much fr
Something also worth mentioning is that the projectiles are now affected my melee speed, and that can make melee attack speed builds do drastically more dps than damage or crit builds
I've yet to try this weapon out because I started a brand new playthrough using melee class recently but from the looks of it, it seems a lot better than it used to be
I'm only using the Terra Blade and the Horseman's Blade. Melting wave after wave of enemies feel so good!
could you perhaps do a video on a summon item called the optic staff? i feel like this summon is pretty much forgotten everyone, including me, since its usually outshined by blade staff and sanguine staff. I remember using it before blade staff and sanguine staff was added and thought it was pretty decent in my experience, but i would to hear someone elses thoughts on this summon weapon.
2:04 Fun Fact, This makes enemies knockback towards you, lol
It's definitely stronger now the actual reason it's arguably nerfed it's range now being limited to enemies on screen as opposed to the previous near infinite range
Good luck hitting anything off screen with that slow ass projectile though
on a different note, my favorite weapon the Star Wrath got a buff with the falling stars.
Great quality Socks!
you should do a video on the sergeant united shield
Importantly, the much larger projectile makes it much more consistent
Hey bro I love the concept that you’ve been putting out for a while maybe we could get an outro because after the end of the video it’s kind of jarring to just stop hearing some thing
Massive buff. You would need to hit your target for the DPS to matter. This new Terrablade is far easier to hit enemies. Try fighting Duke Fishron with the old Terrablade. Good luck. Now it's a breeze
i mean, idk about anyone else, but im completely fine with this version, i recall it basically feeling like everyone would replace it right after with influx waver which they said was basically better, so by that logic this rework is great, plus it replaces a sorta previously overdone feeling straight sword beam projectile with one completely new
Good thoughts. I concur. Will have to try it on the pillars.
what accessories do have equipped and armor for the terra blade to go that quick
the old one is still very memorable to me but this does look cool
No sword feels more awesome to get and use than the Terra blade. Yes the zenith is a better sword, but to get it you mostly just grind bosses or events. While the terra blade is a sword that actually encapsulates the journey of making the blade from the volcano to the nights edge and finally the terra blade.
I don't think it's damage should've been nerfed that much since it is a post mech weapon If I remember correctly
post-plantera, broken hero sword won't drop from mothrons before then
Its effect is now entirely based on how fast your swing speed is, whereas before it was a strict timer. So Yeah while its damage was "nerfed" statistically, it can reach much better average numbers with faster swing speed.
post plantera.
In 1.4.1, the terra blade was moved to post-plantera, the weapons used to craft it are still post-mechs though
You should make a video on the **sand gun**. Seriously. It has DPS compared to post-Skeletron and early Hardmore weapons, is obtainable pre-boss and has infinite pierce if you use corrupt sand as ammo. It's easily the best weapon for the BoC or EoW and is massively underrated. Just make sure to put torches or minecart rails on the bottom of your arena before you begin so it doesn't spawn snow
How to cheese any boss, any difficulty, any seed, any update with any of your favorite class without buffs. This is also fully legit, no glitches on single or multiplayer.
If so then read the following, and yes this sounds way too good:
Step 1: Get good starter loot of any seed of your choice. Get loot Preferably on classic. If you can, beat BoC, EoW, BoC classic. Craft better gear, then beat on expert or even master. Maybe some old ones army as well.
Step 2: Get dungeon loot and go to underworld for shadow chests to get obsidian potions for hellstone ore to craft better gear. Then beat WoF classic mode, get ores. Probably titanium with atleast one minion and fast DPS. Maybe some old ones army as well again.
Step 3: Beat destroyer with atleast one minion and fast attack speed. You can cheese any boss with old ones army to have like 20 sentries. Beat mechs as well and upgrade your loot easily. Maybe go to expert and get better loot or master mode, have some fun.
Step 4: Beat plantera classic and golem. Then if you can, beat cultists and pillars are super easy. If not, get upgrades and it should be easy with expert or master mode loot. Upgrade loot just get better items whenever needed.
Step 5: Cheese moonlord classic mode. You can use old ones army so you have like 20 sentries with squires armor or some other armor or class you prefer. The sentries are OP and should help a lot. No buffs needed, you have expert mode and master mode loot with dozens of sentires on classic. Worked super easily for me and defeated moon lord first try but I did not use sentries.
Step 6: Mega chees moon lord master mode with zenith, last prism, anything you have. If you want to take this a few steps farther, use zenith, dozens of sentires, minions and buffs, arena, stack many meowmeres strait up, and use zenith. I think this is overkill now.
Step 7: Get your favorite loadout. I have a really good and super fun build idea for anyone. I used the Valhalla knights set, squires shield, the brain of confusion, worm scarf, the rest pure damage with celestial shell, Santa n-k mount, single stardust cell minion or minion of your choice, a bunch of lunar portal staffs, clinger staff, crimson rod, just spam things like a rainbow rod, frost hydra, they don't take sentry slots so you can have like 8, and spamming vampire knifes to heal you. I predict that you should get around 12k, single target DPS? Not sure, plus you are super tanky with super rapid healing and it is my new favorite build. Let me know what you think. Have you tried something like this? I personally love these kinds of builds with soo much variety.
interesting, i havent used the sand gun in years
dont forget that now the time it takes to fire a projectile is tied to melee speed now
I just got terrablade for the first time (I got godlike modifier when I crafted it lmao) and I gotta say, the wave that it sends out is absolutely awesome for people who don't enjoy melee that much.
Thanks to the 1.4.4 update, ive fallen in love with terraria again. And your videos just make me so happy for some reason. I love you all💚
recently went through a master mode melee playthrough and this was by far the best weapon from plantera to zenith
you should try out the max attack speed in vanilla terraria build with the terra blade
I don't know how this would affect balance, but it would be cool if you could throw the terra blade into shimmer and get an "old" version, and then throw the "old" version to get the new one back. This would however disable to ability to uncraft it into it's components.
Off topic, but I like that your name is a play on Sokrates.
Hi
Hello
As a Terraria veteran, I fell its ease of use to be less satisfying, especially against bosses, I can't deny wiping events with the new one is bliss, but against bosses and as someone who's used to aiming, it feels anticlimatic, but as long as we have the influx waver I'm okay saying goodbye to my old friend. Also new Terrablade on Martians to get the influx waver feels poetic. So I'm okay with it, but even in its new form it feels like it needs just a little more kick.
And with a melee speed build for terra blade it shreds for the worthy moon lord with ease. The guy who did the video was shooting like 12 projectiles a second he started the fight with half hp and only took enough damage to bring him to 1/4th total hp
I like 1.4.4 because it added diversity to the terrablade and the weapons that were also changed like true nights edge and Excalibur
i think melee speed might be a new way to go with the terra blade, because it now fires the projectile whenever the sword swings instead of just 7 times no matter the melee speed
3:10 nice
Is it possible to compare how melee speed affects the dps of the old version vs the new?
Haven't messed around with it myself, but, feel the multi-target dps test was a little skewed with how you had the old moving in the crowd, hitting multiple targets with the blade itself each swing, but not the new. idk if that matters, but that's just a thought I had.
Can you please do a video of frostbrand? In my opinion is op sword on early hardmode.
I found the new terrablade is great for the moon events in combination with feral claws and upgrades.
They should ad a craftable ancient terrablade (being the old terrablade) which could be crafted so u can use either one
Melee speed builds with the new terra blade is kinda crazy, might not reforge violent every time
I didn't think it was a nerf in the slightest, in actual play, with builds for attack speed, damage increases and stuff of the like, I just felt I had the power to wipe the screen single or otherwise
at first i was veryy skeptical about this. but after trying it out, im amazed. and you made very good points.
it's very hard to miss with it now, so you can focus more on dodging. this is great.
the weapon feels more fun to use
the nerfs may seem like they are huge, but honestly, i tried using it against the new buffed duke fishron and it was a walk in a park. the fight is very short and with such a massive projectile you don't even have to focus on aiming and the dps was still very high. the big knockback, massive aoe around you and the giant, fast moving, piercing projectile makes this weapon really good.
i'm willing to say i like this one more now.
so they increased the effective melee range + the range of the projectile (and the number of enemies it passes through) for a nerf in dps.
in theory if you played perfect and used both the melee sword + sword projectile aka staying like 3 or 4 blocks away from a mob, you can deal more dps than the new one, but with how eratic mobs can move you, you can't really do it in practice, and this is not even mentioning whether its a boss or not. the new terra blade, the dps is worse yes, but in practice is better, due to the effective melee range being FAR bigger than before, meaning you can get both the melee (energy range) and the projectile hit on target, if not at least the projectile is hitting, unlike before where its just much harder to hit either with a fast moving target.
in general, i enjoy melee much more, it incentivizes you to stay relatively close to enemies for more dps unlike the unforgiving range of swords before
Since it shoots a projectile per swing, attack speed builds give insane dps compared to the old blade, which has a fixed max fire rate. I think this should really be addressed in your video.
I remember trying to use the terrablade to defeat EOL pre rework, it was not very effective
But after the rework…oh boy
Haven't gotten to this point yet in melee master run, but I can say with a lot of confidence that I'm going to like the new version much more.
The ease-of-use more than makes up for the damage decrease for me. Loving the new version of this sword personally :)
Weapon size effects the size of the projectile, keep that in mind
When it comes the wider beam, Terra Blade is actually now a very viable means to kill the *Big Tentacle* with, not to mention how the 'beam per swing' buff makes it have a higher realistic DPS compared to the old version.
I just finished my first melee playthrough since the update and for me, this was absolutely my favourite change they've ever made. I acquired it just after Plantera as usual, and expected to probably not use it much after golem as in the past I have found more success with other weapons at that stage. But I ended up using it for everything, even Moon Lord. It is so freaking good.
Something that you didn't mention, the old Terrablade's projectile did 1.5 times the weapon's damage
They also made it fire a projectile every swing. Maxxing out melee speed makes it insanely overpowered
The newly buffed true excaliber is underrated. I used that sword to beat the plantera, and even I couldn't believe it myself. The high aoe from it + Atk Spd is insane.
That is how I hope I will do my Progression in HM (currently only defeated skeletron prime)
Shadowflame knive, Bananarang and Nights Edge for the mechs. Then true nights edge until I get the true excalibur and then beat Plantera and get the Terrablade
Terrablade is so fun to use. It might deal a little less damage but the shots are so big you don't miss
It may do less damage but the projectile size means it is many times easier to hit at range, so average damage increases.
From my experience, Almost nobody actually used melee's consistently unless it was the yoyo's or thrown weapons that had the melee damage type.
Otherwise they used the melee sets for defense and hybrid'd with a minion, magic, and a gun for some weird combo.
As has been said a lot in the comments the new terra blade is greatly benefited by swing speed and the ale buff "tipsy" is a great addition. Though I'm not sure if it was used in testing and should be used on any melee weapon, the bonuses to melee damage and swing speed have a massive effect specifically to the terra blade basically doubling up as accessory.
I usually use terra blade for crowd control and i use influx waver against pillar cultist and i use solar erruption for moon lord and endgame using terrarian is great again pillar and the moon lord core
I wish they gave the Influx Waver a similar change because that sword feels obsolete in comparison to the Terablade now.
Just beat Duke Fishron today with the new terra blade and flask of ichor!!
The new terra blade is 100% better for console now imo since it’s hard to aim the projectiles on console the wider the attack the better
It's a cool change but completely messed up a ton of other weapons which are now even more redundant
I think projectile swords weren't really a melee thing in the end.
Almost at 60k!
"Dear Melee Class:
Stay in your own lane. You're running us off the road.
- The Rangers' Guild"
now their infringing on the mages side of things! >:(
melee is defo's the favourite child of the devs...
Been farming the old ones army recently, got 6500 dps with the terrablade. I love the rework
Whilst many might be upset about the lower damage, in reality the new Terra Blade can deal more damage per second.
Stats out of the way, I’m glad most of the melee weapons got reworked, the true sword duo and Terra Blade felt like near carbon copies of each other, and now they have some differences and don’t seem like the same bloody blade.
It's probably asking a lot, but I'd love to see some sort of "classic" terrablade, maybe from dropping it in shimer or something, so players who prefer the old version could still use it.
I agree. They should have ancient versions of weapons like the armor sets.
It's easily better than it used to be solely because the projectile fires with every swing, and has no cooldown. I know I don't need to explain how tremendous of a buff that is since everyone else in the comments already has, but just incase: buffing swing speed makes this sword absolutely shred anything in its way
i just finished a melee playthrough and what you said here was on point. The Terrablade a multi target BEAST and is just better for general use or new players because its easier to use then other weapons. also i was testing and with the setup i had pre moon lord the influx waver was doing more single target dps but was harder to aim. so yeah terrablade for multi target and general use influx waver for bosses.
3:09 was easily my favorite part of this video.
They should give the terra blade the ancient hollowed armor treatment and bring back the old one for the people that prefer it you could call it the ancient hero's blade or something like that
but then loads of stupid people would think its better when it isn't
@@KwikBRbrother you can't call someone stupid when they have an opinion in fact you're the stupid one
