- Why is this Terraria weapon so forgotten? The Spectre Staff. In this video, I take a look at this post Plantera magic weapons which is extremely forgotten in the Terraria 1.4.4 update, despite receiving many buffs and nerfs in its lifetime. The question is, why is this weapon the way it is and does it deserve the reputation is has. Today we take a look how its obtainability and performance. Should you get it in your next playthrough? Or stick with the other more popular staffs from the dungeon, like the Shadow Beam staff and the rotten fork? Lets take a look!

This is one of the very few weapons that I literally hadn't used before making this review lol
Never heard of it before this.
lol in my last playthrough i got this thing first drop and used it to beat golem and cultist
I first picked it up when I did a run trying all the homing mage weapons, I can't remember how it stacked up to competitors but seem to remember my conclusion was it'll be a fine weapon in it's role if rng decides this is the one you'll get, a reliable homing weapon is a must for my toolbelt. (Ohh yeah, the projectile speed is indeed a shame, considering it doesn't have a crazy niche to counter it)
You should've used it with spectre armor set it really shines through like that
@@Is_Somebody_Here amateurs
I wish there were more bosses in between golem and lunatic
Most weapons are forgotten because they are too close to endgame
Thank god for expansion mods, I guess.
@@ohyoo1208 I doubt that's going to happen they released the lore back in 2019 no more bosses or content between golem and lunatic the best they can do is buff lunatic and golem and maybe moon lord.
@@mr.nooply9042 i call for the power of retcon
@@mr.nooply9042 Bruh, he was talking about mods. Calamity in particular adds a LOT of post-Planterra and Post-Golem content.
@@HumanoidDerpling Well I did not know that, how ever in the next update I would want the ability to punch/kick and get fist/feet weapons with combos and dashes and special abilities.
When Spectre armors healing effect was first added, this was one of the best things to use with it as the homing effect would guarantee hits, meaning you could somewhat reliably overheal damage
Now razoblade typhpoon is literally it on omega steroids. It feels pretty boring to use any other magic instead of duke book. Except maybe the postml weapons.
@@qwertystrix6649 imo there are many super good weapons that are actually better against bosses than razorblade typhoon. Blizzard staff, razorpine, charged blaster cannon, laser machine gun, stellar tune. The duke fishron book is not everything lol.
It's enough most of time. Especially talking about homing abilities.
@@qwertystrix6649 that is why i compared it to homing weapons only it is obvious blizzard staff/razorpine can deal more dps but you have to aim.
@@paweswierczek6265 one of the main things that makes the typhoon better than those is it’s versatility
Sure razorpine is better close range, blizzard may be better against large surface boss fights, etc etc
But the typhoon is better than all of those outside their expected niche
so why carry around like 7 weapons that are only good in certain scenarios when there’s a weapon with 90% the damage output but way more usability
Honestly I prefer this over the Shadowbeam Staff purely because it homes in on enemies lol, it does feel really slow compared to other magic weapons though
i preffer blastin em with the pitchfork
Yes tho the homing is actually really good and the only boss that avoid it is the duke himself. Aside the staff can quite quickly take out every boss in the game. It might sound stupid at first but as a test veteran i can say this weapon deals slightly more single target dps than... Chain gun all because od spectre armour set bonus but yeah.
What he doesn’t mention is when you pair it with specter armor, each hit with specter armor can either heal you or deal more damage
@@Shloiman19 like all other magic weapons with that armor? wow didnt know that
It sounds more like a weapon youd use when you’re trying to mind your own business, a kind of basic weapon of sorts. Its homing lets you deal with mobs without effort; no aiming nor going over to em. If you’re trying to mine or build, it sounds like a good weapon to just deal with pests in your way. That, is where i see its best use being and i do quite like having something like that. While i was mining my plantera arena too many pests kept pestering me and having a homing weapon with fairly good damage would’ve been so much nicer during it
Coom spectre
no matter where we're breed
we still are made out of seed
this is my kingdom come
this is my kingdom come
Coom Staff
Fax
very coom
*coom*
Do one about the boulder staff, it’s insane against large groups of enemies
It is trash lol. Literary shadowbeam staff is better
@@paweswierczek6265 I respect your opinion, I just find the Shadow beam staff to be kind of clunky, and boulder staff is much easier to get in my opinion
@@floofeeguy1127 it is quite easy to get tho the pierce is not infinite and the dps is just not good in comparison to other weapons. It sucks because the weapon has pretty satisfying sound and generally it is a super fun concept. I would compare it to the golem fist in terms of viability it just exists &looks funky but that is about it.
Why would you do events with golem weapon? just get lunatic event weapons
@@skyren2912 because using pillar weapon every playthrough us boring ???? If you have 3 braincells you can defeat moon lord with leaf blower and get 10 times more satisfaction from doing so.
You don’t even need to go to another world, as the Dungeon Brick Blocks can be crafted into any of the 3 wall types via a Heavy Workbench in a graveyard with Ecto-Mist.
Then, as you said, simply transmute those 3 wall types in the shimmer!
Didn't know you could craft the other ones at a heavy workbench! Very good to know :)
lol thats twice you messed up the background dungeon wall part
Thx bro
This weapons always a staple of my Mage runs, as the name and theme of it suggests, it pairs very well with Spectre Armor. It’s also very good for events like the Pumpkin/Frost moon or even Martian Madness, which then lead into better weapons to use for bosses like the Empress or Duke
It carried me through the zenith seed on master
I remember it carried my first mage run.
What I've found is the magnet sphere and the spectre armour can be an amazing crowd control helps a lot with solar eclipses
magnet sphere and spectre armor was the go-to mage setup that was so strong they had to nerf the helmet a few times, even to the point of reducing your damage.
I feel like a great buff for the weapon would be three consecutive shots follow by a projectile speed increase, which would pretty much be the same as the ragged casters. It could be kinda like the old razorblade typhoon before the nerf.
I remember I liked this weapon when I played my first mage playthrough. I mostly used it because I didn't know there were better options.
every post-golem weapon that isn't meant for moonlord be like:
it makes me think of the rainbow staff that i think is amazing. I especially like it in the underground jungle if you have a minion that can shoot in the general direction of the enemies because then you can just shoot towards the offscreen enemies and the homing makes it so you didnt have to aim. allowing you to focus on doing what you came for
I actually used this as an upgrade to my Rainbow Rod in my Mage playthrough. It was replaced by the Razorblade later on as a new homing projectile weapon, but it was a pretty good weapon for events and such.
-laser machine gun op in 1.4.4 though-
I'd like to hear review on the stellar tune. Even though its tough as nails to get, I think its a good enough mage weapon to compete with the other available mage weapons unlocked at its stage.
I agree. I used from post plantera to post pillars. The only downside i saw it has alright range.
I looked at one of your older community polls and it was "Shadowbeam Staff or Inferno Staff" and I put a comment simply asking "where spectre staff," so this made me so happy when I saw it!
1:18 you can also mine the dungeon bricks themselves, and craft them into the particular wall variant you want at a heavy workbench, and then shimmer that into the cursed variant, no alternate worlds required!
i used it on my first mage playthrough, it was insane, but there are definitely better weapons
if you need crowd control you should try the inferno fork
Spectre Staff with Spectre Armor is just like...
"You're a Ghost with a Hoodie."
Omg thank you for making this sockrteez I am at this exact point in progression in my expert mode 1.4.4 world
When I first got it I though "Oh, they added a new weapon in 1.4"
This weapon needs:
• Heavy increase in both speed and homing capabilities to make it on-par pr closer to Clorophyte bullets.
• New projectile texture.
bro you are a litteral god how can you make daily video like this and at this quality ???
I'd love to see a video about the Nettle Burst. I've found it to be extremely helpful in the dungeon, due to its enemy-/tile-penetration abilities.
i think it would work good if it featured the lifestealing effect from that one spectre armor helmet. this could mean that you can equip both the spectre hood and headgear and get both the extra damage and some healing
One of the best uses of this weapon is actually for healing via the spectre armor. The high damage and homing makes it a very reliable and consistent method to keep your HP topped off when dealing with tougher fights, even with the damage debuff that the spectre hood gives you. Overall I'd say it's a great weapon to have in your back pocket for utility when playing mage.
''high damage''
fucking 200 dps, even sky fracture demolish this weapon if you compare both
what mod are you using for those infinite attack speed segments at the end of videos?
This staff saved me in calamity master mode revengence ngl my second time playing terraria ever was with master mode and calamity revengence and when I got this staff I actually lived for more than 50 seconds during a fight. Pretty nice
I've been using this in my 1.4.4 world and I love it....that with the purple teletubby one works super well with the specter Armour
I remember this one because i used it p much in 1.2 version. I like this staff so much. I even used this staff alot in my expert mage playthrough.
I'm convinced that you will make a video on every weapon.
I found that the staff does pretty well when paired with spectre armor, as the homing + multi-hit spawns a lot of souls, and it’s really nice to use it when you switch to the hood for healing. The homing allows you to get some distance while still hitting the enemy and the high damage let’s you heal quickly. Ofc, there are other weapons that I prefer to use when I am using the mask for dps
i get this almost every single time, i love how it looks and works with the specter armor
I loved this weapon in my mage playthrough, just a very strong homing weapon.
very strong = 150 dps 💀
@@MazdaAntiMilitancia I wouldn't use it as my main weapon, I would just use it for certain scenarios because the homing is very strong. Also spectre armor boosts its dps a lot.
@@MazdaAntiMilitancia bro it deals more damage than chain gun , provided u use spectre armour.
@@maisiesmydog5194 i mean 150 dps on base damage, a lot of weapons on beggining of hardmode have higher than 150 damage without acessories and etc.
@@MazdaAntiMilitancia base damage isn't the oy thing that makes a weapon good.
The Spectre Staff is perfect for fighting Empress of Light immediately after Plantera. The projectiles can have a little bit a trouble keeping up with her but with right setup will do enough damage to defeat her before sunrise (except in Mastermode where she has to much health).
I always use this weapon to fight fishron since i usually skip frost moon and martian event. Getting bubblegun/razor blade typhoon is a massive upgrade which makes me feel pretty good.
i used to main that staff all the time when it first came out , was working amazingly with spectre armor before they did a damage nerf to the healing cowl
congrats on 75k subs!
Love this thing, even if I basically don't use it anymore.
Was a staple in my mage loadout back in the Xbox 360 days, before the frost and pumpkin moon were added :D
It's good especially when paired with the spectres armor. But the projectiles are a bit slow, need to do some circling back to have some of the bosses run into them
Paired with the Spectre armor set, this was THE most used weapo in my group of friends back in 2016 lol
I think not many mages use it because the shadowbeam staff is basically perfect for golem and not that bad against the cultist and then they just go and get the pillar glove
This has always been a go to for me if I dont have the razorblade typhoon
One of the first times I got it I loved the homming feature. The Second run I realized the velocity problem. From usability point of view, I feel it is the best of dungeon staves. It even gets some flavor wins, by using the spectre staff used with spectre armour. But it is so bad against fast moving targets.
If I could change it, I would either make It pass through walls or make it so it gains more velocity in proportion of the time it spends flying unatached.
old sockrteez video intros : *This weapon is so underrated!*
this videos intro : *i forgor💀*
funny thing is this staff was my main pick the first time i played 1.2, can't remember why though, but i pretty much used all of the post plantera dungeon staves tbh
in a lot of my playthroughs i actually always go for that casue i love mage and that with spectre armor with the damage helmet is really strong for that point in the game
I feel that the other post-plantera weapons overshadow this thing. I myself like weapons that are well suited to a specific area, like the Shadow Beam staff.
Another goated sockteez vid
in my first playthrough i used this weapon alot alongside the razorpine, it was really good!
i only remember the weapon beacuse it was a crafting recipe for a REALLY good mage weapon in calamity mod 💀 good video dude
i used this weapon on my first expert mage playthrough, i got it from my second ragged caster so yeah also paired with spectre armor its amazing
I'm going to have to try this weapon Out. Right now I'm messing with the flame thrower and it took me all way through hard mode. Before that I could not beat one mechanical boss. After getting it I just melted them. Really good video, I enjoyed it, Everyone have a great day gaming.
Glad to be helping with 100k :)
This is what I used to beat EoL in my first master mode playthrough
i find this weapon is good when paired with the spectre armour healing hood you can keep a good distance from bosses and enemies when you are low and don't have to worry about missing your shots but the DPS isn't great
This is my favorite weapon when fighting duke fishron, it has homing so I can focus only on dodging but what he doesn’t mention is pairing it with specter armor, each hit either healing you or dealing even more damage makes it my favorite mage weapon before I beat duke
i spent about 6 hours farming this staff, the ragged casters are super rare spawn xD paired with spectre armor though i feel like this is an awesome item :)
How do you fire super fast at the end of the vid?
Not naming it the Specter Scepter was such a missed opportunity
I use this weapon a lot because if you get the right set with mage the crit damage can get near 1k which can shred pretty much anything until you can replace it
I personally never go extra out of my way because I always struggle to find the casters
2:48
"it's the chlorophyte bullets for the mage class"
i can hear RBT laughing in the corner
I tried to grind for this weapon the first time I got to post plantera in a MMFTW playthrough. It was so painfully tedious and my luck was so bad I just went for the razorpine and stuck with that.
I got this weapon trying to get ectoplasm, it was my main weapon up to duke fishron, after wich I swapped it out for the razorblade typhoon. Amazing weapon.
How does he make the projective fire so fast at the end?
I remember accidentally finding this weapon on my mage play through when farming ectoplasm. I didn’t think too much of it but I tried it out with the specter armour set (cuz it’s a *specter* staff) and I shredded duke fishron. It also made pumpkin moon and frost legion and lunar eclipse a breeze (until I replaced it with the razorblade typhoon).
I wonder how this compares to the rainbow rod, they are both very similar but the rainbow rod's faster speed makes me want to use it more
I feel like not many know of Terragrim and for good reason, it replaced Arkhalis sword in the shrine and has a 1 in 50 chance to drop, I legit didn't think it was real after so many attempts to get it in Journey mode.
i actually frequently use this weapon. The projectile speed is always annoying but when it does hit it hits with a decent punch. its fairly decent against the moon events and the martian madness
On my first playthrough, I originally threw it away because it was worse when used by the player than when the enemy uses it (ragged caster's version went through walls). However, I never thought how it would be useful above ground lol
I use to use that in mobile before like somewhere after the removal of ocram it was so rare i remember grinding it for 60 hours just to get it
This weapon pairs phenomenally with the Spector mage armor
It’s actually my weapon of choice for taking out ever screams when farming for the razorpine. Highly suggested, considering the very large amount of single target damage it does, without having to worry about aiming projectiles like the beloved inferno-fork.
I love every homing weapon and this one's no exception. It's just such a pain in the ass to get, the area that those skeletons spawn in always seems to be absolutely miniscule in my dungeons.
i love this weapon, it's better then anything else against duke i feel like, nimbus rod can get rid of his bubbles and you wiht spectre armor swappin helmets back and forth, while spectre staff deals good damage & does the homing job
Pair it with the spectre damage armor... the projectiles pair really well and make the whole experience super satisfying
Finally, vindication for the spectre staff
This with the spectre armor/mask does well against Fishron because even if the projectile can't always hit him the maximum amount of times the extra projectile from the mask makes up for it. I used to farm this to beat Fishron on my mage only playthrough but Razorblade Typhoon is just way better. This weapon gets quickly replaced or never used if you beat Fishron pre mech bosses.
I think the big second issue besides its stats is its lack of spectacle compared to some other magic weapons it just shoots projectiles like the gemstone staves even if its homing it just doesnt feel very good compared to the same tier razorpine wich feels more unique in being a machine for mages, or even abyssal fork or w.e its called wich has higher fire rate and a unique looking projectile
I have definitely not forgotten this weapon, me and my brother were doing a playthrough a while ago and we spent like an hour or two grinding for this thing only for me to immediately use a different weapon. At least I actually enjoy talking to my brother so it wasn't all that bad.
"Terraria: I forgot this weapon existed" 🤣
i remember getting this trying to get the shadowbeam staff and thinking it was the best weopon to ever exist
The Spectre Staff definitely shines with the Spectre Mask
Specter staff is underrated the only problem is frost moon and pump moon over shadowing it so much it’s ok against duke if you loop duke instead of running it’s good for master mode and ftw temporarily mage weapons but things like inferno fork shadow beam staff can easily get you upgrades like the razor pine which with specter armor is insane dps
This weapon is so good with the specter armor i use it a lot in my mage play through
I used to have a terraria figure that had full spectre armour and a specter staff like 7 years ago or something like that
I thought I knew all terraria weapons. I didn't know about this one
I love the spectre staff, its such a fun weapon and it was my choice for my first mage playthrough
The only time I ever use the specter staff is when I mainly rely on the health regen spectre armor. It’s homing projectiles make them easy to hit which means more HP regen.
perhaps for duke fishron you could try going in circle around him rather than just running, that way the projectiles could easily hit him
Pair this with spectre mask armor for extra power
Idea: double the atk speed as a base and make the homing have a smaller turn speed or cone that it homes in with, and make it so after it hits an enemy it changes to about halved speed and gains better homing (so normal specter staff stats)
and or give it a projectile life time before or after it hits an enemy idk about this last one but the rest seems cool as a concept, oh and maybe change piercing properties too? Not sure
I think this new update crossover will add something between plantera-golem stage, or golem to - lunar pillars. This weapon will be useful at some point after the update next year.
They missed a major opportunity to name this weapon the spectre scepter.
it’s in an awkward position where it’s post plantera and dungeon farming but pre golem and lunar events, meaning you’re probably only going to use it against golem, martian madness, and maybe nebula pillar before it gets strictly outclassed by the nebula blaze (an all around mage weapon with homing attacks but much faster projectiles and higher damage). that’s to say nothing of the razor blade typhoon, which is also an all-rounder homing mage weapon with pierce/multi hit abilities, and is outside boss progression.
i used it a lot when i had it in my run, but as soon as i beat fishron and nebula pillar i put it in a box and never took it out again. it doesn’t have any unique qualities to give it staying power.
the specter is like the more responsible brother of the diamond staff
the reason its so forgotten is because originally there was only the inferno fork and shadowbeam staff. the spectre staff was just added in later and paired with its unimpressive visuals its usually just tested for a few second and then put directly in the merchants inventory
After the buffs this became one of my favorite magic weapons due to how good it is for how simple it is to use
You should have a look at the ghastly glaive...it makes the destroyer cry
Dude one time I was farming for ectoplasm and then an enemy dropped the shadowbeam staff and dude it is so good.
With the unlimited speed in the end sequence its propably the coolest looking weapon in the game.
