Good review. I bought this lens as a good, affordable AF 50mm lens that I don't plan on using in manual mode. I have some great old nifty 50s for shooting manual mode. With modern lenses, I prefer to use my camera dial for aperture. Even when I shot with Fuji gear, despite their renowned aperture rings on their lenses, I used camera dials for aperture, so the aperture ring stiffness is not a problem for me. Size doesn't bother me either. If I want a small kit, I have other lense for that. And considering that I got this lens brand new for $175, and with its very good optical performance, there is zero downside to this lens for my use case.

Good observation. Some could argue a FF lens needs to be larger then manual to allow room for the focus motor. However look at the Pentax 1.4 FA full frame auto focus lens it’s smaller. Perhaps it’s less expensive to make a larger element lens that’s acceptable in the middle. Compared to smaller glass that’s completely perfect since it covers the whole sensor area. I agree FF should not have the size of lenses we have been seeing

It is actually making me think of selling my Nikon. I love the camera and with the 28 2.8, it feels great, but I miss the size of say the 50mm 1.8g. I guess there is that macro version 50mm, but it is 2.8 and I haven't used it yet. It is tough. I love the images I am getting out of the z mount stuff, but I almost don't want to use it unless it has the 28 or 40. Maybe that is enough, but it definitely makes you think

@@just_A_Hack how about some smaller voightlander or other brand manual lenses?

@just_A_Hack adapt the Sony Zeiss with the AF adapter.

@@sdhute I would absolutely love that, but that is getting too expensive. I understand that they are super nice, but 700 to 800 dollars plus for a manual focus lens isn't something that can happen for me at this point

Judging from the build and construction at the beginning of the video I was like what a trash lens then you showed the pictures and I immediately saw and felt 3D pop and vintage vibe. Pretty damn nice rendering for sure. When you were thinking of comparisons I actually thought of the old Fuji 35mm F1.4 lens on the older camera bodies. It honestly has a very similar look and feel to the images. I agree the modern 50mm are way to big and sterile. Sony/Zeiss I think actually does the best job with the 55mm. Thank for sharing your thought and the images. Happy spring by the way. Its a good time for photography.

Thanks for the review Eric! Are you able to compare it to the Viltrox 50mm?

Hi Eric, my best guess on why the mirrorless lenses are in general longer than the DSLR lenses is because the mirror box is missing in mirrorless. And then there are differences in the mirrorless nifty fifties due to design approach. Focus breathing, corner sharpness etc. I am currently reviewing the same lens, and I think it is optically great, I agree on the focus switch, it is very easy to knock. Cheers Matt

Hey Matt. Humbled you even found my channel. Optically I love it. Size wise it’s a little big. So far though, it’s lrevent Ed me from buying Nikons 50/1.8 (yes I don’t own it)

Two other modern smallish 50mm lenses worth considering are the Sigma 50mm f2 and Sony 50mm f2.5 or if not full frame the Fuji 35mm f2. None quite as fast as f1.8 though.

There's also the Nikkor Z MC 50mm but it's a 2.8. It does have the added benefit of macro though.

Samyang/Rokinon 45/1.8 is a small and light lens. My copy is sharp wide open, but shows a lot of CA.

First thanks for your review! I was looking for one about this 50.
Next you kinda beat that point about the size for far too long man. 5 mins of the 10 min vid was about that.
Btw I spoke to a Nikon rep and we both discussed the size of this lens and our belief is it’s made to take full advantage of the higher resolution that the z6iii and z7iii will have. We all know thanks to newer sensors lenses are getting bigger to take advantage of the resolution.
Wish you had some more test shots including those at night, but good examples nonetheless the less. Ps. This isn’t a critique just some positive feedback. Cheers 👍🏻. Subbed!

Weird lens, but since 50mm prime isn't something I would use often I might as well get a cheap one.

Very distracting the shallow depth of field when switching between you and the product

That damn AF stuck to my face. Guess I’ll have to shoot at f/16 and ISO 12,800 next time
