I felt everything you said. Nursing has changed so much. I used to love going to work. Then came politics/ computer work and less time for patients. I miss the old nursing when you could care for your patients and go home feeling like you made a difference, instead of wondering if you completed all your charting.

Nurses are discouraged from this type of behavior of human compassion… * I was a nurse for 17 years* but in Todays world a nurse would get written up for “ Inappropriate touching’ and “ showing patient favoritism” instead they are encouraged to give you an anti-anxiety pill like Xanax or Zoloft…… it’s absolutely sick. And I hated it that’s why MOST nurses leave.

@divinemessenger2030 no because nursing has changed so much in the last few years no one becomes a nurse thinking they will get slapped and kicked and yelled at told your useless then your boss also being a bully. You don't get time to care for any patients you get given a minute to do each task with someone standing behind you telling you to hurry up while your patient holds your hand begging you to stay. You can either be a nurse that your boss likes which is someone who no longer cares and just gets the tasks done or you can be a nurse the patient feels they trust and feels cared for the nurse we all wanted to be. And then the amount of useless paperwork you have to do after your shift because no one can get it done in time. It's so defeating I love my patients but I feel so worthless like I cannot do a single thing right I'm ready to end my life I always wanted to be a nurse I used to put my uniform on with absolute pride people would say to me oh you sweet summer child you have no idea and they were right i had too much hope that i could care for people that I could make a difference in someone's life but management has destroyed that doesn't matter where you work it's all the same.

Then this sweet nurse came in - she said after we talked to her - you have pneumonia, Baby Girl. Got my daughter on IV antibiotics, got her oxygen. Watched as my daughter, with a mask over her face, praying her babies stayed in her womb a little longer! They stayed in another week - because that nurse was caring & smart! Our precious twins were born 8 days later, very premature - but they lived!👶👶 BECAUSE A NURSE CARED.

I have the time to sit with patients/families and listen, or educate them, without feeling rushed. I'm actually caring for people, not just doing tasks and charting. The patients aren’t the problem and you should worry about yourself and not the people I have cared for. The profession itself isn’t the problem. It’s the schooling and overall healthcare system that needs change. You can be a good person and care for people while hating the field. It highlights management’s inability to look beyond how it’s going to impact staffing. It’s a shame really. I left the bedside 6 years ago (NICU FOR 17 years) and I don’t regret it one bit. While I miss helping patients and the adrenaline rush of critical care I enjoy not working weekends, holidays or begging for PTO more. You’d literally have to drag me back kicking and screaming. We were constantly staffed 1 RN to 8-9 patients on evening shift. This was on a very busy acute medicine unit. I left every day wondering what mistake I had made. I felt guilty at first, leaving patient care, but it was the best thing I could do for my mental health. I dreaded going to work everyday just like you said.

But, I put so much into it with 2 Master Degrees in Nursing. I retired about 4 years earlier than I wanted due to the loss of both of my sweet parents and burn out I just called it quits. I realized during grieving my parents that I no longer had the energy, or desire to remain in the field. I worked so many places and areas of nursing just as you. I even served in the military as an RN. Pretty much all the areas sucked the very life out of me. I live on a modest retirement and try and plan for a good trip once a year. It's unfortunate that all the empathetic, patient-oriented individuals are being driven away from healthcare, while the heartless, money-driven ones stay. The story of you being ill and not receiving an ounce of compassion from your workplace is so relatable. I've been through an almost identical situation and I remember it cutting like a knife. Like, wow, I'm sitting in the ER because I was in a nearly fatal situation and my supervisor only cares about when I can get back to work. No "how are you doing"... no "take the time you need to heal"... nothing. I think sometimes those of us who are on the more empathetic side expect others to do the same for us. We expect a standard of decency out of those *we* help, and it's disappointing when we receiving less than zero. At the end of the day, if something doesn't serve your mental/physical wellbeing... if you can't figure out a way to salvage your situation... it's totally okay to leave (and maybe even return later on, if you feel the desire). Things often aren't as permanent and devastating as it feels in the moment. Everything will be okay 🤍

Hey Nesha! I get it! My mother was a nurse for 44 years and she saw the transition. I was so happy when she retired because some people were trying to be a little disrespectful. I wondered if it was because she was in charge, but they came across the wrong one. She would correct them in a professional manner, but they didn’t try her again. My aunt worked at the same hospital and decided to become a school nurse until she retired. I hope you find something that brings you peace and joy.

I feel this SO much. I wanted so deeply to love being a bedside nurse, and for a while I did. But most bedside nurses have been physically and verbally assaulted by multiple patients after just a few months in the field. And 12 hour shifts are BRUTAL when you're basically not allowed to sit down, eat, or unwind in any way. Combined with this and slowly learning how little hospital systems care about nurses' mental health, it's not easy to keep feeling that passion. Hospitals need to drastically change their practice in order to stem the mass Exodus of nurses that has already begun. I don't think that will change in my lifetime and I feel no regret over leaving bedside nurse.

Case overload and overwhelming. My friend and I would call each other every morning before we headed out for the day. It was on a Monday I called her and she didn't answer. My thoughts were she's with a patient, she'll call back. She did call back and it was not what I was expecting. She sounded drunk. I was confused?? I asked was she working today, she replied no friend I'm not. That was when she told me, she had a stroke! I was floored and hurt all at the same time. This situation with her, truly had an impact on my mental. I had to step back and really rethink about my own life, mental health and well being and career.

Do something else, anything else. Then when you really begin to miss it, go back to nursing, perhaps in a different area. Life is to short to stay with something your not happy with.❤

I’ve been a nurse over 26 years and you’re 100% right! I became a nurse so I could help others and hopefully making a difference while in my care. I was diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis, so I’ve also been a patient and had the same experience. Some nurses don’t give a damn about their patients, but once they found out I was a nurse their attitude changed as well as the care I received. It shouldn’t take finding out I’m a nurse for them to show care and concern. I work in ECU and had patients come in with BS stories to get drugs and when they don’t get it, they’ll hit you or spit at you! The majority of my patients are amazing and I love(d) what I’m doing. Our manager staffs the unit with 5-6 nurses to care for every patient that comes in making it difficult to render the care the patients deserve. I don’t want to be the nurse who has to “treat and street” a patient because I have 3 or 4 emergencies going on at the same time; a full waiting room and ambulance stretchers lining the hall forcing me to prioritize by condition and not by patient. We as nurses are overworked; under appreciated; stressed out and under paid!

@Meeka so true and it’s a damn shame! I started as a tech in the Ped ICU while in school and loved the nurses, they were amazing and would even help me with my studies and I swore I was going to be like them. When I started as a nurse and to this day, I treat my patients as they are my family. I feel such pride when a patient I took care of months ago in the ER remembers me and the treatment they received under my care. It really disgusts me to see nurses who don’t care or gripe when their patients use their call lights. I’ve had patients family come to me for help because they couldn’t find their nurse and have found myself checking on their patients just to make sure they’re ok. But you have a patient that’s a nurse, doctor or in the public eye come to the ER and these same nurses do a complete 180 in the care they render. Every patient should be treated as a VIP regardless of what they do for a living!

You don't have time to be everything for everybody anymore that is true. I am blessed very much since I still have those moments. Patients and families can be tough. You just have to not let them or anybody run over you. That's not part of the job. So many people in my city know me from my job. I see patients outside of work and they are always so happy to see me. That feels good. Maybe you need to look into other types of nursing. I love it when I am so busy and don't know what will happen next. Just wired that way. But anyone who has lost the feeling of compassion should look for another job. People expecting too much from you is in every walk of life and in every job. God bless you all

As a nurse for 40 years now retired. I did Medical Surgical and home health and hospice. I’ve been hospitalised I think 4 times in the last 4 years. I’ve come thru the ER each time.
It seemed to me the ER nurses had the easiest part of nursing. They seemed to have the most support. Their paperwork load was the least.
Their time with the patients was the most brief. Most patients are stabilised and either discharged to home or the medical floor.
If I had to do it over I would have gone into ER nursing.
I’m sure idk know it all the behind the scenes. Just what it seems in my recent ER stays.
If you are stable you are left by yourself for very long periods of time even with machines beeping and IV’s dry. As a nurse I knew what was going on but if I hadn’t would have been very stressful.
I’m so glad I’m retired. I haven’t been so relaxed since I was a teenager.
I appreciate all you nurses out there immensely !!
