  • Jared Larson was living in a state constant fear from the control of a cult leader. His daily life was consumed with the second coming of Jesus, until he began doubting his beliefs because of a false prophecy. This interview is the first in-depth accounting of the remarkable story of his life, experience in a polygamous Mormon cult, his marriage, his escape, and his current ministry.

I moved to Ephraim, UT 7 miles south of Manti in the early 90’s as a Christian missionary to the Mormons. I can tell you that everything Jared discussed is true because we were building a Christian church at the same time Jim Harmston was building the TLC (The True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Latter Days). We praise the Lord for his faithfulness to draw Jared and his family into a personal relationship with Himself. We know and have witnessed to many of the people Jared grew up with. Please pray for us and for those still trapped in this cult. They are dear people who are just lost sheep in need of the true shepherd Jesus Christ. THANK YOU JARED for this testimony it so encouraged our hearts.

Always have. I remember way back in Junior high, meeting a Mormon student, she didn't even know what her church taught.
There are two great voices in the more political lane who are *such* good men, doing good things, both are Mormon, & I remember seeing this man who had brought Americans home from Afghanistan, and the comment section was ... awful.
You know "You're going to hell! Why are you here?!" No grace. No kindness. I don't think that changes anyone's mind. Prayer does. Thank you so much for the reminder!

@@teri7371They've been very cleverly lied to. I Imagine being born into a Mormon family, growing up that way, seeing good morals, Family Night, etc. The best lies look so much like truth on the surface. If you cannot yet love them, ask God to help you have compassion for them.
I had to start at pitying people I was having trouble praying for. Then I found Wow, it's VERY hard to stay angry at people I'm praying for! So often we have to first be obedient. Then the feelings might come.

Jared and Sean...Wonderful!!! Living in Arizona for 70+ years, I have had many Mormon friends. Before I believed in God, Mormon friends in high school invited me to take their lessons to join their church. In her wisdom, my mom said "OK"-provided the lessons be taught in our own home so she could be a part of them. Again, in her wisdom, she never attacked the young men or their information. She simply asked questions, asking them to further explain Mormon beliefs/practices/history. She didn't prohibit my interest in Mormonism, but she put forward a book for me to read during the summer..."No Man Knows My History."
Sean...your ability to form meaningful, searching questions in a charitable way is one of the reasons I follow you.
Jared...your journey may be seen as a gift from God, offered because of your desire to know Christ more deeply. And with this gift, perhaps God will open doors for your ministry to people in the LDS faith and the cults tied to them.
My own journey to God and Christ was also many years in the making. Time does teach and form us. I will keep you, your wife, and your family on my prayer list.

I think Jared is spot on about how to approach Mormons but ALSO JWs. If you can have common ground about Christ then show them who he is and what he did (full atonement), it will crush the need for their hierarchy (the Governing Body) bc who could be better than Jesus?? Thank you, Valerie. I am grateful for your comment. So much of how Jesus challenges who we are in this world, applies just as much to who we are as Christians, as it did to who I was as a Mormon. So many identities we have in this world instinctively try to take hostage our primary identity in Christ. They seek to consume our worldview. But in knowing Jesus and seeing Jesus and remembering who He really is and what He has done, this brings us into a sense that as Christians, we should never be defined by who we are in this world, but by who we are in Him. This is where our self-worth lies, no matter our circumstance. Praise God!

I heard again and again during my "interest years" that at manti, many families were breaking up. The mind develops a strong "drug" of conviction and fear which allows them to endure the craziness. Such a powerful story from Jered, how God delivered him, his wife and family from this cult. It truly is heartbreaking to hear how devastating being in a cult like that is. It struck me that in his doubts, he couldn’t get away from the reality of experiencing love coming from God and contrasting that with Dawkins and other peoples materials about Atheism and seeing the idea of Gods love was not there. It was really helpful for me hearing his understanding about Jesus, from a Mormon perspective, that they see him in perfection and how to use that idea to reach out to Mormon friends. As a Christian It was really emphasized to me how the Jesus that the Mormons believe in, is not the true Jesus., which is very much is true theologically, but to also understand that God is working in their lives with the understanding that they do have and how using that common point, can help open doors to more conversation instead of dismissing the reality of God working in their lives within their understanding. Great conversation. God bless Jered and his family and bring healing and restoration to all of them.

Amen! God is always testing us his purpose is to prove that our faith is real. Even though I’m struggling I will keep faith, Since covid I fell on a terrible hardship. I lost my job for declining the vaccine. I declined due to my health conditions. I suffer from lupus, and heart disease. I’m now waitressing but not making nearly enough to get by. I’m a single mom, my husband died suddenly years ago. I’m all alone. My children are autistic and non verbal, I’m overwhelmed. I recently started homeschooling them because they were having so many issues in school including bullying. Please pray for me. I’m struggling to pay rent, struggling to buying groceries, struggling to afford the tools I need to homeschool my sons. I WANT TO GIVE UP! But I TRUST in you JESUS. Even as I struggle providing for my children. I will keep faith in God. Faith over fear. Lord hear my prayers. I don’t understand why I’m going through this hardship for so long but I trust you LORD!

We got saved in 1976. (Shortly before thexyears of Jim Jones.) Baptized and filled with the Spirit yet immediately found ourselves in what I still (decades later) call a Christian cult. (Because they used SO much scripture to justify EVERYTHING... especially the "control".) Sure. Differences between this interview's key points, Jim Jones, Mormons and other religions and the entity we were in. But the same spirit of fear, control... making the church leadership God himself. False worship. I see this spirit invading our entire nation in many ways. Making religions and fervor out of too many things to count. The simplicity of Christ and the loving triune godhead can not be replicated. Anything else is idol worship.

Encouraging! Surviving a cult is difficult, painful & obviously humbling. Love how grace-filled Jared is. It is through God’s gifts: grace, mercy, peace, love, long-suffering, joy in knowing & understanding, that keeps families / people together during trials. This was unimaginable; yet, uplifting. Praise be to God for salvation of the Called, the brethren, anointed & appointed church. Amen 🌹

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has NEVER changed the DOCTRINE of Christ that was given to Joseph Smith and all Prophets that followed. People who broke away from the faith are the ones who changed the doctrines and laws to suit their own twisted and perverted ways. Hence the cults. Hence why the church has copped so much flack because of these break away cults.

Wasn't an actor by the name of Elizabeth Taylor over her lifetime married 7 times and divorced 6 times too? So it isn't that hard to understand how anyone might get away with practicing or polygamy or polyandry or just plain gold digging while looking for their first or another step up in marriage again in hopes of being regarded as having near the top in status among the cultists too. In Elizabeth Taylor's case the cult she was participating in for almost her entire life could be called the beauty cult; the oldest cult in the world; The cult which corrupt people pride themselves in being the best in knowing how to profit from by fooling people into believing that they know best how to become beautiful both inside and out. As if none of us at birth including Moses was never made beautiful already by our creator. Elizabeth Taylor's last marriage was to only a humble tradesmen and so we don't know what all kept her in that beauty cult while she had maybe become trapped in it after her first divorce. The principle of lawlessness seems to have no preferences when it comes to which cult it is going to be operating in from day to day. That is why some people tend to drift from one cult to another until the day they die too so called 'religious' or otherwise. A clear sign that someone is participating in a cult is when they false accuse a whole community of civilians as being wicked. That kind of false accusation could sometimes be for example all who work in the entertainment industry in Hollywood. People like that are prone to feel instant intense envy and hatred towards anyone who is being showered with positive regard from people in their audiences when they are in plain looking dress without a charismatic sounding voice in comparison to themselves. That is why being a successful stand up comedienne is a risky business to continue in past around the age of only 21 or so. Nothing is worse on earth of an experience that someone must go through other than when being disrespected as a human being while becoming ravaged with the use of weaponry like for example a rock being thrown at you only because they are a young man or a young woman trying to live up to the dress code where you work. In Israel it is both young women and young men being conscripted into experiencing that sort of thing. The reason they are having to cope with that sort of thing is because of the principle of lawlessness which is underlying the launching of so many rockets being sent into the west that were made to destroy. Anyone who believes that good can be accomplished when getting revenge about what happened in past centuries by launching rockets and by paying young people to do crimes against Israeli young people conscripts is allowing themselves to be led by the principle of lawlessness only. Realizing that you have become trapped into only a cult that is being led by someone who is practicing psychopathy is a close second when it comes to the worst thing a person would have to go through. Because at least we would then be able to maybe find a way to escape long enough to make a report to police if we can still walk. How many of us will continue to keep the ability to walk away from corrupt illegal not following the law leadership while the air quality where we live is growing worse every year?

Then it becomes this: Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Its something you can't really describe, but is undeniably there. And its a life-long journey of discovering the treasures of it.
