    An important piece of the puzzle about “past content” for me is when people still have the videos public and/or monetized. Especially with comedic skits such as trends about racial and gender groups like “white people be like” videos where some were imitating racial stereotypes. While it’s understandable, to a degree, I feel like it for those creators who are still on RUclips today that made that type of content, like Coleen, should have apologized it once they realized that what they did was offensive. Instead of having people make an apology because they were essentially forced to by the public. Especially since if the videos are still up.

      The thing is in the clip where she was thinking of sending the lingerie to the teen she was joking about how potentially messed up it was. How the mom might get upset at the questionable behavior. She laughed about it because it was true, which showed just how aware she really was. She knew to an extent that the relationship was inappropriate but she continued to use and reward the boy for her advantage. She used the power she held in the relationship in very disturbing ways, and pretended that she wasn't aware of it. She's a grown adult, she had to have been at least to some degree.

Ranting about things can be a really good coping mechanism, but maybe she can start ranting as if it was a video and then post it privately or send it to her therapist. I also think that other than the harm to other people, she's starting to hurt herself because very often she says she's happy that other people relate to her and enjoys opening up the conversation. I feel like this situation is a massive power play. Like if someone you idolised said they wanted you to work for them so many people would say yes. This whole situation leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Talking about your divorce to some one who isn’t an adult yet is awful and is most likely going to cause trauma. Therapists exist for a reason! As well by hiring fans and people to run part of the business it takes the responsibility off her. As someone who has done lots of safeguarding training this whole situation rings alarm bells talking to children about adult problems is awful and is going to cause so many issues when they’re older.

    • @gezziejackrin5991
      @gezziejackrin5991 4 года назад +8

      Emma Watson Does anyone actually know what Colleen said about her divorce to him? It’s so easy to jump to conclusion saying “oh, that could be traumatising to such a young boy” when we don’t even know exactly what was said. Hell, we don’t even have any evidence that she did do that and even if she did, context matters a lot.
      Regarding the hiring issue, from what I saw from their setup, there was no way he was going to get the blame for it anyway. Miranda’s account was making those tweets. Unless Colleen publicly says someone was posting the tweet for her without her control, then the blame will be on her. She was responsible for letting someone use her account and because she has to approve them first before he can post them, she will ultimately get he blame for it. She clearly addressed this in her video. I found it sad that even with her good intention of hiring a boy (which let’s admit, she didn’t have to pay him. Everyone would jump at the opportunity to be part of Miranda especially her fans), it turned her into this evil villain in everyone’s eyes.

Her youtube features similar content. And, yes, her character is rooted in making fun of people with disabilities. How is it funny to make fun of vulnerable people? It wasn't funny in the 2000s and its not funny now. Kids see this and think its okay to mock people that have disabilities. Her netflix show definitely led to a couple of kids asking their parents what porn was, from the reviews. When the Miranda Sings character began she was pretty much just an annoying, slightly narcissistic adult - the kind of person you might regularly encounter in a choir or music program. They think they're amazing when they're not. I think Colleen based the character off of her real personal experiences and there was zero implication of intellectual disabilities of any kind. A lot of it was inside jokes for people who are more into music. Since then, the character has become more exaggerated and child-oriented to the point that it is almost unrecognizable.

      @Erica Esther Coping with what? The fact she got an animal killed? Sounds a bit belittling to use a rape victim talking point to justify animal abuse. Also I don't know about anyone else, but it's a bit weird Colleen claims she remembers this when she was three, and yet most children replace their memories and have little long term memory until the age of 7. Like I was involved in a car accident, I have no recollection of that car accident from when I was 3 or 4. Seems a bit suspect someone would remember so vividly lying to their parents to get their dog put down after abusing it.
      Regardless, none of this is actually what the issue is. It's her pattern of laughing at animal abuse and then monetizing it, and now hiding behind a shield of "i neEd ToCoPE wITh my SHITTY bEhAvIouR let me laugh at animal suffering in peace!"

      @Sir, I'm Amy Santiago and I have something to say seriously! That's the most absurd excuse for inappropriate behavior with a minor. Children could ask for anything in the world - that doesn't just mean you do it as a grown woman in her 30's.
      If a man in his 30's sent a 13 year old girl lingerie or underwear, the excuse of "she asked for it" wouldn't fly in the slightest.

      @@faerittarius That's a really disgusting thing to say. If a grown man sent a middle school girl his underwear because sHe BeGgEd FoR iT, he would be cancelled and under investigation before the week was up. Sure, I don't think Colleen is a groomer. I don't think there was ill intent here necessarily. But I think she's beyond immature and doesn't understand what is appropriate for children or not and she absolutely did not think about the repercussions of her actions. But its a clear pattern of behavior. Her content on youtube AND her netflix kids show is full of incest, sex, porn, rape, and molestation jokes, when her target audience is young kids. This has been going on for over a decade with no change
      She didn't PROPERLY hire him as a minor. Don't act like you're some expert in employment law when she admitted to using him for content on a conditional basis without pay. Never mind the fact that she didn't just like, approve, and use his content, she made her OWN content based on it, then threw him under the bus when she got backlash.
      "people are defending her based on bias" YES. There are MOUNTAINS of evidence that she's acting and creating content that is inappropriate for young audiences, and angry little children like you are coming out of the woodwork to make comparisons attempting to defend her disgusting actions, that aren't even logical or based in fact. Of course there's concrete evidence to support the kid, why do you think people are so upset? Jesus christ, you could at least look at the evidence first before being such an asshole about it. You're acting like she's done nothing wrong ever.
      twitter.com/DarkBallet20 has a lot of evidence to support adams claims, as well as evidence of her behavior pattern. There has been NO growth or change, she's just upset she got called out for once.

So people saying hiring her fans is not appropriate, thats wrong, she died cross the line on the personal aspects of it, but since we are only getting parts and pieces of these events from all sides we can't hate on either of them, except for the parents who should have spoken with her and not let things go through their son. the parents should have talked with her and met with her on all things with her. so its not fully Adam, or Colleens fault, but i will say this 16 or 17 year olds can and do lie its part of being a kid, and just cause of his age doesn't mean he can't be in the wrong just as much as Colleen is. its not black or white, there are lines that were lured, and if the moon told her not to talk about him, then her not talking about it till now, was the smart thing and respectful thing she was doing. And its the fans and the you tubers here that pushed her to talk about it and bring light to it, after she was asked to not talk about it. even though her son did and edited and redid his videos, so since nothing shown or used on line is ever pull open people don't know what was real and what was this kid trying to get famous or spin things in his best light to save is own channel.

    Ps: I forgot to mentioned that she actually doesn't seem to see anything wrong with befriending and giving jobs to her underage fans, and that's to me troublesome because fans idolize you, and children tempt to be unpredictable humans due to many psychological and biological reasoning. I am 19. Friendship between adults and minors is extremely possible and okay in *my opinion* if handled properly.
      I was friends with my teacher all through high school. She was the advisor to the club I ran so I was in her room all the time (4/7 hours a day by the end of my senior year). We had conversations as friends. I worked for and with her planning large events as an under the table consultant and employee. I learned intimate details about her personal life (when her ex and her kid's dad was in the hospital and not doing well as well as how the kids were feeling and reacting for example). I helped her pick her dog out. I helped her write an essay to go back to college. I ate dinner at her house and after(!!!!!) graduation she let me sleep in her house as opposed to a tent in the rain despite my insistence that I would be fine in the tent or that I could just drive home.
      I was a minor during the majority of this and I knew the lines between what was said to a student, a friend, an employee, and a coworker.
      The issue in my opinion lies within the fan/idol dynamic if that. The real issue is a parasocial relationship. At his age, people are able to and SHOULD know the difference between dynamics. His parents should have stepped in at any point in this if they felt uncomfortable but they didn't.
      Colleen did wrong in this situation, yes, but I personally do not feel that she knowingly and with intent manipulated and abused this kid. He unfortunately wasn't able to draw the lines in this situation and he got hurt. That does not give him the right to go after her career. This is something that is going to follow him now and he was the one to put himself in that situation. He made the choice to go public and seemingly warp the truth because he was hurt. He put himself in the drama of it all now and I just wish him the best in navigating it.

    • @thebooknight
      @thebooknight 4 года назад +2

      @@oriongood3109 he was 13 I don't believe he had any responsibility in "drawing the lines" that is why it is below age of consent because the law agrees they are vulnerable. Collen however was 30 and absolutely should have known this fan, idolatry relationship with a child gave her all the power and was inappropriate at best. She used him to check on drama about her divorce. What normal 30 year old does that to a "superfan" who had made multiple fan accounts. That's wildly out of line and disturbing. A face to face friendship with a teacher is one thing, an online relationship with a fan based on using them for whatever they want is just wrong.

      @genericname8727 4 года назад +5

      Shyla Good, while I’m glad you were fine, I’m studying teaching and it’s been made extremely clear that that sort of thing is absolutely not okay. Telling students specifics about stressful things you’re dealing with can place unnecessary stress on them, and you should NEVER have viewed your relationship with the teacher a friendship (being friendly with students is fine; being friends is inappropriate). Things like having you help pick out the dog, telling you personal stories, letting you view her as a friend, and inviting you to her house all cross professional boundaries and could be considered grooming behaviours. Many students in your position might not have felt comfortable saying no to the request to help with the essay or to work for her or even just to listen to her personal struggles; all of these can put unnecessary pressure on students, who should be building connections with their actual peers and focussing on their own studies rather than their teacher’s studies. Your teacher probably could’ve been fired for those behaviours. You’re usually not even allowed to accept a student’s friend request on Facebook unless maybe they graduated from school years ago, yet alone invite someone to sleep over at your house. Maybe that teacher didn’t try anything with you, but others would’ve. There’s a reason schools require teachers to maintain professional boundaries with students.

      Actually, a lot of places that do internships or service jobs from where I live do that very thing. There's a trial run for restaurant workers for example, wherein the first couple of weeks they get their hourly pay but not tips. People tend to come and go pretty quickly in those positions. Also, it may be because he was so young and it was rather informal that Colleen instated the trial period not only for her sake but for his. Some kids might think they want to do the work and then realise they don't pretty quickly so it provided a low-risk for both parties. Again, these are just other perspectives, I'm not saying at all that that's what happened but I don't think it's as simple as you're portraying it.

    I don't know what her intentions were when she sent him the underwear and over shared about her personal life. What I will say is that if she were a 30 something year old man sending a 13 year old girl underwear the narrative would be vastly different. If she were a 30 something year old man over sharing about his personal life to a 13 year old girl, I highly doubt Colleen would be getting the same benefit of the doubt when it came to intention.
    My point in saying this is that there has to be the same energy when it comes to any adult regardless of gender who manipulates a child. The fact that she felt bold enough to quantify her apology by adding he asked for the underwear tells me that she knows because he's a boy people for the most part are more willing to give her a pass. Because you have some people who think a boy cannot be traumatized in the same way as a girl. This type of ideology is not just woefully misinformed, it's dangerous. It's one of the main reasons boys/men don't come forward when they have been manipulated in this way. And that causes damage. I mean look at the hate this kid is getting for coming forward with this. How adults, including James Charles who has millions of followers have come for this kid.

Colleen is trying her best to make her fan community a place where dreams come true. @@alicelee7502 I don't think what colleen did by sending him the underwear was sexual assault. I'm a victim of sexual assault myself and I believe her on the reason she sent them, there were no bad intentions, they were only worn over clothes, as far as we know at least. I think it was still extremely inappropriate considering his age and the item itself, but I think calling it sexual assault may be a little bit of a stretch. I do want to make it clear real quick though, that I was sexually assaulted by a girl, I myself am a girl and so I don't think that being a girl exempts you from being the one to sexually assault another individual. I think Colleen saw it as a joke and didn't really think too much about it. I think she is being sincere, esspecially now that she has her own child and can now understand better why it was wrong. That being said you cannot blame not knowing better (as an adult, even a younger adult in their early 20s) because you should have. Own your shit. Own the fact that you chose to not seek out new information and diversity. Own the fact that you chose not to learn to do better. Hey it's Me no one ever can really know right from wrong! It depends on their perspective in the moment right then and there and the impulse decisions that you make in the moment. Sometimes people, no matter what the age, get caught up during the heat of the moment and decide to make impulsive decisions. If people over the age of 18 were somehow able to know right from wrong, then why does prison even exist, why do we allow friends, and family members to make mistakes in which we forgive them for. Just because you’re older than 18 doesn’t mean you always make the right decisions in life. If this was the case, then any time any adult made a mistake, it would be inexcusable! The important thing is that you move forward from your mistakes to better yourself and become the best version of yourself.

    I could go on and on about the things she missed in her apology but I LOVE how you brought up her interactions and relationships with young fans. In her apology she mentions how she loves messaging her fans and interacting with them and how she sees all of her fans as friends, BIG NO NO. Personally I believe that influencers should not be messaging fans who are under the age of 18 and should only interact with them at meet and greets and shows. This is because even though a child may think they know the influencer through videos, they really don't and in fact the influencer is basically a stranger to this child.
    I think that parasocial relationships have become more frequent because influencers act like they are friends with their fans and children (in some cases adult) truly believe that they are friends with this influencer and that to me is a problem. Another problem I saw from this entire situation is seeing her young fans interacting with strangers on twitter to defend her, you can see through their comments how young and naive they are and it honestly scares me that there are that many children who are younger than 14 on twitter just freely cursing out and talking to complete grown adult strangers.That isn't colleens or any influencers fault as she can't control those kids having accounts but by interacting with these children she is condoning their behavior and themselves being on twitter. All of this just has hurt my heart and while I don't think colleen is a threat to society or anyone, I just feel like she hasn't handled any of this well.
    P.S: I was also writing a paper on human trafficking and how common it is on social media with young children so I just have the mind set that young kids on social media isn't safe.

They seem to have tried navigating this fairly well for something that's a new territory for us as a society. I've never gotten the appeal of "Miranda sings" she says it's based upon people who try too hard but don't have the talent to back it up. Then why isn't Miranda perfectly gorgeous, with unwaivering confidence but instead Miranda dresses oddly, talks with an odd accent and has a hard time reading the room. Miranda always came across, to me, as maybe a mentally challenged person or some who who would be lower on the autistim spectrum. (I don't mean this in a offending way) the character came across as making fun of someone who mentally had trouble with things. No matter what colleen was an adult talking to a minor, who she knew was a big fan, it was wrong. Someone already said it but if she was a man, she would have been condemned for her actions.

      She obviously feels bad about what she did. She sincerely apologized in her video and if you know her you would know how much good she does

      I love how her apology is apparently enough, but if the genders were swapped there would be no coming back from this. You can do good and do harm. This relationship was inappropriate- period.

    I saw a Jojo Siwa tik tok with Colleen saying she’s her bestfriend. That kinda weirds me out. she’s over 30 years old, I understand that her fan base and Jojo’s are kids but She has such a strange relationship with minors... It gives me the creeps

      Ok but he was 14, he was old enough to be on RUclips. Colleen shouldn't have done what she did but people 13+ will continue to use social media because they are teens, we just need more laws to protect them and for grown ass celebrities to stop befriending them

      @Erica Joy It's really not surprising, given that her brother had (has?) a family channel that grew in part from her Miranda Sings fame/that she promoted and appeared in.

    When I first heard about this situation I immediately thought that she was grooming him. If it was a man who did some of these things with girl, people would be calling for his head. As a parent, it raised red flags all over the place. Even with her explanation, as someone who is around her same age it rubs me the wrong way.

    One of my daughters highschool friends friended me on Snapchat and I was so confused. I blocked him so quick. And another one of her friends use to comment on my pictures on Instagram. It wouldn't be anything inappropriate, but I would never respond. Because we're NOT friends. It's weird as hell.

    I always found i incredibly strange that Colleen shouted so much about being 'friends' with Jojo siwa... Jojo is literally a child. It's a strange pattern to be 'friends' with children as an adult

    honestly.. it makes me wonder what other youtubers back in the day were being inappropriate with their fans because I was never rlly into miranda sings/Colleen, but I was an occasional watcher. What's also surprising is that I didn't even know this whole situation had come to light since 2020. It's crazy how Colleen was able to get away with this for so long, and extremely disappointing that so many big RUclipsrs were defending her 3 years ago.. from my perspective Adam was definitely silenced.

    Are people actually still hating Colleen after her apology?! Her apology was one of the most sincere and genuine apology I have ever watched. She addressed everything, she didn’t blame anyone but herself, she explained everything, and she didn’t even put ads on her apology. She was very mature and genuine
