I was trying to force myself to make a beat a day in addition to my main visual art job and that didn't work. Now do 1 a week and love it.

Love you man, you spit essential advice. The beginning is also my favorite part. Middle is ok. The last 10% is a grueling, sometimes life sapping process. Wish I could hire someone to take all my almost finished songs and fucking finish them.

There is a difference between being an artist and being a professional and it really takes some soul searching to figure out which one you wanna be. It can be hard to be both.

I've been creating music since I was 9 years old (1997). But didn't really get my own gear until I was 20 years old (2007). I think it's best for beginners to make as much music as they can at first, so they can learn their gear and WHAT NOT TO DO. Then when you get some years under your belt it will be ok to make less music, but still finish music you find to be your favorite creations. By then you'll be able to sit down and make something thats great with it taking less time getting in the zone mentally; whether you work alone or not. I too am down to about one song per week. I wish I could find more talented vocal artists who can say the same lol.
But I've worked on numerous projects throughout the years and have no issue with going into overdrive and doing a whole album for someone in a month. And that includes post-production, arranging/editing and mixing.
It's not the quantity, it's the quality.

I agree that forcing it never works. Sitting down with the intention to make something without really having the inspiration just leads to being disappointed with the results. But sometimes I just get that feeling, usually once a week or so, and that's when I make the good stuff.

Don't forget about octatrack parts! That way you can get super confused about which patterns have which parts/tracks and screw up all your tracks at the same time while trying to sort everything out just like me!

I would say if you want to be pro. Dedicating at least an hour is more than enough. And having a portable music device whenever you have an idea will get you there within 10 years if you want to become a master. Treat it like a martial art or a sport. But of course take some time off and let your brain reset, that can help with the creativity. I feel whenever we are fixated on something too much, it ruins the creativity. Also, setting up your space for success is important, making your studio welcoming and fun is essential. I feel hardware is a big part of that inspiration part.
