  • A summer intern at Teach For America Baltimore, Elijah Miles delivered this inspiring speech to a group of incoming teachers at institute. Wise well beyond his years, we think Elijah's words are a great reminder about why we do the work that we do.
Elijah will begin college at Morgan State in the fall.

    Clap, clap, clap...!
As you see, wisdom doesn't come with age. It come when you ask why?, and why, and why? again.
When you're not trying to be right, but to underestand what's your paradigm, your perception of things. Only then you can underestand other paradigms and perceptions.
But most of all, love for mankind.
    Thanks man!

Amen, brother!! I have this debate with people I know and love all the time. Those who have something to give, and those who have something to offer, cannot abandon the neighborhoods they grew up in; turn around and cast hatred and disdain at said neighborhoods; and then do nothing about creating the change they require of others who are still in those neighborhoods. If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem. That simple truth is NEVER going to change...

I believe your future is extremely bright. You touched on some very poignant issues that have been plaguing our inner cities communities for over 50 years. The people that live in the neighborhoods we are trying to reach are not living to their greatest potential. For whatever reason they have for not pushing into their greatness is an excuse to play victim. I live in an area in which the people are depressed, down trodden and their perception of life is fast money and getting high. This is not my opinion it is a fact that is more prevalent than those that get up for work everyday just to pay bills, with no other dreams in sight because their perception of life has been tainted.
I believe your speech was extremely empowering and your love for your community will allow you to continue to see the best your city has to offer. Continue to build a team of people that see the greater in their community, continue to believe God and know that His plan for your life is greater than your circumstances.God is opening doors right now that are going to enable you to pour into your community more than ever before.#Faith -Be blessed

Listened to an interview with Dawkins about 'The Selfish Gene' which gave an interesting twist to this video. Why do we (or nature) encourage young people to flee or rise from their current environment? I'll definitely come back to this when I'm feeling in a more nurture state of mind and hopefully draw different conclusions.

You're confused. You totally missed my point. The role of the teacher is secondary as too is that of the parent but to a lesser extent. The natural, political and social environment dictates the outcome of anyone's life. What most often don't become aware of is their own ability to choose their own path based on what is truly right for them. Modern society has become a distraction sales survival club more than an opportunity for personal growth. I hope that's clear enough for both of us.

I could understand what your saying if they were reaching one person at a time...but they arent.

Everybody needs to be role models, regardless of what they do and until everybody realises this, you're flogging a stubborn mule. And even then, what is a role model? A pacifist martyr who speaks in vain for charlatan communities, claiming to be victims of the society that they have together built to suit their own greed and indifference to consequence? It is a waste of time to think that those who continue to wallow in their own sympathy by their own choices can be helped?
