Project Amazing Grace
Hedgehogs are in serious decline in the UK; with a 95% population drop since the 1960s and over 30% since the year 2000. Having cared for hedgehogs for over 30 years we have noticed the massive decline first hand. By working with one village at time, we are able to reconnect large areas of land and ensure a more sustainable future for the humble hog.
What are we doing?
We are saving Britain’s hedgehogs one village at time. We are doing this in three ways and we need help.
Awareness & Education
Community Engagement:
‘Hedgeducation Brochure’: We have a 52 page ‘Hedgeducation' colour brochure with articles from Steve Backshall, Brian May and Professor Noel Fitzpatrick. This can be adapted to be downloaded or posted. (enclosed).
Television: The decline and needs of the humble hog were detailed in three, one hour documentaries that were shown on Channel 5, beginning in 2018 and continuing in 2019. All were filmed at our Rescue Centre. Please see the links below:

Saving Britain’s Hedgehogs
Creating Sustainable Habitats
Through working with developers and local councils we have introduced a program that looks after hedgehogs at every stage of the development. Our unique partnership with Persimmon Homes has seen the largest UK home builder, making communities for not only humans, but also wildlife.
Our Five Point Charter focuses on the most important areas that are affecting hedgehog numbers and we ask homeowners, gardeners, offices and land owners, to look at these ‘key’ areas on their own land and get things right for wildlife by using our charter.
Access & Egress: Get Grace in your space! It all starts here: Can she get in?
Slugs & Bugs: Bump up the invertebrate count in your space
Nesting & Resting: Create some awesome lodgings for Grace
Drink or Drown: Water is essential for Grace but is it safe?
Do or Die: Make your space Grace safe and remove the killers

Grace’s Survey Army
We hold survey induction evenings. Volunteers receive full training and kits to survey. They are given grid references, then we apply for access to the area and arrange the dates. We have trained over 50 surveyors, to cover the 290 sites we currently survey on. Our surveyors range from 8 to 85 years old and from all walks of the community.
