    I love patchwork sleeves. They're like a museum of someone's interests on their skin.

    Being quiet while getting tattooed is just finde. Some people can handle the pain better without talking and no artist would (or should) force you to talk. Maybe they'll start a smalltalk conversation to see whether you want to chat or not. If not: No problem. They'll probably just focus on their work, maybe turn on music or a film, if they have the possibility to do so, and be quiet.

      Alice L Yeah. I'm very shy myself so talking to my artist would be pretty awkward and hard for me. I'd prefer to just sit there and listen to music or something. Good thing that when I got my first tattoo, my artist had some other tattoo artists there (observing his work) so he'd talk to them and I got to just sit there without having to worry about talking. ^^''

      I got my first tattoo today on my ribs today, it didn't take too long but I didn't talk too much to my artist. Felt like to be able to stay still and ignore the pain I just focused on my breathing, listening to music and reading some of the stuff on the walls.

    I would like to respond to the question of a skin disease and tattoos, I know I wasn't asked but I have psoriasis and tattoos.
    There is a chance during the healing process that you will have a flare on the spot of the tattoo, in my case it cleared when the tattoo healed. ONLY use products that you know won't break your skin out more. I have also gotten tattoos and never had any psoriasis show up on them durning the healing, but years down the road have gotten spots on them. They will not effect the tattoo if you just leave them alone, don't pick at the skin, and make sure to apply creams and lotions to keep it hydrated. Never ever tattoo over effected skin, let the skin heal before getting the tattoo, and make sure to eat healthy months before the tattoo, and after to avoid flaring. I have some tattoos now, with psoriasis on them, and honestly it doesn't look bad, it is what it is. If you want tattoos with skin issue, then take the steps you know your body needs before and after to lessen the chance of your skin reacting.
    oh and also HUGE side note, if you are using topical steroids to treat your condition, DO NOT apply them to your tattoo, it thins the skin, and can leave scarring. I've never done this, but know a few people who have.

    • @amarinssytema6365
      @amarinssytema6365 7 лет назад

      Stephanie Ann Could not agree more with you! I have psoriasis too and it has not affected my tattoos so far. I do always tell the artist on forehand that I've got psoriasis and that I will be using my own cream for aftercare because of that. Most important is not to use hormone creams on your tattoos ever. Just keep them moisterised very well, so far arnica cream and shea butter do the trick for me.

    That last question reminded me of one I got from a friend not long ago: he came to me for advice on how much he should pay for a full sleeve, because the studio was telling him to just "name a price, and they'd make a sleeve worth that price", despite my friend telling them he'd never gotten tattooed before and didn't even know how much a tattoo would cost (especially abroad, as my friend wanted to travel to get specifically tattooed by these guys.) They ended up being total assholes to him and putting him off getting tattooed altogether. :/

    • @Katrinberndt
      @Katrinberndt  7 лет назад +70

      Uhmmmmm they should do the best tattoo they can possibly do to all their customers?? They shouldn't adjust the quality based on how much the customer is willing to pay. What a fucking shit studio. Hope he goes to a better studio and gets what he wants.

      When a tattooer tells you "paid me [with] whatever you want" is cuz' he wants to fuck with you (in the most of cases) #lol you should never take this as answer.

    My advice for being a quiet person is just to say at the beginning "hey, I'm a quiet person, so don't feel bad if I'm not chatting with you". Anyone who judges you is just a jerk.

    My dad got his tattoos touched up but he got them when he was in the army. He got them in the early 70s and got them touched up in the early 2000s. So, I totally agree that if the artist is quality, a touch up will be a very far down the road.

    • @Katrinberndt
      @Katrinberndt  7 лет назад +7

      Exactly! :D You never HAAVE to get them touched up, especially if you have your entire body covered. But if you want to, I'd say 20 to 30-ish years down the road ^^

There's an artist in North Carolina I really like but I was worried about what people would say about me spending so much money traveling (I live in the midwest in US and North Carolina is on the East Coast) to get a tattoo from an artist I really like, but your answer helped me feel better about doing it. to whoever asked about the fern tattoo on the back: I'm also not a shapes/body form specialist but you know how wearing clothes with vertical stripes makes you look slimmer? I would assume that a longline vertical tattoo would actually go quite nicely with broad shoulders by elongating the rest of the back :) I too have broad shoulders and would definitely photoshop a sketch on my back to see how it would look like haha

    The answer to a lot of questions people have about tattoos is simply: talk to you artist. I was like that at one point too, but it's surprising how many people don't understand that a tattoo artist lives and breathes tattoos and it is their job to be an expert about everything tattoos: placement, color, size, how should they fit together, etc.
    Trust your artist!

    • @Katrinberndt
      @Katrinberndt  7 лет назад +4

      Exactly. That's what I try to say in all my videos as well. TALK TO YOUR ARTIST. But I still like to answer the questions I can just to calm people down. I just assume people know that I'm just giving my personal advice, one friend to another. I ain't no pro.

    Adding to the red skin question:
    I have rosacea on my upper arms. I have red skin with bumps that are calcium deposits. I got them tattooed, and they are doing fine. The shaving process removed the bumps prior to tattooing.
    From my research the tattoos will just fade faster than my other ones. This means I may need touch ups more frequent.
    I hope this helps someone.

    i travel two hours one way to go to oslo, to get tattooed, which of course isn't a very long way compared to people who travel abroad, but it's worth it. i tried some tattoo shops in my town before going to oslo, to save train money, and i'm very unhappy with them, so i think going to someone who isn't close by if they're the right artist, is definitely worth it.

    Love these videos as they're super useful for people. Being unsure on which artists to go to, just speaking to the artist instead of presuming that they won't want to do something in a particular colour palette is better. My sleeve that is in progress/ being reworked is being done by an artist who's preference is normally b&w but has really loved doing colour on me. Just ask!

    The thing with the artist saying "pay what you feel right" happened to me on my latest tattoo. It was very weird, cause in almost 20 tattoos I have no one has ever asked me that! It was really awkward and in the end I ended up saying that I didn't feel comfortable to estimate a value and urged him to say one to me!

    Regarding talking to the artist, when I got my first tattoo, my husband and I were so busy chatting with the artist that I forgot I was even getting tattooed. To the extent that I'm not really sure I was sitting very well for him :/ so in that case, I guess there could be too much chattiness!

    I have a question for the next one you do or if you could answer it here in the comments that would be really awesome.
    2 summers ago my best friends birthday was coming up, we decided to get tattoos. Unfortunately I was only 17 and she was just turning 17. Our parents were not people you could convince to let you go get tattoos. This is also around the time stick and poke tattoos became very popular. One of our friends, who had at least two stick and poke tattoos but also a few other professionally done tattoos, knew how to do stick and poke tattoos. She was very clean about it and made sure to show us that she was using different needles for us that were medical grade and never used before. She also sterilized them on top of that. Now, 2 years later, my friend who I got it done with and I are no longer as close as we were. I don't like the tattoo, how it looks, or the reason behind it. It's a sun and moon, sun for me and moon for her. I've wanted to get a different tattoo done over it. I went to a tattoo artist to see what his thoughts on the original design were and he said, "well, it's only outlines and the lines aren't very dark, so it should be easy to cover up. Do you have a design in mind?" This is where I run into a problem... I have no idea what I want to cover it up. I've spent the whole two years trying to come up with something, something with meaning for a while and then just looking for something I like that doesn't have a whole lot of meaning. I really can't decide. Do you have any advice on how to choose something or what I should do? For now I've asked a friend to come up with a timeless design for me... meaning something like a mandala, something I won't wish I could see but something I will know I have and always love.
    Also as a second question, I was only in a tattoo studio once (when I got the tattoo artist to look at my tattoo and give me some advice and see what he could do with it.) and I have anxiety when speaking to new people and people who I have respect for (for example, police or someone who I consider higher up than me) I get very nervous, stumble on words, and get Very Sweaty!! (Ew) lol, I know I should be like this but I really can't help it. Do you have any advice? I want to be able to talk to my artist and not be so nervous but I don't know how to help it.
    I smoke weed for recreational reasons but I don't want to walk into the studio high and have to do that every time or something..

    I read something recently about how tipping your tattoo artist is "offensive" and "rude" and I was wondering y'all's thoughts on it. How much should you tip or should you even tip at all? I don't know how tattoo artist income works so I'm rather lost.

    Im getting a tattoo in July from the best artist in my city; only problem is that he is so busy that I only got to meet with him once for 30 minutes, and it didn't go so well. He basically said that I needed more references for him to understand what I wanted to get (which is totally understandable, I assumed I could just explain it to him, but i guess not). Basically I was told to send him emails of different reference photos and elements that I would like to incorporate into my tattoo and he would use them to create a design for me. So my tattoo is pretty much being created and conversed about over email rather than talking in person. So stressful/weird to me haha

      I did something similar last summer - I was going to Scotland for vacation and had a pretty specific idea of a tattoo I wanted to get to commemorate the trip. I found an artist that likes to do tattoos in the style I like, looked into reviews of the shop (Yelp and FB were helpful, as well as tattoo forums), looked through his portfolio to be sure his work appealed to me, then emailed back and forth about my ideas, and I sent a couple reference images. I was not able to do a consult or anything because the artist is in the UK and I am in the States. So I didn't see the actual sketch until the day of the appointment - we worked out the minor details while I was there. It has turned out to be my absolute favorite tattoo. But like Katrin, I express myself best in writing, so that probably helped!

    first: you look great! second: i have a problem deciding if i want colour tattoos or just black/white.... im scared colours will fade fast.... or that a little of both will look weird... i really don't know what to decide 😣

      17 out of 20 of mine are colour and i think colour and black all fade at the same pace. i think because black is darker it seems to stay dark for longer where this isnt the case. unless you expose them to direct sunlight then colour can fade quicker but not an obvious amount

    I'm very prone to becoming light headed with needles etc. I've got two tattoos and both times the tattooists have cracked it at me. I understand it's coming out of their time so it would be frustrating, but I also think it's a part of their job to understand this may happen. I was just wanting another persons opinion? Thanks!

    So I'm new to the whole tattoo thing, haven't gotten my first one yet, but I also don't have the money to get one at the moment. I'm an artist going to college as an art major, and I think part of my issue is needing to see the tattoo before it is put on my body. Being an art major, I would also find it difficult to give someone else the reigns to put art on my body. Yet, at the same time, I can give respect to artists that are amazing at their tattoos. I love Katrin's chest piece, and the style of that artist, but if I got a tattoo from an artist with a similar style, I'd still want to see it before getting it on my body.
    I want to create a design on paper before getting it done, but I know not all tattoo artists work in that fashion. I also expect that part of the beauty of tattoos are their spontaneousness; the beauty comes from actually doing the tattoo, not the planning. Is it a pain to ask them to make a quick sketch on what it might turn out like before getting it done?

      Carrie Kerins they should always draw it out and get your opinion on it before putting it on your skin (actually it's often drawn and transferred onto your skin as a stencil); if they don't, RUN lol
      I suggest watching some people's tattoo vlogs; the blue ink that they put on beforehand is drawn out and then tranferred onto where the tattoo will be.

      okay thanks! It's weird to me that no one says anything about that part of the tattoo process.

    I have a tattoo on my left thigh that is roughly a little bigger than my entire hand,fingers included. I have another tattoo planned for my right thigh. The problem I have is the symmetry. I feel if I get the right one tattooed the same size as the left,it won't do it justice because I feel like it needs to be a big piece. But at the same time I don't want to walk around with two tattoos that are the same theme and don't look even. I feel so conflicted about this situation. Help?

    • @Katrinberndt
      @Katrinberndt  7 лет назад +3

      I'd either go the same size or significantly bigger, so that it doesn't look like you kinda tried to make them the same size but failed haha. :)

    I have tattoos but there all kitchen table ones and not professional and was wandering how to go about asking if a tip is included in the price or if its out, is it rude to ask an artist if the tip is not included or not

    • @Katrinberndt
      @Katrinberndt  7 лет назад

      We don't tip in Sweden but honestly I don't think it's rude to ask? It would be more rude to just assume one or the other I guess ^^ Only way to find out is to ask :D

    Hey Katrin (who another viewer who wants to answer). I'm kind of a bigger person and I reeeeally want tattoos on my arms, but I'm afraid that it will look bad since my arms are kind of large and fat. I'm also wondering if I got tattoos now, if I ever slimmed down, would they look weird? Thanks in advance
