Its not often Craig turns his hand to a craft project, but today we have the first of two bottle cutting videos... In this video, we use a cheap £20 ($25) bottle cutter to get some amazing results!
We start with a very new bottle - its thin glass should be easy... we move on to progressively older and thicker bottles until we get to a 6mm - is this too much for our budget bottle cutter! Nope! Its so satisfying to see these damaged bottles take on new life - one bottle was so badly damaged that we thought it could not be saved - we love the idea of Wabi Sabi, the beauty in the broken and partial, and today is a great example of that... taking the broken, making it even more partial to reveal its new found beauty!
We show you how to grind and polish the sharp edges to a smooth finish so that these cuts can be used in various ways!
In Video #2, Craig is going to cut a Codd bottle - WOW its around 1cm thick! So we turn, once again, to the Dremel and a diamond cutting disk - we've jumped ahead and cut a few of these last week so that we can make them available in our ETSY shop - please do pop by to support the channel!! Thank you so much!
We hope you enjoyed today's video...

You made your debut Craig, great guide and the knack! Nicole have you handed the pop bottle job to him >>? Good video....!
Nessie likes Y M C A.....hat !
Thank you so much!! It was good fun and a thankfully sunny day for it!
Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
Glad to see the process you turn the dumpies into glass treasure. 👍
Thanks so much ! Oh we had so much fun cutting the bottles :)
Good job!
Thanks ever so much 😃
* Thanks for showing us the Hot/Cold water method of cracking the glass. ~ I had always tapped it with the back of the Cutter. (Not one set in place like yours.) Fun to Watch..
Thanks so much Leslye! The bottle cutter came with a separate little cutter like you say, but we used the hot and cold method. There are other methods , like burning a string on the bottle but we didn't like that option very much ;)
Thank you for doing this video!
Thank you so much for watching, so glad you enjoyed it! Best wishes, Craig & Nicole xo
My favorite is the top of the one glass it just looks so special.
They have a nice shape, I agree! We have a few ideas for these, but I need to cut a few more bottles first! :D
Thank you so much, best wishes, Craig & Nicole xo
Great video, might have to try this. Thanks for posting 😊
Oh! Its good fun and its really surprising to find out how this wee cutter can cut such thick glass - I honestly thought that would fail! lol Go for it - wish you lost of success! Best wishes, Craig & Nicole xo
Brilliant tutorial for bottle cutting it’s inspired me to buy a cutter and make my own mini plant containers
Thanks so much Julie 😃 Glad you enjoyed it!
Just a suggestion use water sand paper to get it smooth and not the rotor
Its good advice! Generally I'd only use the rotary tool larger sharp edges. But it comes with a risk of chipping the bottle... I use the wet dry paper here, to finish and polish the edges.
Thank you so much, best wishes, Craig & Nicole xo
Very informative, thank you.
That's very kind, thank you so much, best wishes, Craig & Nicole xo
Well done and demo. They all came out beautiful. 👏👏🙋♀️
Thanks so much Angella :)
They look lovely especially the bottle top so pretty x
Very nice 👍
Thanks so much Susan :)
I agree Craig you really shined in this video. So calm and peaceful teaching technique. It really made me feel more confident in attempting the same on some of my bottles. Thanks so much.
Thanks ever so much! Craig used to be a lecturer at uni , so he is really good at teaching and research :) Give it a go - it was a lot of fun cutting the bottles - start with modern ones to get a feel for it!
Very instructive Craig. Thank you. Sue and Ian, Australia
Thanks so much Ian and Sue :) So glad you enjoyed the video!
Wow Craig that's amazing I love this well done thank you 💗 xx
Thanks so much Elaine
Great Video and great job. The cut down‘s look realy pretty. Well done👍
Thanks so much Gabriele :) It was so much fun cutting the bottles !
Great video Craig 👍well explained and what excellent results, look forward to your next video 😀🇦🇺🪃 xxx
Thanks so much Siona 😃
Well done Craig, that’s opened up a lot of nice pieces of cut glass ware. Take care and thank you for sharing 👍👏❤️🌈
Thanks so much Chris! We really enjoyed cutting those bottles :)
@@scottishmudlarking must admit I had to turn the sound off when you were actually scoring the bottles as it was like umm nails down a chalk board but very interesting to watch plus I learned a few things, so thank you 👍👍❤️❤️
That looks like it could become an addiction lol. I want to try that too! Love the bottle neck with candle, it would be great outside in wind. I have seen wind bells made from wine bottles and always wondered how they cut them😊 now I see how they took off the bottoms.
Thanks so much Kari Anne 😃 it’s been a lot of fun cutting bottles ( I say that when I held the camera and Craig did the work …) 😳
Well done Craig! Those cut bottles make such nice votive holders! Bravo. Cheers from PA
Very kind, thank you so much! They are very pretty used that way - they shed a lovely light! Best wishes from Scotland, Craig & Nicole xo
Well done tutorial video Graig! You made me want to cut bottles. Thanks and have weekend to you and Nicole!
Thanks so much! Give it a try - it's a lot of fun... don't start with your best bottles, use some everyday modern ones for starters... Have a great weekend!
Well done Craig. Looking forward to the other technic
Thank you so much!! I'll edit the footage for vid #2 very soon!
Best wishes, Craig & Nicole xo
I really enjoyed seeing the bottle cutting process, very impressive results, they looked great in the display at the end.
Thanks so much Catherine! It was so much fun cutting the bottles :)
Great video! You did your research, Craig, had all of the right tools and techniques, and a lot of patience. What beautiful rewards! The cut bottles are so lovely! Take care, both of you! 🙏❤️
Thanks ever so much Ruth! It’s been a lot of fun learning this and we love the results ❤️
Neat. I didn't realize how easy it is to cut a top off, assuming you have the bottle cutting jig. I bet it took you a while to sand down the edges, though! But what a great way to salvage a broken bottle.I am amazed at how thick the old ones are compared to modern.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! I thought it would take more time to get the knack of it - I have done a little stained glass work in the past, but nothing quite like this! Yes!! The diamond grinder just takes the very rough edges down, then the sanding! Depends on the bottle, but can be over an hour! We agree though - the results are worth it, especially when we have a great embossed design on a cracked bottle! It is amazing to see how thin the new bottles are - the thickest yet is the Codd - its around 1cm, sometimes more!
Thank you for watching! :D Best wishes, Craig & Nicole xo
The cutting tool is slick and watching the process was very cool, thanks. I didn't know it was such a time-consuming. The cut-downs turned out lovely. :-)
Thanks so much! I’ll just say that a Codd bottle is ten times as thick as a modern bottle 😳 ! It’s been a lot of fun cutting them and baking them usable though ❤️
Thanks soo much. Thought I had failed but I was dipping the bottles and not pouring over multiple times. Thanks!!!
Thanks so much! Glad the video helped :)
Beautiful creations!! Good job!❤
Thank you :)
Very good video - thanks Craig. You guys are really coming into your own 🙂👍
Thanks so much Gary! So glad you enjoyed the video as much as we did cutting the bottles :)
Well done Craig! The vases, candle holders and fairy light look fantastic! Plus they are so special with their history. Always exciting a new craft/hobby and they can sell on-line, unless Nicole wants to keep them all. Lol Thank you for showing us this craft. Xxx
Its like you've known Nicole all her life! LOL We're trying to be good and not keep everything!
Thank you so much, it was good fun and, as you say, a great way of holding onto and repurposing some wonderful old things! :D Very best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
Wow! Great job Craig! 😎
I couldn’t do it. The cutting of the bottle was like fingernails on a chalkboard ! They turned out so well! Mr. Crafter, what’s next on the list!
Loved the music too! Take care Craig & Nicole. 🦋
Aww thanks ever so much Sissi ! I really enjoyed the bottle cutting - that said, Craig did the work and I held the camera in anticipation ... that also taught me how heavy the camera on the gimbal is.... Take care x
@@scottishmudlarking 🦋 Next jewelry😱
Thankyou for this video. Watching you work relaxes me and i can see you fired up with this new craft. How long did it take you to finally get the smooth finish that you want? I was just thinking if you can do that with a dremel or does a dremel only work on clay? Cant wait to see your next video. Cheers! Tammy🌻
Thanks so much Tammy! Each bottle takes around 15 mins to smoothen - we have tried with a dremel, but it can take little chunks out of the edge....
Great job Craig !! Is Nicole going to feature your handy work on her site or will you get your own!! Great work, amazing patience!!
Thanks so much Colleen ! The bottles are in our Scottish Mudlarking Etsy shop - but we did just open a new shop for pottery printed mugs and t shirts 😃

Thank you for the lesson! I love how genuinely happy you are with your success! ❤ from 🇺🇸
Thank you so much Tracy! It was indeed such an uplifting moment when the bottles broke exactly where we had hoped they would :)
I used to have one of those Nessy ceramic ornaments. It came filled with Whisky.
So was this! It's an heirloom from Craig's dad :)
Thanks for a great instructional video, much appreciated. May I compliment you on your pleasant, calm presentation - you have a great voice! 🇨🇦
Thanks so much ! Craig used to be a university lecturer :) Glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful!
I have spent many hours diving the St. Lawrence River in Ontario between Cornwall and Brockville and have retrieved many old bottles dating from the 1850’s to the 1950’s. Most of these bottles are made of thick glass compared to today’s average wine bottle. Few in my collection are without flaws. I am thinking that once I acquire a bit of skill, I might dare to make vases or beakers from the ones with heavy chipping around the top. With practice and a slow, steady hand, I might be able to give these old treasures a new life. Would be neat! 🇨🇦
Never seen that done before. Good vid. New sub
That's great! Thank you so much for subbing! :D We were not sure how far we could get with the thicker bottles, so it was a real surprise! :D
Very best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
I love your channel- so entertaining and informative- and you are both so great
That is so kind of you to say Viridian :)
That is the coolest bottle-cutting rig I've seen. I just may have to get one sometime... but I couldn't bring myself to cut old bottles. Great job - and I love you two with your funny banter and laughs! :) x
Thanks so much Marcia! It was so much fun cutting the bottles - we mainly use bottles that are otherwise broken :) x
I love old bottles so much but downsized last year and sold a lot of my collection at our yard sale... but I'm glad you use mostly broken antique bottles. Keep up the good work and best to you and your sweet Nicole :)
use a welding stick heated to apply heat straight to the cut made. dont let a runaway heat mess up
You could do but our video shows the cheap and cheerful way without special tools :)
I have a guy that cuts mine. Cut the bottom off and make a wind chime out of them. They sound pretty good
Ohh if only we had ‘a guy’ we have so many Codds 😳
I need to find one of those cutters. How about an old codd bottle?
EBay has them and they are not expensive
Thanks so much Lisa, I have put the link to the one we bought in the description 😃
Thanks Julie 😃 I put the links to ours and the other bits and bobs in the description …
Cool
Thank you so much, lad you liked it! Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
New sub ! Liked 👍😀❤️🙏
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it! Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo
Dude for thicker older bottles go around 10 times with the diamond cutter and then instead of pouring hot and cold water.....SUBMERGE the bottle right side up into "ice" cold water and the hot water up to the cutting line and you will have a perfect cut every time. Now you owe me a bottle 😊
Cool, thank you!
I always get verticle cracks ,not very long but they are there
It's not the easiest but certainly a method you don't need very many tools - you could use an electric tile cutter saw with water!
👏😊
Thank you :)
@scottishmudlarking How to cut squared medicine bottles and the like?
Great question!! We have to try with our utility bottles , but maybe with a diamond wheel!
How would you cut a square or oval bottle?
That’s a great question and one to explore maybe in a follow up video 😊 thank you !
Link to the other bottles you spoke off. Or title of the video so I can view it. I just got the Camdios bottle cutter 2023/12/20.
We have only made this one bottle cutting video so far...
How much does the tool cost?
I think it was around £20 - there is a link in the description :)
Too complicated
You're the first to say so... What would be your less complicated method?
Many thanks! :D
