Digital Devil Saga : The Forgotten Megami Tensei
Digital Devil Saga, for the Sony PlayStation 2 is the black sheep of Altus's Shin Megami Tensei franchise of games. Released after Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne, it didn’t meet the same critical acclaim. And was a substantial loss for Atlus back in 2004/2005.
However, the game has become a cult classic that has slowly been gaining traction. It has left a legacy as being on the of the top 20 RPGS of the last decade by Kurt Kalata from 1UP.com and its metacrtic score hovering at 80%. Users took issue with the grinding mechanics of the game, but overall found the game addicting to play.

I tried to watch the “movies”, but somewhere around making the first ally, I realized there’s only one way to experience this story: Play the Game.
I played these games back when they first came out, still my favorite SMT games.
People honestly really need to talk more about DDS. It's my favorite megaten spin off. It's a crime that it doesn't get the love it deserves
I finished DDS2 today, and I think these games may just be my favourite game ever.
Yeah love these games, wish we got more, especially love the skill system, combat, and characters.
these games are among the best MT games out there, considering theyre western releases on the ps2, im really surprised that theyre not discussed more
There is one detail of Demi-Fiend that makes him very fitting for DDS, that being his name. In Japanese it is Hitoshura, Hito referencing human and Shura referencing Asura. The demon forms of the characters are Asuras.
These were actually my first SMT games that helped me get into main series. They need a collection HD remaster
Honestly seeing Bat getting vaporised is one of the most satisfying moments in the entire SMT.

can't believe i only just found this video, but thank you so much for posting it. im so starved for content about these games. DDS2 is actually the only megaten to ever make me cry. there's just nothing else quite like these ones

its crimes how this dosnt have like 500k views. Happy to see someone digging deeper into the forgotten cousin of P3 and SMT3, especally because at times DDS feels like the PS2 Megaten that has aged the best
I am forever cursed by the algorithm. It's actually one of the reasons I had to take a mental health break because making videos takes alot of time, and it feels like you don't really get anywhere. But I do like talking about this series because of it's depth so I make them anyway. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

I’ve been waiting for someone to make THIS video for 4-5 years now (every year or so I check if someone does, and you actually did an outstanding job!) Its a shame this game is underrated and kinda forgotten. If this were to launch today, people would be nuts with the deep theme and interesting “religious” approach. Anyway, thanks so much for the quality of this video, This is like the 3rd time I’ve seen it in 2 days. Keep the good work! Hope to find more gems like this in your channel!

glad someone did a video like this on these digital monsters games. been looking around for videos on it since playing it on my ps2 back in the day, and needing some reference material for media on artificial characters. weird seeing the smt games coming back out but on the switch with ps3 strength hardware.

After playing through SMT 5 and watching this video, I'm craving another playthrough of these games. There's just something about the combat and story that make me keep coming back to it, despite how clunky some of the mechanics can be.
Nice to see some videos of this game, such an underrated gem.

That is a day one buy for me as well but who knows if Atlus will ever do that or even just ports to modern systems.
I love how you mention that the Maribel Base is so brown and boring.
And it really is. I tried playing these games several times, but always stopped at some point during the Maribel Base. I was convinced the entire game was just going to be boring brown/grey bases.
I finally forced myself through it, and I couldn't have been more wrong. Yes, the Maribel Base is boring, but every other dungeon after that is unique and cool and different and I absolutely love all of it.
Great video man! Good job, just one thing about the Devouring mechanic, I bet you noticed demons becoming frightened, that indicates that the hunt skills will deal extra damage and make it easier to gain Atma Points.

Hell nah, I personally will never forget DDS, it got me into SMT to begin with, I got it as a gift somehow when I was too young to play it, and when every other game I got was either licenced games or popular or semi popular stuff bought on the supermarket, I legit don't know who even got me this game or how, but it legit made a huge impact as a teen. I'd do things for a remaster, that's for sure ahah
Great video! I know I'm 2 years late, but so many questions left unanswered in the games are answered in the novels: Quantum Devil Saga! As great as the novels are, they are incredibly inaccessible due to 3/5 of them being untranslated and getting your hands on physical copies will cost you an arm and a leg. It basically tells the same story, but with many minor details changed/explained. And it's super gay for some reason.
Amazing game. DDS was my first entry to the SMT franchise. The Demi-fiend fight was legendary. The series deserve a remaster.
I still haven't beaten Demi-fiend.
You did this game justice and thank you I never finished the second one and wanted to know wtf. And I loved the shit out of that series. Nocturne turned me on to it and now smt v has got me researching lore. And I saw this. Kudos.
I love both DDS games, enjoyed Nocturne and both Raidou games, wish they would port SMT V to PS4(and other systems).
I like that it is a Megami Tensei game, not an SMT.
This game is really masterpiece. The story i though not will be that good until i play DDS2 and i made up my mind this game obviusly M A S T E R P I E C E.
Not to mention the theme and the Gameplay, well the high counter is suck but the theme battle forgive the high counter

1:24:41 Sera's body gets under a lot of stress when communing with God, to the point it forces rapid aging (think of Guts and Berserk armor, dude is like 25 at most and looks like he has 40 years). The fluid probably is the only thing keeping her from aging too fast, or maybe dulls the pain of feeling God's presence in your brain.
I actually like the English version of Sera’s song better. Sera in English sounds more like a young woman trapped in the body of a young girl. In Japanese, she sounds like a young girl trapped in the body of a young woman. Idk exactly why I prefer the English voice, even though the Japanese voice may fit better.
Really appreciate this, and you are correct nobody talks about this game.

Downloading the atlus PS2 collection minus a few games I can get on other platforms as we speak this got me excited for thousands of hours of more RPGs to be playing

One of the aspect I love about DDS is the use of hindu mythology combine Matrix esque is some of the most fresh idea I've seen
If I can afford Raidou! It goes for $170-$250 online. And I read there's issues with PCSX2 running it with weird shadows and game crashes, but I can probably figure it out. I don't know how long the game is but I 100% want to check it out.
I have Devil Summoner 2 and the blu-ray, but I think I need to check out the first game/anime for context. I do want to do anime reviews for a while because these games can be grindy, and I'm doing another run of P5, making saves at key points.

Atlus is missing out not porting these games over. they are the best blend of SMT and Persona. The fanbase they have now from both smt5 and p5 would probably really enjoy this. I'm about to play these games when my finals are over
Yeah, Atlus should do HD remasters or at least a port to all systems....but this is Atlus so who knows.

Well looks like we are getting nothing for SMT 30th. I would love HD remasters of both DDS games(as one set) for PS4/5, Switch, PC, etc.

I played through this game twice so I could do both.

(If this was more of a comedic tease I apologize, I'm just surprised you'd call them algorithm-chasers when SBB made a guide for introducing more people to DDS over 2 years ago XD)
Not forgotten. Just people really starting to get into their games now. I remember when these games came out and not many people took interest.
Hopefully more and more people will find these games and get Atlus to finally give them some love.

Vanguards represent Afghans... yeah, dunno if posting what the tribes seem to represent on youtube is a bright idea...
You're free to post whatever ideals you want. I mentioned how I wish we saw more of their culture. It's got hints of a new Vegas vibe with each tribe being their own culture. I'm not sure if the books go over them in detail. I didn't see the vanguard as afghans per se, but I'm more interested in what the solids were based on.

As much as I like these games I don't like the attacks at judeo Christianity it's not the faith it's the men who ruined it over the years to make it to their advantage and the ones who mocks God. I believe in an expansive information on all sorts of topics but I just had to say that.
A lot of Japanese games explore judeo Christian mythology because up until WWII Japan had no exposure to these ideas. It's still fresh to them
I don't see any attack on anything, I see free minded and artistic exploration of religious symbology, which I think is a overall good thing. Keep an open mind, it's not a big deal
I'd recommend people play these games only after playing every other Megami Tensei game on PS2 & 3DS. DDS is good...but not THAT good.
Disagree, it was the first game I played (and many other people), and it got me hooked. It's agreed by many to be one of the best games to start with, I'd recommend DDS before Nocturne
