There is something so special about this game. I loved just flying around, talking to people, and exploring. The music is my fave of the series. It just absolutely brings you to another place

Superior to FF7 imo which released around the same period in the UK for me. I didn't play it until years later and can only imagine an alternative reality where Sega succeeded and this series got the recognition it deserved.

How you described these games as looking at this world through a keyhole is so spot on. It’s why I’m continually fascinated by Panzer Dragoon, and why even tho I never want these games forgotten, I don’t want more games.
I don’t want the blank edges of the map filled in. I don’t want its mysteries ruined by our common sense and need to make everything “canon.” I don’t want this world to lose its ethereal dreamlike essence.
What I DO want is to one day play this beast. It’s eluded me for nearly thirty years! I have the soundtrack for it and everything. It’s weird having a sense of nostalgia for something you never experienced 😮

Couldn't agree more. The Mister Sega Saturn core is getting pretty good these days I think? That's probably the best, most accurate way to play this game other than spending a fortune on eBay? Thanks for watching.

wow, couldn't agree more! after beating this game i felt like it's a bit short [especially for a jrpg], but then thought like this 'downside' is actually an upside. it creates a feeling of witnessing a fleeting dream, just out of grasp.

While not as accurate, another way to play this is with the Mednafen emulator, using the Mednaffe frontend to make this manageable.

The analogy of watching through the keyhole as a mere observer is very apt. SEGA or what is left of its spirit still lives on these games.
Some times, games can be art rather than some throwaway product.

Honestly this game was a once in a generation gaming experience. It is my most prized possession owning it from brand new for only £20 from a friend in school in May 1998 who didn't want it.

Despite the game being 5 years older than I am and only relatively recently having discovered the series, it quickly became my possibly all-time favourite.
Along with the OST having found a permanent spot in the calm music playlist I often listen to, both as background sound and for dedicated listens.
Currently I am re-playing it for my 5th or 6th time, finding more details and things to appreciate in every re-play still.
Initially I played it on PC, but I have found that my Steam Deck manages to run the game without any lag in the Mednaffe Flatpak, despite my PC being faster.
Additionally, the more muted colours and smaller size of this screen, with a good DAC backing the headphone jack make for a for me perfect experience of playing it.
This as when not stretched out over a full PC monitor, which also over-saturates the colours, I find that I notice more of the details.
In the future I hope to take a crack at making a game in a similar vein as a hobby project.
Time will tell whether this gets anywhere, it will be a slow-moving long-term thing if it ever materialises.
But it seems possible, if extremely ambitious, like the original game I suppose.

Not sure about "a lot" but it'd definitely sell better on DC as Saturn was already dead and gone by the time of Saga release. Not to mention it would've looked much better on a new console, graphics and everything

Awesome video, i love this game. Rip the whole CD worth of Craymen lore, adored this guy honestly. Its less that hes got sympathetic motives and more that he never treats Edge in a typical jrpg villain fashion, he simply sees a young man. His attempts to explain his goals and make Edge understand the stakes are really fascinating and make him much more human. Same with his relationship to Azel, a typical villain would simply see her as nothing but a tool but Craymen, despite understanding that she is a tool and accepting it, still treats her more as a human, gives her food, water and clothes despite her not needing them. Azels story of accepting his death by bonding with an orphaned girl just tugs on my heart strings. The emotions of this game are so deep but subtle and understated, and i tend to describe its story and themes as "star wars if it had a brain, or dune if it had a heart" (no offence to either of these)

I'm privileged to own a copy of this. Haven't played it in many years; my Saturn console gave up the ghost. I'd still never sell it. It was the first story driven game I ever played and I was transfixed by it. To this day I enjoy a story driven game above any other genre, although these days I get my kicks from Mass Effect, Destiny, and more recently Cyberpunk.

Can't believe Sega still didn't reissue this gem. I know they apparently lost the source code but even a simple upscaling would've been good. Just look at the MGS 1 reissue on PS5, it's the same exact game and graphics, not even remastered and it still sells well. I'm sure there are enough people who keep hearing how Panzer Saga is one of the most expensive games and willing to try it but just can't. I don't get what takes Sega so long. I understand why games like Gran Turismo 1,2,3, etc. will never see a reissue cause of the license issues but Saga doesn't even have such problems with it. Hell, they could just run it through Saturn emulator which have been perfectly emulating this for a long time already

    • @retromuel
      @retromuel  10 месяцев назад +1

Yeah it's mystifying really. It surely wouldn't be an expensive project to put a "Panzer Dragoon Trilogy Remastered" together, they're fairly niche titles sure but the audience is definitely there. I mean there's a whole "Saturn Tribute" series out at the moment featuring far more obscure games than these. Sega seems to be allergic to money at times.

This video's captured from a real Saturn - I happen to have an original copy of the game but if you don't you could use a Fenrir ODE or similar. I haven't used a Mister myself but I think a Saturn core is developing quite nicely. Saturn emulation's really mature these days too - SSF does a great job apparently.
Sega really should have reissued the game themselves in some form by now but they haven't for whatever reason. Thanks for watching.

Check out ssf if you haven't. Mednafen is also an option but I had difficulties with the disc changing, as it didn't show the save data from the previous discs. Just be careful with safe states or don't use them at all as they tended to crash my emulator and you can save very often in Saga.

@@KaloyanKasabov mednafen is weird asf in this regard, but u need to create a text file with an .m3u extension that lists all ISO files in order, then run that 'playlist' file instead of isos, then use hotkeys to switch CDs. it's annoying but not hard to setup ultimately. then it will recognize save files across different discs.
