- It’s a vegan challenge! In this installment of Mystery Menu, we give Sohla and Ham one surprise ingredient and one hour to turn it into dinner and a dessert - with one caveat: It has to be vegan. Today’s secret ingredient is … mushrooms! What will they come up with? What kind of dessert can you make out of mushrooms? Have they seen “The Last of Us”? Watch to find out.

About NYT Cooking:
All the food that’s fit to eat (yes, it’s an official New York Times production). - Хобби
As a happily married dude who's previously run a business with his wife, I've got to say, the collaborative work dynamic of this couple is bananas🤯
It's like they share a brain. 😂
Right???
they are both briliant on their own already but together theyre just scary
I hate to call anyone couple goals but they make me miss having insane creative chemistry working with other artists in school. I would love to have a dynamic like this with a romantic partner 🥺
Lol. They ruined their business and made their restaurant go broke. Narcissism isn't goals.
This is, hands-down, my favorite ongoing NYT cooking series. It's creative, super wholesome, and just damn entertaining without being over-the-top.
Not everyone can cook with their spouse… it’s a matter of skill and personality most of the time. But I love it, and the El-Wayllys really work so well together that it’s a joy to see. It’s like watching people read one another’s minds 😍
Sorry your partner is unable to do such simple task in life.
@@auraballoon Are you ok?
@@auraballoon ??
Is nobody going to point out Sohla's sketches? They're quite quality for something done quickly. I love.
Yes!!!
With the way that Sohla and Ham plan, you can tell that they are truly “subject matter experts” not only in how they cook but also in sourcing what they cook, to the last detail. Like when they asked for black vs. white truffles and such specificity when it came to the button mushrooms. Amazing. A second observation, which is consistent across all of their challenges, is that they cook for the entire crew to eat. It’s not one plate just for filming but something all will try after. Such an awesome duo! Can’t wait for more from them.
There is nothing that they are doing that would be considered "amazing." Nothing...
@@bruisersdilemma354 Absurd. I'll give you three, and there are more.
1. Cooking while being sufficiently entertaining and likable to make us want to watch. I don't think you realize how hard it is to be compelling on camera unless you've tried it yourself. Don't be believe me? Record yourself cooking and put online. Feel free to do as much editing and as many takes as you'd like.
2. Knowledge and adaptability in a team environment. They envision, collaborate, execute, and adjust on the fly at an extremely high level, all while keeping it calm. Again, try doing this with someone you're close to and film it. I think you'll develop a new respect for the excellence on display.
3. Educating the viewer while pulling off all of the above. Sure, there are plenty of people (although fewer than you might think) that could cook a high quality meal with the ingredients on hand, but how many of them display such incredible generosity with their knowledge WHILE also pulling off the task?
Note, I'm not even highlighting their cooking skill or understanding of technique, both of which are top tier.
But hell, if you can do all the above or know people who can PLEASE get it filmed. We need more content of this quality out there.
Sohla and Ham are ridiculously talented. They’re also both a really cute & sweet couple.
I remember when she was on the bon appetit channel (I don’t watch it annymore), the other professional chefs/bakers had to go to Sohla for help many many times, like she was crazy overqualified for that job.
hope you have a good day
@@slowdeath3856take all my upvotes ❤
I want to tread carefully here, but I do believe this episode best demonstrates their exceptional talent to embrace experimentation as a tool for tackling both creative and technical challenges. I'm always captivated by their effortless capacity to overcome "obstacles" and emerge even more formidable as a duo. Without a doubt, here we've two great masters of their art.
Who are you imagining is coming for this uniformly positive youtube comment?
What about this needs to be tread about carefully?
Agree! Also do Sohla and Ham fully understand and appreciate what they just did? I am in awe. They made an AMAZING vegan meal which very few chefs/cooks/people have a clue how to do. And they did it in an hour!
Tread carefully around… the vegans? Haha
Your writing bores me...I imagine it took you 10 drafts to come up with all that dribble...
PLEASE do more vegan challenges! There isn't enough vegan content with PROFESSIONAL chefs. This was incredible to watch!
Yes. Thats the only reason I clicked on this video. :) We need more mainstream vegan content.
Me too! I haven't watched any of the other vids but this one @@pearlzanida8134
Gluten free, too.
I love it when Sohla and Ham get a win, they create enough positive conflict without throwing 'challenge' at this fantastic duo of color. I always want more of them!
Why highlight peoples skin tone here?
@@Nazioarteko89 Perhaps because when she worked at Bon Appetit, Sohla was one of the cooks that was heavily affected by racism in that work environment and was paid unfairly. The format of those Bon Appetit videos were certainly popular, but they were generally quite stressful and negative for the cooks involved, and particularly when those cooks were not paid on the basis of their skin color. So it's nice now to see that Sohla is being recognized and given positive projects to work on, as she clearly is an absolutely brilliant cook.
I feel like whoever wrote the season 1 finale of the bear when Carmy and Sydney were framing out the restaurant is a fan of Sohla and Ham 🤗
I finally had the time to watch this just the way I want to... on my TV instead of my phone, with wine and cheese. This show is hands down better than anything on the food network. Sohla and Ham just get better and better together, and so does the filming and editing. ❤LOVE. IT!!❤
That Bob's Red Mill egg replacer is the best! I use it any time I'm baking for vegan friends. I'm gluten free as well and it still works great 😁
Thank you for a vegan episode. Everything looked fantastic.
Been having a tough week and this instantly cheered me up. Always love seeing new stuff from Sohla and Ham!
Hope next one treats ya better!
So glad this cheered you up! Hope it’s the start of a good weekend and an awesome week ahead for you.
The good thing about Friday's is that the week is over - wishing you a better week 😊
You guys are so sweet! Thank you! Hope you're having a great weekend! 💚😊
Full disclosure, I watch anything and everything involving these two; however, I particularly loved this episode as I happen to be vegan and LOVE all mushrooms. This was super fun and informative.
Awesome episode!
I like that we saw much more of the part where they design the whole meal. It is so nice to kinda get inside their brains and understand how those awsome ideas come.
Mystery menu is always a high point of the day.
Please never stop this series
As a private chef I really appreciate the communication level! It is so fricken amazing. I love the way that you make menus playing off of each other. Meanwhile my boyfriend can’t even boil water lol.
...is he willing to take beginning lessons from you? I'm grateful we taught our kids to cook at a young age as they take turns with us to cook dinner during the week.
@@kcanded every night that I cook I ask him to get into the kitchen with me. He always refuses and everyone tells him how lucky he is to have my cooking lol
@@NickBrunet ...refuse to cook dinner? only cook dinner for one? It seems petty but so does he...
@@kcanded 😂😂😂
24:03 they were so close to saying “morel” of the story 😂
i wish that they had had access to candy caps, even dried ones! they're a super aromatic mushroom that's used more commonly in sweets. in general, it would've been cool to see what sohla and ham could do with some more obscure edible mushrooms.
i'm really enjoying this episode -- this all looks so delicious and i don't even like eating mushrooms (just learning about them, especially their culinary uses).
Came here to say this!
I love Sohla's drawings of the menu - I'd get them framed because they're so cute!
I am in no way a vegan, but I'd eat this in a heartbeat.
Me too. Good food is good food.
This is great! Would love to see more vegan challenges and content here.
Finishing each other's thoughts was really cute in the beginning! I admire how they approached their dissatisfaction with the salad and worked through its re-imagining so well together :D
"No ice cream is better than bad ice cream" couldn't agree more!!!
I really enjoy watching Ham and Sohla cook together. They are kind and considerate towards each other and that is great to see. Also, they did a great job with this ingredient.
I love this show! Anything that Sola is in is great. The way she talks about food is magical. I like her history cooking series too
Need more content with these two
I so wanted that last bit where they say "moral of the story" to be a mushroom pun - "morel of the story" 😂
That mushroom roast reveal gave me Chef’s Table vibes and my god it looks amazing.
i love watching them cook anything but as a vegan im SO excited about this !! ready to learn 🤓
Their ability to plan and co-create together and work through things is just the best
Starting the holiday weekend with a video of Sohla and Ham! 🎉 Best way to start! Been a fan since BA days!
Why not provide at least one recipe from each of these episodes? And I'd buy a dish towel printed with Sohla's sketches.
Shout out to the editors. The music this episode is fire.
I haven't watched the vid yet but think I could die of excitement. I've been binge watching everything Sohla and Ham which has been getting me through a v dark period and I was just *waiting* for a vegan episode!!!
Yay! Hope you get past that dark period, vegan fren. :)
SO many amazing vegan ice creams out there these days, you wouldn't even know it was vegan. Seriously.
Plus a number of traditionally vegan frozen desserts (sorbet, granita, ...)
Love when you bring these guys back. So much creativity and collaboration.
Dreams do come true. I’ve been wanting a vegan episode❤❤❤
Music in these sorts of things usually annoys me, but this was on point. Really adds to the video.
I love the charisma and creativity that you both have. Watching your show helps me to step out of the ordinary and try something new. Thank you.
I both LOVE and appreciate how Sohla was trying to shoehorn nootch into the menu! 😆
these two are literally my fave thing on youtube!! i rewatch their videos all the time and this one especially is so fun and cute.
Edit: wow! That ‘roast’ looks super delicious, as does the crisp mushroom nut apple salad. And your sweet pudding (sigh …). I can sorta imagine tasting it all. (Though I’d rather taste it in all real life). Gonna make my not as perfect version of your salad now . Thanks!
Yay! There you go, love you both - finishing each others thoughts 😹. This’ll be great! I love mushroom dishes (I make a sauté mushroom and apple (with red pepper flakes) thing which I have in my fridge as a side or omelette filler, or in a grilled cheese. It’s delicious, along with a seasoned chopped sautéed spinach dish which serves likewise. Love your mushroom drawings Sohla! (Look for Hermès mushroom scarf, especially the original woodland green edged one. It’s earthy and beautiful.) Looking forward to the rest of your cook :))
I have some farm market king oyster mushrooms -- usually saute them with some garlic but I love your idea of apple & red pepper. Going to give it a try!
honestly the bravest parts of these videos is Sohla's willingness to draw on camera, i could never
This was one of my favorite cooking videos on YT! I love mushrooms so it was so fun to watch you two build such a beautiful spread built around my favorite ingredient. 😍
OMG how much I enjoy your videos. And this challenge you both nailed it. Please keep going with these challenges. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Damn! NYT we really need this menu on the website. Everything looks stunning
Love the discussion 100% the back and forth when you have a vegan visiting.
Loooove watching them cook with real ingredients. Cant get enough of these two
i absolutely love this series and as someone who also LOVES mushrooms.. this was so perfect and inspiring!
Thank you. I appreciate having one non-meat episode.
Adding the coke to the gravy base was a genius move. So many great ideas in this video...
I love how they are getting real ingredients this season. And as ever Ham and Sohla are soooo creative❤❤❤
Always love seeing these two together!!
This is so delightful! I love watching these two. 😊
Is there a listing of what they made and maybe associated recipes?
That mushroom cake 🤯👏 Their creativity is limitless! Loved this vegan challenge and seeing these delicious, innovative dishes that save animals 💚🌱🍄
I just love these Sohla and Ham videos! And, I can't wait for the Sohla cookbook - so excited to receive it this Fall!
I press like before even watching - that’s how much of a sure thing these two are ❤️ love your content
Yay!!!! New Sohla and Ham video!!! My day has been made! ❤❤❤❤❤
If you only had Candy Caps (Lactarius rubidus) for the sticky toffee pudding. They have a flavor like fenugreek with maple. They make great butter cookies and we even use it in ice cream here in Mendocino County (CA). I noticed they used winter chantarelles, which have a more earthy flavor than the yellow chantarelle. The morels should have been the star, IMHO, but what and excellent vegan feast in such a short time! Just found Sohla and Ham here, and it's so much fun! Thanks.
As a sad man with a wife, I have to say this absolutely brings me to tears and I wish they were of joy, oh! I do
i never want this series to end.
A great fundraiser would be a raffle to pick the ingredient and then see the filming.
Another amazing episode! Love you two!
love this series every. single. time.
I've wanted to taste all their meals theyve made in this series but I think this one especially just because many dishes I can't even really imagine the taste 😂 also it looks so delicious still
Yusssss, more Sohla and Ham! Perfect to begin the long weekend 😁
This is what being married to your best friend looks like and I love watching these two work. It’s like they share one brilliant brain. Incredible 🥹
We need the outtakes and we need to see other people's reactions to trying their food. I feel like these two are probably too sedate for the reaction their delicious looking for probably deserves lol
Been waiting for a new episode of this series, yay!!!!
I am going to try and make every dish from this episode over the next few months, everything looks so delicious!
Great episode as always! As someone who has avoided mushrooms their whole life this made me excited to try them again
The “morel” of the story ❤
You two are superheros! I am always so happy when you accept a new challenge. You are inspirational*
I love the dynamic between them
That celeb cameo at the end!! 😂 Love Ham and Sohla, any day there’s a new video with them in my subscriptions feed is a good day!
When are we getting more mystery menu episodes? I need some inspiration for the new year
I really love these 2 jiving and playing off each other!! Couple goals!
Loved the sound and music in this episode!
thank you for a vegan episode, everything looked fantastic!
Somebody give sohla a cutproof glove!
Always enjoy these videos ❤
Really great episode. I so enjoy watching Sohla and Ham! Would love the recipe for that roast.
these two are amazingly talented at their craft
Holy cow! Great musical groove you found, Sohla! Simultaneous cooking!
This is so fun! I love their videos!
wow nice job.... I love how you two finish each others thoughts.... been watching you since the pandemic inspired apartment cooking with the furry babies.... miss those guys :)
Sidenote, your shirts are always great
This was wildly creative, and a fun challenge to watch.
I liked how this one had Sohla redrawing a couple of the recipes, the planning is always my favorite
Ooooooo I wish they went for duxelles! It's great as a vegan dish, too. Always good to see ya'll slaying in the kitchen
Wow, as a 99% plant based eater I feel catered to in the best way!! So jelly of this mushroom bounty
What's the 1%?
no one can be perfect 100%. what if you swallow a bug lol @@mon6745
Had a random feeling to watch a previous episode and this here! What a treat :')
I'd definitely try some of these but I'm mostly here to congratulate them on the baby.
love them, love this! thankyou!
The amount of mushrooms they can readily and easily name 🤯🤯 so amazing.
They're back! Really been loving Sohla and Ham. Just such a positive vibe they have that makes my day!
Loved this episode so much
wait they had a restaurant?!??! when?? where!?!?
