Dude I'm having such a hard time catching bass recently, I'm a bank angler and restricted to where I can fish. I normally fish at the local boat launch, the bass are only smallmouth, they won't even pick up that drop shot. Any advice?
If I had to point out the MOST important tip in this, it is the drag set. Tight on the hookset and then loosen IMMEDIATELY to allow for play (just make sure to tighten it back before your next cast!). This is such an overlooked and underrated tip, and I can tell you that since I have done this (saw it last year in either a Flukemaster or TacticalBassin vid) I have landed SO many more fish. Before I started doing that, I would set the hook, but often they would shake it because I didn't allow enough play. Thank you SO MUCH for mentioning that tip, your vids are amazing as always!
Bass fishing is there anything better and I am addicted too it I am now 14 two years ago I started my channel and I am damn proud of it and I am finally getting close too my 1 k sub goal !!!
I absolutely hate casting a dropshot rig or really anything with a long leader like that. So much so that I would rather use a slip float and set the depth to reach the fish. Great technique but a pain to cast for me.
Really informative Tyler, this was very helpful, especially how you tied the hook and maneuvered it around the line to ensure the hook laid out. Great to learn
Did you ever try rigging a drop shot rig using a jig instead of the weight? I do a good amount of fly fishing for trout and the nymphing rigs we use are kind of similar to drop shot rigs. One heavy fly to bounce on the bottom and a lighter fly or streamer in the water column. Next time i go bass fishing i want to try a drop shot rig with some form of crawfish immitating jig instead of the weight. 2 baits has got to be better than one right??
I only use half ounce weights for drop shot. Strong current or no current because i like being able to cast further and im usually fishing fairly deep water with drop shot
I’m a new subscriber. Thirty years ago as a kid I caught tons of largemouths by using Slug-Gos on beds. Life happened and I got away from fishing for quite a while. I’m now able to get back into it and I’m not catching much so I turned to RUclips. Tyler crushes these instructional videos. I had no idea what I was missing. I had no idea what a drop shot was. I now have hope. This is great!
The thing with sport fishing is that they don’t want to eat the fish they just “want it to be late for something. You are late. I got caught. Liar show me the inside of your lips” Mitch Hedberg
I plan on being up there with my grandkids next June. What is the best town for us to try to book a place up there? Love your videos and how you present the information! Best narration I've seen on any fishing channel. You have found your calling young man! Keep up the great work!
Appreciate another great video bro. Any tips for an angler who doesn’t have the equipment to find fish? I just use cheap depth finders from Walmart. Any tips to finding the fish would be great.
If they are biting it on the way down you prob don’t need to be using a drop shot. Time to start flipping if that’s how they want it. Drop shot is not always the dominant pattern.
ive actually had a lot of success of drop shotting shallow pond waters with a dropshot with about a foot leader. its a very muddy bottom so my theory is that i have more success with a drop shot because a texas rig would just kick up to much mud clouds to where the fish cant find the bait
I'd never thrown a drop shot before today. I had a blast with it! I got home and tied up two rigs. I just got to the part about the hook set. My experience was a little different, I actually did get a lot of really hard thumps, it was only a couple fish where all I felt was weight on the line. BTW they'll hit a drop shot in chocolate milk too. The lake I fish has about 6 inches of visibility, still worked fine. It's a really shallow lake too, fishing from the bank puts you in 4ft of water, max.
I want you to know that I have watched so many fishing videos you by far are the only interesting one that I have found. You are the only one that I don’t skip on the video or change it. I married into a family of hunters and fishers, I have never done any of it! Thank you so much for your content! I’ve never subscribed faster than your channel!!!!!!
Everyone says never lift up the sinker or never move the sinker when working the bait. But i see everyone on youtube do it! Also when i don't listen and think lets jig the dropshot with pauses in between and let the bait fall on slack line i also get bites and catch fish. So why i always here everyone say never lift the sinker off the bottom?
Good video Tyler. Just to mention, I've had that net for my last 3 trips and its great. Spinning rod in one arm and that net hanging off the other. Great for guys fishing alone. :-)
One false statement you said. “Unless you are in really shallow water”. This could not be farther from the truth, A drop shot with a 4-8 inch leader, is EXTREMELY deadly in shallow water around the bank, grass and shallow docks. Other than that, Great videos as usual
Hey Tyler, I live on a pond, literally my backyard and the water is about 6 inches or so of visibility. What color and lure do you recommend? Lots of largemouth. Any feedback would be appreciated
Tyler as a beginning bass fisherman, I love your videos and learn so very much from them. Thank you and keep them coming. How about some more bank videos for this of us that don’t have a boat.
1:45am and im watching your drop shot videos and planning to get up in a few hours to try my luck lol only place close to me is a tinyyyyy pond thats located in a park so everyone fishes it. Wish me luck, I'll need it😂
Absolutely fire video. I am gonna be in Northern Michigan for a big Army and Air Force exercise for 2 weeks. Let me know if you're around Northern Michigan, it would be awesome to meet up!!!
So if I have my 7.1 ft 2500 spinning reel rigged with monofilament I should probably put my P-Line 15/lb high vis green line on? I don’t have any fluorocarbon yet. Just monofilament 6&8/lb and some 15/lb PCXX (or something forgot the name) that is copolymer. I have a Cabela’s $25 gift card I need to use. As a new fisherman tying knots is nerve racking (lost two lures already) so I’ve only been fishing with my knock-off whopper Plopper and a Wild eye Storm shad 3/pk from Walmart. I just got two 10/pack’s of the Chinese mega bass dark sleeper’s. Probably overkill on cheap lures but I’m just learning the Palomar knot and learning on 6/lb monofilament is difficult. What knit for braided line?
Tyler I fished since I was 26 years old am 74 years old now never cought a fish I fished elephant butt in New Mexico I did the drop shot and Ned rig I get cought at the bottom and lost many zman lures when 2023 comes I give up fishing for good I fish only from bank
I was fishing a couple years ago and an old guy down from me was just hammering the bass and I couldn't get a bite. I walked down to him and when he saw what I was using ( jig / curly tail grub) he said "you're not gonna catch shit here with that" lol. He was using a drop shot and took the time to show me basically what you just did. I can't tell you how many fish I've caught with it since then and even started drift fishing it for Walleye on Lake Erie. Cool video and awesome tips man.
I hate this technique... I love catching them on it, because it works. But I have to force myself to drop shot. I've won tournaments on it. But I truly battle being this slow. Great video. Thanks for all you do for those that follow you. God bless
Good explainer. ZMan all the way on the drop shots. TRDs are my jam. Didn't know strike king borrowed the Elaztech! Another good teacher of the drop shot is Brian Latimer. Great vid!
Good stuff Tyler! Question: Are you trying to imitate a bait fish with a drop shot? I can see that but, if you put a finesse worm on there, worms don't suspend, they crawl across the bottom. Seems like a worm on there wouldn't appear natural to a bass. So, better to put a bait fish type lure on than a worm? Thanks!
Him worrying about getting the fish out of the water but me sitting here worried about him putting his hoodie sleeve in the water trying to get the fish
The drop shot is one of my new confidence baits I just moved to Waco for college and the bass up here in lake waco love a June bug utail worm definitely learned more from this video love watching your content
Tyler, loved the video but I don't think the rod and reel you give all the specs for is the same rod and reel you caught that PIG smallie on in your intro. Thhat intro rod and reel looked like a KVD model with the beautiful maroon color - but I could be wrong. ;-)
’m not sure what I said in the in the video, but the rod I caught the first fish on, and the one linked in the video description, are the same. 7’6” ML
I question if most of the fish 'want' the same thing at the same time. I agree that fish move shallow/deep more or less together, but unless there is an overwhelming presence of a certain forage, fish are opportunity feeders. It all depends on what swims by.
IF YOU DONT ABSOLUTELY SMASH THE LIKE BUTTON FOR 5 POUND SMALLMOUTH SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOU
Thanks Tyler! I know what to fish with now!
That was totally cool 😎 NY
What leader knot do you prefer to tie?
Dude I'm having such a hard time catching bass recently, I'm a bank angler and restricted to where I can fish. I normally fish at the local boat launch, the bass are only smallmouth, they won't even pick up that drop shot. Any advice?
On that rod you have in the description 7' med or med xfast?
Tyler is the best instructional fishing RUclipsr period.
Thank you Jordan!
Been saying this
Very nice video. Before I sub tho, do you answer questions by your followers?
Your not wrong
I’m helping a new fisherman 12year old by sending him all Tyler videos when he has a question.
If I had to point out the MOST important tip in this, it is the drag set. Bass fishing is there anything better and I am addicted too it I am now 14 two years ago I started my channel and I am damn proud of it and I am finally getting close too my 1 k sub goal !!!
Yee haw! Keep up the good work!
How did you get those amazing shots of the fish taking your bait ?!?
Been doing it for years! Look at my underwater playlist on the channel
I absolutely hate casting a dropshot rig or really anything with a long leader like that. So much so that I would rather use a slip float and set the depth to reach the fish.
Great technique but a pain to cast for me.
It's totally worth the hassle.
🤔 Monstrormousicality? 🤓👍
Really informative Tyler, this was very helpful, especially how you tied the hook and maneuvered it around the line to ensure the hook laid out. Great to learn
7,6 lol 😆 that's power shoting
We use 6ft pole with 8lb test
Good for you! I’m just giving my advice on what I think works best to be an efficient bass angler
That's actually a really good idea!
Your New York videos are some of my favorite videos. You need about a month up there!
I only use half ounce weights for drop shot. Strong current or no current because i like being able to cast further and im usually fishing fairly deep water with drop shot

New to fishing. Have watched dozens of drop shot instructionals and this one is by far the best.
Hello guys, i want to ask. Is anyone in western country has used the dropshot technique to catch barramundi?
Hey Tyler love your content. Keep it coming.
Have ya learned the FG yet? Epic editing btw 🔥
The thing with sport fishing is that they don’t want to eat the fish they just “want it to be late for something. You are late. I got caught. Liar show me the inside of your lips” Mitch Hedberg
This is aggravating! For some reason not getting notifications for your videos!
Awesome video! Now I have to catch up for the last month
Me too! I get some and not all!
Man that’s crazy!

I always use a zoom finesse worm.
You are the blippi of fishing. Love the videos !
I love that haha!
Which lake in New York is this video filmed on? It almost looks like Saratoga Lake or Lake George by the clarity of the water. Great video
Tyler… you don’t know how many of your videos I have in my “helpful fishing vids” playlist on RUclips 😂😂
Let’s go!
I need this video so bad 😊
Great video Tyler

When are we gonna see some local tournaments
Not for a while
How deep are you fishing for those thousand island smallies?
8-15
I've always wondered when you cast and just let it float to the bottom like this how you can tell if a fish bites it on the way down.
If they are biting it on the way down you prob don’t need to be using a drop shot. Time to start flipping if that’s how they want it. Drop shot is not always the dominant pattern.
Nice! Love small mouth they put up a good fight…large mouth when hooked are the laziest fish 😂 you just drag em into the boat
ive actually had a lot of success of drop shotting shallow pond waters with a dropshot with about a foot leader. its a very muddy bottom so my theory is that i have more success with a drop shot because a texas rig would just kick up to much mud clouds to where the fish cant find the bait

Hey Tyler, I live on a pond, literally my backyard and the water is about 6 inches or so of visibility. What color and lure do you recommend? Lots of largemouth. Any feedback would be appreciated
Lure all depends on the cover and structure. For color, look up “TylersReelFishing color”. I’ve made a video on it
Tyler as a beginning bass fisherman, I love your videos and learn so very much from them. Thank you and keep them coming. How about some more bank videos for this of us that don’t have a boat.

How would I use this in ponds off the banks and or what would work best I’m going today after work
Yep! Works great in ponds. You’ll see in tomorrows 100 ponds episode
Tyler casually landing a fish bigger than my pb while doing a RUclips intro.
That’s how we roll around here
Question: with the 7'6 ML rod why the 3000 spinning reel over les say a 2000?
I have found that with bass lures like Ned rigs, wacky rigs, small swimbaits, etc. the line comes off the spool better at that size best.

Is the drop shot mostly used off of boats since you are more ontop of the bait for the correct action? Vs standing at the side of a lake or pond?
