Why is it unreliable?!
@@mlsabc1236 Two major reasons. First, if you aren't _extremely_ careful about bringing the engine all the way up to temperature before you lean on it, it'll eat rod bearings at an alarming rate. Second, the VANOS system has some reliability issues.
Definitely one of the best sounding road cars world wide...

First time hearing this car, had to shed a tear.
My previous neighbor had this car and revved it alot. It was annoying sometimes when you wanted quiet. But he left a few year ago, now I miss that sound.

Wish those M5s had at least some reliability, they'd be one of the best cars ever made.

It really is not that bad. Do rod bearings every 100k km, which is like 1000-1500 EUR, Smg electric pump, when you have SMG pressure issues is like 300eur, the complete overhaul is like 800-1000eur. Clutch is about 500EUR, flywheel is about 1000EUR. 4 Vanos solenoids are 400 EUR new.
These are more or less all of the issues, so not that bad in my personal opinion. Just change oil every 6 to 10k km, top up if needed and send it.

kseries1981 you won’t even make it to a rod bearing failure because your smg shop trips will force you to sell it! Also those don’t happen if you change your oil and follow warm-up procedures... same goes for all post 2000 S62’s (high miles and odd incidents’ excluded of course). But hey! if you bought a hi-revving, 6 figure, V10 beast and bitch about it’s maintenance than you are THE guy every tech/foreman/service writer and loser salesman laughs about all day at work. Trust me on that one! There is a very good reason I could buy one of these all day for around 12-15k in SoCal yet both my e39’s would fetch double that a piece and a lot of it has to do with reliability. It is possible to find a nice well taken care of example but sadly no one really maintains cars..especially shit like this... like I tell everyone who wants one, get a manual and hopefully you’re a technician with deep pockets for module failures.
