Even though it's heavy on the "Scream" vibes (soundtrack included), this was the proper battle and closure for the series. The Times Square theater audience at the time erupted in cheers and applause. It felt like New Year's.
I was so hyped for a new Halloween movie. Still remember the tv spots and late night interviews leading up to the release. Sadly I wasn't old enough to see this in theaters back in '98 but I watched the hell out of it on VHS and anytime it was on TV.
Fun fact: The director of H20 initially wanted to only connect it with the first film. But to focus on the brother/sister connection, the director had to keep part two in continuity, as that was the film that made the revelation, though he minimized it by quite a lot. He chose not to have Myers be burned or have damaged eyes, and there is only one brief mentioning of the explosion at the hospital. Laurie's son, John, says "You told me yourself, you watched him burn." It's enough confirmation to make the H2 connection, but subtle enough to be easily missed, too.
So, there’s a fun, little “full circle homage” moment that happens in this move… In Act III of _Halloween (1978),_ Laurie sends the kids to seek help at the McKenzies’ house. Then in _Scream (1996),_ as an homage to _Halloween (1978),_ Mr. Becker tells Mrs. Becker to drive over to the McKenzies’ house to use their phone to call 911. And so here, in _Halloween H20 (1998),_ Laurie tells John and Molly to run over to The Becker’s house for help! I’ve always thought that that was a fun, little detail! ☺️
I'm pretty late but the H20 in the title was just an abbreviation of the title Halloween: 20 Years Later. A rather unnecessary style choice for the posters that caused a lot of confusion over the years
The Dr Loomis vs Michael connection is very similar to Dr Frankenstein vs his monster. Except Dr Loomis didn’t create Michael, instead he chose to do everything that he could to stop him. I look at the explosion sequence from part 2, as a nod to Dr Frankenstein and his monster, facing off in the fire. It’s nice to see Laurie mention about Frankenstein and how she has a self realization about how it relates to her.
I’ve always loved the scene with the mother and daughter in the gas station bathroom. It’s so short but the tension in it is _incredible,_ which is always great to see in slasher films. Ugh… that shot when the mother looks through the crack in the stall and sees Michael staring back at her/where she and her daughter are, in all of his horrifying glory, is sooo creepy and soooo great!! There’s just something about an ominous figure staring back at you through a window/bathroom stall crack/etc. that sends chills right down my spine!!
I personally love H20. It’s my favorite movie after the original Halloween movie. H20 was the prefect ending to the franchise but sadly Resurrection ruined that ending. But I just pretend Resurrection is Laurie’s bad dream!
My fav sequel of the series! The atmosphere, the cast, the Scream vibes, the climax, the nostalgia, Jamie's boycut, Michael's presence, THE CLIMAX!!! (Seriously, the ending hits every time.) H20 is the only one that really gets under my skin. The opening and rest stop scenes scare the absolute shit out of me, lmao.
This is an alternate sequel to Halloween II. That was Nurse Marion Chambers from parts 1 and 2. Apparently Laurie married Jimmy from part 2. First film in the series not set directly in Haddonfield. This would’ve been a decent trilogy. But the studio and Jamie kept the following sequel a secret until 2001-02.
Glad you enjoyed it. You mentioned how Laurie used a similar quote to in the original. Both the original and in Scream someone was told to the McKenzie's house to call the police, in Scream it was said by Kacey Becker's dad. In H20 Laurie said to go to the Becker's house.
Love the reaction. If I may, Fun fact about Donald Pleasence, well RIP, but he died about 8 months before the film was supposed to be released to theaters and so what they did because they had a scene at the end of Halloween 5 where you physically see Loomis die but they ended up changing the scene and you hear a guy they found that sounded a lot like Donald's scream so they did that to end the film of 5 and so the family would feel better doing that.
When she sent her son and his girlfriend to the neighbors house, she sent them to the Beckers. As in Casey Becker from Scream :) I don't think I would want to go to her house either ;)
Sooo, I saw this movie in theaters when it came out. It was great. While watching, we got all the way to the end, and we were at the part where Laurie high jacks the van with the "dead" Michael in it. He gets thrown through the windshield and Laurie hits the gas and rams Michael. We see Little Mikie Myers get thrown against the tree branch and the Van lands on him pinning him and.... WHITE SCREEN!! What the fuuuuuu....!!! That's how they end it?!?! Couldn't believe it. Then suddenly the room lights come on and some police men come in and snatch some theater hoppers who snuck into the movie. After a couple minutes they start the movie back up and we finish it off. But man if there was one place to perfectly fake end the movie that was the exact second. That was definitely an experience. Haha
But did you catch the Easter egg when she told John and his girlfriend to drive down to "the Becker's house"? The Becker's being a reference to Scream, Casey Becker's opening kill, and then when Casey Becker's father told his wife/her mother to drive down to the MacKenzie's house to call 911.
I have some issues with this one but I find myself watching it pretty often. I just love the story, characters, opening, and climax. Damn shame about the masks and recycled Scream score though. Great reaction

Yeah seeing commercials for this back in day got you pump for this. Had to see this in theaters lol. Showdown of the century course we didn't know this be just the first of many showdown between Michael and Laurie. They already ok the next one Halloween homecoming I think before we went to this so we knew there's be another so was pumped for the ending but like wtf lol. Read theories on internet and one that leaked that was the real one and was like that's the only good explanation lol better than it being a dream or him just popping his head back on and he's fine lol.
Halloween H20, Halloween II, and Halloween 5 are my faves. Halloween H20 was the first one I was able to see in the theater. And it was just perfect to me. Everything I wanted. No joke, I saw it six times in the theater (I was 16, just got my license...what else was I going to do?). Halloween Resurrection was a huge disappointment (random: It's my mom's favorite which drives me insane). The beginning is good-ish, but it changes H20's ending, which I thought was just the perfect ending for this "route" in the series.
H20 is definitely a fun movie but yeah before the zombie reboot there is one more movie to continue this called Halloween Resurrection 😉 Then they did the zombie movies and of course the blumhouse current timeline Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends(comes out October 2022). Love your reactions how into it you get. Oh wow you were a preteen in mid 2000s when the zombie movies came out? Damn you make me feel old lol 😆
Interested to see how Resurrection finishes this timeline. And yeah I feel like I’m getting older I’m headed towards 30 but still got a few years 😅 still young compared to how many movies are out there though. That’s why I’m trying to catch up see all of them. People were so shocked I hadn’t seen Halloween but to be fair a lot of people my age haven’t.
@@ScaredPale Oh yeah I agree I mean alot of people in their 2020and even early 30s haven't seen child's play either ive noticed haha and both Michael and Chucky are my two fav slashers so this year was fun for me haha. I'm a few years away from 40 haha so im like I just want to stay in my 30s since people still say I'm young at least people tell me I look 10 years than I actually am which is always a good thing haha. Right on. I look forward to your future reactions!
Yes! We’ll the show series or the films? Because I shockingly have only seen the first evil dead film so I know I HAVE to see at least the second and the other ones.
Michael when he killed their older sister was 6 and Laurie was 2 there is a 4 year age gap between the 2 when he escaped in the original 2 he was 21 and she was 17 and this movie takes place 20 years later making him 41 and her 37
I feel like this was most likely supposed to be the final movie before they got the bag (money) for this film & obviously that trillions of fan support for this film, the good reviews & all that drove them to make a sequel which isn’t even near as good as this film. They shouldn’t have tried to make a sequel to this film because then it cheapens the story, but I like to think that the next film doesn’t take place after this film tbh. This one is phenomenal to me
Saw this in theaters and thought it was great, now I don't like it as much to put it mildly. Th CGI mask lol, the horrible white, alien looking one, they used like 6-7 different masks. Sometimes mask would change scene to scene, also it looked like a CW dawson's creek halloween production. I don't think these movies work without haddonfield.
The superior version of Halloween 2018 with the perfect ending. Also I find your commentary about the length of time to be particularly interesting. Imagine if it was an extra 20 years on top of this it. Things start to get a little absurd at that point 😑.
To be honest, A Halloween movie with a scream feel doesn't sit right with me especially when Scream was influenced by Halloween. The greatest thing about this was Laurie's character which was handled well and also the ending. Everything else felt too much like scream. Michael felt like Ghostface in this movie and wasn't intimidating and the masks were terrible besides the scenes when they reused H6's mask. They never tried to explain the absence of 20 years, we don't even see the burned marks on Michael. I can appreciate the movie for trying to end it off and also getting rid of the convoluted storyline from the thorn trilogy. This would have been a satisfying ending which most fans agree but money like always continued more sequels. Halloween Ressurection is gonna make you angry but also laugh at how stupid it is. The next movie is the last of this timeline until the rebooted one in 2018 which actually erases everything besides Halloween 1. I also still recommend you revisit RZ's Halloween films. It would be nice to compare them. I think the first one, in particular, is not a bad remake.
I like Jamie Lee Curtis’s performance, however, I unfortunately don’t like the Movie, the Movie Scream had a lot to do with this Movie being made,in fact their both Dimension Films
This movie should of been the last Halloween movie. With Michael Myers it was the perfect ending. But so was Halloween 2 when Dr. Loomis sacrificed himself to blow up Michael Myers. But you are forgetting the movie studios number one rule. You cannot kill or replace or try to replace Michael Myers. Because if you do that ending will be retconed in the next movie. They did it when John Carpenter killed him off in Halloween 2. Then again when they killed him off at the end of Halloween 4. So obviously they're going to retcon this movies ending because they dared Kill him off once again. Next is the nunsense that is Halloween resurrection. I'm glad you enjoyed the smart writing of this movie. Because that goes out the window in the next one. Then there is Halloween 2018 I wanted to like it but I can't. Because it makes no logical sense from any logical point to me. Non spoiler Halloween 2 an Halloween H20 still works. Even if you remove the brother-sister relationship. Because you still have a psychopath trying to kill the one that got away. So he's still actively pursuing her of his own free will. But if you remove that part if he no longer actively pursued her of his own free will. Then the hole thing does not work that's all I will say. Other then I truly do not care about this movie franchise anymore. After Halloween 2018 an how the put Laurie Strode together with Michael Myers. I have zero interest in Halloween kills or Halloween ends. If it ends because Halloween 2, Halloween 4 an Halloween H20. Whore supposed to be the last Halloween movies as well. But O look there is still more Halloween movies. So at this point saying a Halloween movie it's going to be the last one. Is a running gag that never stops.
@@jaymorrison4886 It's hard to believe that movie had any thought behind it whatsoever. It's more like they had one small idea. Then made up the rest of it as they went. Because it's just so random from one scene to the next.
@@83shadow3 Lol, that’s exactly what it felt like. It was like someone did a good presentation to a studio head, got the go ahead for a film, then never did anything else with it until the 1st day of the shoot & they just started pulling shit out of their ass🤣
@@ScaredPale same. Also love Dracula. So, question 🙋♂️. What’s the next horror franchise that you’re going to do? I hope it’s Child’s Play/Chucky or Friday The 13th or both. Also, could you react to the movie called “Mother!”? It’s really good & the concept is the most scariest thing & the ending is one of the most traumatizing endings ever.
I like H20 well enough but I don't think it's really, well "Halloween-like" I guess? I also don't think it's writing is that interesting although that's a personal thing, it's all done well enough (if a little too direct at times imo) but I'm not one of the people who adore Laurie Strode and so the fact that really there is no theming going on (beyond very lightly touching on the original fate theme and I guess Laurie's ptsd though I think that is more a character element less a narrative theme) and the characters are all quite generic leaves me a bit cold. Say what you will about H6 but it had far more unique characters, was dripping in atmosphere, had some fairly strong theming and a lot more "Halloween-like" sequences and cinematography. H20 is like the total opposite of H6, it's way more light hearted (for a horror film), it's far simpler (I know H6 was a bit over complicated but I don't think they needed to just gut the series of any depth which imo they did do here outside of Laurie's vaguely defined ptsd and relationship with John), it doesn't once commit to a Halloween style stalk/chase sequence, it just feels very passive to me. Like I can enjoy watching it, but I won't think about it again afterwards. H6 has issues for sure, but I think about it a lot after watching it, little character details, set design elements, narrative themes, and so on all make it engaging beyond just passively watching. I don't get that with H20, or any of the films after this point tbh except for the second Rob Zombie one which I think is a very well made movie albeit not at all what the majority of the Halloween fandom wanted. But hey, most people love H20 and the 2018 film so they're obviously doing something right.
Great review. Love this film. Just one thing. No offense but you maybe shouldn’t reference “Jeepers Creepers” in any of your other videos cause you’re gonna start a riot lol. Especially in the comments. Idk 🤷♂️ if you know but that franchise was directed and created by an absolutely disgusting “human being” so anytime he’s referenced or his movies are referenced… it starts a whole thing. More people are against him though than the people that say “I can separated the work/art from it’s creator” I personally don’t believe in that. I mean you can like what you want but I feel his movies should never be talked about it any good light and neither should he. He deserved life in prison but Hollywood is corrupted and twisted. That’s all I had to say. Sorry for this long paragraph.
I only just learned about this recently. Such a shame :( I agree I can’t separate the art from the artist. But it’s harder when a film takes on a life of its own outside of the person in question. For example looking at the actors performances or set design. There were so many other people involved in the making of the film, I honestly never even heard of or paid attention to who directed it since it was tied mainly to my nostalgia and when I was younger I didn’t look up those things. Like I can’t watch Woody Allen films cause the whole film screams Woody Allen. But I still watch Rosemarys Baby even though it’s a Polanski because Mia Farrows performance in it is Everything and what defines the film for me. Ugh it’s such a nuanced topic with grey areas , but most importantly these creeps and real life monsters deserve justice. End of rant
@@ScaredPale yeah, I agree. It’s a shame when some people do absolutely awful things but because they’re in Hollywood- they get a freebie or they make it all go away with their money. It’s such a shady business. Like for instance/example the guy that played Shang Chi in the new marvel movie, he compared homosexuality to p*dophilia in an old Reddit and people questioned it for a minute but then moved on and I don’t think he ever even explained himself or apologized but because he had other drama with drama hating him for saying he didn’t want to ever go to chine or whatever and them banning his movie, people decided to focus on mainly that and forget what they had discovered of him. I’m still confused of what had happened with that and why it was dropped. Maybe I haven’t heard all the details, I wasn’t staying in the circle about it.

Your right about resurrections writing
@@jaymorrison4886 It's hard to believe that movie had any thought behind it whatsoever. It's more like they had one small idea. Then made up the rest of it as they went. Because it's just so random from one scene to the next.
@@83shadow3 Lol, that’s exactly what it felt like.
It was like someone did a good presentation to a studio head, got the go ahead for a film, then never did anything else with it until the 1st day of the shoot & they just started pulling shit out of their ass🤣
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 it was basically 3 bad films in one
Oh boy now I’m nervous to watch resurrection hahah
You should watch & react to the original Frankenstein movie as well if you haven’t seen it already.
Probably my second favorite next to The Invisible Man. The Universal Horror classics are so good
@@ScaredPale same.
H6 & H20 are really ying and yang
Facts Michael was scary and dark and brutal in 6 the story was just bad but he was way more dark and brutal then this one
You’ve seen this film before. You’re too on Q
Swear I haven’t!
1998
Halloween 1 was great. 3 and 4 were good. All of the others sucked.
Not a fan of this one. Josh Hartnett has possibly the worst hair in cinema history. This feels like Halloween on a 90s WB set.
I didn't like this reboot
You look like Kate Winslet!
