- It's out with the old and in with the new this week as we prepare to welcome our baby on board our narrowboat. We're pretty excited about our new compost toilet, as well as all the baby clothes we have to find room for :-) (Ps. Thank you to everyone who has knitted something for our new crew member!)

For those of you just joining us, welcome! We're Vic and Jo and we've been narrowboating around the UK for the last few years on our 54ft narrowboat Zero. Last year we decided to give up our jobs in the city and add another boat to our fleet in hope of turning it into a travelling cafe and becoming full time boating baristas. We'll also be having a baby in just a few months time!

Holly. Please do Not destroy/throw away, your man's dreams (The Guitar). One of my treasured possessions is a Banjo which I learned to play, but not well. It is still on of my prised possessions , I can;t play it any more, I am in my mid 70, my fingers just won't do my bidding. Having Dreams is Very important to being happy. Don't ignore your large baby when the new one arrives, either.. Good luck, thanks for the smiles you give me.

Love watching you both prepare for baby! They actually need less than you think - and clothes never wear out because they are outgrown so quickly 👼. Compost loos are fantastic if used properly; coir compost or even ordinary garden centre bagged compost is a necessity because that is the secret to easy 'breakdown' and ease of emptying. A bit of advise from one who uses this form of loo: empty the 'wee' container every day if possible rather than waiting for the container to fill. Urine is 'strongly scented' which makes it less pleasant the more you have stored! Funnily enough the 'poo' part is a doddle as long as you follow the instructions and the resulting compost can go on any garden safely! Laughed out loud at the buggy stalking you through the golf course 😂. Take care and make the most of sleeping through the night!

Just seems like yesterday that I held my baby boy for the first time, but really it was 41 years ago. Those clothes, he will outgrow, before he wears them out, so don't save something for a special day, make everyday special.

I remember the pre baby gathering and preparing that is still kind of happening 3 and a half years later.
I helped make a composting toilet of a similar design for my sister’s trailer last summer. I got started on one for me and then got side track by helping to build a water tank shed for needy friends. Hopefully this winter I’ll get it made. Tell him to get playing the guitar. Mine used to help get my little Zella to sleep many nights.
i guess you won't be traveling or running the Holly Cafe for awhile. I'm sure you're both more than anxious for the baby to arrive. Rest now before the sleepless nights arrive. Enjoyed the dart game comedy a lot. Thanks for sharing

@@irenedavo3768 Yes Irene, but in the last video they said they were staying there for awhile. And, I haven't seen anything lately on running the cafe. I'm sure they will travel and run the cafe after the baby gets settled a bit and their new boat is ready.
Re. The guitar, Vic should convert to the ukulele! I think it's so much more fun to play, easier too, smaller, cheaper etc. And baby will have fun playing it when they're old enough 😊

You have inspired me to get back into baking. I am the leader of a test team on an MOD project and I now take in a cake to relieve the Monday morning blues. So far I have done Easy Chocolate Cake, Coffee and Pistachio, Carrot Cake. This week’s cake is Lemon Poppyseed Cake with Lemon icing. Cakes usually disappear in no time, just hope the flight test guys can still get in their flying suits 😂
I got a bit carried away, I baked Coffee and Pecan not pistachio. My cake tasters say the Coffee and Pecan is nicer than Coffee and Walnut.

BTW, I have a similar basket that’s not nearly that large; I keep it standing on its narrow, longer side on a kitchen shelf; it’s filled with lots of glass storage containers’ snap-on lids.
In my early days as a fledgling truck driver, I transported treated sewage to syon Park from sewage ponds by truck. Down London way.
This was then dried and used as compost on the plants.

I remember when I felt all giggly and nervous about the first one. Now my babies are 33 & 35 and to be honest I still get nervous about them sometimes. Plus very fortunately we all have many silly giggle fests about nothing.

I take it they have figured out the new rules for disposing of the solids with the new stool. What did they recommend for the mix? When I saw the comment about a reed basket, my first thought was a large one with a pad to use for a baby bed or for when you are working on Holly. Don't reckon you will be using cloth diapers.....no way to keep up with washing on a boat. Fair weather.
Cloth nappies with a disposable liner are a good compromise.

Looked a little precarious, just sitting on the wood top without the seat being installed. I was afraid maybe you would put a little too much weight towards the center and it would crack it didn't, but with the seat on that spread the weight out across the whole piece of wood.
