Having watched you since back in Covid lockdown I think you do really well in all aspects of your life, You've created a wonderful practical venue for your business. You've started a family ,its been great watching William grow from a small baby into a bouncing boy with a character of his own .Through all the trials and tribulations you seem to keep your sense of humour and are still be ready to try new things. Well done both of you ,I admire you an awful lot. Stay as cool as you are. Cheers from me in Canada.
The exuberance of youth is so wonderful! I say this as my 84th birthday draws to a close with your gift of another fulfilling video experience. You really must understand that your presentations are a joyful and refreshing experience for a lot of people! You work very hard but you are more successful than you probably realize. Keep smiling and please find a way to continue sharing. My wife and I are in the U.S. but will be looking at the Forth Bridge again in a few days! Unfortunately, we're not traveling south this time so a trip to buy coffee and cake on The Café Boat will have to wait.
My grandfather used to deliberately open and slam the oven door when grandmother was baking a cake so it would "fall" in the middle because he loved them that way. My dad, of course liked his cake heavy like that too, but he knew better than to pull that on my mom. All of that said, I would bet there still are folk who like their cake "heavy" and would be happy to pay to take it off your hands.
Vic, as fans of Sexy Beast, we have to say this was the most hilarious introduction in any vlog we have ever seen. Although we were quite partial to the David Attenborough impression this was just the best yet. How we all laughed… you are a comedy genius 😂.
It may be a little late, but covering the windows outside with board or sheet material to stop the sun hitting and passing through the glass is a good way to help reduce all that extra heat from what architects call 'solar gain'. Of course, little can be done about the air temperature, short of air con - but that requires all windows and doors to remain closed - not easy if you're selling.
Vic love the sound of your iced coffee but I find chunky ice cubes weakens the coffee too quickly, have you thought of crushed cubes? And dear Jo, to even attempt baking in that heat was courageous!! But ‘wrong uns’ make great trifle 😉 🌟🌟👏👏💐 Joan
Hi Jo, Vic and William, it was as a great pleasure in meeting you last week as we briefly stopped to pop to the nearby Shop and Post Office. Some days you need to have a rant, we should know! Hope we are still local when you move on, Dawn and Dale on NB Bunnies Warren.
Oh my goodness the heat!!! Hats off to you for even being able to turn the oven on during this heat wave. High five to Vic for that foam art and giving us ideas for iced coffee. William? Well as usual he steals the show with the those beautiful eyelashes and candid comments xx
Love this vlog, guys! Vic, your intro was hilarious! that drone shot was brilliant! You are very creative and your editing is superb! I anticipate with bated breath your next intro demonstrating your humorous acceptance on whatever challenges you face in your lives. Jo, you are a phenomenon! You still smiled and maintained so much positivity even with lack of sleep and baked away in a blazing hot boat! Thank you for showing such honesty when your cake sunk. I'm sure it tasted wonderful anyway! Even when you discovered your stock loss from the freezer not running on capacity, you STILL took it all with positive acceptance. Big hug to beautiful William who is growing up so fast. xxx 🥰
Love the fact that you are using local markets. Worked the markets for 20 years and was devastated to have to give them up. I think the further south you are the more chance you have to keep your business. Northern markets really struggle, due to the north south divide in incomes. Levelling up, no such thing, pack of lies.
Really don't know how you keep going ...baking...coffee making...William sitting...moving boats...wish I had one ounce of your energy !.....ever thought about a chilli latte vic? Had one the other day and people were queuing behind me.....just a thought but go easy on the chilli .....Keep up the good work ...vlogs are so good
I love the clever intros you put together for you videos Vic. And Jo, watching you cook drives me crazy. My stomach begins to make noise as I see you cakes come out of the oven. William is growing up a weed; an adorable weed of course. I know I say this all the time, but I really enjoy following you three. You always warm my heart, and bring a smile to my face.
haha love the sexy beast reference I've just binged watched your channel for like 4 days LOL Been sick off work and just really enjoyed watching your journey through time. Don't fett being in a house now, the content is still great and the way you've evolved the narrow boat/lifestyle vlog is perfect. You've done great!
26/8/22 today we were coming away from Alrewas , saw Vic cycling towards village , I said that's man from boat my husband not a clue because I watch you , we had lovely time playing ukuleles for their festival . take care
I think you have done fantastically well Jo by continuing to bake in that heat 👏👏. So many canalside pub eateries stopped doing food altogether which really messed up some people's travels. It must have been terribly frustrating after baking in the heat to get a couple of 'slightly imperfect' lemon drizzle cakes so sending you a virtual hug 🤗. I know the heat this year is exceptional but is it possible to remove the windows and replace with fly screens while you are cooking??? Vic always seems so calm and supportive - you have a winner there! William is turning from a baby to a toddler before our eyes 💗. Stay safe. Keep as cool as possible.
Thanks all, I appreciate the time you spent on baking in the heat.I am pleased that daddy's helping with william. Hi william. Youns take care and God bless.
That reminds of when of when I was married. My wife used to do a lot of baking mostly for other people, so when she had a "disaster" me and our 4 boys were always happy to get rid of it for her. You are doing great. I look forward each week for you video's. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
Having worked for an independent cafe in Cambridge, freezing pre-made cake was the lifeblood. Add a frittata and/or salad to your menu and...win win. Long time subscriber, first time watcher, new time father. Thanks for the confidence/content X
Loved the video this week! It flows beautifully from one interesting topic to another. You are both great presenters and so eloquent. I’m sure you’re right about the heat reducing the number of visitors. I remember that you had ice creams last year. They might be more appealing than hot coffees.
I put a lot of my baking into the freezer, even scones, I know a lot don’t like scone when they have been in the freezer. I defrost a couple for us to have with a cuppa in the evening, 15 seconds in the microwave and they taste as if just out of the oven. I need to do a big bake☺️
This was one of your best videos...guys you nailed it. I think a little of the unsuccessful along with some of the frustrations shows the real people in this video. They get hot, tired and maybe even sad sometimes along with all the brightness that is the usual ways of how you live. Sorry about your cakes falling...It was so hot though I don't know how you can bake at all. Bless little William, cutting teeth is no easy job and it does hurt a lot. Y'all have a Blessed day and I hope next week is a little cooler for you.
You are an amazing baker Jo, it must be difficult baking onboard a metal boat in the hot weather! Life is a journey don’t beat yourself up over things that have gone wrong, you are both doing a fantastic job and with little William in tow too. Take care you 3. Lots of love. xxxx
Truly enjoy watching your daily vlogs, watching your business grow and watching that adorable little guy William grow. Its so great you are both able to spend this time with him.
Hey Jo, do you want a good recipe for a sponge? My Mum, who is now 97 and still going, used to do this decades ago and was a huge hit with anyone. So, after cutting the sponge in half, you make up a lemon, passionfruit icing mix, then butter the bottom cake with a goodly amount. Don't skimp. Then put a rather healthy delicious layer of whipped cream on top, place the top cake on and then ice the top with more of the lemon, passionfruit icing mix. Try out the icing mix so you get the amounts right to taste and you will find that this will sell like hotcakes. It makes an absolutely beautiful sponge! You'll find this will be a premium sponge so you can charge a little more and believe me, it will disappear quickly.
Another great vid just remember customers are a lot more forgiving with homemade cakes that they are with shop bought ones they love the small imperfections, So dont be hard on your self you are a fantastic baker and never loose that passion and confidence. safe voyages looking forward to the next vid
Wow what a year, you make me feel so unproductive, really enjoy all your videos, great content, great music, adventures, day to day life, a little history and that gorgeous baby thrown in for good measure. Love It, Melbourne Australia
In America in August when the thermometer goes into the 90s or 100s with high humidity, we call it "The Dog Days of Summer." Even dogs are in bad moods and get in fights over nothing.🙀
I had to laugh when you talked about learning what the people want. I think this is so common when you open a business. I had a handmade soap business and was determined to have all these wonderful and unique soap scents. I must have had about 40 at one point. However, it soon became very clear that people wanted oatmeal, milk &honey, lavender and anything with patchouli in it. I hate patchouli yet there I was making patchouli soaps and smelling like wet dirt , But you have to give the people what they want if you want to be successful. LOL!!! At least you learned your lesson quickly and now it is onward and upward. That baby the the most gorgeous eyes I have ever seen on a child!
Argh!! I have noticed the comeback of Patchouli lately. In the late 60's and seventy's patch was all the rage,...every hippie smelled of patch. I thought that debacle was behind us but noooooo-sir-ee-bob, patch is back with a vengence,..at least here in Vancouver it is,... its evident more often than it deserves to be!!😰
@@rickc5303 Well I am in so Cal in a small, artsy mountain town and that is where all the old hippies seem to be! LOL!!! Which would explain their obsession with patchouli. That stuff smells like wet dirt to me and I could do without ever smelling it again. One of my top selling soaps was a patchouli, pine and sandalwood blend. Oh how I hated making that , but people would buy it like crazy. Argh!
@@cackleberrycottage2340 Sandalwood is OK, Pine,.. maybe just at Christmas,.... but Patchouli?!? Nobody should ever smell like wet mouldy dirt. Maybe it would be OK if one was one of those Truffle hunting pigs but beyond that It just aint right and a good spin cannot be put on it. LOL!
@@rickc5303 I totally agree. Luckily, I closed my business and now I only make soap for myself and family and friends, so I never have to smell it or make that blend ever again! So many nicer things to smell than patchouli.
Brill Ray Winston impression at the start - I was watching it thinking “is he going to do the famous swearing quote?” 😂. Great vid as always 👍 Williams eyes are beautiful by the way, and he looks so happy. Our boys (one is a William too 😊) have very blue eyes too. I didn’t know you could freeze cakes by the way and have them come out ok - you learn something new! Have a good week 👋
I think you are remarkable. I cannot believe all that you accomplish on a daily basis, including raising an obviously happy little boy. Well done, Vic and Jo! Leigh
I always look forward to your new video. I love to bake and loaf pan cakes make it so easy, lemon, or cinnamon. Everyone loves them. Thanks for giving us a look in on your life and business.
That looks really good 👍 👌. J too have pitched things or made hasty decisions I've had time to regret. Like handing over bags of personal photos to someone who can't really appreciate the relationship involved. Oh well. Putting it out there. Glad to see you're making progress 😌 🙌 ☺️. Looking forward to seeing what the Spring and summer ☀️ bring
It was great to meet you and finally get to try the lemon drizzle cake, it was delicious! As was the latte and hot chocolate. Thanks both and William for your vlogs x
Looks way tooo hot for William, we were on a Avanti train recently to Edinburgh 32°c no air con people were getting off at each station to cool down, fun times.
What a cute video. Young William seems happy as a clam. Baking on a boat can never be easy, it that heat, well...it made me laugh. I'm glad it survived the edit.
Jo, Vic and William, Loved the Vlog this week. Great opening too. Its been so hot, I know how you all feel. Still you pushed yourselves onwards. Good to see you making your delish cakes. Nice to see William doing William things. Another well crafted and edited Vlog. Have a great week. Take care.
Growing up in the 50s, after rationing had just finished, our mum used to make our evening cocoa by mixing the cocoa powder with condensed milk into a paste and then pouring on the boiled water. Your mix is the only other time I've heard of using condensed milk like that. William's coming along fine. He'll be doing his A Levels next week!
I cried at the sight of the lemon drizzle in the bin. Mail them over next time please. 🇨🇦 and quite the double take - young William looked too much like my #3 grandson some 20 years ago. Stay 😎
Great Vlog as usual, and your openings are just brilliant. Music was great especially loved the Cumbia . 🎶 🎼 I can’t imagine baking in that heat Jo, don’t beat yourself up. William gets cuter each video. Glad that things seems to be cooling down there and I wish you all the luck with the Cafe. I know if I were in the UK I would definitely be a customer. Thank you 🙏😊🤗❤️ Kathy
Another brilliantly entertaining vlog! And good to see how you’ve adapted to your William and lemon drizzle driven lives and still making it all work 👍❤️
Thank you for the print of Holly, received it a few weeks ago and it's just beautiful. Has pride of place on my work desk! The hand written note was a nice touch too! All the best to you three x
Thanks for this video, very interesting. Considering the heat we've had off & on this summer I think you've done really well to keep cooking your delicious cakes. It's good to be able to look back on the year & realise how much you've learned & adapted how you operate as you go along. Keep up the good work & continue to enjoy your lovely lifestyle with that scrummy little William to keep you grounded.
I can’t imagine accomplishing what you have been doing in the heat. You’re to be admired for your decisive stick-to-it-of-ness! If I were anywhere nearby, I’d be getting lemon drizzle slices of cake whenever possible. That’s such a delicious cake. William is delightful, in fact, you two parents are delightful as well. We’ve had three three-day heat waves and one eight-day one (over 90° for the high temperature) which is extremely unusual here in Portland, Oregon. I’m thankful beyond measure for my portable air conditioner and my three fans which make my studio apartment suitable for somebody who’s almost 75 years old. I’ve stayed in as much as possible and I’m thankful that I get a ride to and from work with a friend with a car instead of having to walk over to the bus stop and wait for the bus each day. I don’t own a car, hallelujah! See y’all next time! ♥️♥️♥️
Our magic trick for teething was a couple of ice cubes or balls ((balls are best) in a piece of course cotton or linen and secured with a rubber band which makes a good handle. They love it and you will too.
I'm a 71 year old man, but that lemon drizzle going in the bin had me close to tears! 😁😘
I would have sold it at a discounted price.
Feed it to the 🦆 🍰 ?
Me too !,
Hankie with four knotted corners, my fathers favorite beach going attire.
My heart sank when I saw the lemon drizzle in the bin 😢thinking it would have been lovely with custard 🫣
One of my favourite films ever ....You were just perfect !
Aww lassie, don’t despair…you are both doing a fantastic job and also raising that wee soul. 😘 😘
Better than sitting down all day in front of a screen inside a stuffy building - which some people call 'work' !!
With disaster cakes my mum always used to say "that'll be ok with a drop of custard on it". So that's what we got for pudding

Put some car windscreen reflectors on your windows and it won’t get so hot inside.
It's the metal of the narrowboat that heats up to massive proportions, the windows are a drop in the ocean (canal 😂)
William’s a happy little sausage isn’t he, I often find myself skipping backwards to rewatch a giggle or two ! Thanks Vic and Jo , great show. X
A sunken cake with cream/ice cream/custard is dessert for the family.
Suggestion: similar to Wonky Veg but about Wonky Cakes - Take Them As You Find Them, then you could use the occasional sunken cake.
just going to say the same, sell it at the end of day, cover you're costs at least .

Or the last resort should be to eat them yourselves. Freeze in slices if you don't want to have to eat through a full cake. 😃
You could cut up the usable pieces of the cake layer it with blueberries and some fresh cream served in a coffee beaker as today’s bakers special
Gosh, that would be lovely 😍

OMG freezing stuff is absolutely the way to go. So few folks understand how important a tool the freezer is for a kitchen.
Top marks for the Ray Winstone impression at the beginning. 😀

All I can say is congratulations on your hard work 🤗👍🍰🍰🍦

Lovely vlog as always 💗
It was great to meet you and finally get to try the lemon drizzle cake, it was delicious! As was the latte and hot chocolate. Thanks both and William for your vlogs x
Looks way tooo hot for William, we were on a Avanti train recently to Edinburgh 32°c no air con people were getting off at each station to cool down, fun times.
What a cute video. Young William seems happy as a clam. Baking on a boat can never be easy, it that heat, well...it made me laugh. I'm glad it survived the edit.
Great homage to the opening of Sexy Beast at the beginning
What a beautiful young fellow! Juggling all life's demands is undoubtedly challenging, so thank you for sharing so generously, and humorously.
And good to see how you’ve adapted to your William and lemon drizzle driven lives and still making it all work 👍❤️
Very good opening scene homage to Ray Winston in Sexy Beast...one of my favorite films ;) Simon @theinkwell
I'm sure the lemon drizzle is good but the sponge, cream, and blueberry compote combination had my mouth watering.
Continued success to you two (3) as you navigate the canals as entrepreneurs.
Good to see you are getting it all worked out, wishing you every success.
Nice one have a great week 🙂☕️🍰✌️
Our magic trick for teething was a couple of ice cubes or balls ((balls are best) in a piece of course cotton or linen and secured with a rubber band which makes a good handle. They love it and you will too.
Was heartbroken for you over the binned cakes - so disappointing! But you turned it around - good for you! Great video x
