The accident was a devastating blow to Morrow's family, friends, and colleagues, as well as to the wider film community. It raised serious questions about the safety protocols in place on movie sets, particularly when it came to stunts and special effects. Many in the industry were left wondering how such a tragedy could have occurred, and what steps needed to be taken to prevent similar accidents in the future. In this video, we’re taking a look at what happened on that fateful day, as well as the long-lasting effects that it had on the film industry. In the aftermath of Morrow's death, there was a widespread push for new safety standards and regulations in the film industry.
Actors, directors, and other film professionals spoke out about the need for greater oversight and accountability when it came to stunts and special effects, and many advocated for more rigorous safety training and on-set protocols. Studios and production companies also faced increased scrutiny, with many questioning whether they had done enough to ensure the safety of their employees. Over time, the film industry did begin to make significant changes in response to Morrow's death. New safety standards were put in place, and safety training for actors and crew members became more rigorous and comprehensive. The use of helicopters and other dangerous stunts became more closely regulated, and many in the industry began to take a more cautious and responsible approach to filmmaking.

As a side note, Director John Landis chose to the two young kids from a nearby talent agency because the Screen Actors Guild did not allow their members who were 16 years of age or younger to work past 9pm. Since John Landis wanted to shoot the scene at night after 10pm, he went around the SAG and hired these two kids. Steven Spielberg and John Landis were good friends. Spielberg also voiced his concern to his friend about the risks posed by the scene. After this accident and the subsequent criminal and civil trials, the two friends never spoke to each other again.

As a youngster, I used to rush home from school to watch my favorite TV show, Combat!!!! I know he will be remembered as Vic Morrow, but to me he will always be Sgt. Saunders. What made Combat so good was the fact that all the actor's were relatable and genuine; I will always remember Cage, Kirby, Doc, Little John, and Rick Jason as the Lieutenant. Sadly, I read that Rick killed himself.

Of all controversial events that each took place during production of a particular film, this is easily up there in the Top Five. Vic Morrow and the two children didn't have to die... and John Landis shouldn't be allowed to get away with this nearly half a century after the fact.

There wasn't any reason to even use kids. Vic Morrow should have been carrying dummies. In fact, a stuntman should have been carrying dummies. He would have been in a better position to avoid the crashing helicopter, especially since he wouldn't have worried about saving the dummies.

My grandpa owned the helicopter that crashed, and the pilot, Dorcey Wingo, was employed by my grandpa as well; Western Helicopters Inc., from where the helicopter was rented, was owned by my grandpa, and the helicopter company Rocky Mountain Helicopters.
My twin brother and I were staying with him and our grandma for a couple weeks when, in the very early morning of July 23rd, 1982, the phone rang at around 3:45 am; it woke me up, and I could hear the alarm, and the sadness in my grandpa’s voice. He was a WWII B-17 (Flying Fortress) Bombardier from 1943 to 1945, and this was just as horrific to him as the things he experienced while serving in WWII.
I was four years old, and there was a palpable feeling of deep sadness in the air. As a child, it felt like a knife could cut the air. It was a feeling that made me scared.
I walked into the living room. My grandpa had already finished the call. He was sitting on the couch, hunched over a little bit, his hands pressed on his face, and my grandma was comforting him. I know now she was trying to comfort him. I asked if everything was okay. My stomach felt sick seeing my grandpa in that state.
My grandma walked over to me. I asked if Grandpa was sick. She said there had been an accident with one of Grandpa’s helicopters in California and told my twin and me not to worry. Grandpa is okay; he’s just a little sad. Then she gently put her arm around me to lead me back to bed. My twin brother came out, too, and she said if we went to sleep, we could have a treat in the morning.
Not only did this accident devastate my grandpa that three souls were taken (two of which were innocent children), but it was also his helicopter and his pilot. He was devastated.
He wasn’t sure just yet if it was a problem or not with the helicopter and, if so, their deaths on his hands. Three innocent lives were taken, and it shook him to the core.
I want to note that if the helicopter was found culpable for the accident, the FCC would have revoked his company’s flight licenses, and he and his company (which he built from nothing so many years prior with his brother) would be shattered. He would be ruined.
This accident sent a shockwave through my entire family, as well as great sadness for everyone involved; we held no blame for anyone; it was a tragedy and a tragic accident.
Thankfully, after a lengthy and intense investigation (which kept our family on pins and needles for almost a year), the courts found Dorcey Wingo (my grandpa’s company pilot) innocent, and the helicopter was found to be in perfect working order. It was bittersweet, to say the least.
Up until his death just a few years ago, this accident haunted him. When I went to visit him in the hospital (his health was not well), he had his head turned looking out the window, and I could sense that same feeling of sadness filling the room. He turned to say hello, and I asked how he was feeling. He said, “Ohh, the same old.” I could tell something profound was on his mind. He suddenly said: “I wish I never started that damn helicopter company.” Tears were streaming down his face. Tears from one of the strongest people I knew and loved.
He was a man who had seen and experienced some of the terrifying events during his service in WWII and had seen countless fellow servicemen on the B-17 Bombers be torn to pieces in front of him by the bullets of German fighter planes that were massive in size and had horrendous consequences for those caught in its fire. Also, my grandfather’s Grandpa was a Jewish immigrant born and raised in Germany who came to America long before the war. But he still faced prejudices, even here in the USA.
I’m giving only a sliver of the extraordinary story of his life. However, in that hospital room on that day, all he wished for was not to have started his helicopter company. That day, the deaths of Vic Morrow, Myca Dinh Le, and Renee Shin-Yi Che weighed heavily on his mind. Maybe they would be alive if he hadn’t started this company.
I reminded him that if he hadn’t started that helicopter company, hundreds and thousands of lives would have been lost.
Because, you see, he and his brother pioneered the air ambulance helicopter service. They alone retrofitted the first civilian air ambulance helicopter service, with many more to follow. You might recognize the name on many of the helicopters at hospitals throughout the United States. The air ambulance service they created is called “Life Flight.”
When I reminded him of this, he relaxed and said, “Ohhh, I guess so.” His spirit was lifted, and we talked for a little while. He shared some old experiences as the sheriff of Moab, Utah. Then I had to go and hug him (my grandpa was a man’s man, a leader, an innovator, an entrepreneur, a man who, for others, could come off as very intimidating), but at that moment, he had tears in his eyes and said: “I love ya, please drive safe.” I told him the same thing with humor. He got a little kick out of the lame joke. I said goodbye and drove back south to California…he passed away two days later. Love you, Grandpa.
I’ve never been able to talk about this, so I appreciate you making it through this. Tragedies do happen, and loved ones pass away without any warning. Be sure to keep your family and friends close always. Be sure to let the ones you love know how much they mean to you. Encourage storytelling with all of them. There are gems of experiences you may never have heard of. Because within moments, they could be gone.
I hope that all the others who were also involved and affected by the Twilight Zone tragedy have found peace and comfort in the company of their loved ones. That goes for you, too, whoever reads this. 🙏🏼✨

I was eighteen years old when this happened, I learned about it the following day through a local newspaper.
I did not know who Vic Morrow was, only his beautiful daughter Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fast Times At Ridgemont High”).
Despite this tragic incident that took three lives, remember the other senseless deaths in Hollywood over the production of a damn movie!
    * A stuntwoman was killed on set while they were filming “A Vampire In Brooklyn”. She fell from a controlled height during filming, but missed the airbag on the ground to catch her.
    * A cameraman was killed on set of the CBS TV show “The Dukes Of Hazzard”. The truck he was in, with the filming equipment on back, lost control and rolled over at a high speed. The cameraman was crushed.
There are several filming deaths directly linked to Hollywood, and a vast majority are not accidents in nature, but pure stupidity and a complete disregard for human life and safety.

at 0:45 you stupidly say that Morrow "starred in the critically acclaimed film THE EXECUTION OF PRIVATE SLOVIK" ... well NO ! That was Martin Sheen ! Dude, a simple search on imbd would have avoided that mistake but I guess it was too much to ask.

Naw, he had all kinds of success after Twilight Zone:
Spies Like Us, Clue, Three Amigos, Coming To America, Beverly Hills Cop 3, etc. He just eventually moved into being a producer rather than a director as most directors do as they get older, focusing on television.
No doubt he directly contributed to those deaths and I'm sure it hangs over him to some degree to this day but he's 73 now...he was never a "Spielberg," mostly focusing on comedies and horror. Just had his day and moved on.
