The guard puller is falling straight backwards which most modern guard pullers don't. In this instance he would fall towards his right, maybe 45 degrees to Tori's line. It would possibly reduce Tori's ability to move to kesa gatame in this fashion. He would need to pass to the other side. Not sure without trying it.
This would make it easier as more weight is planted on the leg, regardless if passed or not, if you hit this off of the guard pull this is an automatic 2 points per IBJJF.

You’re right. Also, I might be wrong but to me it appears Kimura also gives a slight hop with his left leg just after reaping with his right. I think that helps him control his trajectory so he lands more straight down on his opponent. So his opponent hits the ground harder than he expected, then has a man land on his ribs-gotta be distracting.

This isn't to say there aren't ways to pass when someone's pulling to guard but there are much easier options if someone's pulling guard the wrong way.

It seems to be important for this to work that the inner reap (I forget, ko uchi?) sweeps the support leg before the foot is firmly planted in the stomach. Once the foot plants, there is tension between he foot pushing, and the hands pulling, and a sacrifice throw (Tomoe nage) can still be finished. As a defense to a guard pull in bjj, this could work if the guy didn't just throw both feet up.
I agree. This technique looks deceptively easy. It would take a ton of practice to land it in the very short window of time. That being said, I hate guard pullers, so I got to get training on this!
Pulling guard is when people do not have takedown skills, or do not feel confident to attempt a takedown on their opponent in a match or a fight. The only good reasons for pulling guard are: -to learn the flying triangle choke (which can be a dangerous move) -to learn the flying armbar (which can be a dangerous move) -to work on your guard in class when your teacher ordered you to roll starting from the kneeling position If I was pitted against an opponent in a tournament and did not feel confident to attempt a takedown because of his superior throwing or takedown abilities, one thing I would do is squat down really low like a sumo wrestler. (Semi-dirty "trick")
Am I blind? From what I could see the guard puller completely failed getting his heels attached to the hip. When people pull guard on me they’re certain to connect their feet before their ass hits the mat
Guard pulling is a cancer on grappling and I support any technique to stop it. This is a neat version of a flyover pass, but most guard pullers actually "pull" guard, they dont jump open guard like uke did in this video. It's never how it's taught but some do jump guard and when they do, they close their guard right away and count on the mat for a soft landing. When someone decides to start on the ground instead of standing this pass could work for sure.
I do jiu-jitsu but I never willingly pull guard. I train with the mindset that I always want to remain standing while my opponent is on the ground. If I do utilize guard, it's because I was brought to the ground against my will. I also always put an emphasis on standing up where possible/regaining top position. I think if practical defense is the goal for anyone, they have to play this way instead. What do you think though?
I practice BJJ . If you're relying on the mat for a soft landing you're jumping guard incorrectly. This dude looks like he's going for an overhead sweep. Pulling guard is fast btw. That's how you're supposed to pull guard.
Yeah we sometimes see the flyover pass but not normally when someone poulls guard because they dont pull guard like uke in the video did. They either jump guard and close their legs right away or actually "pull" guard by breaking their opponents posture first. People dont normally pull open guard.
Majora people will pull guard like that but there are some that will just jump up pop up simultaneously so there is no way to pull off that move... he is a master
Chadi's RUclips channel provides excellent videos, discussions and breakdowns. He remains neutral while searching for the best possibilities for grappling. THANK YOU, CHADI.
You won't make many friends in a BJJ class passing the guards like this. The guy doesn't land on the mat,he lands on your face. Don't pull guard like the dude in the video. Kimura is standing tall with total mobility of his hip. First break his posture with a sleeve and lapel grip, one foot pushing the hip vigorlously,.If you control his upper body like this,it will be very difficult for him to execute the reap and if he tries to jump on you,he will fall inside your guard. So before you pull guard, break his posture and get him out of balance.
You sure this isn’t an intended counter to Tomoe Nage? Rather looks like it.. does it actually say anywhere this is a counter to a guard pull technique which is not really taught in Judo?
You shouldn’t pull guard like that right? That’s a beginner mistake to pull guard like this. The guard puller uses the wrong leg on the hip. You normally put the foot on the hip the same side as the hand grabbing the sleeve(not the collar grip side). Otherwise you’re open to pass counters such as this and leg drags.
Kimura destroyed Helio Gracie tore his shoulder to pieces. Tossed Gracie around like a rag doll. Kimura was the best of Japans Judoka. Both in Kodokan and Kosen Judo. Also trained with Mas Obama learning Karate from his friend the Legend Otsu

I heard he learned catch wresting as well. I believe it was the late Billy Robinson spoke about it.
wow... pretty cool, damn
Was the caucasian in that last clip legendary Canadian Douglas Rogers?
Looks awesome! Thanks for sharing this! One concern though, what if the opponent was going for a Tomoe Nage? I think in that case, this could be risky...
You’ll feel it coming, a cartwheel ride is better
I thought it's sacrifice throw. Kimura hook his leg to opponent leg to stop the momentum.
A ÉPOCA DO CONFROTO HÉLIO E MASAHIKO AINDA NÃO TINHA ESSA TÉCNICA TÃO É QUE ELE NÃO USOU ESSA SUPOSTA HABILIDADE EMBORA VENCEU,MAS É UMA BOA TÉCNICA VOU TREINAR ☻🥋😄😂🤣😛😋😅👊🏿👍🏿🇧🇷👏🏿🙏🏿🥊🥊😎
Essa tinha des dos samurais
It seems to be important for this to work that the inner reap (I forget, ko uchi?) sweeps the support leg before the foot is firmly planted in the stomach. Once the foot plants, there is tension between he foot pushing, and the hands pulling, and a sacrifice throw (Tomoe nage) can still be finished. As a defense to a guard pull in bjj, this could work if the guy didn't just throw both feet up.
I think that was major reap, o uchi gari
I agree. This technique looks deceptively easy. It would take a ton of practice to land it in the very short window of time. That being said, I hate guard pullers, so I got to get training on this!
You can’t even see it; it’s so subtle and before you know it you’re in scarf
So simple 😂 Im testing this!
Great counter
Excelent
Was this Kimura that gave the name to the BJJ move 'kimura'? the move used to break Helio gracie's arm? :D
Yesh.
BJJ pull guard is abit different since the legs will mount the body in closed guard not sure if Kimura's technique can handle it or not
Beautifully brutal
Masahiko is a gigachad
どうもありがとうございます! Sorry, I meant to right you a thank you note in English but couldn't help it.😊
Pulling guard is when people do not have takedown skills, or do not feel confident to attempt a takedown on their opponent in a match or a fight.
The only good reasons for pulling guard are:
-to learn the flying triangle choke (which can be a dangerous move)
-to learn the flying armbar (which can be a dangerous move)
-to work on your guard in class when your teacher ordered you to roll starting from the kneeling position
If I was pitted against an opponent in a tournament and did not feel confident to attempt a takedown because of his superior throwing or takedown abilities, one thing I would do is squat down really low like a sumo wrestler. (Semi-dirty "trick")
Hi chadi is long time I don't see you vd
I'd be a bit scared to try this, pulling guard like that puts a lot of weight on you and I'd worry for the knee of my supporting leg.
Am I blind? From what I could see the guard puller completely failed getting his heels attached to the hip. When people pull guard on me they’re certain to connect their feet before their ass hits the mat
Does it Work no Gi also ?
I would still like to see the Full 12 minite fight of Helio Gracie vs. Kimura. All the Gracies show is about a one minute
Because it exposed them...
@@IHaveTheSchwartz I agree 👍
That's how you're supposed to pull guard.
he is basically hitting a ouchi gari before the other guy can pull guard ?
With guard pulls being so prevalent in today's so called BJJ, can we see have we seen this technique being used?
Yeah we sometimes see the flyover pass but not normally when someone poulls guard because they dont pull guard like uke in the video did. They either jump guard and close their legs right away or actually "pull" guard by breaking their opponents posture first. People dont normally pull open guard.
Is this applicable in a real roll? It does not seem so to be honest
Thank you for sharing, but I'm concerned you could injure yourself if the opponent tries to jump guard while you attempt to reap the leg. Thoughts?
Majora people will pull guard like that but there are some that will just jump up pop up simultaneously so there is no way to pull off that move... he is a master
Chadi's RUclips channel provides excellent videos, discussions and breakdowns. He remains neutral while searching for the best possibilities for grappling. THANK YOU, CHADI.
Watched it twice.
yes
You won't make many friends in a BJJ class passing the guards like this. The guy doesn't land on the mat,he lands on your face.
Don't pull guard like the dude in the video. Kimura is standing tall with total mobility of his hip. First break his posture with a sleeve and lapel grip, one foot pushing the hip vigorlously,.If you control his upper body like this,it will be very difficult for him to execute the reap and if he tries to jump on you,he will fall inside your guard. So before you pull guard, break his posture and get him out of balance.
Bro had a bad dream about guard pullers and tried to warn us
My favorite part is when uke flails his legs around while stuck in kesa gatame to sell it.
У вас с переводчиком проблема. Все время анонс с дикими ошибками.
You sure this isn’t an intended counter to Tomoe Nage? Rather looks like it.. does it actually say anywhere this is a counter to a guard pull technique which is not really taught in Judo?
Muito bom
You shouldn’t pull guard like that right? That’s a beginner mistake to pull guard like this. The guard puller uses the wrong leg on the hip. You normally put the foot on the hip the same side as the hand grabbing the sleeve(not the collar grip side). Otherwise you’re open to pass counters such as this and leg drags.
0:44 the floor in 9 month 🤰
Almost nobody just "pulls guard". It almost always involves a sacrifice throw submission failure of some sort.
"Don't fight the feeling"
Genius solution for guard pullers... like the Gracies?😅
This is more of a counter to traditional lapel side tomoe nage.
Has anyone actually done this in competition? Looks real easy to have your back taken.
Bruh, landing on a guys face like that is brutal. That’ll learn them not to pull guard on you.
Caraca dá pra usar isso pra se defender de balão no bjj
With no-Gi and some sweat it is way more difficult I think
Whoever makes the subtitles, clearly doesn't know how to time and end them properly. Holy shit.
It’s RUclips
I’d take judo 🥋 over BJJ any day, but that’s just my personal preference
IDK. He seems to land way forward and probably would have been swept in this day and age.
