@@cooliobob1274 thats an incorrect inference. Watch the forged in fire episode with the Inigo Montoya Rapier. The winner of that episode, Ron Hardmann, runs a blacksmith shop called Kilroys Workshop. He is indeed a real blacksmith, as well as the rest of the competitors throughout the seasons.

It did come out looking like wootz! That's cool! That's the closest I've seen anyone get to the pattern in wootz steel without actually making it. That's incredible.
Monkeysrock I would have to agree 100%, Alec Steele is a very talented young man. Woots/crucible steel is the original Damascus which was never made in Damascus lol but I consider any form of a forge welded billet of different steels Damascus and always will. As soon and my new Anyang 88 gets wired up I plan on doing something very similar but hope to finish with a large billet which means I hill have to make a larger forge or add on to the one I have.

@Max Nimmert: welding! take it from me you need it. And skills with temps that will give 3rd degree burns in a matter of seconds. Skills with heavy hammers, metal and wood working skills, get use to power tools, sanding, and leather working. Just to name a few. I my self am a blacksmith with a lot of experience on my belt these are skills you need before you think about being a blacksmith
i know this question was not directed at me but I night be able to help. besides the obvious (forge, anvil, hammer) I'd really consider a good set of metal files. it gives you a tremendous feel for shaping things and it will carry over to when you get power tools.
