Knowing your materials, how to process them, and how to create from a source is hardly without its own efforts and talent forged out of his desire to create. Besides, most militaries have a youngest / eldest age limits. Not everyone is called to take up arms if it isn't necessary to do so.

Yeah, it seemed like a waste of making the metal mesh Damascus in the first place. None of the metal mesh pattern came through in the final project. He just made etched steel that looked like pattern welded steel, but he used mesh for literally no reason. I can't get my brain to understand the incredible amount of work just to cover it up and make it look like something else that it's not. I would have loved to see the mesh etched the way it was.

I am speculating here, but I suspect it might actually be "liquid paper", aka White-Out™. Still though, same method of application as hydrodipping, and indeed a *_brilliant_* idea! _("faux-Damascus" as I called it in another comment haha)_

Watching someone make an actual (full-tang) Damascus steel blade made me feel so much better about modern knife making. Thank you ❤ you should try washing the mesh in an acid before firing in the forge.
That was interesting. It was all pretty much strait forward until you started sprinkling the paint on the top of the bucket.... ok this is new. I can see how the mesh's pattern was too tight to etch well when you started to sand off the oxides. That's a cool way to get a more pronounced pattern. Its not Damascus though. The mesh was made all of the same steel. Damascus is made from layers of different steels, which will etch at different rates, creating the patterns. This is why nothing showed up when it was first etched. Its not Damascus. However, the masking technique to make it look damascus was pretty neat.
You are perfectly right. However, using some acid like in the video ( ferro chloride, hydrocloric acid, and others), you can achieve a damascus like pattern. So in the end you can call it damascus.

With only one kind of metal, I wouldn't think you'd be able to get any sort of natural pattern. The paint masking approach was... interesting :)

Hydro dipping is the process, not the medium, people.

It consumes the oxygen when burnt. Keeps oxidation out of the billet.

When you acid etch a damascus steel blade the harden steel is a darker color than the mild steel
