      @douglasyoung927 День назад +1

      Yeah, it seemed like a waste of making the metal mesh Damascus in the first place. None of the metal mesh pattern came through in the final project. He just made etched steel that looked like pattern welded steel, but he used mesh for literally no reason. I can't get my brain to understand the incredible amount of work just to cover it up and make it look like something else that it's not. I would have loved to see the mesh etched the way it was.

    Watching someone make an actual (full-tang) Damascus steel blade made me feel so much better about modern knife making. Thank you ❤ you should try washing the mesh in an acid before firing in the forge.

    That was interesting. It was all pretty much strait forward until you started sprinkling the paint on the top of the bucket.... ok this is new. I can see how the mesh's pattern was too tight to etch well when you started to sand off the oxides. That's a cool way to get a more pronounced pattern. Thanks again for the cool videos please stay safe sir.

    Its not Damascus though. The mesh was made all of the same steel. Damascus is made from layers of different steels, which will etch at different rates, creating the patterns. This is why nothing showed up when it was first etched. Its not Damascus. However, the masking technique to make it look damascus was pretty neat.

      You are perfectly right. However, using some acid like in the video ( ferro chloride, hydrocloric acid, and others), you can achieve a damascus like pattern.
      So in the end you can call it damascus.

      When you acid etch a damascus steel blade the harden steel is a darker color than the mild steel
