  • In this video, a St John Ambulance trainer shares how to identify signs of fainting and demonstrates what to do if someone has fainted. Fainting is when someone briefly becomes unresponsive, often causing the person fall to the ground. It happens because for a moment there is not enough blood flowing to the brain.

    As someone who's fainted, your hearing gets muffled, and your vision gets clouded by dark spots. Also, it can get really hard to move. I distinctly remember my arm feeling like it was too heavy to move.

      Yes, but my vision goes more white then turns dark, and I feel like I denied reality

      Yep, when it happened to me a few years ago, I was on a crowded bus. It was during finals and I haven't eaten anything properly the last day and was lacking sleep. As a cherry on the top I smoked before hopping on the bus and was starting to get dizzy. Corners of my vision started to become white, as if I was looking through a straw. Wasn't very conscious that I was about to pass out at the time, probably due to lack of sleep factor, I thought it was just a temporary vision trick. I of course fainted a second later.
      While reganing my consciousness, it felt like I was just waking up from a dream. I slowly realised that I am in fact lying on the floor instead of my bed and couldn't figure out what was happening for a few more minutes. After that I always make sure I have enough sleep and food next time I leave the house

      I just call myself a "fainter"...can't even count how many times I fainted, and yea, all the things you wrote are true...it cause me a big problem once, when I just hit my head in the concrete, ever since then I'm trying to be more careful...

    Good to know that the cause of my almost-fainted moment was due to standing for a long time. It happened inside the bus there were no seats so I stood and it was quite crowded, and soon after it was so hard to breathe.

    If someone is about to faint and they know it, and they manage to tell you in good time (because their legs may have stiffened-up, they feel hot suddenly, their hearing has gone distant and their head starts to swim), quickly lay them down on their back and lift their feet/ legs up to about a 45-degree angle i.e. definitely higher than their head. If you hold their legs there it should prevent the person fainting, but it depends how far they've gone towards it. Trust me, it's much better than the old-school approach of sitting down with your head between your knees, although I appreciate that it may not be possible to get someone on the floor quick enough if they are very old or obese. How do I know about this? A surgeon told me, but that wasn't until I'd fainted 30+ times during my lifetime (that is not an exaggeration btw; I've fainted 3 times in the past year alone). Actually, the raised-legs thing is probably a good idea even after someone has fainted, because it will get blood back to the brain quicker. When they start coming round you may want to lower the legs though, so that the person can just lie comfortably. And it's probably best to turn their head to the side or put them into the recovery if feasible, just in case they vomit from shock. You could loosen their clothing (neck ties, top buttons) and take any headwear off too.
    Personally, my own fainting is usually down to 'white coat syndrome' or Googling medical stuff, but for others it can be due to general anxiety about a situation they're in, or excess heat. It's not a bad idea to give the person a drink of water afterwards, but if you know them and/or you're sure that it's not a problem allergy/ intolerence-wise, you could get them a Mars bar or something sweet to eat, just in case the episode was due to a sugar crash. It will likely help to pep them up regardless, however don't try and sit the person up too quickly; they may need five or ten minutes lying still before they feel up to moving. Once they've recovered they should be able to move normally, although they may feel somewhat drained. While someone is fainting it is normal for them to sweat profusely, their eyes may flicker/ roll or even stay open, but they should come out of it enough that they're able to respond and talk to you within a couple of minutes. If they don't, then it could be a fit or something more serious, so you may have to consider medical intervention.

    This morning I was making breakfast with my mom cause I was going to school. I was cutting bread and I accidentally cut my thumb and the cut was big. It was open to my skin and my nail was cut too. My mom rushed me to the bathroom because I was losing too much blood. I was my thumb off with some tepid water and my mom sprayed some peroxide.after that I sat back down and I started to feel dizzy, there was ringing in my ears and my vision was getting a little blurry. I fanned myself to cool me down because I was scared and thought I was gonna die lol. My mom ran out of bandages with is even worse. I tried not to faint but I didn't. Right now I'm laying in my bed not going to school with the cut on my thumb. It's still bleeding a little tiny bit

    You didn’t mention that many people have conditions(such as POTS) that cause them to faint often, sometimes every day. If you see someone who has fainted in a public place, you should first check by looking around to see if someone they know or their service dog is nearby. If they have someone with them who is not concerned, then leave them be. Service dog teams and people in general do not like being stared at, and so if they are not hurt, let them be. AND DON’T TOUCH SERVICE DOGS, EVER!!

    • @cheepydog
      @cheepydog 3 года назад +1

      What if they don’t own any pets

    • @nou898
      @nou898 3 года назад +1

      @@cheepydog Actually, service dogs are *not* pets. They are medical equipment, similar to a wheelchair, breathing tube, or other medical equipment. These service dogs are essential for keeping these people alive, as they give people their independence back. If they have a service dog, it may be lying on them, administering DPT, which is pressure therapy to push the blood back to their heart so they will regain consciousness. If the dog is trying to lead someone to their owner, it is possible the owner is in danger or is hurt.
      There are *many* fake service dogs out there. Emotional support animals, or ESAs, do *not* have the rights to enter public places like real service dogs. Only dogs which have a physical task to perform that benefits their owner because of their condition are real service dogs with real rights.
      Signs of a fake service dog(if you see a dog exhibiting any of these qualities in a store or other place where pets are not allowed, report it to an employee, they are possibly dangerous and breaking the law):
      -aggressive
      -barking
      -does not follow the owner’s commands
      -does not stay at the owner’s heel
      -sniffs everything(some service dogs may accidentally trip up and sniff, however if they are frequently sniffing and looking around, they aren’t paying attention to their owners and clearly aren’t service dogs)
      -looks around and doesn’t pay attention to their owner
      -easily distracted
      If someone faints and they are alone, you can go over and verbally ask if they are okay. Do not touch them, as that is intrusive and a bit too personal. If they don’t respond, fetch an employee and express your concern. The employee can then decide how to check up on the person. Some people with POTS say it feels less intrusive if an employee asks if they are okay rather than a passerby. If they fell and they are clearly injured and unconscious, quickly ask an employee and let them handle it, helping out where you can.

    Yesterday I blacked out! I was going to put clothes in the dryer in my basket, but before I did, my vision went completely black, I was dizzy, and could barely hear anything. When my vision went completely black, I was like “oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh.” I held onto something and I didn’t know what it was. My mom saw that I held onto the dryer door but also I couldn’t see even though my eyes were wide open apparently. My mom said that my face was pale, and I was stiff and trembling. I went to the doctor and she said it’s probably vasovagal syncope. Not now but in the past I would wake up, get out of bed, and I would black out. It’s the scariest thing. Yesterday I was losing balance and I just had no control. I can’t really remember if I was awake when my mom brought me to the couch or if I was back to black vision. Idrk but it was so frightening!

      Please make an appointment with a doctor. Fainting on a regular basis needs attending to by a physician. I have fainted in the past (like every 5 years or so), mostly from being in a heated crowd of people or falling and banging my head. But, fainting regularly indicates something.

    I fainted for the first time yesterday while waiting in line to take my food in a KFC. Before fainting I felt the same dizziness I would feel when I stand up too quickly and stuff but like it was really extreme and I was rubbing my face because I thought it was just a headache and I was wearing headphones so the sounds were already muffled and mind you I was waiting in line for like 30+ minutes because there was like only 2 people working at the time and then suddenly I felt like everything got quiet and all I could see was black and I could feel myself walking backwards and then I fell to the floor and hit my head. It all happened in like a few seconds and then I was awake and I felt like I just woke up and this was all a dream and then I could feel my mom and a random guy holding me by my arms and making me walk to chair and sit down and I was so confused about what just happened because it was my first time fainting and the random guy's daughter came to me and turns out she was a doctor and she was checking if I knew my name, where I was and all those stuff and my mom went to get me some water and a janitor went to go get an ice pack and omg I was so annoyed and fed up because I'm a really big introvert and that was a huge scene that just happened and everybody was just staring at me but I understand why tho and the whole time I was hoping for time to speed up so I can get this over with 🥲🥲

    I fainted while my friend was piercing me.
    I want more piercings and the pain wasn’t that bad.
    Even though I have an extreme fear of needles it was quite easy to do it but when the needle was threw I just couldn’t see or hear anymore, I was as pale as a paper and my eyes where rolling(they told me) but I couldn’t do anything I kinda just wanted everything to be over, the buzzing in my ears, that everything wouldn’t be blurry anymore and I could just think clearly again but after I ran(stumbled) to the bathroom and puked I felt better already and even the that was a horrible experience I really wanna get another piercing so if anyone has any tips that would be great (I don’t really care about the pain I’m just afraid of needles-aka I’d rather be stabbed to death then get a flew shot)

    • @orionspants

      i get this with needles; it can be from anxiety, but in my case relaxing before a shot is a bad thing because it lowers my blood pressure; combined with getting the shot it makes me faint. a tip is to tense all your muscles and drink something sugary afterwards.

    Wouldn't that subject the person to "swallow their tongue"? Also, why during other incidents such as in MMA sports, they advice to lay the person on their side, what's the difference?
    Also, what if someone fainted due to low blood pressure, and you weren't able to hold them up and was forced to have them lie down on ground, what action should be taken?
    Appreciate some professional advice from someone. Thanks

    • @justsayin5048
      @justsayin5048 3 года назад

      It’s impossible to swallow your tongue, that’s a myth. Think about when you’re sleeping. If someone is fainting/having a seizure you shouldn’t touch their mouth or anything like that. I have never heard of lifting the legs though, it seems a bit weird. Laying on your back naturally opens up the airways just in case but rolling someone onto their side can also relieve pressure off their lungs and other organs. Just make sure their head doesn’t hit the ground, and lay it on something such as a folded towel, folded jacket, or a pillow.

    • @justsayin5048

      I’m not a professional btw, but I do watch a lot of these videos lol.

    • @MamaKat92

      @@justsayin5048 Elevating the legs actually helps return blood to the torso and can aid in waking up and returning blood pressure to normal. Massaging them also helps circulation a lot. You are correct that you can’t “swallow” your tongue, however fainting is different than being asleep and your tongue can relax back and block your throat, so it’s often recommended to turn the unconscious person’s head to the side.
      -I have multiple diagnosed “fainting” conditions (POTS, orthostatic hypotension, general hypotension, and vasovagal syncope)
      Edited to add: turning the head to the side or placing the person in the “recovery position” also prevents them from choking if they begin to vomit, as nausea and vomiting are also common with faints or syncope episodes.
