People underestimate canoes as sailing vessels. Efficient to windward, great gear hauler, and can go many places other boats can't go. Love this episode. Good job Simon
jibing in a canoe is impressive enough for anyone who doesn't know what that means, good skills to stop that canoe from having water over the thwart. fair play.

I was scooting in my seat and leaning with yeah!!! 😃what fun!! great meal, wow! what a thrip!!! can't thank you enough best Thursday ever Simon!!! im a huge supporter of you and the Alzheimer's Association !!! cant wait for that trip!!! Can I just say a massive thank you to all of you who have donated so far. We have just reached £1000 for the charity which is absolutely amazing. Simon, you have a fantastic subscriber base mate.
Everyone in the bush craft community: how can I shave 2g off my titanium stove set up Simon: I'm going to make the Gypsy Moth of canoes and sail the world. Next week watch me make an outboard motor from pine cones :) Seriously, one of the best You Tubers out there. Everything you make and share is of incredible quality. I've learned so much from you, so thank you from SW France.
Lovely video. What a life you've 'carved out' for yourself. Keep up the great work. I'm always reminded of the famous Wind in the Willows quote when I see something like your setup. What the Water Rat said to the Mole: “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing-absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

Simon want a wonderful video and you sir are not just craftsmen you are a craftsman of the first class!!! All of your work reflects the devotion you put into your works!!! CHEERS MATE FROM TENNESSEE
Excellent set up and looked like a stellar day out on the water! Looks like you were making some impressive speed there too. Even had a decent bow wave going there! Of course you know you'll now have to start talking like a pirate, (Yaaaarrrrrr!), and start using your canoe barrel to carry your rum ration, ("Up Spirits, Splice the Mainbrace!") I'm thinking you could also rig some sort of a gun deck as well, a couple of 2 pounders or a couple of potato guns should make for an impressive broadside! Fair winds and following seas, Seaman....er....Simon and long may your big jib draw! - Darby, Nova Scotia 🇨🇦
Fantastic to have you on board Simon and once again thank you. The trip is going to be tough but so for filling and so much fun! We have a fantastic team now you have joined us mate. Anyway, I need to talking about this new speed boat you have 🤣... How fast is she now! Lol you really were blasting through the Broads dude. To think you haven’t sailed in 30 years you really did a top notch job pal. The rudder made turning so much easier than having to swap out the sail to the other side and having to hold the paddle in the front and back position. A treat to watch. The stew too 🤤, a hearty lunch for a speed boat pilot 😀. A very enjoyable video, thanks pal 👍
The way that relatively small sail whips you through the water really shows what an efficient hull shape canoes have. And, come to think of it, the old viking long boats had much the same hull shape, and they were noted for their speed and sea-worthiness. Nice job, Simon - and it looks enormous fun!
Being a sailor that was your best video yet. Your canoe sails beautifully and looked fast upwind too, which surprised me. Keep the videos coming because I love your channel!
Sailing upwind looked good , I'm making a grabclaw sail for my canoe , already made a model for a scale down version . I sailed my 19 foot sailboat with a reefable grabclaw , I went upwind good in very rough weather crossing from florida to bahamas , no engine and waterballasted .
Well done Sir. I’m no sailor but I have rigged aluminum poles and old bed sheets to do some canoe sailing in my younger day. Definitely gets the adrenaline pumping when a nice gust of wind fills the sail! I never could figure out how to move forward against the wind... I never knew about a “lee board” though. That was a fun video to watch!👍🏻
As someone who loves bushcraft, loves your videos and loves sailing, this was my fav vid of the week on RUclips. beautifully handled, some great SOW. what a fab little conversion kit, not too many sheets and fastenings to worry about to get a fully working sailing rig. brilliant!
A wonderful cause to raise awareness and money for. My husband suffers from Alzheimer's and Dementia and had to recently be placed in a nursing home after my caring for him for the last 20 years. It is devastating to lose my best friend to this disease. Well done Ant
This made me giggle when you were sailing your little boat. What a great ingenious kit you’ve made for yourself Simon. You looked so chuffed and happy when you were zooming along and comical with the music in background! Love these boating videos the best and can watch for hours. Many thanks from East Yorkshire x
MAN O MAN !!! you were whippin’ right along. That was real speed for a canoe...and not a paddle stroke in the water!!! I’ve been waiting so long, hoping you’d sail and you did. Now, of all the stuff you do, you’re a sailor too. That rig is just right for those big broads you like. You may even want to explore other big waters too. Well done, Simon!!! South east Texas has some good sailing too. You’d love it. Texas Happy Father’s Day, you don’t mind me watching your videos multiple times…over the years? It’s 16 Jun 2024 and enjoyed this video again. Thanks again. I’ve moved to the Little River, just down river from the Smoky Mountains, my forever retirement home.
I was amazed by the sense of smooth progress the canoe made under sail. Watching the boom come around a time or two, I thought you might have worn a hard helmet rather than your trademark beanie. All the Best!
As someone who is originally from Edinburgh now living on the edge of the Cotswolds. I've done the Great Glen trip twice from Inverness to Fort William by motor cruiser. Stunning places along the route and you get to say hello to Nessie ! Don't forget Simon, there's no key in lock it's LOCH !! Great video and cracking sausage stew !! Cheers 👌
Thanks Simon, I've shared to Facebook and hope it gets you a few , my mother-in-law had it and I helped my father-in-law nearly everyday. She went on nearly 16 yrs. Was sad and really hurt him but he kept her at home the whole time. I was there the night she finally passed. Good luck young man and bless you and your friend both.🙏🙏
I could give you a hundred tips on how to dial in your rig, but instead I’m just going to say... Fantastic job!!!! Well done, mate! You got the bug again, now. Your life is changed forever, I’m super happy for you!!!
The funniest line ‘I let a bit of sheet out’!! You don’t say!! I bet you did tipping over to the gunwales! Seriously though, what a great bit of kit, masterfully handled too. Maybe a couple of quick release cleats are needed to hold the boom on either tac for you? Off to donate for your trip now. Thanks Simon. Paul.
Hi Simon☺ you were fail zipping along under sail, I was quite surprised how stable it looked from where I am, I guess you had a moment or two, it was impressive though, and the spot you had lunch looked ideal, a bit swallows and amazons, lol, one of my favourite films, I whish you and the gang all the best for your Scottish adventure, that will make great viewing, thanks for the video, stay safe mate, best wishe's to all, Stuart uk.
Absolutely awesome Simon. Your grin said it all. Oh and love the inflatable torpedo tubes 😉😄 seriously though, the canoe certainly got a fair rate of knots on once the sail was deployed.
Mate this is awesome, I can't believe how well it did in the wind - especially upwind, it looks so efficient as it cuts through the water... and the tacking is so quick too...!! Awesome job man! Happily donated to the cause :-)
This is a grand film of your canoe's maiden voyage as a sailing craft! It particularly resonated with me because I'm now in the final building stage of my own cedar-strip canoe and have been wanting to try out a sailing rig for a long time. You've convinced me to 'go for it'! I also liked your Kelly Kettle cooking arrangement; I could almost taste the stew! And finally, what a worthy object for fundraising during the August canoeing event in Scotland. Can other canoeists join in as participants?
Very good results! A turning block(pulley) on the thwart in front of you would be a big bonus for main sheet handling. A ratchet block that is selectable would be ideal. Especially for any longer distance sail.
"Heave to", "prepare to mainsail haul", "come back on those halyards", "idlers and waisters to the rail", "pipe the hands to dinner", "off tacks and sheets", "helm a-lee"..ha ha ha, fitting as I just started the eleventh book of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels. Simon, you are a fine coxswain!
Great video Simon, you were really ramping on the speed, Your going to have plenty of fun on the Scotland trip, and remember, when your out on the lochs, it dont matter how hot the day is, those waters are blooming cold! wear your dry suit!, and be careful of the seals in Loch Linnhe they can be quite playful. Youd better fit a tow bar for the next time you go out with Kent Survival, poor lad will be a speck on the horizon in no time at all once you put that sail up.
As always Simon your videos are awesome! Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. Where did you find your wooden spoon at? That is the sweetest spoon I’ve seen.
Simon will be changing his name now to Simon, a Bloke on the Water 💦 So many happy memories of shooting the bridge at Potter Higham and sailing the Broads! Thanks for another great video !!

Just watching this again as I was so impressed with your sailing rig I decided to buy one. I really did chuckle when you slipped the hat off and on again when putting the dry top on. So funny. But the sailing was superb. Just goes to show that once you've learnt how to sail it never leaves you.
Simon you are genius.could have enjoyed with a bottle if wine for sucess.as we waiting for the august trip..u got be nice guy to do such kind of generous help towards a need.👍👍👍👍
Dude u was hauling a-- !!! She slapping the waves that's for sure !!! 😄😃👍🏽 And after all the hard paddling you have done a good stew is exactly what you need 😄😅😆🙂😋
Hi Simon, great video as always, some speed in that canoe, Great to hear your coming up to my neck of the woods, I'm half way up Loch ness, In August I suggest you bring Midge repellent (Avon skin so soft) seems to work the best :-)
Yes I have the Avon stuff as heard the SAS use it. Not sold as insect repellent. Make sure you put it on skin or something washable though; I sprayed it on a wooden fan and it stinks now!
Sir, brilliant. Looks terrifying to me but it’s brilliant! Thank you for the cooking, you know I enjoy that, I’ve never bothered with the additions to my Kelly’s Kettles, but I might now, it looks really good. As to your trip, wave at J27 on the M6! My dad, the most amazing man I’ve ever known, physicist and innovative educator, died from dementia a few years ago. A harrowing and cruel death for the loveliest man you could ever wish to meet. Stand by for a donation coming your way and thank you for your efforts for a worthy cause.
Nice looking stew. Just needed some Beurre manié (butter & flour mix) that could be made at home and held in a butter dish,. Add a dollop and stir in to thicken until you have the consistency/gravy thickness you desire.
AWESOME!!! Good job!! Congratulations captain. Looked like fun but way to fast and to much work for ME. I'm just a "drifter" enjoy the ride!!! Make a good bug out vessel...lol. lunch looked amazing. Love stews...your freinds are going to need outboard motors to keep up with you. Lol
Awesome Simon. The big grin on your face said it all! Congrats on such a successful venture, and I WISH I could cook as well as you-even in my kitchen!!
You are going to love the Scotland trip, we did it (in a motor boat) about 7years ago now, Loch Ness is massive! Vistas are stunning! It would awesome to do it in a canoe, wildcamping along the way, enjoy.
Brilliant stuff. Doing The Great Glen for charity is great. Just remember to stop that canoe/torpedo in Inverness or you'll end up in Shetland. Mind you Shetland is nice that time if year. 🤣👍🔥
Looked like you were having a lot of fun! Sailing is not really something that I’m interested in though it was fun to watch this one time. I love that you cook real food in each of your videos rather than relying on ration packs or processed foods. Nicely done, Simon!
I saw the “Kelly Kettle ‘oooh’” as you put it onto the fire base. Surprising how hot that chimney output is, even when you don’t think that it’s burning much.
Great video again,I've followed u for a very long time,ur a top bloke,I have health conditions, and your videos really cheer people like me up,all your videos r brilliant and very relaxing, and at the moment, that's just what the doctor ordered, thanks mate, take care....
Great video Simon (bloke in the woods) now Captain Pugwash😂... only joking . It was great to see your hard work and great craftsmanship all work out so brilliantly , I bet it has got a fair few looking at what Solway Dory has to offer. well done mate 👍. cheers Ian
I’ve never seen anyone smile so much. You were like a kid in a sweet shop. That really did look like so much fun and you were certainly motoring along 😊😊. Really looking forward to seeing your Scotland trip. I’ll certainly be donating some money. I have clients with Alzheimer’s and my grandmother had Alzheimer’s. great video, enjoyed every second. 👍👍👍
Great video and demo of canoe sailing. Really inspiring and informative and very practical. Also well done for bringing your own tinder and fuel. Lots of people think that burning dead wood or cones doesn't do any harm but it's always worth remembering that dead stuff provides habitat for other living things and so increase or maintains biodiversity. Also, unlike the person who left the evidence of a previous fire, your kettle is very low impact if used carefully.
I've only just come across this. Oh my goodness I am so impressed by this set up. In the past I've tried a bit of sailing on different boats. The last time was on a dinghy. With my very bad arthritic knees, by then, it was absolutely impossible, avoiding the boom, crawling across the deck when tacking. Even in a big yacht, which I wasn't sailing, we had to jump from one seat to the other. I'm even more crocked now (and old). But look at you - sitting easy whilst the sail swings across. Wow. I wish I'd known about that before now.
People underestimate canoes as sailing vessels. Efficient to windward, great gear hauler, and can go many places other boats can't go. Love this episode. Good job Simon
I too am a sailor, loved this video!

Simon; *changes into dry top*
Me; "sh*t, we'll get to see him without a hat on! "
Simon; haha, no chance 😂
He has hair! Who knew!
You can see him without a hat on a couple of Andy’s videos
Haha I watched it twice and thought the same bloody thing haha I've been thing he's always got a hat on for a while now
That's not a hat... it is in reality, his real head!

Your rig is SO stable. I have an 18' Old Town & it seems VERY tippy. Took notes on your boat. Thank you for sharing.
Great fun. This is what we dreamed of doing as kids. But the rig and canoe were financially out of our reach. A big thank you, Simon.

You are going to love the Scotland trip, we did it (in a motor boat) about 7years ago now, Loch Ness is massive! Vistas are stunning! It would awesome to do it in a canoe, wildcamping along the way, enjoy.
Water to Port...Andy will look good in yellow wellies with a pink gin. Amazing rig Simon. Best vid ever.
I’d say you were pretty much flying across that water!! How amazing!♥️ It looks so great too...I love it. ⛵️
Brilliant stuff. Doing The Great Glen for charity is great. Just remember to stop that canoe/torpedo in Inverness or you'll end up in Shetland. Mind you Shetland is nice that time if year. 🤣👍🔥
He’ll certainly be getting the brews on for us all as he will be at camp before us mate 😂
Hahaha - little lap of Shetland and back in time to get the kettle on for the rest of the lads! 🤣🤣
Looked like you were having a lot of fun! Sailing is not really something that I’m interested in though it was fun to watch this one time. I love that you cook real food in each of your videos rather than relying on ration packs or processed foods. Nicely done, Simon!
You've still got the sailing skills - what a ride! Nice one Simon, atb
Simon, a bloke in the wind! Looked like great fun!
Great video Simon (bloke in the woods) now Captain Pugwash😂... only joking . It was great to see your hard work and great craftsmanship all work out so brilliantly , I bet it has got a fair few looking at what Solway Dory has to offer. well done mate 👍. cheers Ian
Hahaha the way you put that hat back on and the laugh that followed. Really enjoy your videos!
Thank you , Simon .
🐺 Loupis Canis .
Oh Simon, I enjoyed our his video tremendously! And I did envy you just a little... 😉
Nice Rig. Just remember, "When in doubt, let it out!" The main sheet. You're less likely to dunk in the drink that way. Advice from an over 70 sailor.
The old girl has never gone so fast speeeeeeed👍👍👍👍
I’ve never seen anyone smile so much. You were like a kid in a sweet shop. That really did look like so much fun and you were certainly motoring along 😊😊. Really looking forward to seeing your Scotland trip. I’ll certainly be donating some money. I have clients with Alzheimer’s and my grandmother had Alzheimer’s. great video, enjoyed every second. 👍👍👍
Thank you Dan!! 👍👍👍
It was superb fun! 😀
Look at you go!!!!!! Wooohoooo! Great video Simon, as usual! Cheers!
Great stuff Simon, blessings from New Zealand 🇳🇿 🙌 🙏 👏 😀
Always look forward to more videos 📹
God bless my friend.
That works great, got to be happy with that! Have a great trip.
Welcome to the canoe sailing darkside! I have a Solway-Dory Shearwater and love her dearly :)
Yet again, a lovley video Simon thank you, just the sound of nature and being on the broads is enough to take one's self away from reality for a day.
Simon, You, sir, are a total badass!
wow simon thats working pretty dam good
Good on you Simon! nothing like a sail on cold day! Man she shuffels right along
Looking forward to seeing your adventures on the Scottish trip, Simon, the scenery is something else up there.
Grinning like a Cheshire cat...hehe, that looked like great fun!
It looked like you were belting along. And you stayed dry so it’s a win-win. 👍😄
Enjoyed the video, sailing was cool, meal time with Simon is always interesting. Get some great ideas from you for camp meals. Thanks for the videos.
That is amasing Simon! When you set out with the sail I got a big childish smile on my face! Looks wonderful and like tons of fun! :D
Smartly done. You had that canoe nearly flying.
