  • Fed up with the lack of power my 2018 Ford Raptor was making, I decided it was time to give COBB Tuning a try. Their upgraded Stage 2 Kit solved lots of the issues I had with this truck. Everything from improving the exhaust notes to eliminating that dreaded pedal lag. This kit is well worth the investment, adding another 100 horsepower to the engine and making it feel as awesome as it looks.

    100% correct that these trucks need a tune. I was massively underwhelmed by my Gen 2 when I picked it up. Sadly I traded my 2013 Roush Raptor that was heavily tuned for it, and kind of regret it.
    That said, this truck takes to tunes far better and is way more capable than the Gen 1 when it comes to off road ability, and off road durability. The Gen 1 definitely lacked in that area.

      So glad hearing you say that. It’s difficult to get an honest opinion out there when there’s so much pride of ownership clouding people’s assessment of their truck.

      In a 6000lb truck with 35s But really it’s the turbo lag that makes it feel sluggish, the truck has NO roll on power it’s a light switch

      Own one and you’ll discover that trying to offroad this thing ain’t all that. Factory Suspension is junk and yes, it’s under powered. Lot of pedal and turbo lag. Both easily fixed with a small investment which is my point, should’ve come better tuned from the factory. Numbers don’t matter if it’s not getting the job done and keep in mind, the factory 450hp isn’t at the wheel.

      @KidRichmond  5 лет назад +2

      The Cappy COBB should have their Accessport tune for the 19 coming out in the next couple months. You could always drop their larger intercooler in it for some gains. Won’t void your warranty and you’ll have some cooler charge temps.

    I really like your content! Very enticing video editing, I was having some trouble with the audio that was a little distracting though. It sounded like during the city shots you may have had an underlying track playing over the louder track that cuts in? Maybe I'm wrong but that's what it sounded like. I was only getting audio out of my left ear during your talk in the car that starts @8:00, also had a pretty good echo effect going on. Last thing that I and many others would agree on would be to cut out the audio on exhaust notes so we can hear it clearly, especially if you are trying to isolate the sound after installing a mod. Other than that, good stuff! Look forward to more Raptor content :)

    • @KidRichmond
      @KidRichmond  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you for the words. Yes the audio definitely has some issues. I switched from Adobe premiere to Final Cut half way through editing and somehow have a ghost track in there. Also, I think you're spot on with only hearing one channel. I picked up a new Rode VMP+ in hopes to capture better audio but I think I'll have to read the manual thoroughly for the next vlog. Currently editing that now, going to showcase the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid!!!

      Kid Richmond not very expensive and great sounding, hoping it will sound better with this stage 2 kit (yea I’m probably gonna end up getting it for the low end gains) I also agree a tune is 100% necessary. 450hp is a lot of horsepower but the throttle response isn’t really where you want it and really want to get some of those low end gains

    Wonderful video and thank you for the tips! Any thoughts on running E85, as well as what would need to be done to have a reliable setup on flexfuel and E85? I’m really considering doing this, I’m just afraid of dealers being able to see that the stock map hasn’t been in use before coming in for service and just has been reflashed the day before . From some of the information I’ve gathered over the years with tunes and warranty claims, is that if a significant problem pertains (I.e. new engine, new trans, ect) the dealers can see when the last time the base parameters were running. So I’m sure they can put two things together and realize the car has had some sort of tune over a period of time where the ecu was not functioning at stock parameters. I know It’s a nightmare scenario but I’d rather be safe than sorry, any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you once again for your wonderful video, you have earned yourself a subscriber, keep up the good content!

    • @KidRichmond
      @KidRichmond  5 лет назад +2

      Christian Menger thank you for the compliments and yes that’s a rather hot topic with regards to warranty.
      Here’s the deal on that, legally, a dealer can’t void a warranty due to tubes, parts install/ modifications etc unless they can prove unequivocally that said mods are directly responsible for the incurred part failure. But here’s the deal with that; even though you as a consumer are protected by the Moss-Magnusson warranty act, it doesn’t mean that some dealerships won’t give you a hard time.
      Now with that said, it’s why I’ll only run parts and tunes from highly respected and reputable companies such as COBB Tuning. They’re a huge company and put a ton of work into product R&D.
      I’m not sure what’s required for E85/ flexfuel setup. I think the COBB is already programmed for E85 but I’ll double check and follow up.

      Kid Richmond Thank you so much for the input, and getting back to me so fast. I will have to find a dealer that won’t try to flag me for mods , and won’t give me hard time for modding. Can’t wait to see more raptor content ! :)

    I just picked up a 2019 raptor and I'm enamoured with this truck. I think the power is awesome in stock form and can't imagine what Cobb feels like. I had a GD7 Impreza STi with Cobb Stage 2, so I know what Cobb is capable of. Just not sure if I want to bust the warranty on a 90k truck just yet. We'll see.

I was checking into the parts list you’ve supplied and when I check the manufacture’s web site, I’m having difficulty narrowing down what parts you’ve actually gotten. Would you be able to supply more specific information on those parts, please? Additionally, would you be able to post what the truck sounds like outside the vehicle? Thanks!

    Just got a 2019 raptor and goes alright depends what your used to, gas mpg not good my friends 400hp dodge gets 26-28. And those who say you don't buy a Raptor for mpg are either rich or serious off roaders. If I'am going to get bad mpg than it better GO. Thats why I'am here debating Cobb vs Whipple. Problem is neither give you the best in a kit it's ok but not best. So I got a CP-E Monster intercooler and the AFE duel filter air intake I believe thats better, now it's up to whos the best TUNER, the Cobb looks good can you adjust top speed I mean 108 mph that's a joke. Have you tried a perfor. blow off valve is it worth it? Havn't bought anything yet but will in next 2 weeks feedback would be helpfull thanks.

    • @KidRichmond
      @KidRichmond  4 года назад

      I never worry about gas mileage. Guess I’m a bit of both of what you describe but I do agree, for being a V6 “ECO” boost, I did expect it to get better than 14mpg on average. Our Porsches have twin turbo V8s and twin turbo V6s, make anywhere between 450-550 HP and get waaaay better mileage. I know these are lighter vehicles but a prime example is the 2020 Cayenne that weighs around 5000lbs 550 hp and I get around 19 on average with my foot in it all the time.
      For which tuner to chose I think it really comes down to what you’re expected levels conveniences/ inconveniences are. By that I mean, COBB has the best off the shelf tune, works with a Mac, has a really slick interface and won’t give you any fuss and the hardware looks good. I’ve used other tuners as well like through the Ngauge which looks extremely cheap and hated everything except the actual tune that was built custom for me. Plus you have to do the whole email back and forth with your tuner, give them time to get it dialed in, they pass back a file built off your stock file and so on. I don’t like this approach for one simple reason, i got shit to do. I just want to jump in the truck, set it and forget it.
      I do have a freshly rebuilt turbo smart BOV sitting here in the box if you’re interested. It’s what I ran with the COBB setup and had it reroutes back to the airbox. No gains made but I felt better about running the turbo smart bov than the plastic that Ford sends with the truck.

    • @KidRichmond
      @KidRichmond  4 года назад

      Nope, not one of those MPG people but for a 70k truck it feels dead in the water. Sure, it’s still a truck but doesn’t mean we shouldn’t expect more when paying a premium. When I make my assessments I don’t compare to what is currently the fastest, I compare to what could’ve been done and who did it. Your method requires everyone to lower their standards. My methods ask consumers to expect more and encourages innovation.

    Does this void the warranty

    • @KidRichmond
      @KidRichmond  4 года назад +1

      Guillermo Faria yes and no. With the Moss Magnuson warranty act, the burden of proof that the parts caused damage should anything break resides on the dealer. Let’s say you install the intercooler and forget to tighten up a clamp and the turbos ingest dirt then the bearings go out, that would potentially void it because the dealer can say those are the points of failure. That’s why you want to make sure everything is properly installed. As for the tune, that’s something the dealer would have to prove caused engine failure and if you remove it prior to having it serviced or repaired then they can only know you had it installed if you tell them. Sounds sort of deceitful but you have to remember dealers love to blame anything. They’ll try to blame a paint job for an axle breaking if you let them. COBB engineers their products and tunes to meet very high and rigorous standards. This tune plus intercooler really opens up the motor so it feels punchy.

  • @jpdienst
    @jpdienst 4 года назад +1

    Lot’s of talk about being underpowered from the factory when the ‘17 runs a 13.9 seconds at 97.3 mph in the quarter. It was also featured in motor trends “12 Quickest Pickup Trucks“. Your explanation of pleasing or “good” exhaust tones is just incorrect. Horsepower alone simply does not correlate to pleasant exhaust tones. Plenty of applications with far less power than the Raptor have had aggressive and pleasing exhaust notes (take a 90s LT1 F-Body for example). I also would have appreciated some before and after ETs, or at least some Dyno results to substantiate your findings instead of the girlfriend and gun bit. Excellent quality and production on the video though.

    • @KidRichmond
      @KidRichmond  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the underhanded compliment. I’ll keep my girl and gun in the future bits before dyno pulls though.
      The biggest issue with me saying the truck is underpowered is not that there’s a lot of talk about it, the real issue is the way people spout off 1/4 mile times as if it translates to a trucks performance abilities offroad. The even bigger issue is the fanboy base this truck has amassed and how those people who don’t even own, or have ever driven the truck, talk so highly about it.
      A new Ram can run the 1/4 mile in 14.7 seconds. So saying the Raptor can do it in 14 isn’t saying much and that’s another reason why I don’t talk track times. In the desert you don’t go into launch mode unless you want to dig ruts and create dust clouds. So that’s a rather useless statistic and one you won’t see published on XTV brand sites because in real world usage those specs mean nothing unless you’re goal is to have the fastest stoplight to stoplight times in front of the local Dairy Queen.
      And yes, more horsepower pumping through the same matrix of stainless will create different exhaust notes, thats just a fact.

    • @jpdienst
      @jpdienst 4 года назад +1

      @Kid Richmond Its your channel bro, you can do whatever you please. I came looking for facts and empirical results about a specific tune and got a lot opinions and subjective claims. I also never stated a change in horse power wouldn't create different tonal characteristics of the exhaust note, I just refuted that there is a one to one correlation that more power is what makes a vehicle sound "better", as you implied in your video. There is a lot factors that account for an appealing exhaust tone(flow, pressure, runner lengths, firing order, materials, etc). Anyways, just giving honest feedback, and not intending to offend you. Keep on trucking.

    Maybe your truck had a issue bc I got 2 and they are fast my 2017 runs 0-60 in 4.9 and my 2019 with only 14K on the odemeter is running it in 5.2 not Porsche fast but maybe that’s why I don’t drive the type of cars u do maybe my sense of speed would change. Or maybe being in Utah just at elevation even with turbos it’s slower either way glad u enjoying the truck now

      I understand what you’re saying and yes speed can also be very subjective but I drive a lot of trucks and the raptor doesn’t feel impressive, especially or the price. To compare, a 19 Ram can run 0-60 in 6.1 miles. Until you get into the 4s you won’t really start to feel a big difference. So whether it’s 5.9 or 6.1 or even 5, it all feels relatively the same.
      Ford really messed up putting an ecoboost in such a beautiful truck. But they messed up even more by going with a leaf-over-axle rear instead of a coil suspension. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping the 2022 Raptor has coils and a supercharged V8 option. But I’ll likely be in a TRX

      Kid Richmond there is a coil spring raptor coming you’ll have the option of leaf or coil spring it’s all over the internet they have seen it out testing multiple times a few even caught it parked while the driver was away and got actual pictures of the coil spring suspension so don’t worry lol.

      Richard Mahoney I’ve seen that. My buddy got to ride with the engineers but the worry is they’ll scrap it with the current direction of the economy. I think Ford going to coil speaks volumes to their indirect admission of short comings on the gen 2. Really loving what Ram has done lately though so we’ll have to see who can deliver first.

    Hey Kid, do you know any coupon code for Cobb tuning?

    • @KidRichmond

      Francisco Rios Ceuppens I sure don’t but that’s something I’ll ask COBB about. I’d highly recommend ordering from Offroad Alliance though.

    Shoulda just bought a roush cold air intake for $300 and petal commander for $300 if you want to fix the hp and lag for cheaper...

    • @KidRichmond
      @KidRichmond  3 года назад

      Interesting comment. Unfortunately it’s not as you say. 1. Pedal commanders do nothing to eliminate turbo lag, wish they did but they don’t. They merely adjust curve for the throttle wire input. You can depress the pedal 1/4 and get full throttle. 2. The factory intake in a raptor (and most vehicles) is a cold air intake. CAI can help the engine get a better breath but it isn’t the magic HP gain that everyone claims it to be. At most some people have been able to pull 5hp gains on a dyno and even those are tall claims. The importance of adding an upgraded intake to a tuned engine is simply to make sure the engine is capable of pulling in a large enough volume of air under x amount of time to be compatible with the remapping of the tune. 3. Shoulda just bought a Ram TRX but those weren’t available at the time.

      Kid Richmond I’ve been studying the raptor for at least four years and just can’t do it. I love the idea but the reports of problems and shop visits just annoy me to no end. Every component in a Ford is as cheap as it can be made. I just can’t do it.

    I own one and they are shit in terms of power delivery. Quality has really suffered with all the plastic garbage. Door latches are shit. I was a big fan of ford products, now I have my doubts. Great aftermarket support, but only after $3500, should have come from factory with all the tunes especially at 80k.

      Glad to hear you’re not in the fanboy camp that just wants to choke on Ford’s schlong. I caught so much hate for saying this truck sucks from the factory. I now realize most people have low standards.

    Wtf is this guy talking about? It's not powerful stock? It's more powerful than the gen 1, and I'm sure it's one of the more "powerful" stock trucks that you can buy

    • @KidRichmond
      @KidRichmond  5 лет назад

      Adam Erickson for how much this truck and what it’s marketed to do, the truck lacks power from the factory which is easily accessed with many different brand tuners. The fact that a $500 tune can unlock an additional 80-100HP is evidence enough that companies saw the lack of power as a great money making opportunity because the customer demand is there.
      If you try to offroad the raptor in hot weather you’ll quickly find that the stock intercooler is prone to heat soak which is another reason why companies such as COBB have engineered a larger FMIC to allow the truck to deliver consistent performance. I’ve logged more miles than 90% of Raptor owners in the offroad department and feel I’m delivering a qualified assessment for those that use their Raptor as a Raptor and not a commuter vehicle.
      I stand by my original statements that for the amount this truck cost and the fact that Ford could’ve easily unleashed the appropriate amount of power for the same cost, leaves buyers underwhelmed. But like you said, what the fuck do I know.

    • @KidRichmond
      @KidRichmond  4 года назад

      Toddly21 not exactly how that works but i can see why you’re thinking that. It’s just a slow truck for the specs it has. Even the ford engineers think so but since fanboys buy them up they don’t have a reason to make them faster. Well, now that the TRX is coming ford will have to do something.
