I looked this up in the manual (page 168). Clear is in focus, redish color areas are unfocused and closer, blueish color areas are unfocused and further.
Unfortunately focus mapping Only works for video and ONLY on autofocus lenses - specifically Sony lenses and just a few third party ones. So it’s kind of useless really since you might as well just use the autofocus
@@Josh_Sattin I think it’s unlikely to ever roll out to manual focus lenses as it requires full electronic communication with the lens. Essentially the focus map is just a new way to display the information used by the autofocus system
I've been trying to use Focus Mapping and I find it too inaccurate, in low contrast scenes it's showing things out of focus that are in focus and in general you don't see exactly what is in focus like in focus peaking, I just can't find a practical use for it...
You should have mentioned at the very beginning that Focus Map is only a video feature...I was looking for this for portraits of 2-3 faces, to see how much I have to close the aperture to have them all in focus. Unfortunately, it cannot be used in Photo Mode for stills. Thanks for the video though.

I have not updated my camera and I don’t think there even is an update yet. Are you in video mode? I couldn’t find focus mapping in photo mode. I show in this video how to turn on focus mapping.

HELLO, I tried a manual lens on my sony a7iv camera and the focus map cannot be activated, does the same thing happen to you?

Is focus mapping available for every lenses or only G-lenses ? Thank you in advance
it works only with fly-by-wire lenses, not old manual or cine lenses, which is dumb

Is this feature applied only with Sony FE mouth lens? Or it can be used with any manual lens like Leica or Voigtlander lenses. Thank you.
I don’t have any manual lenses to test, but someone in the comments here said it didn’t work with those types of lenses.

Let me clarify, does this focus map feature works with a manual focus lens (adapted vintage lenses)?
It worked on my Sony lenses for manual focus. Unfortunately I don't have any vintage lenses or any lenses that are completely manual to test.
