It’s rare that I would thank someone for an information I could see many people advice other with.. I sincerely appreciate your effort and thank you from the bottom of my heart This had me relieved.. and of course in grace of sharp footage that would look amazing with manual focus I was looking for magnifying only as new user of sony a7s iii, and I found all the three tips astounding and perfect of a gorgeous picture
3:30 As a newb struggling with my camera, I was just trying to figure out focus magnification. I had no idea focus peaking was even a thing 🤯 Update while watching: During the steps for the AF/MF hold - also had no idea I could also set a custom key to switch between auto and manual focus🤦🏻♂My life just got easier. Huge thanks for making this!
🙌No problem Danny, thanks so much for the support! Certainly there's a lot to learn when it comes to manual focusing, so I'm glad this video was of help to you.
A very nice a comprehensive tutorial well explained and easy to understand good job it has solved my Manuel focus problems. RJ. Philadelphia Pennsylvania.
Brother GREAT JOB! You just helped me more than you know, our Cooking shows are very high paced and this just saved the day for quick focus of our food on the fly. Thanks A MILLION. Aloha🤙🏾
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! Thank you so much for making this. It was made very well and you explained everything perfectly, this channel is going places, keep it up.
No problem! Yes, though it depends on the camera - newer Sony bodies since the a7 IV and up allow it. The older ones only activate peaking in manual focus.
Nice video :) I've personally found though that leaving peaking to high will include colored selections that are not really in focus at all, and it is difficult at times to distinguish what truly is the focal point of the image. I definitely recommend punching in on the focus assist to verify with your own eyes what is in focus on the image, irregardless of what peaking is showing
Thanks so much for this! I’ll happen to meet up with someone soon who has some good Canon EF lenses, but I could only get a manual adapter in time. So without this, I would be stuck in the menus all day instead of being out there shooting! Thanks!
I set a customkey to magnify when I want to manually focus on my A1. This worked ok on my Tamron 28-75 lens but did not work at all when I connected my new Brightin Star 50mm f/0.95 lens, which is a manual-focus-only lens. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Are you using any lens mount adapter with the Brightin Star? It could depend on what you've mapped - i.e. Focus Magnifier will work with MF-only lenses, but Auto Magnifier in AF may not.
@@andrewsaraceni Hi. No adapter. It has an E-mount. I suspect that it has no electronics in the lens to tell the Sony anything, so the Sony probably doesn't even know a lens is attached, let alone that it is in Manual mode.
nice tuto. On a7iv and a7rv, personnally i set focus magnifier on "OK" center button and keep trash button for tactile on/off (when my nose touches the lcd when in evf mode). Jason Vong and Philip Bloom are using AF/MF toggle on AFON and AF/MF hold on ael. toggle is nice because no need to press all the time when you want to keep focus on a building,... while people, a pole is suddenly on front. I like your AF/MF hold method but it requires to be in MF all the time while AF-C is very powerful. By default I am in AF-C. But on a7iv and a7rv, (philip bloom part 1 and 2), when you are in af-c mode, that af/mf hold behaves inverse. if i am correct, it works when you release the button instead of pressing it. correct ? I saw in a Crafford AF tuto that when we use movie button for video, half pressing shutter button makes a focus hold. Is is documented because not customizable.
I have the a7ii, which is quite old now. It has focus magnification but i cannot get it to magnify while recording in video. Are the newer cameras different and allows realtime magnification for focus while recording video?
Appreciate the help with explaining the focus hold button. I'm new to being on the operator side after releasing 2 award winning documentaries about my life. I have MSA. Easier just to goggle my name Austin Crawford, Again great explanation.
Is there an option for peeking to be only activated when im in manual mode and when i switch back to automatic focus to be turned off by itself? Like on a7iii...
Good question - it appears to be a camera to camera thing in terms of how it behaves. e.g. Most models in the Sony system it used to work like this, but as of the a7 IV and subsequent models, when it's on it's always on regardless of AF or MF.
Good question - peaking doesn't carry over the HDMI signal (it's only on the Sony LCD screen), but you can enable focus peaking on the Ninja V and view it that way instead.
Good point, that's a handy tip to be aware of. I believe it only works in manual focus as well (unless maybe you disabled all touchscreen functionality for AF).
Have you tried setting it up again from scratch? My a7R V setup video shows how I configure this: ruclips.net/video/I2Nlp2J2Whc/видео.htmlsi=7C7TFmWbe5a2Wjej&t=2864
It's "AF/MF Selector Hold" in the a7 IV - check my a7 IV Settings video around the 30:00 minute mark and you'll see how I set it up: ruclips.net/video/7ZPgUREdrYg/видео.html
@@Doogsay Might want to make sure your firmware is up-to-date, or see if you can access it in the menu regularly vs. mapping through a custom button (either one).
The only thing that doesn't make sense to me using my a7iv, is if I manual focus on a foreground object and focus peaking is on the object is highlighted RED zoomed in, so when I'm about to press the shutter button it zooms out, but still showing me the focus is on the foreground object "but why are background objects showing highlighted RED as well?" given aperture is set to f1.4 seems like the focus peaking also highlights objects that are not in focus, that shouldn't be.
I think a lot of that depends on the low vs. medium vs. high setting. You might notice a difference if you check focus peaking between using those different settings.

Dude, your last tip was an absolute life saver for me when my AF-C kept going in and out in a podcast setting 👍
Glad to hear it helped! Yeah the AF/MF Hold comes in handy in a lot of situations.
Just found this video after checking out your TTFArtisan 25/2 lens review. Getting back to my Sony 6400 and these settings are great. Thank you!
No problem, glad you found it helpful!
Thank you Andrew. Very clear directions and easily followed.
No problem Neville, happy to hear it helped!
Thank you Andrew! I absolutely enjoy your detailed content on the a7SIII.
Thanks, I really appreciate that! I'm planning to cover more topics/videos on the a7S III in the future as well.

hello there, for the video/filming mode, the maximum magnification is just 4x? I have got a sony alpha 7 mark 3
It depends on the Sony camera model/sensor, and also whether you're in video or photo mode. But yes in video, the a7 III is still 4x magnification.

Clear explanation but my brain is programmed to use af-on to lock autofocus so I’ll be programming the button on the lens as af/mf.
That's another good place for it!
