This, like most of Kris's content, is perfect for a DM on a budget. There's this huge gap between dungeonforge style prepainted or painting map pieces yourself (both expensive and the later requires time and skill) versus a 2d drawn map or a purchased flat map. These are the perfect in-between and I continue to find the style of the 2.5+d to be exactly what I want. I've actually passed up purchasing other items that I was interested in when they don't match the papercraft aesthetic, as I really like the cohesive look, and as Kris continues to create more and more content in his 2.5d papercraft style, it makes it easier and easier to stick to them. Having that grid being overlaid really works well, makes it almost transparent on first island swamp bit.
Thanks. It took a while to get it looking how I wanted - but I think I got it looking somewhat how I envisaged it in the end.
Goodness me! I remember wrapping a single flat texture onto a toilet paper tube for a pillar so long ago. Look at the magic Kris is pumping out these days...
I ran a game that I've had to put on hold after getting burnt out. The players had just entered a swamp and I think putting this together might actually help me with my writer's block.

Thanks for the video! Looks very clear, all the things you were doing, so it makes good sense. I think the grid pattern for the water and island bits worked out quite well, too. Really cool tufts and trees, as well. The scatter terrain pieces with both look great.
No probs. Even though all the individual pieces aren't particularly awesome on their own - altogether, they work quite well I think :)

Some tropical and desert themed locales would be really cool to see. Dunes, palms and oceans/ships would be interesting.
I have an idea that might work for palm trees - so that might be something I try in the future :)
That's a pretty cool result. I could see you even making some fallen tree trunks as well just by gluing them flat to a base.

Awesome work, as always. I can see those trees and bushes working in a creepy graveyard or barren wasteland too.
Yeah - it might be better to glue them to clear plastic bases - just to maximize their usage.
i really like how you only use basically paper but you still manage to get that 3d-effect to everything.
Thanks. This one did take a bit of work to get it looking somewhat like I envisaged - but the overall effect works well I think (even if those trees run the risk of getting caught on player's sleeves :) ).

This is one of my favorite videos youve made. Very cohesive. I'd love to see more like this but for different environments. Beach, desert, tundra, jungle, etc.
Most of my games encounters tend to happen in the wilderness, with only a small percent occuring in dungeons or buildings. Stuff like this goes a long way towards immersion. Love it!
Glad you enjoyed it. I have to admit that I usually fall back on a dry/wet erase mat and a few bits of scatter terrain for most of my wilderness encounters - but I think this one has turned out OK - so it might pave the way for other stuff in the future :)

I think you found the fastest technique for making tufts of grass other than using the ones ment for miniatures, but those are expensive! Also I really like the withered tree and it's texture it looks like it would be good for haunted house scatter tarrain.
The trees do look kinda creepy :) I might have have to try and make a large imposing one at some point (perhaps with mossy vines, or something like that, hanging off it) 🤔

This technique would work great with a snow texture. You could have "islands" of grass or rocky texture on top of a snow texture.

If you go over the water parts with clear nail polish it gets a watery shine, saw someone do that to dungeontiles!
Printing on glossy paper might be another option too (though, for some reason, my printer hates glossy paper 😑 ).

I'd love to do something like that - but I simply don't have the space at the moment I'm afraid :(
(most of the layouts that I've used IRL have been quite small and reserved for specific encounters)
Maybe one day I can get a dedicated gaming space - but at the moment that's a bit of a pipedream :)

I’m not sure once you have the pattern developed for a given terrain how hard it is to reapply that , but is there any chance this could be turned into a set of the tiny terrain hexes? With or without a supporting video would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Unfortunately, things generally have to be redrawn for the tiny terrain (with exaggerated/overemphasized details).
Working on this build now, Kris what is your secret for cutting such perfect circles for the bases? Are you using a punch or a circle cutter?
I just drew around some (mdf) miniatures bases that I have, and cut them out with scissors.
how do you get the textures you use ? you make them you self if so love to see a video how you make them. and what a amazing work you did there
While I know (and understand why) 99% of people download the pdfs for free - technically they are for sale - so I kinda have to make everything myself from scratch.
That's one of the reasons why I only seem to manage 1 or 2 videos a month - as it can take a lot of time.
And with regard to how I make them - there's not really a set technique. For example, the way I draw the regular dungeon tiles is totally different to how I did the land texture in this video. Every pdf is slightly different, and some pages (again, like the land texture in this one) might take days to complete.
Swamp butt and Marsh
You've probably been asked this question a gazillion times before, so I apologise in advance if you're sick to death of answering it, but here goes;
I noticed that you use glue sticks quite a lot on your builds. They're obviously easy to use, but when I've tried them in the past the paper would peel off within a year or so. Basically not so great for longevity.
So I was wondering if you've experienced the same issue or you've got a trick up your sleeve to improve their shelf-life?
Oh, and I love your creative videos. They get my imagination firing on all cylinders.
I don't really have much of an issue with the gluesticks that I use. I mean occasionally a corner might start to peel if it's been sitting in a box for a couple of years - but nothing that's hard to fix.
On the other hand, some of the very first tiles that I made - where I used a spray-on adhesive - some of those have started to peel (but I made them long before I started the channel - so they've still lasted well :) ).
