    If you're new to the channel I use the pinned comment to get any extra info across I might need to, as well as links to any upgrades to the build I might feature in a future video.
    Making the things I show in the video:
    The builds are all pretty straightforward to make, even if you just use 3mm magnets. Put it this way, all my examples in the video were made with blocks with all 3mm magnets, before I stuck 6mm ones in the bottom.
    Pausing the video will give you a good idea of how each one is built, so I thought I'd use this space to offer some tips on how to best build things so they're stable!
    When you're making things with these blocks, it's important to bear physics in mind. If you have bits sticking out, having a sloped section made of bricks and stairs supporting it will let you stretch that bit out further, and will also look more realistic more often than not.
    If you use 6mm magnets, either on the south poles or on a few blocks, you'll be able to stretch out these bridges further.
    Same thing goes for pillars and columns at the bottom, making some 'feet' from blocks and stairs on each side of the pillar can steady the piece dramatically. Generally speaking I found I only needed to add features like this where it might be expected for a structure to have supports anyway.
    Stone wall magnet hiding:
    So, in the cottage video I showed how to magnetise floor and wall tiles to connect WAY more easily, and I mentioned I would show how to hide the magnets away for when you want to use them stacked up.
    Essentially the method I used was the same as I show on these blocks, I used a hot glue gun nozzle to heat up the magnet and push it a little further in and get some space to fit the miliput.
    Again though, doing that is totally optional. Paint the magnets with tan-grey mixed with mod podge and they'll camouflage pretty well anyway.

      Have you seen the use of spherical magnets? They are mostly used in 3d printed tiles but have a thing that makes them worth while : you dont have to worry about the magnet facing. The way its working is each magnet has a small enclosure in which it can rotate freely to mach another magnet. Its easy to do in 3d printed aterial - but its quite heavy so you wouldnt be able to make as amazing stairs as the ones in your video - but it gave me an idea - buy a piece of thin plastic tube, cut it to fit the spherical magnet and sealing one end with a piece of foil - you can just put it into hole in the middle of each cubes face - i need to test it out as it has potential!

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 года назад +1

      It has potential, the main problem is the distance between magnets is increased so the strength is decreased massively, so you need bigger and more expensive magnets...

    • @maciejmazur2622
      @maciejmazur2622 3 года назад

      @@RPArchiveOfficial i dont think foil + milliput would be much worse than what you did in the video, and it depends how much and from where you buy - i got mine off china and they were less than 10c per piece i think (5 mm spherical )

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 года назад +1

      Actually for this build you might be right. The foil definitely has potential. When I get the chance I'll look into it, might be difficult to get a hold of things soon, we're headed back into a harsher lockdown tomorrow.... And that's on top of brexit disruption etc :/

    Have you considered putting rectangular magnets in the bottom corners of blocks instead of disk magnets in the middle? For example, for a 3x3 tile, you could use 4 rectangular magnets alternating up/down. This could cut the number of magnets in half.

    Make yourself a real entrepreneur and get rich by casting those blocks into resin ones / or 3d print them and then launch a KickStarter campaign. You will sell them like candy.
    It's a simple product, yet so great and uniform with almost infinitive ways to use them. Those are the best products. Go for it!

    You can also use dollar store foam core, if you don't have a hotwire table for milling one inch cubes.
    5 layers of 1 inch square pieces foamcore should bring you to the desired thickness and can be textured much like BMC's square pillars.
    Stairs are admittedly more fiddly to make using this method, but still manageable.

    Just realised that MC might actually not be a bad medium for playing DnD. Especially if they make a mod to let you have character sheets and dice in game.
    Sure, playing at the table with physical paper and dice is a better experience in many ways. But with Corona and all, an online way of playing is nice. Roll20 is great for it, but I've always felt annoyed by the 2D format.

    Maybe using a heat gun (carefully) can cause the cuts you made automatically widen up. Not that experienced with foam so maybe it only work on certain types of foam:)

    Now it got me thinking, how these could be mass produced and shiped at low cost ?
    Let's face it, most DMs will just order the full set and pay the peice instead of crafting, woch creates the possibility for trade 🤔

    I really liked the tutorial. I'll probably make some for an upcoming D&D campaign!
    Small note, the rollers of greenstuffworld work really well for greenstuff, miliputt etc. Shifting Lands(the same brand as the guider for your hotwire tool) also makes texture rollers specifically for foam.

      I honestly didn't realise the shiftinglands ones were different, do they solve the depth problem? I'm imagining that's hard to do in non styrodur foam...

    • @gades46
      @gades46 3 года назад +1

      @@RPArchiveOfficial they differ from the greenstuffworld ones in how deep and sharp the structure is on the roller.

      Interesting... The test rolls they show on the site don't look much different but I may have to test at some point :)

      Cool :) though I'd advise using my magnetic building system for the bulk of buildings and dungeons, they're easier to make and allow more variety. Check out the links in the description :)

    Is there anyway to get easy to follow diagrams for all the parts you’ve made so far? If not I might make one for me to follow and possibly share it for the community. I find diagrams a lot easier to follow than videos and purely written instructions

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  2 года назад +1

      Unfortunately not yet simply because I don't have the time or skill, or time to learn the skill 😅
      Longer term I'd like to do something like that with enough funding to pay someone fairly to do it without slowing video releases down :)
