In all honesty it’s a genuinely useful tool, especially for anyone too tired to write - and its only getting better. Helps the channel out too :)
    Anyway…
    MASK SAFETY
A few things we work with require good ventilation, a mask, or both.
    HOT WIRE CUTTER
When using a hot wire cutter, solid ventilation can be enough. Open windows, and a desk fan next to the cutter that blows towards the window is enough in most circumstances - but if you struggle with this, or can smell it consistently - I would recommend wearing a filter mask (links in the equipment list).
The white smoke given off by the cutter is primarily CO2 and water vapor, which are far less harmful than other common art products like aerosols and paint thinners (or hairspray). The toxic values are far less than wood-smoke, which contains tars, resins, creosote, and acetic acid.
IF you burn the xps foam, rather than melt it, it gives off black smoke. This is toxic. Make sure you turn the cutter off if not cutting, and try to remove foam stuck to the wire with some scrap foam, rather than letting it burn up.
    CUTTING/SANDING FOAM
When cutting or sanding foam, you want to be wearing at least a dust mask (though a filter mask will do) to avoid breathing in the dust. Always make sure to hoover up this dust once you're done.
    GROUT
Always wear a dust mask when using grout, ventilate the area, and hoover it up once it settles. It is basically cement, you don't want to be breathing it in!
On a side note, try to wash your hands in a bucket and throw the water out, rather than washing it down the sink. A small amount probably wont do anything, but in excess in theory it can cause problems (again, because it's basically cement!)
    BALSA WOOD
When scratching grain into balsa wood with a wire brush, wear a dust mask to avoid the sawdust. Fairly standard wood stuff.
    GLUES AND SOLVENTS
Many things we use regularly (even home use) give off nasty fumes of some description - superglue, polystyrene cement (plastic glue), liquid latex, among others. For the most part, we don't work with these things for an extended enough period for this to be a problem, though following safety labels on products is of course important :)
As a general rule, I throw anything that 'smells' into this category - some are mostly harmless, but I aim for better safe than sorry!
Basic ventilation (opening a window) will usually be fine if working with them for a short period, but IF you intend to spend hours using one of these materials I would recommend solid ventilation, adding a desk fan, or even using outside.
    MAGNET SAFETY:
Don’t use around small children or animals, if ingested these can be dangerous. Never let very strong magnets slam together, especially thin ones. They can and will smash under a lot of force, and then become very sharp, highly magnetic shrapnel. Not good. Easy to avoid though, just take care.
NICKLE STRIPS/STEEL TIN CAN TIPS AND SAFETY:
Nickel and Tin is safe enough to use if you're reasonably careful, I used to cut most of mine from tin can lids with scissors, though now I use nice smooth nickel strips.
Made sure you're wearing thick gloves when cutting and handling, I use some woodworking gloves.
If you want to make doubly sure the metal isn't sharp, use a metal nail file along the edges to round it off.
    DIMENSIONS:
    Jig/frame:
    8" chipboard square
2 strips of 3/8" square foam, 6 and 3/4" long
2 strips of 3/8" square foam, 6" long
    Card cores:
    Straight:
One double layered just over (see video) 3/8" strip, 5 and 3/4" long
Two double layered template corners (taller versions, see template)
One single layered 1/2" strip, 5 and 3/4" long (laid flat)
    Straight attachment:
One double layered just over (see video) 1/4" strip, 5 and 3/4" long
Two double layered template corners (shorter versions, see template)
One single layered 1/2" strip, 5 and 3/4" long (laid flat)
    Corners:
One double layered just over (see video) 3/8" strip, 5 and 3/4" long
One double layered just over (see video) 3/8" strip, 5 and 7/8" long
Two double layered template corners (taller versions, see template)
One single layered 1/2" strip, 5 and 3/4" long (laid flat)
One single layered 1/2" strip, 5 and 1/4" long (laid flat)
    Small corners:
Two double layered template corners (shorter versions, see template)
One single layered 3/4" square, cut in half diagonally (laid flat)
    DRILLING TIPS
If you are going to use a drill, I found it better to get the dremel spinning first on the lowest speed, and then gently press it to the point I wanted to drill. If you press it in place first and then turn it on, I find the drillbit wanders a lot more from your initial mark as it winds up.
I also placed the piece on some scrap foam to keep my fingers away from the drill, and held the drill at the front, stabilising it against the table with my little finger, and withto gain another point of contact to stop it wobbling.
    PLASTER PAINTING TIP
If the thin black paint doesn’t soak in properly and just acts like…well, like thin black paint on plastic - there is a way to get a good result still. This happened to me a few times, and I got around it by spraying the pieces black with an aorbrush (though a smooth coat with a brush would do) and sprayed it with ak ultra matte varnish, again with an airbrush but a brush should do. Finally, once newly dry I ran my finger over the matte varnish, which fluffs it up a bit more grey before its fully cured. A nice result without that drybrushed look….
    LAVA CRUST PATTERN TIPS
I aimed to make the shapes jagged and uneven, avoiding curves and generally 'drawing' them like a coastline on a map, with bulges and coves, nearby 'islands' of lava skin that were clearly once part of the larger piece.

I have watched many modeling videos from many channels. The most significant difference between other channels and your channel is that most other youtubers build models to impress. Your models are built to be played with. This makes your videos so much more enjoyable and engaging.
I currently do not have the money to become a patron member, but I would like to make a suggestion for your next scenery video.
Could you make a large ship, with multiple decks that minis can be placed on? You could also make two ships to simulate ship to ship combat or boarding actions. I would love to see what techniques and tricks you would use!

Hi, I was just watching your lava tutorial, and I had a video idea for you (you probably wont like it because it isn't that big or necessary for D&D but I thought I would reach out to you anyways) My thought was to build accessory bones, like dragon bones, to put in the ground for decorations, like a large ribcage that a group of goblins could hide in, or a stone henge type thing made out of bones, maybe a huge skull with tusks that you hide in. The idea is that you could do loads of things and have a lot of creativity with bones to play with, in a desert set up there could be bones lying on the ground to show the lack of water, I just think it would be a nice touch for decoration and provide extra gameplay usage. It's just an idea though, thanks for reading,
    bye.

God this is so good! That's a lot of leds. Have you looked at sidelite acrylic? It has been used for a neon look without electricity. The idea is the light from the top and bottom run 90degrees once inside the acrylic so the edges light up. Well you can reverse it. Simply if you light the edges then it bleeds out the top and bottom. With a roughing of 200 grit that side will shine brighter acting as a diffuser. So more light less leds a company has been using this to make cheap light boards as of late.

Glad you're getting back to the normal routine and that also hopefully means you're feeling a lot better. Regarding hydrogen cyanide production from heating superglue, while there's no cyanide per se in superglue, it does contain the elements necessary to create hydrogen cyanide gas and does create a bit of hydrogen cyanide when heated beyond certain temperatures. Definitely it is better to avoid that.
For those that question this, see the paper "Investigation of hydrogen cyanide generation from the cyanoacrylate fuming process used for latent fingermark detection" originally published in Forensic Science International Volume 212, Issues 1-3, 10 October 2011, Pages 143-149.

personally, i think if there's cracks in the clay, it's perfectly alright since lava is melted rock, just paint it a bit darker yellow with black or red (or both) tint. i feel like it adds to the aesthetic more. even on the land terrain, cracks would look beautiful i feel like.
but if we're talking about durability, i have no idea.

i love modularity in my terrain so your channel is one of the most inspiring to me! and the crackle paste + oxide pigment combo looked so good, definitely gonna try that myself

Hooray, you're not dead! Sorry to hear you were stuck dealing with long COVID--that sucks.
This build is rockin'. I really appreciate how much thought you've put into the way that your terrain system all fits together.

I'd absolutely love to see some slow random brightness on those LED lightstrip boxes
nothing too fast, just a bit to give a "flow" sensation
