Makes me sad, end of an era, used to rent movies for my dad for years, he’s gone now and now so is Redbox
Hugs.
You can rent movies at the Library, even video games for playstation 5, xbox, and switch for FREE
Hopefully the library will be able to get revised dvds
Crackle will be missed I remember it being one of if not the first free streaming service 😢
Yeah it's sad to see what happened to Crackle as when Sony first started it, they had some great stuff on there like the entire series of Galaxy Express 999 uncut & subtitled, then they kept slowly taking more stuff away, and adding back in lower, and lower quality content to the point it was not worth the time to load the app, and Chicken Soup did the brand no better by a country mile.
Shame about Crackle. They used to be one of my favorite apps years ago, when I first got a Roku in 2016 (because they had so many classic shows I liked).
So crackle is shutting down…give it back to Sony
Luke, thanks again for this breaking news! Sad that Redbox and Crackle will be going away, though.
Bummer. The only place I can really borrow DVDs any more is the library.
There is a Redbox five minutes from my house and I used to get movies from there all the time but stopped a couple years ago because Hollywood stopped making movies I cared enough about to pay to see, Sad though that it will soon be close to impossible to rent or buy physical copies of movies
Since COVID hit, there has only been a dozen movies worth seeing in the last 4 years. Probably why Redbox is going out of business. Lack of good content.
That's pretty much why I stopped using Redbox, all they had were crappy movies and anything new is crap and not worth spending money on.
Not surprised about Crackle. I went on there and they had nothing I liked before. They took off Men In Black: The Series and Jackie Chan Adventures and those were two of their more popular shows so I had a feeling that was the beginning of the end.
Ty for the update Luke and please keep the content coming!
Amazon has Jackie Chan adventures
The last of an era. Nobody can rent physical media anymore. Crackle used to be a good service a while long ago.
Yes you can go to bend Oregon there is the last blockbuster you can rant movies
Borrowing from the library will at least keep physical media in circulation.
Renting physical media is a nonsensical idea these days anyway. It's far more practical to just send the data directly rather than dealing with discs. Redbox only existed because the legalities of streaming were set up illogically by greedy content owners, so it was still profitable to own discs and rent them out rather than just send out overpriced data streams.
Now, having physical media that you OWN is a far different use case. Because streaming companies can and will terminate your streaming rights to content, even if you theoretically "own" it (as happened with customers that bought content from Redbox), there's a good rationale for keeping disc versions of content you care about. If discs eventually go away, then "owners" of digital content should go to the high seas and find non-DRM copies of any content they own, and download it as a hedge against streaming companies pulling a fast one.
Physical media is starting to grow again since streaming services -media purchases are questionable now. People lose their purchases because of licensing changes or streaming sites shutting down.
Physical media is dead. That is why almost all the retailers have stopped selling CD's, DVD's and blurays. If you are still into physical media, the best bet is pawn shops or thrift shops. You can get most of that stuff for pennies on the dollar
Most people have just stopped buying media both digital and physical
yep i m acully rebulding my dvd/blueray collection. to many sites many on the path to shutting down soon what are you going to do when you favret movie cant be found online anymore. becouse you allowed these streaming sites to controle everything. also 98% of the new stuff i wouldent buy anyways.
Not to mention the fact that the streaming versions available of many titles are edited, sometimes without warning or even acknowledgment. Physical media never changes.
Yes, a lot of people are getting away from purchasing physical media, but it's a bit premature to say that the industry is dead.
Major retailers are realizing that physical media displays take up a lot of floor space that could better be used for other merchandise. Best Buy, to take one example, is simply shunting their physical media sales from brick and mortar to online.
Try your local library. Ours has a great selection of movies and TV shows, and thy are free to borrow.
My local library gets new TV shows and movies. Mostly DVDs, but also BDs.
I don't see libraries holding on to DVDs and CDs, VHS (If they still do.) and cassettes anymore either. With users abusing them the way they do it becomes expensive to replace them, if, in fact, they are able to replace them. It's only a matter of time before these forms of media are non-existent. At least this is what I think.
@@johnkoziol8538 I can see that happening. But for now it's working. Also, our library offers Hoopla and Kanopy streaming services. They are pretty good, but you really need to go to their websites to see all the movies and TV shows available.
@@johnkoziol8538 Probably true. Even if you don't abuse your digital media, over time bitrot will render it unplayable. The good news is there's always the high seas.
Crackle was one of the first streaming services I watched. They used to have The Three Stooges and Seinfeld.
Nooo,I like my cheap Redbox disc rentals. :(
I'm still not getting Netflix 😂
Wow this is sad… I haven’t watched Redbox or Crackle for a long time now but it was still on my Roku.
Chicken Soup For The Soul were great books too.
Yeah, I remember back in the VHS days there were dozens of mom-pop video rental stores all over town. Then Blockbuster moved in and wiped them all out much like how Walmart crushed family owned stores in small towns throughout the Midwest, leaving store owners to go work at Walmart for minimum wage.
No soup for you!
TOO SOON!!!!!!!
I wish streaming services would make it easy to watch closing credits, and also allow users to turn off the automatic play of next episode or movie. I also miss the commentary that is often included in DVDs.
it's so annoying when a Watch Next thing pops up! But fandango rentals do have extra features like dvds.
Back in the late 1990s I worked for a company that tried the Chapter 11 bankruptcy strategy first, they couldn't get a financing deal worked out so they just liquidated through Chapter 7. There used to be a Redbox in the front area of the local supermarket I patronize but it disappeared a few years ago. As for Crackle, that's one more streaming service deleted from an already overcrowded field of streaming services.
They should really just tell everyone that if you rent a DVD no need to bring it back.
Even for $1 they could get $500 per machine.
I like blu rays for movies rather then streaming.
I feel ya, but the Red Boxes in my area were so poorly maintained they barely worked, or had anything worth going out of my way to rent vs. just buying the disc if it's something I really want to see again, and again, just waiting till it came to a free service, or one I'm already paying for, or just a cheap digital rental if it's something I'm going to watch once, and not again but I feel is worth my money.
I hear ya, but Blurays cost more than DVDs (even used). I buy DVDs of movies I like to watch every few years, but most movies I watch once, maybe twice, and that's it, so streaming them is the way to go. Mostly action movies, some sci-fi, some comedies.
@@crosslink1493 they make some dvd players with some dam good upscalers. you can hardly tell its not a blutray.
Even though I didn't use redbox often, I preferred to rent a dvd versus my cable tv on demand. My dvd player is going to be lonely.
Used to use Redbox but not in a long time.
Well you can still get your DVD fixed by going to used record stores you can go to half Price Books and another the number of other stores. Some place is still sell DVDs you just have to look around.
yes but now hollywoke will not relese anything on media now. rual rentels was what was keeping it alive.
It may take months for people to realize these loses, but Luke is always on top of it...
I looked at Chicken Soup yesterday and saw a series that looked like it might be interesting "This is Paradise". A quick check showed it available at Philo. I have Philo so maybe I can watch it there.
As someone who has refused to install Wifi and pay for it every month for the last 3 years. (Wifi free) me and my gf would rent a good movie here and there from redbox. And just watch it on the playstation. This is horrible news for us 😔
Crackle is still on I'm watching it right now, can chicken soup of the soul I watched a movie on their last night so they're still on it for the time being, Redbox it's been down like you said for over a week
lol he sound happy as hell about this
Farewell Redbox. 😢
Dang! Crackle was one of the top 10 free apps.
I really never used Crackle and Redbox that much.😂
Happy Birthday Jessica
Crackle was good like 10 years ago and now its just the same generic titles that all the free streaming apps have
theres the public library I use them
Crackle shutting down man was one of the first app I used in find back in the day was the first one to put people on that watching on my Xbox 360 back then.
I'd be real interested if someone could buy the used Red Box kiosks, and repurpose them for independent use.
It’d be a shame if the 1000’s of kiosks were destroyed. Hopefully, they’ll end up in other countries where DVD’s are still being regularly consumed? Might see a few end up in independent used media stores as well. They could act as a dispenser for used loose games/movies? Or in a man cave? Someone’s home theater? 🤷
With online streaming being the obvious wave of the future, I'm surprised "Red Box" lasted for as long as it did. Granted, people were still using DVDs more when they came out but anyone with just a modicum of foresight could see that it would just be a matter of time before DVDs like other types of media would become obsolete (Laser Discs anyone?). Blockbuster didn't change with the times and they sealed their fate too because they were too. close-minded with their thinking. It's not rocket science to see what the future holds in store. All it takes what many a person hates to do and that is researh.
My crystal ball foresees the DVD tables coming back to Dirt Cheap locations. I have missed the 10 or 20 for $1.00 Blockbuster videos.
If I can hazard a guess what will happen to Redbox Streaming & Crackle, I’m thinking Fandango At Home might buy out either Redbox or Crackle or even both and fold them into their banner. If Fandango will just get Redbox, then Crackle might end up a Tubi or Roku property. I could be wrong, but that’s my guess.
Damnit I had the newest Christmas story on there
Redbox and Crackle had some pretty decent movies. i would get FREE DVD rentals periodically only at the kiosk but was not convenient for me.
My internet and phone are going up $3.00 each in August, 2024. Second increase this year! Spectrum Communications, OMG!
ohh well it was fun while it lasted.
I Crackle around the house. ... Beans.
Sounds like a good time to get a good deal on movies out of the red box..
Sadly I missed the game sell off
Excess stock of videos and cd's from a closed Phar-Mor in my area made it to a thrift store. they tried to sell them at the same prices as they did lol.
Oh no. Dvd rentals were good for older people who do not use internet. Sad and hate to see Crackle go.
They can learn to use the interent. It's no longer 2001.
@@thedude5040 Really, can they? Who is going to teach them. That's an ignorant persons mind and response right here. Lol They can barely remember a single phone number let alone the internet. You're assuming all have internet instructors, teachers or grandkids huh. Lol Even then, AGAIN they cannot remember a phone number, let alone turn on a computer, hello. I do not mean that in a disrespectful way towards elders but as some of us or as we age our memories are not always the sharpest so it's frustrating to them unless they have someone on stand by to help them when they make a mistake. For some it's easier to just put a dvd in a dvd player. That's all.
@@LittleLadyk2002 hello doubtful person. Old people are not not dumb and helpless. My 90 year old grandfather watches youtube videos and uploads pictures to his Facebook. Old people can't remember a phone number? Well neither can I at 32. This is why there are address books. Old people have physical books, we have numbers saved in our phone... not a big deal. Teach? Sure some may need help, but this generation of older people are much more familiar with technology. Really they can and do use the internet and likely already pay for data on their cell phones.
@@thedude5040 Glad to hear but he is not the norm for elders. Most elders memory tend to decline making it harder to learn new technology and generally using a DVD machine is easier than turning on a computer then locating apps etc. That's my point. There are some elders that are able to navigate internet and today's times but there are those that are not able too. you are assuming that all would want to learn or have others to teach them. Your 80 year old savvy internet user is not the norm. There are some in their 60's that still struggle using a cell phone. So DVD services will be missed. 32 years old explains a lot.
@@LittleLadyk2002 I happen to be among the most well educated persons on the planet. The problem with your perspective is that you don't know America ranks near the very bottom of the developed world for our adults knowing how to operate technology. It is the norm for 60-80 year olds to know how to independently use technology for watching television/videos. Next time try having higher standards, old people will surprise you. I'm actually more terrified at how far behind gen Z and younger people are at in their understanding of technology. I'm trying to find my replacement, but so many of them are unqualified. In my job you have to be one step ahead of the white house without "resources", meaning you have to know everything about everything almost to the point of being able to predict the future because I walk the grey line to keep regulators happy, climate extremists in the dark, investors wealthy, and your lights affordable.
Crackle will be missed. But everything has an end.
Crackle was good when it was part of Sony. Hasn't been any good for a long time
Redbox doesn't have the revenue to pull their already decomissioned kiosks. Costs are too high and storage expense is out of the question. With no true base of operations anymore, collecting the remaining discs is a monumental task and liquidation of old titles holds no value.
Good!
Bad! If physical media dies....every entertainment company turns into Ubisoft at it's absolute worst. Just look it up if you don't know the drama I'm referencing.
One last comment can you talk about Plex? How can I use it to make things to play to unlock them?
Sad. It looks like DVDs will eventually go the way of the Dodo bird.
What happens to the movies I purchased on-demand?
DVD? Can't remember last time I've seen one.
THe only thing I use to use Redbox for was to buy their $4 - $5 Blurays of triple A titles.
There's a redbox by me, and I see people getting videos all the time.
Not anymore. RIP Redbox.
Are we going to see a LOT of used DVDs go on sale?
I have a question for you, Lou, why is DVDs going out being bankrupt and I like to know why and why is crackle? Is it mostly all about sports?
That could explain why the app doesn't work anymore
Crackle app hasn't worked for me on any of my devices for 8 or 9 months. Always says playback error.
Crackle is still working as of 904 cst time
I just noticed on my Roku that where Redbox app was it says now "Redbox is not available", so I'm guessing it's shut down now. Crackle still works though.
I prefer Tubi TV😊
that is until Skydance changes things
@@0hffs Isn't that Pluto TV?
What happens to to Redbox individual channels on Tye Roku Channel app?
they are still there
Can't compete with Tubi or Freevee.
Can't compete with Pluto TV either!
@@francois-patrickarteau6511 I instantly fell in love with Pluto TV 5 years ago
I wonder if they’ll sell Crackle off (back to Sony)?
I was thinking the same thing: someone had told me that Crackle was a Sony property. The only thing I ever watched on Crackle was a limited series with David Faustino. After that, I rarely visited the Crackle site.
I don't think they can they have a streaming monopoly already. Buying more they could get into issues. Also Sony is really badly in debt
I did all my Redbox rentals back when it was a a dollar a day. I'd rent so frequently that I would exhaust all titles of interest. The kiosk at Ralph's was walking distance for me.
By the time they no longer posted the prices, meaning no more one dollar fee, I stopped renting.
Cineverse should have bought them 😭, it makes me feel sad
I brought movies to my library to stream now what do we do.
The Chicken Soup for the Soul books will continue!
Room in the market for a new company to come in with Ultra 4K DVDs? I might rent them sometimes. The audio and video quality could bring new rentals/sales?
4k Blurays already exist
The future is streaming. Just don't subscribe to all services at once. Rotate the subscriptions.
I am honestly surprised redbox lasted as long as it did.
maybe they should give crackle and redbox to sony
they could give crackle another chance, streaming wise
But as for a sony owned redbox, they could rename it to something that was a little more appealing that could help reboot dvd renting, as well as get people into bluray rentals as well as 4k rentals as well like you could name it crackle box rentals
You should ask the employees what they think?
Ironic that Redbox was a big killer of Blockbuster, but this same week, CBS Viacom Paramount, former owners of Blockbuster, also had to merge to survive. It is bad at all levels in Hollywood. Maybe if they just got back to making good movies....nah crazy talk I know.
I prefer blu rays to streaming services
There's alot of tv shows and movies not available so I buy dvd or Blu-ray
The question is how long will DVD players be available? I usually go to a thrift store on senior citizens day and buy discounted DVDs that I like or ones that I don’t have a streaming service for, or cost more than what I want to pay in order to stream. I usually pay $2 to $3 each. I can get tv series for around $3.50 per season and sometimes a several seasons for the same price. I refuse to allow a company to store purchased movie or music content that I have purchased.
I thought Sony owned Crackle?
They sold it to CSftS in 2019.
I'm guessing you guys don't know about choovierentals. Might want to look them up for physical media rental.
There's also Gamefly, CafeDvD, DvdInbox and 4kblurayrental
I HAVEN'T WATCHED ANY MOVIES IN DVDS FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS EVERY SINCE STREAMING MOVIES AND TV SHOWS WERE AVAILABLE TO BE WATCHED RIGHT FROM WITHIN MY HOUSE ESPECIALLY WHEN THE STREAMING DEVICES CAME OUT AS WELL
Crackle is still working as of 7/10/2024 @ 10PM ET.
Not for long😂😂. Come on now think
I'd sell Redbox and Crackle to keep them alive
They couldn't get people to work for them. They Pocketed the insurance premiums and people have to pay millions in doctor bills
Redbox tried to be the old Netflix but could'nt convert themselves correctly so now Neflix is king and has one less competitor. Redbox in short Blockbustered themselves. Too slow to adapt.
Apollo ruined the company
The economic meltdown continues
Crackle is still working so far. Maybe some company will buy Crackle.
Chicken.for the Soul is not down yet.
