Another slam dunk video Bryan!! Thanks again for the great content. As a wedding videographer I moved my R5 to a B cam and C70 as my A cam. With this firmware, I’m thinking of swapping as the R5 has a sharper image and is lighter and works a little easier on my RS2. Keep up the great content.
I was so excited when I saw the news. I shot interviews with C70s the other day and wanted to use my R5 for B-roll. I was so happy I didn’t have to use the Ninja V! I was able to easily move between monopod, gimbal and slider without the extra load. I tested in my house and filled up a 512 card recording 4k 60 and no heat issues. Only slightly warm to touch after. This is HUGE!
I love your tests and it's been a long time coming. Now the R5 is a real beast of a camera with no record limits and it does not overheat in the 'frequently' used modes. And it will give you plenty of 8K to play with.
You really had me at that "scent from camera". Kudos to being brave enough to tortue your own equpiment. Honestly this generation of cameras(R5/R6, A7m4) gave me a mixed impression because they tends to heat up during the day of shooting near the mount area which got me worried about longevity of the components. My old generation Z mount bodies, A7R4, A7III never had me worrying about them eventually gave in due to degradation of electronics like aging laptops.
He’s approaching 500,000 views. He’s earned every single one of them. But he should have way more in my opinion. I love his videos about the Ninja V combo.
Thanks so much for the shout out Deaf Director. Much appreciated. I also love your content, its informative and I've learned a lot. Firmware 1.6 changes how the R5 can be used as you've seen.
Thanks many for boosting our vigour and vitality by showing this video.I was much depressed after purchasing this camera till 1.6.0 firmware and your video. Thanks a lot.
C70 with raw and r5 with with no overheating warning. Canon has made me very happy to own these cameras whereas I was once worried if I made the right investment
Excellent demonstration, Bryan! Canon took some time to fix the issue but finally it's solved. I hope they can make an improvement to R6 too on this regard. Thank you and cheers from Buenos Aires
So awesome to hear from Buenos Aires! I've been pretty blown away by the improvement this makes in the R5 and I really hope they are cooking up something for the R6, too. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
My favorite video for birding with the R5 1.6 in SW Florida is a mixture of still photos and slow motion. To try and reduce overheating, I shoot the 120fps at FULLHD (1080). The slo-mo results using FULLHD are fantastic, but the camera heats up so fast that it can only do about 2 minutes of video. Most of the 120fps videos I shoot are less than 1 minute, but after about 3 sessions, he R5 is cooked. Here's the thing, once the camera is cooked, it takes FOREVER to cool down and return to normal operation. I don't like the R5c option because then I lose the In-body IS (my understanding is the IBIS was removed to make room for the R5c fan). Canon says the design of R5 body cannot dissipate the heat. If you like photos, it's a great camera. If you like shooting slow motion video (birds, sports, golf swing etc.), try a cell phone. It works much better.
Thank you so much for testing this outside in very hot conditions, I am alot less stressed out about the summer weddings, We have had some weddings ceremonies that were at the hottest part of the day this summer and that was very stressful trying not to miss anything yet at the same time trying not to overheat, I am now looking forward to our next August wedding 😁
Hi Deaf Director 😃 I'm a friend of Simon's from The Ordinary Filmmaker. Thank you for doing these tests on the Canon R5. I would like to see you repeat the 8K test with the same settings, but with a cold camera, and outside in 90+ degree Farenheight. I don't think your 8K test was on an equal footing to your 4K tests. Perhaps it is simply your particular camera results ? Others who have performed similar testing were getting longer duration of up to 2 hours of recording time in 8K.
Been loving your channel so far! I'm rethinking now about getting the R5. I'm coming from an XT3 Fuji and I've sold my gear looking for more resolution and some better 4k footage HQ and photography specs and AF capability. I know there is an R5ii rumored to come out possibly this summer with 61mp and a few other things but I can scoop up a used R5 for a pretty decent price and I'm sure the Mark ii version is going to be close to that $3800 range. For what I shoot sure I would LOVE an R5c but I don't do commercial work or paid shoots and in the event I wanted to do a project for a small biz or a friend client I think the R5 would still be plenty good enough. I still shoot film too with EF glass so using those lenses I like the fact of IBIS because my favorite lens is the EF 24-70 2.8ii. I mainly want the camera to shoot travel photo / video when going on vacation, hiking, skiing, street stuff and to document my newborn as she gets older and I know the AF will for sure keep up. I'm trying to think if the R5 could potentially keep me entertained for the next say 10+ years... pending any mechanical issues or it physically breaking. I would NEVER need to record something probably longer than 30min straight just shot clips here and there and mainly shoot in 4k24p and some 4k120p in clog-3. I know there will always be newer and better things but I'm someone who will keep something long enough if it's a good long investment.
Wondering if I should get the R5 since extended use hasn’t been tested. Meaning….Will using this in frame rates that normally would have overheated cause internal damage over time- say 1-2 years. Its a lot of money to fry internals and be out if warranty. I’d prefer the R5 over the R5C, just not sure I fully trust the longterm reliability. However if this did happen- and everyone’s R5 was toast after a couple of years- it wouldn’t be good for biz.
Keep up the great work. Is there any camera in its class that is better today. 2 years later with the new firmware....I cannot find it. I have owned sony's flag ships now great I prefer canon for my skin tones. C70 and R5 are a hard pair to beat.
I personally agree with you. I still say that the R5 is my personal favorite photo camera of all time, and the video has been great too, especially with firmware 1.6. Have a great day!
Hi Deaf, I wanted to ask you for information and share a problem I'm having with my R5. I state that I have already heard canon assistance. I was wondering if by chance you had also encountered this problem on your R5 and if you have found a solution to avoid it. Practically when I film in CLOG and especially in CLOG 3, horizontal stripes appear as image noise in the dark parts of my shots. First of all I went to see the instruction manual and it says that this can occur in particular conditions and advises to take test shots and possibly change the lighting conditions inside my location. Obviously this is not always possible. This is definitely frustrating. Below you will find what the manual says under the heading "Canon Log Image Quality". If this has happened to you before, do you have any advice for me? I would be grateful. (Canon Log Image Quality With Canon Log, movies may be affected by horizontal banding, depending on the subject or shooting conditions. Record a few test movies and check the results in advance. In particular, noise may become more noticeable if you enhance the contrast when color-grading your movies. With Canon Log, skies, white walls, and similar subjects may be affected by noise or uneven gradation, exposure, or colors. Horizontal banding is more likely to occur when recording somewhat dark, flat subjects. This image noise may even occur at relatively low ISO speeds around ISO 400 for Canon Log or ISO 800 for Canon Log 3. If noise is noticeable, try recording under brighter conditions and adjusting brightness in color grading. Noise can also be reduced by recording at ISO speeds lower than ISO 400 for Canon Log or ISO 800 for Canon Log 3, although dynamic range is narrower.)
It won’t. Canon will always keep the R5C dynamic range better. However, even though the R5 isn’t class leading in dynamic range. I think the sensor in 4KHQ mode is breathtaking and is some of the most beautiful footage out of any camera honestly whether it have 11 or 14 stops of dynamic range.
I mainly use 4K 120FPS for my photo shoots in nature and I always had problem with overheating in sunny conditions. I hope, now it will allow me to record more, but I am afraid of the level of heat from the camera and damaging internal components. I hope that Canon knows what they are doing and allowing it to pass the "boiling" point.
Nice tests @Deaf Director! Thanks for sharing the results. How does the 4K120 perform? It looks like Canon limits it 7min 30sec but you can keep recording. Get rid of this as well as the 30min recording limit and they’ll have more happy customers. They just need to caveat that the components may fail if this is constantly pushed at these high resolutions and temps. I will still use my Tilta fan to cool the components and hope to get it to last longer. The memory door can be opened if you use a small grommet to fake it that it is closed. Zitay sells a SSD to CF Express dummy card and they include these grommets. It’s just you cannot close the memory door so I just use a 2-4TB Angelbird CF Express and install the grommet to keep door open and air flowing.
they overheat only after 40+ minutes. However, the same as here you had the 8K test, you will give the camera a few minutes of rest and you did another 30 minutes :).
Think you shoulda tested the 4k 120, I think a lot of ppl use that. Edit: Btw, did you know there's a study that's pointing in the direction that Canon purposely gimped their R5 in order to sell more R5C units? They tested the internal temperature and everything and the whole timer they found to be made up. That study is found at eoshd by Andrew Reid.
Great video. I just ordered the Canon R5 because of this update solving the overheating issue. I would have originally ordered the R5 but the overheating was a problem so I ordered the A7S3. I am excited to start shooting on the R5. What lenses do you recommend that have autofocus? I ordered the 35mm f1.8. I really want the 24-70 RF but it is so expensive.
All RF prime and zoom lens have great auto focus! The 35 or 50 are great choices, just keep saving up until you can afford the 24-70!! 24-105 f4 is also a killer option too
I just got my R5 but I’d been reading up on this overheating issue. I’m not a pro and I’m not into videoing but I got a fat cfexpress card so I haven’t ruled out the possibility. As far as I can tell 1.6.0 gives you the option to stop the camera from shutting down. The shutdown seem to be what was upsetting people. I’m a bit wary of running the camera so it gets so hot they warn you about handling the cfexpress card. In anycase since I’m a video superlightweight I’m not likely to shoot lengthy videos. I’m impressed if Canon have installed robust components. Has anyone had a R5 fail permanently due to overheating?
You ever get the feeling like the update didn't really fix the issue but just increased when the warning came on? What if the warning was a way to prevent in camera damage somehow and all canon did was raise it up and be like "alright, you guys keep complaining, have at it but now your camera is gonna crap out on you a lot sooner...but we're not gonna tell you that teehee" ?
Do you think it is safe to live streaming with Canon R5 outdoors at those temps over 3 hours? not filming 4k but streaming something like 1080p/60.. thank you.

I have the firmware 1.6 but the camera stops recording at 29:59. It doesn't overheat but it has that 30 min limit. How can I get rid of that? Maybe I am not using an option that allows for unlimited recording?
You can’t get around that unfortunately. I’ve heard it’s because of some tax law or something but most cameras that are hybrid photo/video cameras are forced to have that limit. If you want to get around that you’d have to get an R5C or any strictly video camera

can someone please open up a canon R5C and show the heat sink and fan? seems like instead of frying your camera at 50C one could just add that heat sink into the R5 or pay $400 for kolarivision to do it for youo.
Not sure how this is possible. We just shot down south in 100 degree weather this week and we could not shoot because it was overheating. 60fps and we have to shoot flat and with the most resolution. We cant use that compressed IBP footage and get this footage to match all the other great cameras on site. The data, specially in low light situations is just not there. Spent tons of money on talent, flights...thank God we had other cameras. This camera is only usable inside in controlled environments. Canon...you need to fix this before selling it to take video when it really can't in real world situations.
Too late for me. I also think that this is a marketing move. Canon will get better profit with this firmware than launching an R5 II. A new R5 II should be even more expensive and if a Z8 gets to compete with R5 with FW 1.6 but at a lower price, an R5 II could be the worst move from Canon. Kind of foolish thinking this firmaware as a miracle. Is all about money, time, and competition. Lastly, we consumers. Thanks for this vid and your time.
@@zentai5076 I run my Canon R5 off USB-C all the time with a 65 watt charger in studio setting or my USB-C 100+watt portable power bank when I'm outside. I forget the exact numbers, but you need at least a 40watt Power Delivery charger or power bank.
@@zentai5076 It's great man. It's one of the best features of the camera. Before with my Canon 5DIV, I had to change batteries all the time when shooting videos outdoors. Not anymore.

There’s not gonna be an r5 ii for at least two years lol. R1 is next.
Why use the dummy battery when you can just power the camera through USB-C?
you cant operate on usbc
@@zentai5076 I run my Canon R5 off USB-C all the time with a 65 watt charger in studio setting or my USB-C 100+watt portable power bank when I'm outside. I forget the exact numbers, but you need at least a 40watt Power Delivery charger or power bank.
@@GoldwireIT oh snap! maybe thats why it didnt work. thanks for the heads up
@@zentai5076 It's great man. It's one of the best features of the camera. Before with my Canon 5DIV, I had to change batteries all the time when shooting videos outdoors. Not anymore.
@@GoldwireIT I have a dummy battery powered of USB. Works on the 5D4 also.
Nice job on the testing! Cannot agree about Ordinary Filmmaker as I find him to be a weaker version of Sandy Rivers that simply reads rumor sites - ruclips.net/video/72Mp_4tsfro/видео.html
