Great explanation Roger, lot's of info! Always shoot all-i! Alright! 😬 Ideally compression should be the last step in the finishing process. Thanks for having me part of your channel!
I’ve graduated from film school as a cinematographer, I’m a self learner editor/colorist/director, and I’m guilty that I didn’t know up until I watched your video the difference between ALL-I and IPB , so thank you for the most useful information and your amazing way of explaining it, Liked and subscribed ☺️🙏🏼👍🏼
I've been researching what in the heck is ipb and all-i is all over the place. This is finally the answer I've been looking for! Thank you so much for this. This is truly a great educational video.
@@RogerAVHansen that explains why yours sounds better than mine! The mic they sent me was junk, I never did a review, and have just pulled the boom arm and used my own mic on it. You didn’t miss out on anything.
Great explanation! I wondered the difference and now I know! I’ve been shooting IPB, ALlI rips through my memory cards way too fast. To me personally, I haven’t noticed a difference but then again my videos were all shot in IPB. Maybe I’ll try some ALLi for more scenic shots but leave the rest as IPB…
Found this video because I recorded some videos yesterday on my 5D mk4 usin ALL-I and my M1 Macbook keeps freezing up anytime I try to open the files in the finder window, or playback in VLC or Quick Time. Hoping I'm not stuck forever and won't be able to utilize these files.
It also depends if you film in 8 bit or 10 bit, and if you film in 4:2:0 and 4:2:2, and if you film in 1080p, 4K or higher. I’ve never had any issues with the IPB files coming out of the M6 mark II, but that is 8bit, 4:2:0 files. For RUclips and other social media IPB is more than fine 😊
So I'm now wondering if I shoot 4K IPB vs 1080P ALL-I would video quality be the same? Meaning pixels merged together in 4K look the same as pixels not merged in 1080p?
Great explanation! I hadn't heard such a detailed comparison before. You've convinced me take a closer look at switching to ALL-I. I'm pretty sure the R5 can shoot ALL-I in 10-bit. I have one and see no indication that it cannot create 10-bit files in ALL-I. There are some limitations of shooting ALL-I 10-bit to some SD cards, but if you are shooting CFExpress Type B, I'm pretty sure you are good to go on any format the camera handles all the way up to 8K RAW. It is worth noting I got the camera after firmware 1.3, so that could be new. Apologies if this is pedantic, but I'm going to speculate that ALL-I can be a burden on your computer due to I/O rather than 'processing' as you suggest. It essentially shifts the workload from CPU (IPB calculations to 'create' data for filling in gaps) to disk and memory I/O (moving a larger amount of data from the file container on disk to memory). I'm going with what my computer science brain is telling me and experiences with compression, not official documentation, so take it with a grain of salt. In short, if your have really fast disk speed, ALL-I may perform better for you. If you have an over-spec'd CPU, then IPB may be faster.
Thank you 😊 Since I’ve only read that the R5 only did ALL-I in 8bit, and you have an R5 in hand, I believe you when you say it can create 10bit ALL-I files, at least with newer firmware updates 😊 I used the term “processing” loosely as it’s more easily understood by the average person 😄 But it is as you say, depending on what computer you have, for some smaller IPB files may be easier to use, and for others ALL-I won’t be a problem 😊
IPB light is recorded in a lower bit rate than IPB, it takes up less space, almost half of IPB. It’s basically a “lower” quality image, but for social media content I bet you won’t see any difference..
OK this was exactly what I was looking for since I'm new to video, question I have is I'm trying to figure out downsampleing like from 4k to 1080 to get the best 1080 I can if there is a difference and how is that difference made. I'm using the Canon R5 and usually use 4k but some ppl pcs can't handle 128gig files very well LOL.
I haven’t tried the R5 myself but I’m sure you have 1080p recording in the R5 ☺️ But I’m not sure if it’s oversampled 🤔 But if the problem is that your Pc can’t handle big 4K files, try the different modes in 4K in IPB. I believe you have several options there?
probably you spend hours to make the animation of the frames to make an excellent explanation which never I couldn't understand how this works after I seen this video everything is clear for me and now expecting more tutorial from you guys excellent job!!!! Definitely I subscribed
The animations took some time yes 😊 So glad you found the video helpful! As long as it’s helping people understand, the time spent making it is worth it 😊 Thank you for the sub! 🙏🏻 Really appreciate it 😊

Nice job and great guest appearance. I think I understand it now. Thanks.
Thanx 😊
Great video. Educational and detail oriented. Thank you for the knowledge.
The best explaination on youtube done by ROGER , defiantly this video deserves a like ... extremely informative .... thanks a lot ...
Thank you for the nice comment ☺️
Very deep knowledge about the ALL-I and iPB. Respect! Subscribed already :))
Are you using that fifine mic they sent out to everyone? (Good explanation btw)
No.. no company has ever sent out anything to me. Unfortunately 😊 Everything I own and use I’ve bought for with my own money 😊 Thank you 😊
@@RogerAVHansen that explains why yours sounds better than mine! The mic they sent me was junk, I never did a review, and have just pulled the boom arm and used my own mic on it. You didn’t miss out on anything.
Well, then I’m glad I didn’t get one 😄
Great explanation! Keep up the great work.
Thank you 😊
Proper information. Massive value here
Thank you! ☺️
Thanks for simplifying this info for us, appreciate it :)

Thumps up Roger

Very helpful!

@@RogerAVHansen now im thinking on NOT buying the r7 😂
awesome. Thank you so much
Hope you got something out of it ☺️
Used IBP mostly due to file size, but I was not aware that it actually requires more editing power. I guess the more quality the better.
Very tech and well explained. How could you use time code with IPB video?
I’m not sure, don’t use time code in my videos.. maybe I should 🤔
Very well explained. Thank you
Thank you for watching! 😃
well presented
Thank you 😊
So I'm now wondering if I shoot 4K IPB vs 1080P ALL-I would video quality be the same? Meaning pixels merged together in 4K look the same as pixels not merged in 1080p?
4K will always look sharper no matter if you shoot in All-I or IPB 😊
Thanks for share this information!!!, Can i transform a file recorded in ibp to all-i compresion?
Unfortunately no, the file recorded in camera is the file you get.
@@RogerAVHansen thanks
Also, if you’re shooting mostly talking heads, IPB should be at the top of your list of compression schemes you should consider.
IPB isn’t a bad compression, it works fine in most situations, but if you want the best quality ALL-I is the way to go.
Great explanation! I hadn't heard such a detailed comparison before. You've convinced me take a closer look at switching to ALL-I.

Is it a con that the R6 doesn't have all-i compression option?
Depends on how heavily your going to color grade you footage, most of the time I bet you won’t see any difference 😊
hi whats the differnce ipb light and ipb?
IPB light is recorded in a lower bit rate than IPB, it takes up less space, almost half of IPB. It’s basically a “lower” quality image, but for social media content I bet you won’t see any difference..

It’s all done in your editor of choice. From 4K to 1080p you just export your project in 1080p 😊
@@RogerAVHansen oh so the R5 won't record 1080 over samplied?
I haven’t tried the R5 myself but I’m sure you have 1080p recording in the R5 ☺️ But I’m not sure if it’s oversampled 🤔 But if the problem is that your Pc can’t handle big 4K files, try the different modes in 4K in IPB. I believe you have several options there?

What about IPB Light on the Canon R5?
IPB light is a more compressed codec than IPB.
@@RogerAVHansen thanks. Have you used it though?

try to gange PAL to NTSC if yuo want to have both ALL-I and IPB
So you mean you get ALL-I if you switch to NTSC?
