    I like that Honda engine spaces are alway very well ventilated with plenty of free space. The bad examples are BMW and Mercedes engines with no space to cool but cramped with tons of plastics to fail around 50,000 miles even with regular maintenance.

    Finally, I’ve been waiting for someone to do a video like this. But I wonder why Honda engineers deleted VTEC on this DOHC motor since there wasn’t any reason to do so. It would allow for more power overall while keeping the engine efficient. The power figures aren’t different from the SOHC design so this is weird.
    & the quad VTC setup with a timing-belt is interesting since such a thing requires oil…. & timing-belts aren’t fond of oil the same way timing-chains are.
    & I’m disappointed that the engine isn’t going to be as pretty as past J-series V6 motors (yeah I’m petty). But it is an interesting update to a beloved engine.
    I hope you upload more info on this engine.

    • @BCautosolutions
      @BCautosolutions  Год назад +4

      So initially when this engine (head redesign) was introduced, the big claim was it needed to be shorter to accommodate the tlx engine bay height. Now that almost seems like a load of crap because it’s made it’s way into the mdx-S and now the pilot. That was their pitch so who really knows. As these make it into the much more popular pilot I’m going to assume that one of us Honda guys will have one apart before the Acura guys just by default of having more units out on the road.

    I have this engine in my 2023 Honda Pilot. The engine just failed with 5,500 miles. It began throwing a bunch of codes and lost power. They said a solenoid granaded on one of the heads and one entire head needs to be replaced but the part is on back order. In my mind metal shavings have now got in the oil and have been transferred throughout the engine because I was able to keep driving it home. The tech said they're are no signs of metal debris in the oil and that's why they are just doing the head. What do you think? I am so disappointed, the main reason I bought a Honda is because I was told they are very reliable. I was hoping to keep this car until 200k miles.

      I have 23 Acura Type S which is pretty much identical as to the position of the oil filter. Probably the same oil filter. Turn the wheel to right and you will have easy access to the oil filter. A drain tool for the oil filter can be made very easily from the flap of a box from Amazon. Using the score of the flap make the width 3’ on each side of the score then 12” long. You can also put a small angle in it where it fits up against the engine below the air filter. Getting to the drain plug may be a little more trouble on the Pilot them the Type S as I can raise the Acura with its air suspension. But it really is a very easy oil change and not messy if you use the tool I described.

      I wondering the same. The deletion of VTEC doesn’t make sense as it would actually add power without hindering fuel efficiency. I’m scratching my head as the power figures aren’t much different from the SOHC VTEC predecessor.

With doing so and making the valve covers acting cam caps/holders i don’t think there was design room to allow for the traditional rocker arm setup found in older engine (vtec and non vtec) I do think they found a great balance producing torque super low and carrying the power to redline on the turbo engines atleast with the aid of the turbo as well).

      Timing chains stretch, even on some "reliable" manufacturers. Plus water pump replacement on chain driven engines is not far off from the belt/water pump service. I will say it would be nice if Honda would make the pistons with valve notches to become non-interference.
