Happy birthday Phil not sure how old this video is but I’m 79 in a month ,still love my time on the lathe and love your informative vids allways gain a tip or two from them Regards
WOW Phil I can't believe I missed this video. but so so beautiful. I just made 2 for my brother who just retired from our family business. I can appreciate urs. weldone. given me ideas. lol
Wow again that is one nice vase you done great. You the man that's for sure. Let me tell you. You do wonderful work and I can see the pride and rightfully so
Happy Birthday, old friend!! Welcome to the 71 Club!I hit 71 in April myself and I used to be a widower also. Wasn’t one long, for God led me to a wonderful woman to finish out my life with!! She a couple of years younger and we practically grew up together but I never knew her at all! God is great! Try using your Skew on some of these Spindle projects- it is very versatile but does take some practice!!!
I like those little vases. I've done about 5 so far but I don't have one that's shaped like this one. I will before I go to sleep tonight. I'm making about 40 to 50 for my daughters wedding in a couple months. Happy B-Day
Phil was actually great job as my 88 year-old brother who's a woodturner tells me there is no wrong way there is no right way whatever you are comfortable with and whatever produces the end results it looks good keep spindle turning a 1 8 th in spindle gouge will help on the fine details
Art is the eye of the beholder! There isn’t a right or wrong way it should look! Keep it up! Love your stuff, and would love to see you do more vases and deeper bowls!
Phil, I don't know the exact date of this video but RUclips says it's 2 yrs old and it was your 71st birthday. 2 days ago, I turned 73 so along with Gary Ascher, we're 3 turning in our 70s. I'm a rookie compared to you 2, but enjoying every turn of the lathe. Thanks for sharing your videos and offering Insight along the way.
I'd love to say you're never to old to turn, Josh, but I don't want to find out I'm wrong! LOL! We'll just keep turning until we stop. Thank you for watching and commenting, much appreciated! PS: You are the youngest of our little group. Happy Birthday!
Great job Phil. When I saw that you were using Sycamore for this project I had to watch as i have a lot of it on my property and have some drying for a turning project in the future. Glad to see how beautiful it can be!
Hi Phil, I have to say this, at 71 your still a young pup and doing great. A few days ago I just turned 87 . So when I get up in the morning and stand up and both feet are aimed the same way ,I Say BONUS 😅😂
have faith in your ability young man. the art comes from what you see in the wood not what others think. even though you are new at spindle turning you done a wonderful job. you let the wood tell you what it needed. again good job.
Seems it must be close to your B Day , though three years latter , so Happy B Day ! And remember that wood turners never die , they just get groovy er !
Phil, I found this video just before the end of my day. Very enjoyable to watch. Decision making can give us fits. A friend of mine shared a quote from his Dad, "Do something, even if it's wrong." Sounds like the only way to get to where, "it's time for sanding." Nice piece. 🇺🇸
Even though I gave you a thumbs up and will subscribe, there's one thing that I don't like about you, Phil. You're younger than me, so stop crabbing about 71 being old. What a pleasure it was to watch this video since you really didn't know what you were going to do. I was able to hear you plan and then second guess what you decided to do. This made me relate to turning more than any other video that I've seen. Your modesty is pleasurable and makes turning much more interesting. So hang in there Phil. You may actually make it to 72 and then you'll be really old.
Happy birthday Phil!!! For 71 years old you sure don't sound or look that old , I would've guessed you were in ur 50's tops , good for you man , keep up the good work , your videos are awesome....
Happy Birthday Phil. Nice little vase. You could have rounded nicely with a skew, then made a couple of V-cuts and burned in some contrast with a wire.. Just another approach
That was so enjoyable to watch Phil. Recently got the gear but have not set up yet, I'm 68 and was a little worried about safety, but you have encouraged me to get started. Really liked your vase thank you.
I was 69 when I asked around if I was too old to be buying a new lathe. Everyone said "go for it" so I did and I'm happy every day with my decision. So, I will say the same to you, Steve, Go For It!
Awesome, the bottom dark cracked part was a knot from a limb. Have you tried getting a used, pre-owned 3/8 & 1/2” old-school Continental spindle gouges. We learned on these in school in the 50s through 1970s, they seem to be less grabby not as aggressive and heavy as the new ones sold today. Wonderful job, thanks Phil🎉
I love how this turned out, Phil! You had me laughing a couple of times because I'm still pretty new at this woodturning and tried to make my first snowman a few weeks ago. I had a devil of a time trying to make it more round, really didn't know what I was doing. Trying to decide which tool was best and don't have that many yet..this part needed to be wider, this part needed to be thinner, etc. At one point I was feeling pretty good about it when a piece came flying off the "hat" and mangled it. Ole Frosty has a very floppy hat this year. LOL. But, having fun. That's the most important thing. Love all your videos. (Belated Happy Birthday!🎉)
Going to try a similar shape like it so much. A neighbour gave me about 6’ of 4”x4” yew wood so got goblet supplies. I guess at 70 years old I’ve got another year to go before I get old!
Always a pleasure to watch you turn Phil. I'm similar and I usually let the blank decide what develops. Detail spindle gouges take a lot of getting used to. I prefer to use small bowl gouges and a diamond radius type carbide cutter for detailed turning.
Happy Birthday!!! (Belated) Thanks again for your ideas and techniques.... I am a 2 year turner at 67 years old... I like to watch your details....Randy
One of the first videos I watched on wood turning BEFORE I even got my lathe. I think I was hooked at first sight. Will always be one of my favorites. Your commentary is, as always, very entertaining and funny.
If i may, and i may sir. To me, there is no such "not artistic". Art is being invented every minute. Thats a great vase and you are funny to hear..and watch.
Great job Phil. Learning something new is sometimes rough, tough and difficult. I am pretry new to wood turning and watch alot of RUclips videos. Probably the one turner that heiped me the most with using the spindle gouge was and is Mark Sillah. He explaines in a way, my wife even understood. Hope it helps. Thank you for your videos Jack
Good job Phil! I just started wood turning a month ago with a mini lathe and a set of carbide tools. Just getting the feel for turning then expanding with other tools. Keep the good videos coming. Giving me ideas and knowledge of how to turn.
Thank you, Shawn! That's what I did. I had all the gouges, etc., but couldn't get the hang of using them so I got some carbide tools just so I could turn something while I learned. It helped a lot. Phil
Happy belated Phil! Lol. Missed it by 3 years and a month in a half or so. One thing I've learned about spindle gouges and I'm sure you have by now too, is that you should only go down hill with them. Going uphill can cause problems. I watch a channel called the woodturner21 and all he does is spindle turning with mostly a skew. The guy is crazy good. Hope you are well my friend!
Nice one Phil! I’m not much of a spindle turner, but recently my son and I started to make beer steins and whiskey glasses. I turn the main body and he creates iron bands and handles for them in his blacksmithing shop. We are still at that “what if we” stage of making things work. Once we get one to a finished stein (mug) I’ll try to get a picture to you. Oh! by the way we are approximately the same age. My birthday is the end of October. I turned 74. Cheers, Rick
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Yes you are so right. I get a real thrill working with my son. He took up blacksmithing as a hobby a few years ago, and some of his stuff is amazing. Last weekend he made me a hollowing tool and I put the handle on it. Great fun!
A very enjoyable and easy listening presentation, and as a new to turning myself I could relate to all your thoughts and quandries and like you think it out as I go along. My dad used to say "you can make a feature out of a cock up" and I do it often as well. Alls well that ends well - a lovely piece Phil, happy birthday and thanks for sharing, regards, Tony (UK)
Well done Phil - turned out lovely. Very much enjoyed the self deprecating commentary; it it weren’t for the accent I’d have put you down as a British fella! Hope you had a good birthday meal!! All the best!
Thank you, David! Maybe it's because I watch a lot of UK turners. Birthday dinner was great! Thank you for watching and your great comment, much appreciated! Phil
madronawoodworks I’ve watched a few of your videos now and enjoyed them all so thank you as I’ve found them really inspiring! I only started turning in September. Joined a local club and don’t have a lathe of my own as yet (tiny workshop is coming along; although I currently have a leaky roof!) but hoping to get one in the new year all being well.
@@davidholmes3776 Well, I don't know what to say, David. I love turning but man, I used to like doing other things as well. I won't tell you not to get a lathe but be aware, if you do, life as you know it is over! LOL! Phil
Nice turning Phil! Even if 3 years ago you produced this video it just showed up! Lol I started out making a lathe with a drill for turning handles for tools such as chisel handles, lathe handles etc. Sure is a lot to learn for sure! So I bought a lathe and started turning bowls 2 years ago. Way to go thanks for sharing wish I seen this on your birthday, Happy belated lol! 👊🏼
A man after my own heart. I appreciate your candor and honesty. I, too, just started turning and can understand your hesitation on every move. I am 76 and had that many “catches” my first week(lots of design changes).
Ah, yes, design changes. I can definitely relate! LOL! You've got me by a couple years, Don, but it's really good to hear from another old-timer woodturner. Thank you for taking your time to watch my videos and for your great comment, much appreciated! Phil
Phil, you should know by now that you do not know what object is hiding in a piece of wood till you bring it out. Hope you had a wonderful birthday, and may all your surprises this year be pleasant ones.. Blessings.
Happy belated birthday. I’m very new to turning...as in I don’t have a lathe yet, Lol! But, I’ve been binge watching your channel for the last few days and can’t get enough information and inspiration that you provide!
Well, that IS new, Benjamin! LOL! When you do get your lathe, post some pictures somewhere and provide the link. Love to see what kind of turnings you decide to make! Thank you! Phil
Happy birthday ( I know we are late but it still counts ... Right 😉).. The finished item is truly beautiful. YOU need to stop doubting yourself young man. Your work is beautiful. Keep on impressing those of us that enjoy watching you. Your friend Tuffy should work on making you a narrower cutting tool like you were talking about when you were working on the base neck area.. Just a thought..
Happy belated Birthday Phil. Hope you had an awesome Birthday Day supper out. Love how your project turned out. Your projects are always a great tutorial too! We all can see...turning keeps you young! Take care Phil. Bob.

Phil, you should know by now that you do not know what object is hiding in a piece of wood till you bring it out. Hope you had a wonderful birthday, and may all your surprises this year be pleasant ones.. Blessings.
Thank you, Greg!

Thank you!

This was a few years ago, Gerry. I'll be 75 a a few weeks. Looking forward to a birthday dinner! 😊
Looks good happy late birthday my friend
Thanks for the visit, Butchie! 😊
Thank you, Patricia! 😊 I now have some narrower tools for next time!
