Well now...this was interesting. I knew I was going to say nice looking grain. But when you showed it at the end I was blown away. It's not a bowl or a platter or any conventional turning with some sort of a utilitarian use. What it is is ART pure art at its finest. I know people that would absolutely love to have it. The grain is very nice but that bark sets it off and the areas with the groves look like you designed it that way. Wait you did! I especially like the one that just ends. Oh and the end that looks like 2 logs is another great feature. Seriously Phil I love it. Gary
Wow! Thank you Gary, for the best comment I've received on ANY of my videos! I feel like you truly understand what I was trying to do, here. It was kind of a gamble on this plum wood because I like it so much and didn't want to screw it up, but some how, it worked out in the end. Thank you again, Gary! You've made my day! Phil
Plum Crazy is an appropriate name for that creation. It sort of reminds me of the live edge bowl my grandparents would put out at the holidays to hold all the different nuts that were still in their shells. Fill that center with a variety of nuts and use the outer rings to keep the nutcrackers and pics to get into the shells. Regardless, there are no mistakes only experiments and learning. Thanks for not giving up on it and sticking with it. It looks great.
Phil, I am a novice turner with loads of sanding under my belt and I've turned several pieces like your "bad dream" and I use the pads wrapped around a 2 inch paint brush with great results and intact fingertips. I'm a big fan and have learned so much watching your videos. I also try to leave it as natural as possible. It took retirement to return to a passion I learned in high school and started my own little venture called nakid grandpa woodworks here in Virginia Beach.......turning and learning.....bill
Thanks Bill! I turned a similar bowl to this one and tried the sandpaper wrapped around the paint brush trick. I don't know what kind of pieces "like" this one you have turned but these live edge and natural edge pieces do not do well with that trick. If you have a nice even round bowl in the middle, it probably works great but on natural edge, not so much.

Sometimes I yell at you to do it differently:-). And when you finish, I love what you have chosen to do. This is a fantastic piece. I can see why it is still a favorite even four years after you created it.
You Sir are definitely a favorite and Your commentaries are fruitful and very humorous Love Your style and Your Beautiful work. I tip my hat to You Sir.
Hi Phil. I meant to mention in my last comment. In the past when I faced the dilemma of sanding in tight places that do not allow fingers, I have used rubber hose (1/4, 3/8 and 1/2) diameter with sand paper wrapped over one end and taped on the other. This rubber hose allows the sandpaper to move with the contour of the area to be sanded without damaging fingers. Mostly I use the clear hose that is a little firmer, but I also have use the more soft black rubber hose as well. Hope this helps, Jerry
I appreciate the help, Jerry. The problem is, I'm guessing you are talking about nice round bowls and your suggestions would be very helpful with those. I turned another somewhat similar bowl after this one. Lots of people had lots of suggestions on how to get in there and I tried some of them. None of them work on a bowl with natural edges. The irregular edges come around and just tear up whatever you are using. It just takes lots of hand sanding with the piece not spinning to solve the issue. 😊
I have to say Phil it's different but unique and the grain in that plum wood is beautiful so I have to say beauty and the beast!!! Happy turning to you Phil!👍
I like it. Looks like it would be a great mixed nut bowl. And the grooves outside the bowl for the nut shells. Would be awesome center piece for the holidays.
I liked your turning. I have a piece that is a lot like that and now I am going to try it. It is smaller but, I hope it turns out as well as yours. Thank you for your showing us it can be done. Nona

Hi Phil! This old video just popped up for me. I love it very much. One of the first large bowls I made was more or less like what you did but it was a combination chip and dip bowl. With the smaller bowl for dip emerging out of the chip bowl. The outer bowl was about 13 or 14 inches across and around 5 inches deep. The smaller bowl was around 4 inches across and deep enough that a little glass bowl could sit inside to hold dip. Wish I had remembered to take a picture before I gave it away. I think it was made from walnut. Anyway thanks for the video, I really do love the “bad dream” bowl! Cheers, Rick
This is an oldie, Rick. I made a similar piece to what you are describing and gave it to my daughter. I'm pleased she actually uses it! Thanks a lot, buddy! 😊
I don’t know what to call it but I envision the outer ring filled with large shrimp and the center with a nice cocktail sauce for them. Loved the piece it is definitely different. Glad to see you didn’t loose a finger too. 😀
Well Phil, you can't be the only odd one. Would you believe that when I look at it from the end of the 2 branches, I see a torso with the belly hollowed out for some type of snack food. Beautiful as always and plum is an amazingly beautiful wood.
You are not wrong, Paula! From that angle it does indeed look very much like you describe. I'm so glad you like it, it's my personal favorite. Thank you! 😊
I know this video is a couple years old, but I'm just now seeing it. I think it's super awesome & a beautiful piece of art! I love the more odd turnings & carvings. I really dig the finish too!
Great piece! Outside ring could gave dried flowers, the inside ring bite veggies to dip into a delicious sauce contained in a separate glass bowl so there is no interaction with the wood finish. 👍👍👍👍👍
Ya, I suppose that rescue shelters would be pretty picky. Maybe they could be composted. Here in Calgary the city picks up garden waste, tree trimmings, Christmas trees etc and I think all that goes through a chipper and gets composted. I'll have to check to see I suppose, but here in the City I dont have many options for disposing of large quantities of wood chips, we only get 1 recycle bin of stuff per week, and wood turning will certainly clog that up....
I'm glad you like it, Carol! And, thank you for spelling plum correctly. I misspelled it on the bottom and didn't catch it until I was taking pictures! Phil
Phil, you really did a great job on this creation. I love how you think out loud and work through your thought process. That is some really beautiful wood too. The way the dark and light grain just snapped when you put the sealer on. Really fine job sir! Nicely done, didn't look to easy either.
Glad you stuck with it. You ended up with a pretty amazing piece. Just a thought on sanding the groves. Years ago when I did auto body work, we would wrap the sandpaper around various sizes of rubber hose to sand narrower concave areas. Anyway thanks for a very interesting video.
This is so good to hear, Johnnie! I just never know how a piece will go over until I post it and then, sometimes, it's too late! Thank you for your great comment! Phil
Odd is good! I’m always looking for the unusual. The character and the imagination that the odd has is called thinking outside the box. I like it it is one of a kind and just like the little bowl I would take it too if I could.
Hey I have to say that this a most unusual piece but, I love it. It's great that you did not feel that you had turn the outside of the piece, what you have done by leaving it is to actually enhance the beauty of the bowl. The natural bark edges make a huge contribution to the finished bowl & enhance it. I believe the bowl would not have the same appeal if just left purely with the overall shape & the grain. This shape needs the third element in this instance. Beautiful piece of turning with a great finish. Again your commentary during production was brilliant, as usual so thanks a heap. Don
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I just read the comment from Gary & he is absolutely correct. As you know, I was a Senior Master of Art in South Australia & this would hold its head high anywhere as a pure piece of Art. Who cares if it does not conform to some preconception as a utilitarian bowl, it is a bowl but more than that it is a piece of Art in its own right. Congratulations Phil, well done. Don

I know this video is a couple years old, but I'm just now seeing it. I think it's super awesome & a beautiful piece of art! I love the more odd turnings & carvings. I really dig the finish too!
This is my all time favorite turning, Jessee. I'm so glad you like it, too! 😊
Great piece! Outside ring could gave dried flowers, the inside ring bite veggies to dip into a delicious sauce contained in a separate glass bowl so there is no interaction with the wood finish. 👍👍👍👍👍
Sounds great, Vicki! 😊
Perfect for a dry flower display
Great idea, David, thank you!
Phil
Phil, two things you are pretty good and so funny , i love watching your projects thanks Phil. Mario from Quebec Canada
Cool, thanks, Mario! 😀
Wow ... that is actually a very cool and interesting design!!
My all time favorite, Geoff! 😊
Phil, I absolutely love what came out of it! That’s where the fun is...turning...and not being sure what will be the final outcome. Great job Phil.
I'm so glad to hear this, Bob! You just never know. Thank you for your great comment!
Phil
Phil, you’re always saying you are not an artist, but this piece is so “artistic”. Thanks for showing how to let go and be creative.
Russ
If there is an exception to the not an artist claim, Russ, this is it. I did dream this one up, myself. Thank you!
Phil
Ya, I suppose that rescue shelters would be pretty picky. Maybe they could be composted. Here in Calgary the city picks up garden waste, tree trimmings, Christmas trees etc and I think all that goes through a chipper and gets composted. I'll have to check to see I suppose, but here in the City I dont have many options for disposing of large quantities of wood chips, we only get 1 recycle bin of stuff per week, and wood turning will certainly clog that up....
Another master piece!! I love the grain on bother sides! It was in there just waiting for you to bring it out! Thanks for sharing.
😊
Your dream is anything but bad. It is actually very attractive. You have succeed to achieve a very appealing piece once again.
Thank you, Jaquith! This is my all time favorite turning. 😀
Truly delightful. I really like your Bad Dream bowl. Keep up the great work
It's my all time favorite, Alan, I'm glad you like it, too! 😊
I like it...it is definitely unique...the plum wood is gorgeous!
I'm glad you like it, Carol! And, thank you for spelling plum correctly. I misspelled it on the bottom and didn't catch it until I was taking pictures!
Phil
I've only been turning a few months, and I love your videos. I've learned so much. This is truly a work of art; I love it.
This is my current favorite, Garry. I'm so glad you like it, too! Thank you!
Phil
Looks almost like an Eye or maybe an ash tray. Nice job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Phil, you really did a great job on this creation. I love how you think out loud and work through your thought process. That is some really beautiful wood too. The way the dark and light grain just snapped when you put the sealer on. Really fine job sir! Nicely done, didn't look to easy either.
Awesome! Thank you, Jason! 😊
Im loving that peice! Keep up with the bad dreams
I'm so glad, Robert, thank you! 😊
Glad you stuck with it. You ended up with a pretty amazing piece. Just a thought on sanding the groves. Years ago when I did auto body work, we would wrap the sandpaper around various sizes of rubber hose to sand narrower concave areas. Anyway thanks for a very interesting video.
That's a really great idea, Duane, thank you! And, thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated!
Phil
Pritty cool. Make a nice dish for nuts for the holidays
Thank you, David, for taking your time to watch and comment!
Phil
Strangely brilliant, well done, great job 😜👏
I'm so glad you like it, Steve! It is my current favorite. Thank you!
Phil
Cheers Phil
Really like that you are thinking " outside the box" & doing more unusual design pieces. That's not a bad dream; it's beautiful.
This is so good to hear, Johnnie! I just never know how a piece will go over until I post it and then, sometimes, it's too late! Thank you for your great comment!
Phil
You are a funny man the best laughter yet, i personally like it. Something different
Haha, thanks, Rick, I appreciate that! 😊
Beautiful job. It looks fantastic....I like it.
Thank you, 196LT! It is my current favorite.
Phil
That's unique and beautiful.
My all time favorite, Ted, I'm glad you like it, too! 😊
Odd is good! I’m always looking for the unusual. The character and the imagination that the odd has is called thinking outside the box. I like it it is one of a kind and just like the little bowl I would take it too if I could.
This one is never leaving here, as long as I'm alive, anyway. It is my all time favorite turning. Glad you like it, too, Lynda, thanks! 😊
It is one of a kind!! Very different. That's what I like. Plus I found a sanding sealer made by midwax. Haven't tried it yet
This is my all time favorite piece, Bryan. I'm glad you like it, too! 😊
Vielen Dank, Thomas! Beste Wünsche in Ihren Wendungen.
Phil
I like it. It’s unique for sure.
I'm really glad you like this one, Jim! Thank you for taking your time to tell me!
Phil
Hey I have to say that this a most unusual piece but, I love it. It's great that you did not feel that you had turn the outside of the piece, what you have done by leaving it is to actually enhance the beauty of the bowl. The natural bark edges make a huge contribution to the finished bowl & enhance it. I believe the bowl would not have the same appeal if just left purely with the overall shape & the grain. This shape needs the third element in this instance. Beautiful piece of turning with a great finish. Again your commentary during production was brilliant, as usual so thanks a heap. Don
This is my all time favorite piece, Don. I'm glad you love it, too!
Don
Beautiful bowl, Phil. I love it 💞
Thank you so much, Georgina! 😊
Interesting piece of work. It's extraordinary I like different looks. Not Barbie doll style stuff,
My all time favorite piece, Judith. I'm glad you like it, too. Thank you! 😊
it would be nice if all bad dreams ended up that nice. Awesome job.
So glad you like it, David! Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated!
Phil
David Nelson you are a leader, and we all are privileged to follow. The Pied Piper of unique!
Very COOL piece. In my head I kept saying "Emerging Bowl". You do a great job! Love the videos and they are helping me learn.
Thank you, Robbie! This is my favorite piece I've ever turned. So glad you are watching and commenting!
Phil
Even when you don't know what to do with a piece, Experimenting can be fun. You get to use your creative side. You have never let me down that your piece would turn out to be specular, you dint let me down again. You always come up with the right decisions, even if you cant hear me yelling at you ??????? (no Shure if I am yelling loud enough) to make that move. Phil the magician rides again. Really great piece. KEEP ON TUNING
My all time favorite turning, Howard! Thank you! 😊
