- A piano has 12 notes. Roland Lamb, the CEO of technology startup Roli, wanted more options. "As a keyboard player, I love the piano and think it's the most logical instrument. But I was always interested in extending its power. I'd play gigs and be slightly envious of the musicians who could bend the pitch and volume and timbre of the notes -- guitar players can be very expressive with just a few notes. You can't do that with a piano." So three years ago, he set out to create one that could. The result is the Seaboard, a touch-sensitive, silicone keyboard that lets you slide between, bend and vibrate notes. It is, he says, "a new instrument that gets you one step closer to the experience of touching sound."

Instead of appreciating the sounds this can make people bitch about how it doesn't sound like another instrument..
Was just thinking the same thing.
Me too - emulating a guitar with a MIDI keyboard seems like such a bad idea. It sounds terrible for that reason. Synth sounds and pads, strings, vibes, will sound much better, IMO.
Chopin's Nocturne in C Sharp Minor :) Great, great piece of music
FINALLY, a video that really HIGHLIGHTS this thing...thank you
Fantastically innovative instrument!
Probably an important step. Now that skilled players know the advantages of this soft and dynamic input we need to take the next step and change the key layout to isomorphic like the terpstra or chromatone design.
Oh this is very nice! And I love the fact this is just something revolutionary in instruments!
Very interesting! Great playing!
This is awesome!
This is fricken amazing it's even imitating the chord slides of the acoustic guitar.
nice work
The creative possibilities with an instrument (or controller if you will) are mind boggling. I'm inspired. Anyone who doesn't 'get' it, might just be lacking imagination.
Exactly. The instrument is so new that people will have to wrap their heads around the possibilities. This instrument goes far beyond a mere keyboard into territory that no-one has gone before. I can't wait for mine to be built and arrive on my doorstep.
This is simply another evolutionary step in the world of synthetizers.
Good tool for modulation and legato.
A good performance with a good instrument.
Frederick Chopin Nocturn number 20 in C sharp minor
Хочется полную версию)) Очень красиво исполнино....
What kind of paint did you use to spray the white notes ? Does it affect the touch and sound ? Thanks ...
What I don't understand is why everyone has something bad to say about this. Weather it be a "fake" sounding midi keyboard not. Music is music and this sounds amazing. Get your head out of your ass people.
how did he do the noise of dragging your finger over the string at 0:19 ???
Strange
ch ui pas persuadé que ce soit top. ça fait un moment que ces claviers sont sortis et je n' en ai jamais vu en concert
cool
How do you get the sounds at 0:15, the guitar string slides?
I think it's done with Lift, one of the five Seaboard's dimension ou touch : Strike, Press, Glide, Slide and Lift .
Lift is actually the speed of release of a keywave.

What's this song? It sounds good!
true, sound and video are not in sync, but one must be blind not to see the potential of this instrument...
Looks like he painted the seaboards the original piano colors.
The instrument accomplishes slides by rolling your fingers from one key to the next.
oh man, blue balls with the early ending.
Its already invented
👍👍👍😎👏👏👏
how is this song called?
Gildardo Navarro probably a chopin piece,. hope that lightens your search.. btw if you found it pls tel me
+Gildardo Navarro Yeah this is a Chopin piece
Gildardo Navarro Chopin nocturne in c sharp minor, op.posth
thanka
Ah yes, the fleshlight: a truly beautiful instrument.
The seaboard is wondering but it sounds like he's running it out of Garageband or something... also, pretty sure it'd be impossible to play that nocturne like that on one guitar
+Marcus Wiles that's why he's playing it on a keyboard, jerk.
+Hi & Lo I'm just saying, why play a guitar sample if you're not going to play it like a guitar? I'm sure there are guitar transcriptions out there that he could've used
Get ayseen essen on this
I'm sorry, that's bollocks. In the quote he says you can't be as expressive on a piano by just playing less notes. Pretty sure you can. Some of the most beautiful scores are simple
If they wanna make this work they're going to need to improve the physical feedback that this thing provides to the fingers. Otherwise this is as fast and choppy as it's gonna get.
Meh, you can do vibrato on almost all decent synths and this much glissando/portamento is just not musical to my ear. I declare the instrument a gadget. Nicely played though, dues to the musician.
is it just me or does this seem to make the piano seem sexual
You can do it without all this electronic crap by adding a pedal that modifies string tension. I would rather see that on the market.
Did you see it now ? Lol
this makes me and chopin cringe!
schrecklich gespielt!
-.-
