Marco Parisi enthralls the audience at NAMM 2017 with this amazing performance of the late Prince's classic "Purple Rain".
Marco built the whole track from scratch by looping and layering each part using his Seaboard RISE and a BOSS RC-505.

This guy is single-handedly responsible for like 20% of sales... and roli KNOWS it
More than 20%...I bought the seaboard 2 because of Marco
i bought one because of this video also
I'm back here again because of him. Don't own one yet but in time
I’d say 50-60%
don't make the same error, you can buy one but not the presets and the looper@@ultrariz3000
The only one who truly understands how fucking awesome this is is the guy in the background with the afro. He gets it.
right on brother. right *uckin on.
I was watching him and I was thinking the exact same thing. He was under the spell!
Ricardo Lopes mn
bruh u real sweedish right now
Not everyone expresses themselves the same way.
I never thought I’d be emotionally moved by a squishy piano but here I am
2023, and this performance is still as beautiful as it is astonishing. Superb.
😅 still cranking this weekly sometimes daily...couple friends thought it was a concert when they heard it.
I'm back again myself

When a product demo goes into your music playlist.
Agreed, it's like magic.
Hotel Eden same
Absolutely 🙂
Stevie Nick's demos are her best work, better in most cases than Fleetwood Mac's finished production. Most are up on You Tube too. Look 'em up.
That’s what I thought about this rendition also,,,, shucks ,,, I love the video thou,,, stay well,,,
Hands down the best rendition of this song played on a single instrument ever, fight me…
i think you wont be proved wrong until humans will invent another instrument which is like 6 in one
@@9pitopo so true. With that six instrument being a triangle obviously.
Was about to throw down, but then I read your comment before that "fight me.." bit, and I 100% agree. You have my axe!
Exactly agreed
Nope. **fistbump**
The various loops and times are as follows:
2:58 Loop 1 - Guitar
3:47 Loop 2 - Piano
4:35 Loop 3 - Synth
5:23 Loop 4 - Bass
6:11 Loop 5 - Drums
7:15 Solo Guitar
A masterful tribute Marco. R.I.P. Prince.
10:00 - Outro
_You can't forget or neglect that soulful outro._

I know why you posted this...this video is 6 minutes too long! You could fall asleep in the first six minutes!
I think I've listened to this song over 50 times over the years, no exaggeration. I always come back to it when I need to recenter. Thank you Marco!
and its all done on a seaboard.
Only 50 lol
As a guitarist... HE'S TAKIN' EOUR JERRRRBS!!!

I've been playing guitar for 30 years and if I wasn't looking, I couldn't tell this wasn't played on a guitar. Closest to the real thing I've ever heard.
This also emulates other instruments and will eventually match their finesse. As I'm starting to play drums and I play guitar on/off, I'm wondering - why even bother?
This device with support/backing could replace an entire rooms of orchestrated instruments - what's the point in owning anything other than this one device?
As you stated; this is a very close sound to guitar and is likely to sound better with further developments. I'm actually not a supporter of this invention. I'd like to hear reasons as to why it's a good device, aside from 'it's cool'. (Thoughts, if you have them).
bmwd40
It's to offer a level of expressiveness no other keyboard can match. Any shift in finger position will change how it sounds, so you can add human imperfection on the fly to genres that don't normally have it, or near-perfectly emulate it into genres that do without having to have that instrument on hand.
As for your other point, it's all about preference; at least, off the top of my head. Obviously, a long-time guitar player will never use this to play their guitar pieces.
@@bmwd4000 This level of expressiveness played live with sounds that aren't based on a real instrument is otherwise impossible. I mean, except for other similar designs. These super expressive digital controllers are necessary for super expressive digital live performances.
Not supposed to be a copy. It is a tool.
@@bmwd4000 synthesized drums is still hit or miss IMO, even if you're playing samples. I'm not sure we're ready to replace those with a keyboard, even one as awesome as this.
I am convinced this is what dreams sound like.
Anybody else get chills when the bass comes in?
I don't care what anybody says...Purple Rain has to be one of the best songs ever written. There's so much freaking power and emotion in that song, if it's done right, it's unspeakable. Gotta admit, brought them tears a little...
YOu know I never cared about him back in the day; I was too damn busy working 80 hours a week to pay attention. But lately I'm thinking he was great. And furthermore I want to know what's in all those thousands of hours of recordings in his vaults.
Didn‘t like it back then, probably because I thought the singing was cheesy. But listening to it now, and without vocals, I gotta agree with you.
Journey - faithfully same song
@@Cadmium77 Me too, but 7years ago I saw him live. My wife has been a fan forever and I pony'ed up for 7th row at the L.A. forum to give her a good time.....That lil flit...excuse me that MOFO ROCKED my balls off!!! ABSOLUTELY THE BEST SHOW OF MY ENTIRE LIFE!
And I've seen the Crowes w&wo/ Jimmy page. Page & Plant. Coverdale Page. Guns n Roses, Rush. The Who, Pink Floyd, Van Halen w&wo Roth, Bonamassa w&wo/Jason Bohnam, and Soo many more....Robert Plant Manic Nirvana Tour was my first concert (my sister had to swear to my parents I would be ok, I was like 13yrs old!). Nope! None of them compared to Prince. Ultimate showman, ultimate rockstar, ultimate artist. If you missed out, I'm here to tell you that- you- missed- out. Don't let it happen again, you deserve better! Lol
@@Cadmium77 I want to add to that...I saw The John Butler Trio in San Diego and they made the concrete floor bounce and roll! What a show! I saw Marc Ford cry, I saw Taj Mahal wail and Derek Trucks blew up his amp 15 feet in front me. I saw B.B. King play so hard he broke 2 strings in one stroke. I saw Incubus, Rage Against The Machine, and Tool play louder than any other bands I've ever heard .... But I never danced until I was spent, I never screamed until my throat was sore, and then walked out a pure sweaty mess from any show....like I did that night at the L.A. Forum with Prince (who knew, I guess he did!). If I only had a time machine you'd be on the short list.
Check it...one regret...that I never saw him perform again....because I did once...and oh man!
Cool hair. He's like the Kenny G of the squishy-piano.
doctordave There it is: the new official name for this instrument!
Introducing: ROLI's new revolutionary instrument the squishy piano!
not sure, but this might be my favorite youtube comment of ALL TIME.
Haha squishy-piano made me laugh. I want to call it that now :)
doctordave Squishy piano. That made me laugh, and that's what I will call it. And it will be my squishy.
Lmao nice comment. 😂😂😂
When you wanted to play guitar, but your parents made you take piano lessons.
So you end up playing both.
Agreed, the playing at this device is more like as powerful electric piano not the guitar.
😂😂😂😂
Damn. He really honored Prince with this one. I almost cried...
I did

@@peterlouie2650 Me, too. It was amazing.
I did 😭😭☔☔☔
I did cry
Its been 6 years and Gerald from Hey Arnold in the crowd still sets the mood.
I always felt the underlying chord progression was the best part of the song. Prince’s version was a perfect classic pop/rock song and lives forever in that universe. But this arrangement highlights the inner beauty that was always there, and makes it into a classic itself. Two legends here - one who wrote it, and one who gave it a separate life. I am so grateful to have found this.
What a way to put it, man. All the best to you and everyone you know.
Perfect summary
👏
sometimes a certain chord progression can be played again and again adding layers upon layers. soooo satisfying
It's June 2022 and this is absolutely the best rendition I've ever heard. And I've listened to Prince since 1978. Absolutely beautiful 💜💜💜💜
You need to check out Cory Henry’s rn
You're Damn right Dude
It's January 2020, I am still yet to find a better cover...

I think theres no cover like this. I keep comin back too. What a heavenly harmony.

Not going to lie it sounded so damn good I cried a little. Prince was a large inspiration and to see this hardware and an amazingly talented musician behind it play it so damn well just brought tears of joy to my eyes!
SCshadowfox so did I

SCshadowfox couldn't agree more
Tears over here too. Outstanding!
same here , man..
Damn.. Was like "Oh nice little keyboard playing." Ready to move on.. but listened for a few more seconds, then a few more AND MORE. I got choked up and then so blown away. What a great way to demo this board and holy crap Marco... way to build that song. I think I upped the volume every time you added an instrument. Shit I miss Prince. Closed eyes & hit repeat. THX.
David Bock Prince was irreplaceable.
David Bock - percectly said !
Lol, not sure how many times I have closed my eyes listening to this, awesome!

If this doesn’t convince someone that the Seaboards are as expressive as any other instrument, nothing will. Long Live The King, Prince.
I always come back here to feel the emotion in a Prince song. Amazing.
Same here buddy.
That guitar solo just murdered it. Amazing.
20k likes?? Where are all the musicians? This demo is absolute insanity!
Guy with the Afro wearing the smoking jacket in the background is living in the moment entailing all emotions. He has no electronic devices that would take him away from this beautiful experience.
Literally come back every few days to watch this...

I've never played this for a musician that their jaw didn't drop open in amazement. Marco's performance is astonishing.
As a piano player myself, the Seaboard will dramatically enhance my musical capabilities. As for Marco, well done mate. As a lover of old school ballads, your rendition of Purple Rain made me all choked up and teary. Prince has been gone for a while now, but he is still sorely missed by many. Thank you so much for bringing his masterpiece back to life.
Someone help me find my jaw on the floor please. This has to be the best cover of anything ever made.
i think prince would even be impressed with that
Agreed this was an amazing and inspired performance to say the least. I think the great purple one would indeed be impressed and proud.
Beautifully choreographed...
I can't even picture the wonders he would play with such an instrument on his hands... Dear Lord.
Yeah he would be like what in God's name is he playing on lol.
Love the instrument. But it also reminded me how much of a genius songwriter Prince was. RIP

Roli really have invented something new here, they've done something that could change the music industry forever. I wish I could afford one. Thank you Roli for this video. Thank you Marco.
I feel like performances like this are what makes this product stand out. They really need to keep leaning in on this type of stuff.

This is incredible!!! What a performance!! Marco is one of a kind. Roli your lucky to have him on board
haha on board
Florian Schartner on SEAboard
I wish Prince himself could have seen this before he passed. He was such an innovator and an artist. I bet he would have loved this.
Every day I listen to it before falling asleep. Something fantastic
It's not every day that you get to see a new category of musical instrument. That is unlike anything I've ever seen or heard before. Absolutely brilliant.
HES A BEAST!!! I got chills man and if Prince was still alive he would have respected that tribute!!! Keep it up Marc. WOW!!!
So this is how music sounds in heaven.. fucking Amazing

This is the best Prince Tribute ever.....
Tears in my eyes.....every time.....
This is incredible. The Seaboard really takes musicianship to another level.
thank god for laptops and loopers
Years ago, there was (briefly) polyphonic aftertouch, that's a sad legal story, but the Seaboard is indeed a level up for the humble keyboard. Truly incredible.
Polyphonic Aftertouch was available more than "briefly" from several manufacturers, the biggest I can think of being Ensoniq... The only reasons it didn't catch on is because: 1. It was a bitch to implement back then, and 2. Today, 99.99795% of synth players will never actually need it...
Xam271 My old beloved FZ-1 sampler had it too loved that aspect...if not the 2MB sample memory:)
And the goddamn LCD backlight
That was so amazing. I literally felt that in my body, and it gave me chills.
This man single-handedly made the Seaboard impossible to get
Marco, we CRY. In this very moment, you ARE Prince! If one can say so. THANK YOU for this!

After seeing this video years ago, I've always wanted one! Talk about probably the most effective product demo EVER! It certainly helps that Marco Parisi is an incredible player. How brave would one need to be to tackle THIS legendary song at NAMM! No pressure, right? Just now, I found a ROLI Seaboard Rise 49 for a really good price. Rewatched this video again, and it's just a no-brainer to proceed!

This is literally the best 11 minutes of music I have ever experienced. Literal full body goosebumps even after listening multiple times.
Unbelievable
Mine are the first time I listened to Narayan by the Prodigy on a casette back in the 90ties, but this one definitely hits the spot as well!
Simply the best Prince tribute ever and it happened during a product demo! Parisi is not from this planet.
Marco is a consumate musician. Every label should be hiring him. Amazing
Man...I like Purple Rain, so I clicked the video.
But at the end I had all, goosebumps, tears in my eyes and a smile on my face. Beautiful!
Holy smokes... Forgot to breathe for a bit there. Fantastic artist on an amazing instrument.
Amazing how realistic the guitar solo sounds. I play keyboard and always wondered if it would be difficult to play one of these well. Fair play to this guy for balancing it on his freaking knee and making it look as effortlessly as sending a text message.
Absolutely unbelievable. Totally owned it.

Yes, I'm crying rn
This is the 2nd time I've watched this demo.... and managed not to get choked up this time! I swear to God that song needs to be in the friggin NATIONAL ARCHIVES WHY HAVEN'T THEY ADDED IT BY NOW?? It's one of the greatest songs IN HUMAN HISTORY... and this is the FIRST & ONLY time I've ever heard it done justice by someone who wasn't Prince. This kat didn't just play Prince's guitar riffs like most.... or the piano parts - like most... HE PLAYED THE WHOLE DAMN BAND... WITH ONE INSTRUMENT THAT IS NONE OF THE INSTRUMENTS WHICH WERE ACTUALLY USED TO MAKE THE SONG!! Just wayyyy too outrageous!!
UDATE!!!! I was SERIOUS about this song needing to be in the National Archives, and I was looking into how to make submissions for consideration. Guess what - IT ((IS)) IN THERE!!! YYAAAAYYYYYY....!!!!! 👏🏽😊👏🏽😊👏🏽😊... In fact, the album was 1999 but the listing only says (Purple Rain - Album). So I don't know if they're saying the (whole album) is in the archives or just the song, and they're saying it came OFF an album... or rather just a way of saying (this was not not a single, it was an album).... Not sure. But in truth, Prince deserves to have SEVERAL albums in there... (Musicology) being another one (whole album) and the single (If I Was Your Girlfriend)... that sh*t was INCREDIBLE!!! But at least he's in there.
STOP HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ MY PRINCE RAMBLINGS! 😇 ... I normally don't ramble on but I kinda had a pseudo-connection to Prince and I'm really not an emotional guy AT ALL. But I gotta say - It's still hard to listen to Michael & Prince's music now, because their music was so GOD-LIKE that it became a part of your soul once you connected to it!!
With them being gone now, it's like having a part of yourself... or rather - "myself" permanently cut off. Listening to their music is like looking at old photos when I still had that part attached. It's really difficult and was actually very upsetting for awhile. Took me almost a year to be able to listen to their music again.
WHY??? Well, back in 2016 I was writing a VERY DETAILED biography on Prince, which included a full timeline of all of his awards - year, song & album - his childhood, marriages, scandals, relationships, photos, videos.... a TON of data! It took LOTS of research and time to write & put it all together. I think I was working on it pretty heavy - DAILY - for maybe 2 or 3 months, so I had REALLY connected to Prince's energy & vibe and had tried to synch with that energy to do him justice! I was LITERALLY writing the final close-out for the bio... as I was writing my phone rang, and it was my Mom... (So hey did you hear Prince died?)... I was like .. (HUH??? NAHHHH... NO WAYYYY!!! GET OUT, Where did you get that from?) She said.. (It was just on TV!) I said... (Nahhh.... I haven't heard about that, hang on... people always talking about somebody died smh... lemme look this BS up!... Sigh... People always talking sh*t!) 🙄 So I started searching online - in denial - but starting to feel a dead knot in my stomach - which was weird! I would have never expected to feel that from a celebrity dying.
So I looked on CNN, and there it was... (PRINCE FOUND DEAD AT 57!)... I was like... (WHAT?!?!?!.. ARE THEY SERIOUS???? ... WHAT THE FU**?!?!... BUT HOW.. 😧 WHAT HAPPENED???)
I felt like Mike Tyson had punched me in the chest - because I was still energetically connected!! Did anyone watch Matrix? Remember when they said (You can't simply "UNPLUG" them while they're in the program, it will mess them up - possibly kill them!) Well.. I didn't feel like I was gonna DIE or anything that dramatic, but it was REALLY disorienting - like being in a VR game, then somebody just SNATCHES your goggles off!! It's like a DROP - One minute you're looking at an alien landscape staring at a waterfall across a canyon.... then BAM!!! You're in your living room staring at a small room! THAT'S what it felt like. Had I found out a month or 2 later it wouldn't have hit like that because I woulda already been "unplugged". So when I first saw this video, it took me back to that day. smh... I din't cry and all that, but I just felt (off-balance & disconnected) for MONTHS afterwards. I still feel it a little if I listen to his music, but at least I CAN listen to it again now.
I'm telling you - your (BIO-ENERGY) is nothing to play with! Some people don't even believe it exists - until they meet "TWINS" who are so connected they know what the other is thinking, doing & feeling even tho the other twin is miles away. Of course Prince didn't even know I existed lol... But that doesn't stop people from connecting to his energy... or YOURS!!
There's people looking up to you, connected to you, and enjoying your energy and your work that you don't even know exist - like people at your job, or at a store you go to a lot.
If they found out something happened to you - they would be CRUSHED!! Meanwhile, you never knew they were alive. ...That's all. Thanks to all who read all of that. 🙂
Absolutely Epic performance. I am sure Prince was looking down and loving that.
this is one of my all time favorite songs....WOW! so beautifully expressed in this performance!
Well, after Prince ...the best Purple Rain guitar solo ever! 👏👏👏
