    I have to add....if Jada was confident enough to NOT wear a wig to the biggest night in Hollywood, why was she not confident enough to say, "yeah! G.I. Jane is a badass and I could most definitely pull it off!" She chose to sit in the front row BALD, chose to air her ENTANGLEMENT, but can't take a joke and turn it into a compliment with even the nod of her head. She could have owned that moment. But then, we wouldn't have this great comedy special by Chris.

    • @peakydene1943
      @peakydene1943 Год назад +73

      Jada could have worn a wig, but I have a feeling that she decided to go bald that night, to one of the most glamorous and televised events, just to thumb her nose at people, just daring someone to say something so she could act offended. And she got her wish. Someone did say something and she got the attention she was wanting. And Will and Chris had to pay the price, as well as everyone else that night who were harmed.

    "Don't fight in front of white people" was about Will Smith undoing everything he could have accomplished that night. To go from "Oscars so white" to Smith winning best actor should have been an amazing cultural moment. Smith ruined that. Jada was telling Rock he should boycott a previous Oscars due to lack of representation and this is how her husband represents at the Oscars! That night, it was Rock who was representing his race with exceptional professionalism.

      Jada caused the whole thing! Smith laughed at Rock's joke & ONLY after seeing Jada's face did he go nuts.
      WHY? Because she's a narcissist who couldn't stand Will winning a Oscar, & she successfully ruined his night. Also, Smith is trauma bonded to Jada after 20yrs of marriage. I'm a therapist, & there seems to be a lack of decent one's in Hollywood. I spotted this a mile away. Much ❤️ All

    To me, it looked like he was almost going to cry (from relief, not sadness) shortly after he threw the mic down, and was holding it in by pressing his lips together. I can't explain the facial expression but it looked more like he felt relief at finally telling his side of the story, getting some physical aggression out on the mic, as well as pride at being accepted and cheered by the audience.

  • @RoryMitchell00
    @RoryMitchell00 Год назад +71

    One thing I'm seeing in Chris right after the mic "slam" - that wasn't touched upon in your great discussion - is a _significant_ amount of vulnerability. The best frame of it is at the 30:58 mark of the video. Chris has wide eyes, his lips are compressed, but he looks like he is on the verge of tears as he scans the audience for any support/help. It stands to reason that there would be a very strong welling of emotions at the end of this huge event, and because of the positioning of his arms (hanging limply at his sides, in a "defenseless" posture), it really feels like he is very much needing approval for what he has just exposed of himself. He finally allowed himself to open up about his private feelings, and to experience and show all his anger publicly for the world to see (and judge!), and for a few seconds after that moment he is uncertain and very, very vulnerable. Then the applause from the audience comes and rewards him in taking what is a very big risk, and we see the wide stance and grandiose posture from him.
    Great video, and I learned a lot from Nate and David, and from yourself as well Spidey, as always! Thanks so much!

    After the mic throw, I thought I caught a brief glimpse of sadness or hurt. Sadness or hurtfulness to be publicly slapped in front of a HUGE audience by someone he loved and respected, sadness that he had to defend himself and be hurtful to the "friend" that he loved and respected. I also felt that he was showing his audience how grateful he was for their love and support after what he experienced.

      Beautifully interpreted Vivi, i also felt his deep sadness and disappointment at that moment as well and it was heartbreaking because i know how it feels to sometimes look up to someone and trust in their goodness and it turns out to mostly be a figment of imagination. Some people are saying he served revenge not justice but i disagree. That man waited a whole year after getting slapped in front of Millions internationally, and then chose to speak his peace instead of raise his hand back in a heated moment or file a lawsuit that would have definitely won Chris has an admirable amount of patience and self control, which is an attribute apparently Will completely lacks. Also think about who made a better example overall the man who tried to humiliate another fellow comedian and man while he’s working in front of millions of people or the man who takes the higher road. Chris seems to have felt the need to defend himself mostly in-front of the black community so they understand why he waited, he wanted to be known as wise and classy not irrational and insecure, he spoke from the heart and everything he said was fact, i expected way more embellishments in the script but there was a minimal amount of that and instead he used words like bullets!
      This is why i was interested seeing the Eminem reference because that’s what he does as well! He used words and fact to eliminate the threat over his identity and manhood.

    I am so glad you did a Part 2 and included these guests.
    One of the things that I never understood, when people talk about the Oscar incident, is how Chris will have to live with this for the rest of his life. Jim Carrey said he would have sued Smith because, “…that video is going to be there forever. It going to be ubiquitous.”. To me, it’s a blight on Will Smith’s reputation and career, not Chris Rock’s. Again, I didn’t understand how it looked bad for Chris.
    When Nate said it was an insult because he was slapped, not punched (B-slapped, if you will), then I finally got it. It wasn’t just being attacked; it was the type of attack. Maybe I’m just slow. Maybe it’s because I’m female, but I never thought of it as an insult.💡

    One thing I would add about how he looked after slamming the mic: that look on his face reminds me of performers at a rock concert. Think about it. You get someone pouring their heart out for an hour or two, examining topics like heartbreak, disillusionment, suicide, abuse, and transforming it into art, in a way that they can share with the world but only they can fully comprehend it from their own experiences. When the last notes of the final song are played, no matter how loud the crowd is cheering, they are still feeling everything from the last two hours of playing. It's an intense feeling, and it doesn't disappear right away. Chris Rock has the same look on his face as Trent Reznor at the end of the And All That Could Have Been DVD by Nine Inch Nails, that look of going through hell and seeing yourself on the other side, alive.
    Speaking of music, the term you were looking for in regards to the volume of the mic hit was "compression." It gets used a lot in music to help keep volume levels consistent. I don't know how often it gets used for stand-up comedy, but I imagine there are a lot of comics who would like using it, depending on how they deliver their routines (think someone like Lewis Black, who can speak calmly & quietly one second, and yell at the top of his lungs the next). If Chris had his sound team using compression, then that would explain why slamming the mic on the stage didn't make the sound suddenly spike or startle the crowd

    Hi Spidey! Thank you so much for inviting Nate to give cultural insights. He expresses things in such a poignant way that I hope I can communicate in one day.
    I just want to say something that Nate briefly touched on. I was talking to my sister about this yesterday. Black culture largely includes joking about people. That's why there's shows like "Roast me" on All Def Digital, or how whenever a bunch of black children or comedians get in a room it can turn into a roast really fast. It happens at family reunions, schools, hangout sessions. It's just part of the culture, at least where I'm from. And people don't get hurt about it usually! Because black pain is usually processed through black comedy bc we laugh about the things that hurt to make it hurt less. The GI Jane joke didn't push the envelope for me, as a black woman, and the environment for it made sense, it was time to roast the audience at the Oscars. I understand that it hurt some people, but that was just my perspective of it.

    • @Swiergotka78
      @Swiergotka78 Год назад +1

      It's a thing of perspective and context, right? I'm from Central Europe and slapping a man in that situation would've been seen around here as well... maybe not appropriate but still understandable or mildly too much, and Chris' joke would have been seen as offensive and asking for trouble. But there are other aspects to it - what's the relationship between Chris Rock and the Smiths, the whole infidelity thing, it's the Oscars, Will Smith on edge and unhinged about something else entirely... Like it's one thing but so many layers to it. I'm honestly surprised this kind of humor is typical for the black community, which due to my geographics I know little to nothing about. It's an important aspect I totally missed!

      I challenge you to state another appearance joke made by a host of a nominee’s spouse. I’ll wait. We are not privy to these former friends’ previous interactions. I believe it wasn’t the first time Will asked Chris to lay off his wife. And I totally agree with your explanation about Roast behavior in black culture. Let’s talk about boundaries of said culture; because there are some. And I would argue appearance jokes of a spouse in front of said spouse is one of them. Clearly, Chris stepped across a boundary and got slapped. And I have to point out that the Oscar’s is NOT the place for black roast me sessions. Chris said it best when he said “don’t fight in front if the white people”. It was an inappropriate.

    • @GmmBeast
      @GmmBeast Год назад +3

      The GI Jane joke wasn't about being black though. It was about her alopecia. So you can't say it didn't push the envelope for you unless you yourself go through something like that. I don't personally think it's appropriate to joke about someone's appearance, especially something that can't be cured or helped. However, like they said in the video, if you don't like a joke you have every right to disagree with it, but to respond with violence is a huge no-no.

    • @Rae777
      @Rae777 Год назад +4

      @@cecisworld0909 I think your perspective is fair. There's an added cultural element to it that was discussed here, whether it was inappropriate to you even with that cultural element is up to you. I have seen roasts in many environments and the boundaries are different in all of them. Which is why I specified that it didn't push the envelope for me. I also just didn't see the GI Jane joke as insulting, apparently Jada did along with many other people. I can understand why other people have that perspective, I just don't share it.

      @@GmmBeast how do you know that the joke was about? Everyone is stating they don’t understand the violence response. And I believe they never will. We called the joking playing the dozens where I’m from. And one unwritten rule is NOT to tell a personal joke about someone’s relative that is present. Jada was present. Another rule is to not tell offensive jokes about a family members appearance that can’t be helped. Chris/GotBitchSlapped/Rock did a whole movie about black hair and he understood how low his joke was and he also understood that nonblack people would not understand how gutter the joke was. It’s hard to explain but it’s like Chris/GotBitchSlapped/Rock was calling her a bald headed bitch that needs to be taken down a couple pegs for how she emasculated Will on red table talk and tried to bully him out of an Oscar gig. It’s deep. Another rule of the dozens is you do not play it in front of white peoples. The Oscar’s was not an appropriate venue for such a guttersnipe joke. He started this debauchery. And Will responded, albeit wrongly with violence. It was mistake after mistake after mistake after mistake. That Got/Slapped/Chris started. The irony and selective outrage of it all. OMG

    The end of Chris' special I found the eye and body expressions to be more of a "I did it - I said it - I meant it -", but also still watching for an attack from the sidelines. Kind of a reliving of the moments that led him to this moment.

      That's even what I thought the asymmetrical mouth meant. I mirrored it and found myself saying, "I've done it, let's see if they tear me to shreds in the next second." Not contempt at all.
      Nor did I see the raised arms as grandiose. He waited to see the reaction, then responded to the audience support with "Hallelujah, they got it." That's why Rock mouthed "thank you." He looked grateful, not proud, to me.

      And what most people are missing is why the joke invoked such a violent response in the first place. The discussions are starting In The middle. Not the beginning. The joke was a deeply insensitive insult on black womens hair from a man who did a whole movie called “Good Hair”. He knew what he was doing and he knew the average white person and surface black person would not get the true meaning and intention of the verbal open handed slap he gave Jada. How dare she tell Him to boycott the Oscars when Will wasn’t nominated. How dare she emasculate Will on Red Table Talk and stay with him when his wife divorced him for infidelity and took half his money without telling one joke. He intended to put her Jada in her place. And he did it in front of her husband and found himself at the intersection of f-cked around and found out. Most people who are applauding Chris/GotBitchSlapped/Rock are missing or ignoring all the signs of inconsistencies of his actions. And the irony of many of his statements and actions. Which he is banking on. Selective outrage, indeed.

    I loved the discussion here with Nate regarding cultural context, and the reason for Chris Rock's: "Don't fight in front of white people" line. Especially the deep dive into the criticism from some news articles that Chris might have "continued the fight", and was somehow being hypocritical. I think you successfully argued against that assertion. I think it's important to add that Chris's words - comedic or not - are a *reasonable* response to what happened. It is _not_ unreasonable to point out that physical violence is unacceptable, or to explain why turning the other cheek is a useful and admirable tool to use, even when done in a comedic fashion. Those things need to be said and discussed, and good on Chris for saying them publicly.

    • @cecisworld0909

      But Chris didn’t turn the other cheek. The irony of him starting and ending with bullying Jada and Will is baffling.

    • @RoryMitchell00
      @RoryMitchell00 Год назад +3

      @@cecisworld0909 The definition of "turning the other cheek" you're using is virtually impossible for anyone to meet. A more reasonable definition includes all the ways Chris could have - but did *not* - try to even the score. Chris did not physically attack Will or Jada. He did not hire or manipulate others into physically hurting them. He did not try to use his power and influence in the industry to hurt Will or Jada's careers. He did not try to ruin their marriage in any of the vindictive ways that were available to him because of what happened.
      Instead of any one of a myriad of unreasonably petty and spiteful actions, he chose to turn the moment into a comedy routine, and even used that to add in interesting cultural commentary around perceptions of "Black violence". That is laudable and his response should be celebrated, as it is the very opposite of malice.
      Yes, he is angry, but that is not unreasonable, as he was wronged in a very public and humiliating fashion. I feel anger is a very misunderstood emotion, largely because too many people in this modern day and age say it is unacceptable, when it is in fact very natural as long as it can be used and channeled into something productive and mature, as Chris Rock demonstrates here.

      @@RoryMitchell00 Chris/GotBitchSlapped/Rock can NOT have selective outrage for a vial inappropriate joke he told to humiliate Jada during a show broadcasted in 20 different countries. That is all I am saying. Neither can he control the response. And we, the public, can not determine what was an appropriate action because Will, Jada, and Chris/GotBitchSlapped have history that we are not privy to. I believe Oscar night is not the first time Will has told Chris/GotBitchSlapped to lay off his wife. Wrong is wrong. And we can not start in the middle. Yes I agree. However, words here are used within the media/ entertainment communities. Everyone knows that Rock is a comedian and he is not trying to offend people when he tells his jokes. That’s the price that celebrities have to pay for being the focal point most of the time.

    • @RoryMitchell00
      @RoryMitchell00 Год назад +8

      Yes, you do make a good point about those specific situations being harmful. If I may, please allow me to offer a counterpoint though. In the case of verbal abuse within a domestic violence situation, or similarly in the case of unkind words from parents or another loved one, I would argue that it is not the words themselves that hurt, but the _withdrawal of love and support_ that is demonstrated by those words that causes so much damage to a person. If the exact same words said by a stranger have less - or no - impact on an individual, then it is the context that is important, and the argument that "words don't hurt" is still technically a strong position to take when judging personal interactions.

    • @thesnoopydance645

      Who's to say which is worse ? They are equally bad. A parent verbally abusing a child scars a child in a way they may never resolve. The child may question this their whole life " was it really so bad ?" Being physically abused by a spouse is so obviously wrong, yes. But i disagree that once the scars heal, its over. The body records the pain. Physical abuse stays with you, it gets buried deep, I know this first hand.

      I agree about the dv impact,
      but
      -a comedian performing is not a parent talking to a child
      -I experienced dv in my childhood, so I don't want to sound unsensitive, but as an adult I can choose which kind of comedy attend, so if some kind of humour hurts I don't go to the show, or I don't watch the video: I know it's not personal, I know that's a trigger for me, I can't appreciate but it's not 'wrong' or 'bad' by itself -it's simply not my cup of tea.
