- With war clouds gathering over Europe, the third FIFA World Cup™ took place against a bleak backdrop yet football - not least the flamboyantly skilful brand practised by Brazil - provided a shaft of sunshine for the French crowds during a 15-day festival from which Italy, the strongest and most consistent side, emerged as worthy winners.
Together with coach Vittorio Pozzo, there were four survivors in Italy's squad from their 1934 triumph and two of them, Giuseppe Meazza and Giovanni Ferrari, figured prominently alongside star striker Silvio Piola, scorer of two goals in the 4-2 Final win over Hungary that ensured the Azzurri became the first team to successfully defend the trophy.

The saddest thing for italians is that if the Grande Torino team didn't die in the plane crash, probably they would have won the 1950 and 1954 world cups. Grande Torino was the best football club in the 40s and that's a fact.

Excluding the 40s (WW2 stoppage) and the 50s (with the superga aircraft tragedy of "Grande Torino"), Italy is the only country in europe who played at least one final of a major tournament (EURO or WorldCup) in each and every decade.

Na copa da França de 38, a Itália já vinha de uma seleção campeã em seus domínios em 34, e tinha um elenco extraordinário com Orsini, Meazza, Piola e outros grandes jogadores. A final contra a Hungria coroou o bicampeonato da azzurra, que havia vencido a primeira grande seleção brasileira da história das copas na semifinal.

from today's perspective, the defenses here are awful - look from 00:45 on how before the goal is scored the attackers can do a lot of passes in the area without the defenders being able to do nothing (but I suppose it was far more fun to watch football then)
at 00:48 the attacker astonishingly instead of shooting and scoring a certain goal passes it to an attacker in a more distant position

Yeah, back in the 1930s most teams used a 1-2-7 formation (1 back, 2 midfields, 7 forwards). A formation that won't be seen anywhere today.

Te mencioné la final del 28 porque los jugadores que participaron en la final de 1928 y de 1930 tanto de Argentina como de Uruguay eran prácticamente los mismos, si les pudieron ganar una vez limpiamente obvio que le ganarían una segunda.
