- Garrincha was the inspiration for a Brazil side that flew across the Andes and mounted a successful defence of the Jules Rimet Cup in Chile in 1962.
Amarildo, Zito and Vava scored the goals that defeated Czechoslovakia in the Final but there was no question who was the real hero of A Seleção's second FIFA World Cup™ triumph.
"The most extraordinary right winger football has known" was French newspaper L'Equipe's description of Garrincha, the so-called 'Little bird' who was, at 25, at the very height of his powers.

Its so sad the world never got to see Pele in his ABSOLUTE PRIME on the world stage. But credit to Garrincha for taking the mantle and leading the Selecao to glory

Garrincha was in the national team even before nobody knows who was Pelé. Garrincha was touring Europe in 1955-1956 when Pelé had only 14 years old. Garrincha was champion was well in 1958. How he took Pele's mantle? I think its other way around.

A lot of folks don't realise how many maestros played in this Brazilian side, from strike to midfield to defense.. Only time Brazil won two consecutive world cups, '58 & '62 and with several players in both teams

Arguably the best of Brazil's five World Cup winning teams in my personal opinion.
The 1962 World Cup winning team was captained by Mauro who was not in the 1958 team but by then had already joined Santos FC.
Remember it was not easy for any country to retain the Jules Rimet trophy.The last country to achieve that feat was Italy who won the World Cup in 1934 and 1938.
But in 1962 Brazil achieved that feat by beating Czechoslovakia 3-1 to retain the title.
Except for Amarildo,Zozimo and Mauro the rest that triumphed in Chile was the core of the 1958 World Cup winning side.But Zozimo was not a newcomer to the Brazilian national team unlike Amarildo and Mauro for the former had toured together with Brazil in Europe in 1956.
They say that the 1970 World Cup winning side was par excellence and the greatest ever in Association football and even in World Cup history.
But this 1962 team was something special as inspired by the genius of Garrincha what with having to do without Pele the Selecao rained in goals from the quarter final,semi final and final stages.
And in 1962 Brazil had a new star Amarildo who scored vital goals for Brazil with Spain and also in the final where his brilliant executed goal cancelled out an early goal by Masopust.

@@aathamazhiqi3481 The great Pele then barely 21 had only one full match with Mexico in Brazil's opening match which was won 2-0.After that he got injured in Brazil's match with Czechoslovakia which ended 0-0.For the rest of the tournament Pele was just a spectator giving moral support to his team mates.
That's precisely why I don't mention much or give credit to Pele as it was his replacement Amarildo who shone for Brazil in the 1962 World Cup.

Viliam Schrojf had two bad blunders in the first (failing to cover his post) and third (failing to hang on to a soft ball) goals. However, let’s be honest, the Czechs would have neither made it to the second round, nor defeated Hungary in the quarters, nor overcome the Yugoslavs in the semis, as Schrojf made at least ten extremely difficult saves. To me, the goalie of that World Cup, without doubt.

@@zrouticek You are correct. The goalkeeper Viliam Schrojf was, until the final game, considered the best keeper of the tournament. The high sun has rendered him almost blind in the second and third goal. I had the honour to replace Schrojf in goal when he left the Australian club Slavia Port Melbourne during the season 1968/69 and had a conversation with him about that final game.

makes me realise how far football has come, the game moved very slow, and I know the ball, boots and kit were different back then, but still, this brazil team would get demolished by almost any modern team. (also that Czech keeper was a bit questionable)
Czechoslovak keeper really played badly that game, partly because 15 minutes before the kick off, the press somehow got into the Czechoslovak dressing room and they gave him the best GK of the torunament award, making him nervous and uncomortable. The manage rof Czechoslovakia was considering playing the backup keeper after seeing what the situation has done to Schrojf, but decided against it. What could've been if he started the backup one...

that's not entirely true, if you look at teams now like 2010 Spain, they wouldn't be able to do tiki taka on pitches like these, and would get demolished in this time, honestly, it goes both ways, but I think this Brazil team had more disadvantages, so I think they'd do well today

I think goalkeeping training and positioning had come a long way. But most importantly defensive lines were a wreck most of the time. U can clearly see some tactical ideas but rarely see counter tactical defense actions.
but field was way larger that era, so technique would often overcome tactic. FIFA reduced oficial field size two times after this clip. Doesn't seems to be important but it means more deffence and closed teams with less goals by games, tecnique not that important anymore lowering the bar, and also the attack needs to be more fast and intense now.
No doubt Brasil was a great side but that Czechoslovakian gk must have had nightmares for the rest of his life. Although he made some terrific saves, he made a mess of the first and third ones.
