    Been into watches for a long time have four pretty nice watches planet ocean 8500, ball hydrocarbon xv ceramic, hamilton x wind and a citizen skyhawk. While a couple of lads in work have rolexes they seem to think they know more about watches than me because they own a rolex. They are brainwashed by the brand. .

      Completely agree with you pal! I've got a 2018 Omega Seamaster 300m and this guy at work just bought a Rolex Sub. I feel sorry for him though cos pound for pound my Omega is a far better technical watch and half the price too!

    Great video from 2015.....I'm a late convert to this channel and now going through a back catalogue of videos. Rolex is a nice watch however, their prices are ridiculous. No way are they worth the money. That said, I purchased a new OP last year with the Explorer 3,6, 9 dial. It is super comfortable, understated, wears well with anything, yet equally practical and robust, in fact it's so versatile, it's hard to swap with any other watch I own!

    "Tested by money," very interesting thesis; just like - "if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power" (Robert Ingersoll). That said, I cannot afford a Roller, but I really don't think I'd buy one if I could. That's not me.
    I WOULD buy a Porsche, tho... and a airplane (both pre-owned).

    I totally get you about the almost cliche image of Rolex. For that reason I couldn't buy one. I have a gorgeous 20 yr old Raymond Weil (Parsifal power reserve) that I got from my wife as a wedding gift. At that time my first choice was an Omega but was just a little too pricey. A couple of years later I fitted a genuine calf leather strap clasp. I preferred that to the native stainless steel bracelet.
    I really like the current Seamaster diver, especially the white face model with the black rubber strap. I can afford now so who knows? Maybe I'll get that one in the near future. But after 2 decades I still adore my Raymond Weil watch.

    I own an Explorer 1 (39mm) that I bought at retail a couple of months ago. It’s a fantastic watch but even as the understated classic that it is, it’s not ‘interesting’ to me as a watch nerd, but I can’t justify selling it, such as the market is! I have always felt the fun lies not in a watch itself, but rather in the hope that one day another watch nerd will start a memorable conversation based on the piece on your wrist as a catalyst. This is where the Sinn EZM3 comes in. Material becomes experience.

    Good point and I agree with your thesis. That said, what I can safely tell you is that if I'm going to spend $5-6K on a watch, which is the going price for a used GMT or ceramic Sub, a Rolex wouldn't be my first choice. Or second. Or probably third. After that it gets tricky.
    Now if I had a multi-six figure salary and could happily buy whatever Tier 5 and 6 watches I wanted, would I buy a Rolex? Certainly. Probably a Sub or GMT, and maybe a Daytona as well. But again, the point is that it wouldn't be one of my top choices, but it would be in the next group down.

    • @JeffreyMcMahon

    Would I buy a Rolex? YUP! Not because i,'m a douchbag or a show off, but because I think they are a quality product, reliable and durable. However It would need to be an amazingly priced bargain to justify the choice, either a crazy deal (30%+ discount) or possibly used but in perfect shape. I like quality products,but I am a cheap bastard when it's time to put the money on the table!

    The biggest issue with Rolex is its hard to go back to mid tier brands (which I do love). After a couple decades of being a timepiece enthusiast, Rolex becomes the pinnacle as after all, most watches today are borrowed from their designs. BTW, Seiko is right behind Rolex for emotional connection in my book.

    I really enjoyed this. At first, i was ready to pummel a comment on the Rolex ideology of why someone would say, "i will never buy a rolex"...but you hit the nail on the head. There's a relativity to everything when it comes to wealth. Someone who makes $40k a year, would struggle to purchase a new rolex, when that money is better warranted somewhere else in their lives. Like rent, food, electricity, etc...But someone who makes $4 million a year, can afford to buy a rolex as a lesser earner buys a timex. It's just relative. But i agree, that the rolex (and mercedes) are those that reek of success. I own a Rolex DSSD DBlue (and a Panerai 233, as you mentioned the submersible) and i absolutely love it. It's not a super flashy watch, that is a show piece to impress my friends...I love it because of the quality of it and the fact that it's different than my other watches. I personally am not attracted to the submariners in gold because of that exact reason. it looks as if i'm trying to show off. But Rolex is a definite mega marketing corporation, and because of that, can demand high prices because people are willing to pay it. So long story short, great video...I appreciate that you understand that money can change the circumstances of what you say you will never own. Once tempted, we may have a different view...Thanks again for the vid.. ;-)

      What is price the entry level of a Rolex bought new from a Rolex authorized dealership in the USA. What kind of a Rolex can you get for $8,300 USD . I (unlike most people) like the looks of a Rolex aesthetically. I'm not a watch person. I own heavy gold jewelry in rings, pendants and chains anywhere from 9ct to 24ct in purity. How much is the cheapest Rolex heavily accented in 18ct gold ??

    You wouldn't buy a Rolex Jeff cos your a down to earth man who doesn't Bragg you say it as it is and I'm hooked pal! If you really wanted one you would of got yourself one by one but your like me you genuinely just don't want one! When I bought my Omega Seamaster 300m and it got released in Sept 2018 I was looking at the Rolex at the time as well and I thought to myself why do I want to be a sheep when all it says wearing a Rolex is Look At Me!! So I went for what still is today probably the best pound for pound watch for technical horology money can buy. No it doesn't say Rolex on my wrist, but it does say I'm wearing far better watch than a Sub full stop. Now I've had the Omega Ive just bought an INOX Victorinox mechanical piece and a Citizen Gmt Promaster from this year. The Omegas is going now pal I've done my watch bucket list I want watches I can justify for the price even though the Omega is a very very nice sorry but I would rather have £3k back in my account once I sell it Jeff.

    Hmmm interesting video from a guy with a sub $1000 seiko collection. I will agree with you in some aspects, but I don't think you know enough. I've had a 14060 sub and 16570 exp II. And both were sub $5k, the explorer was sub $4k. And personally I've had trouble finding good sports watches with in house movements with the refinement of Rolex under $5k. The only possible competitor would be omega, but I'd prefer not to wear a watch that pushed its popularity through mass advertising in fiction action movies.

    Mercedes are common place so is the Lexus, they aren't status symbols, people just lease them. I have a nice Rolex, and if you haven't had one then you are missing out. The bracelet is very comfortable compared to the other watches in my collection and ones that I have tried on at stores. They really aren't a status symbols anymore because of the large preowned and grey market. In the old days you had to pay full retail at a Rolex AD, now anyone can buy one. I buy mine preowned and save the money. They have been around a very long time and make a quality product, and I am not saying they are better than Omega, as I have a few of those as well, that is forTHOMGXX 100.

  • @philo2197

    I must say, I originally was never interested in watches and then started making some okay money and bought a $2,500 Rado because I had some friends who had rado’s. Then my taste evolved and I wanted a nicer sports watch and decided to go with Breitling because I didn’t want to be a “Rolex guy”. Then three years later my taste taste evolved and I decided to buy a Rolex gmt master II. Glad that I made the decision because the quality is much better. I even bought an all green submariner. But I, too, said in the past that I would never be a Rolex guy lol. I think I just don’t care anymore what somebody might think of me if they noticed I was wearing a Rolex. It is what it is and the looks and quality of the watch are superior and the way I feel wearing it as well.

  • @ccw1961

    I am a diver obsessive and have owned so many watches. About ten years after I became a watch nut I purchased a second-hand Sub 14060. Its a fab watch but to be honest I love my other and far cheaper watches. I wear it in circulation with my SKX, and various other watches and its ok. To be honest my Hamilton gets more wrist time. Money can never make you happy...so true! However, you can be bloody unhappy in comfort.

    • @JeffreyMcMahon
      @JeffreyMcMahon  6 лет назад

      Hard to say. Rolex and Mercedes are two of the greatest brands of all time in terms of recognition. No watch can match Rolex for brand recognition. For me, though, if I had the money, I'd get a Grand Seiko Diver, but if you're concerned with resale value Rolex is probably the best. I'm just not a Rolex guy. Though if forced, I would get a blue dial Deep Sea Dweller. Very nice watch.

I like being able to say I brought something that's worth $1000.00 for $500.00., as opposed to paying $20,000 for a watch that probably cost the manufacturer $500.00 or less to make, or $60,000 on a car that's less reliable than a Honda Civic. Well, do you hide the 3 Mac stations when company comes? You once made a video on your Mochamaster. With those Apple products and other products seen about your home in your videos, you DO have a status issue. Just admit it and move on to the Rolex. Number 1, it's an itch you will HAVE to scratch eventually, so just plan for it and do it. Number 2 (did I just say number 2?) Those 3 Macs equal an Explorer or a Milgauss or even a Datejust 41. The Explorer would look fantastic on your wrist and the 2012-2015 non-lume Arabics model can be had for about $5200-$6000 used, but in great shape. Yes, that's a lot of money for a watch, but ask anyone, and it's probably the only $5000 plus you will never regret spending. I enjoy watching your videos frequently (not sure how I missed this one) but rarely comment and want you to know this doesn't come from a 'Hater' place, rather it comes from my experience embracing my 80's coming of age and the whole 'More is More' thing with which it goes. I could never tell anyone I would never buy another Rolex, but I can tell you I will never buy my first Seiko.

    When I first got into watches, I thougt very similar about Rolex. But the more information I collected, about the brands, their history, the movements they use, the conglomerates they belong to, the more Rolex was grown on me. And so finaly the first decent watch I ever got was a Rolex. In my opinion there is no alternative to this watch, because everything else is either from lower quality or much more expensive.
    The comparison between watches and cars is nonsense. If you drive an expensive car, everybody - even the most stupid - will recognise it. Thats totally different to a wristwatch, because 99% of the people are not able to distinguish between a high end timepiece and a watch from a discounter.

    I think Trump got "tested" by the money drug. I don't know if he has a Rolex or not, but he's been seen wearing a Vacheron Constantine (I believe during his presidential inauguration, even) as well as a Patek Philippe, which are both on a rather good side of the taste spectrum. I think I saw him posing with a Trump branded watch, too. It might have been to attempt some commercial activity with it though, which I think is fair.

If i pay this amount of money for a watch i dont want to see It every day at someones wrist too! thats my opinión!

    Interesting comments which I broadly agree with but let me expand a little: It's never the watch, its the man, or woman that counts. This said, I agree, I think Rolex sends all the wrong signals on first meeting. 'Old money rich' simply don't wear them because they perceive them as brash and having no class. They would more likely be seen with Zenith or a Lange & Sohne, and not new, probably given on graduation or handed down and beautifully maintained .
    Rolex tend attract those with new money or those who think they are a classy watch and they need to convey success.
    IMHO the simple fact is that a Rolex has the opposite effect on me. its a shame really because the original submariner or Mil-sub was an out and out tool watch. The same can be said of cars homes holidays clothes etc. I own a nice IWC pilot watch, its not cheap, however its discreet and I have never had a comment about my watch, its effectively invisible. Great! It's a watch for goodness sake, it tells the time...thats it! I appreciate its simple elegance and that it gains only a second a week, but it does it quietly, without fuss or fanfare. My second watch is a SKX007 Seiko Diver...had it 20 years, never missed a beat. Minimal cost when new and has had far more positive comments. The entry level Seiko diver, now there's a watch with real hard earned street cred.
    I guess my view is buy a watch because you like it, one that matches. I could afford a new Rolex and can confirm that it would be the very last thing I would do with my money, directly because of perception and the ridiculous cost they ask. Beautifully made...yes! In company that will never be able to afford one you look arrogant and big headed. in company that can afford them, you look as if you simply have no imagination and are obviously trying to be something you are not. Poor old Rolex! They are the on-going victim of their own success. If you want a real diver from the company that set the standard, get a Seiko diver....they really invented the true spec for a dive watch we see today and you can get a great movement in the Scuba 200 meter (6r15) for a lot less than a thousand dollars. far more street cred and will last a lifetime. Job done!

    I respect your views Jeff, but I am a dedicated Rollie and the proud owner of a Ceramic sub and is now looking at a Daytona. I don't think that makes me hollow, or a troglodyte. It's quality and craftsmanship. Sorry man I think its he who doth protest to much.

      +michael ellliot I don't call Rolex owners hollow, only Rolex fanboys who don't know anything about watches. A lot of Rolex owners read my Channel and they know their watches. I respect them. In fact, I'd love to own a blue dial Deep Sea Dweller 44mm.

      +michael ellliot The quality of a Rolex is not even close to being commensurate with its price...and plenty of other companies make very fine watches at a fraction of the price. The vast majority of the Rolex price is simply mark up. If overpaying makes you feel special then fine, but do not try to justify the price based on quality.

    This guy can talk! He’s right. Once you get money by definition you become a douchebag. Once you are a douchebag you buy the Rolex. It can also work in reverse. You buy the Rolex (on credit), which makes you a douchebag. But you are the kind of douchebag that then attracts money because you appear to be successful.

    I think paying 8000$+ for omega planet ocean chronograph doesn't make You any less materialistic than buying a rolex deep sea blue face. They both retail for pretty much the same and are worn by both pricks and nice/humble succesful people. You take Sudaneese or Ehiopian child who only wants to be able to eat healthy and ask him who is cooler! Rolex or Omega owner? You can talk to him about movements and titanium bezels and whatever, but I would bet those 8k that He would look at You and say You're both absolutely nuts paying that kinda money on a watch that only tells time. Let me get this clear! You don't buy luxury products because You need them, You buy them because someone is trying to bullshit You into thinking You will feel better when You own them! Rolex, Omega, whatever... I am not rich and maybe I would (probably) buy either of the two if I was, or both, but I wouldn't consider myself any cooler for buying Panerai or Omega and not Rolex. In the end of a day both brands are overprized (its maximum 400$ to produce a stainless steel watch like Omega or Rolex... Yes guys! thats true! and don't tell me about a cost of advertising an luxury show rooms in posh places, its not a real value of production...)

      MattUKLTD , you are absolutely right! All of these overpriced brands are able to sell their products, just because of existance of materialistic and greedy people. In thr end these products are just timetellers. Yes I am fascinated by watches, but never will spend so much money even if I am billionaire. Would donate these money instead of spending it for luxury stuffs.

      datsunmadman My ND Sub rarely gets noticed either. I've had a few people comment on it, but people who don't know watch don't really notice. I wanted an Omega Seamaster (which I will get in blue eventually, I reserved one at my AD), but once I had the Rolex on the wrist at the AD, I just couldn't put it back. I became like smeagol. I justified the 7,500 USD by being my 40th years anniversary present (9 months in advance), as I was broke 10 years ago and now made it, so yes, it's also a sign of success to me, like Jeffrey said, but it's for me, not for others. It is a mix of everything. I can even fall asleep listening to the movement, will look at it while driving etc. So, to me, the extra cost was worth it.

    • @JeffreyMcMahon
      @JeffreyMcMahon  9 лет назад

      If no one notices it, I suppose it isn't fulfilling its role as power jewelry though for you the Rolex is a sign of a positive transition more than a status symbol.

    • @BrawndoQC
      @BrawndoQC 9 лет назад

      Jeffrey McMahon Perhaps it gets noticed more than I think, but people do not comment on it. Yes, the piece is for me, I don't go around drinking with my left harm or showing it off. It's a part of me, I'm wearing the watch, the watch isn't wearing me. That's the magic of having so many pieces to choose from, everyone can find one that fit them. I don't live* in the USA though, perhaps that's part of the culture when I am currently living. When I travel to USA people tend to notice my stuff more (Shoes, wallet etc)
