- Vladimir Salnikov was unbeaten in this race between 1977 and early 1986. He had broken the 15-minute barrier at the 1980 Olympics, and was still the only swimmer under the barrier, having bettered it four times, with three world records. But by 1988 he was far from the swimmer he had once been. He had placed fourth in this event at the 1986 Worlds, won by West Germany’s Rainer Henkel, and had not qualified for the final of the 1987 Europeans. The Soviet swim coaches did not choose him for the 1988 Olympic team, but the Soviet Minister of Sport intervened and Salnikov was placed on the team, and he pushed his training in an attempt to regain his old form.
In the final Salnikov swam behind American Matt Cetlinski for the first 600 metres, pulling slightly ahead at 700. West German Stefan Pfeiffer moved into second at 950 metres, as Salnikov continued to increase his lead, and Cetlinski dropped back to third. Just before 1,400 m the 400 gold medalist, Uwe Daßler of the GDR, caught Cetlinski. Salnikov continued to power ahead until the final 100, when Pfeiffer closed slightly. But it was not enough as Salnikov won his second gold medal in the event, with Pfeiffer second, and Daßler third. For Cetlinski, it was further disappointment as he placed fourth, as he had in the 400.
That night in the Olympic Village, Salnikov went to the cafeteria for a snack. When he entered all the athletes and coaches, from all nations and all sports, spontaneously stood and cheered the great Russian swimmer.

Vladimir Salnikov knew exactly how to win this race, and he executed his race plan to perfection. Absolutely excellent swim by one of the all-time great distance swimmers!!

Salnikov and Popov - two towering titans of swimming. Wake me up in the middle of the night and ask me what was *that* record and I will scream 14:58:27, 1980. It is such a shame USSR decided to skip 1984 Olympics. Morons politicians had no strategic vision. The best way to respond to US boycott was to take all the medals at LA rather than ruining athletes' lives.

Every single distance swimmer - every one - looks up to Salnikov. I'm just glad to have swum in a pool where he holds the record (Barnet, 1500m, sub 15)
He's been one of the best swimmer in the history. If he could have been a competitor in Los Angeles 1984, he would have been the only swimmer winning 3 Olimpic Finals in 1500 crawl, and probably even 2 gold medals in 400 metres. In 1983-1984, Salnikov was the King without any opposition in 400-1500 metres crawl. Never seen before, neiiher after, till today 2024!

Robbed of becoming the first man to win same event 3 Olympics in a row in the pool. Probably the most forgotten of all the greats. Should be up there with Thorpe but instead he's forgotten by most.

He's overated . in just 3 yrs 73 -76 Steve Holland and the 3 Americans , goodal,hacket and Shaw , took 50 secs off the world record going from 15 .52 to 15.02 in the 76 Olympics . in 12 yrs he wins the 88 Olympics by only 1.6 secs faster than Goodell s time in the 76 Olympics . 1.6 secs improvement in 12 years is pathetic
@@iang8169 moronic. He held the WR for over 9 years, 11 officially. And took 9 seconds off it after the drops had slowed significantly and he was also first to break the 15 min barrier. There were massive drops in many events during 60s and 70s as the sport quickly evolved. You’re just racist.

А интервью у Владимира Сальникова берет американец Джон Нейбер,4-кратный Олимпийский чемпион Монреаля-1976,специалист в плавание на спине,тогда 16-летний Владимир занял 5 место,а затем доминировал почти десятилетие.
Выдающийся спортсмен СССР. Всё и все были против него. А доплывал на морально - волевых. Тут видно, как на последних метрах 20 просел, но доплыл и победил.

Да там не только золото у Володи ушло, баскетбол, волейбол, гандбол, водное поло очень сильная сборная была, но товарищи из ЦК 4 мая 1984 года решили бойкотировать Олимпиаду в Л А, жаль
У Владимира,как минимум,2 золота ОИ 1984 ушло,не было у него тогда соперников на 400 и 1500,да и в эстафете 4×200,как минимум за медаль,наши могли побиться.

it's funny how back then going sub 15 in the 1500 free was still looked at as a unique achievement due to the fact that Salnikov was still the only man to do it. Now if you don't go sub 15 you don't even qualify for the games.

Выглядит чудовищно, в сравнении с современным плаванием. Человек просто е*шит 15 минут без перерыва, как кениец в беге. Минимум техники, максимум физухи. Уверен, каждый день он на тренировках плыл 18-20 км.
Да техники там, к сожалению, нет.
Андрей, здравствуйте. Интересно ваше мнение. Что вы имеете в виду под "чудовищно" и "минимум техники". На мой взгляд второразрядника(т.е. обывательский), хотя плавание Владимира и не такое "smooth", как сейчас, но тем не менее. И по поводу объёмов - тоже интересно. Почему именно такие?
Да раньше у большинства такая техника была, только на одной технике сейчас тоже шипко не уплывешь.
