Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

After Carson is killed, and his hologram repeats “I’m fine, how are you?” It gives similar vibes to “who turned out the lights?” In silence in the library/forest of the dead
You forgot a reference. He talks about mud creatures and calls them lovely girls. Thirteen's encounter with the Morax.
Yeah I find it odd that he left that one out. I loved that reference!
probably because the 13th era is erased from memory as it should be
@@HCProds1 no it's not.
@@friendlyotaku9525 it’s not, but it should be
Let's not forget the whole story is based on a classic who Easter egg when Tom Baker steps on a landmine in Genesis of the daleks.
It really isn't mate
@@jonylawson73 I mean, Moffat himself said that he got the idea from that classic moment
@@jonylawson73 It really is mate.
"Shut up and Google" could also be a reference to the Monk Trilogy
In one of the episodes (Either Extremis or Pyramid at the End of the World), the 12th Doctor puts all the files on the internet and says "Shut Up and Google"
Or the fact Capaldi's Doctor was just saying "Shut up" a lot
@@TomoBakerinio True 😂
I jumped for joy when he said “Fish fingers and custard”
NGL, I was smiling from ear to ear and crying like a baby when he said that Fish fingers and custard was his favorite.
Why? It was so forced
@@HappyBob701forced? It’s literally a passing comment lmao
@@EthIRL love to see you dr whoke glazers out in full force defending the nonsense that we have seen over the last few weeks
@@HappyBob701 huh? Please make sense when replying I don’t speak chronically online basement dweller
IIRC Moffat said in the video commentary that the song wasn't actually an intentional reference to the 2nd Doctor, it was entirely on accident
Also, my mum pointed out to me that the quote of the poem is kind of a misinterpretation. Because the idea is that "what survives of us is love" isn't authentic - the love in the statue is a lie, covering the true story, which is why the passage starts with "time has transfigured them into untruth."
So if that's what Moffat is going for, it's a bit of a darker line than it seems...
Also, the Anglican Marines and the whole idea of the Church being in control of the army is a reference to the angel two parter and a good man goes to war
Ah, but was it a coincidence? Was it subconscious?
We also had the Anglican Marines from Time of Angels and Good Man Goes to War (even if they were separated from the main church). We also had the line "Im a complicated space-time event" which is a direct quite from Flesh and Stone, in which the River was saying how she was a complicated space-time event like the Doctor
Also when the doctor is being scanned saying he’s a big complicated space time event that’s a reference to angles in the frostiest where the angles are trying to get the doctor in to the crack
6:14 the poem about himself felt like he was grounding himself in a comforting memory to me tbh
I remeber when people were sick of his writing then chris happened and now they miss it... It was so nice having him back this week!
Also when he was referring to Dad he was probably referring to the doctor's daughter and also indirectly mentioning the fact that he's a father to Susan's the mother or father
The 'long way' was used earlier in New Who - when Billy Shipton, the police officer in Blink (Series 3, Ep: 10) is sent back to 1969, The Doctor asks him to take a message to Sally Sparrow in 2007, and apologises as it is going to take (Billy) a long time.
Not necessarily references but there were several things that reminded me of Moffat era episodes: the holograms reminded me of the echoes in Silence in the Library, the deadly ambulances reminded me of the robot nurses in The Girl Who Waited, and of course he loves a good “companion dies and then comes back to life” moment.
a lot of the dialogue felt very twelfth doctor-y, which I loved! The Anglican Marines are also a reference to the Church of the Papal Mainframe and the series 5 weeping angel two parter + a good man goes to war
the doctor’s rambling about the word “smelted” felt very eleven too. really like how moffat is pulling influences from his previous stuff in such an engaging new story
The snow stopped moving like in the cold open of TUAT
Biggest Easter egg is Genesis Of the Daleks when the 4th Doctor is stuck on a land mine. Then saved by Harry Sullivan
Not every easter egg since you left out the reference to The Witchfinders "I've met sentient mud"
I'm pretty sure the army being ordained is a reference to Flesh and Stone / The Time of Angels, where they were ordained members of the army too.
BOOM was such a good episode!
The Skye boat song also featured in the power of the doctor - the master/doctor played it when Yas abandoned them on that asteroid
This episode was beautifully linked to Moffats era, which in my mind now cements him as the Doctor. Such references to past eras and incarnations keeps the fans love of the show going. This episode was required. If only for fans of Moffats show run. Of which I'm one of them. Luved the episode💙🙂
Great video, thanks, Tharries! Some fun easter eggs I hadn't noticed. I thought of one other time 'the long way around" was used, in The Girl in the Fireplace.
Am I wrong in saying the long way round was also used all the way back in curse of fatal death?
I love Easter egg videos. Thanks. Also, doesn't the 12th Doctor use "the long way around" when referring to escaping the confession dial in Hell Bent?
Thank the lord for that episode, it was great to watch a DW with some real jeopardy, and that didn't make me cringe at any point. Welcome back Moffmeister! (I'm never saying that again!)
Yea please don't.. yowch that was awkward.
5:02 I think that’s the Web of Fear not Fury from the Deep.
Now 7 months til Moffat returns for his 50th episode. Hopefully not for the last time
Apparently, he's writing the Christmas Episode this year
I think this is a great idea Tharries! Do more!
"dad skills"
Interesting that Ruby's story is linked to snow and a snowflake and Clara's story was linked to a leaf. Probably not intentional, but interesting to me.
There was also snow with significance in the doctor falls, & twice!
Great video Tharries (:
There's also the whole thing about the Military-Church, which, I don't know for sure if these soldiers are supposed to be part of the Papal Mainframe (Church of the Silence) specifically, but regardless, it felt like a very intentional call-back to Moffat's established concept of militarised clerics. We've seen that in The Time of Angels, A Good Man Goes to War and Time of the Doctor.
I jumped for joy when i saw the *Moffs* name!
He also says "the long way around" in Heaven Sent when he tells the child to warn the time lords he's on his way
*flicks nerd glasses cheekily*
Glad you mentioned It, cause I remember this line from the episode, but since no one had mentioned It yet, I was starting to think I made It up lol
Great video! Love your work!
Very nice stream, thank you Tharries you did a great job
I think you also missed the reference to Silence in the Library, where Canto kept repeating himself. Just like the person who just died in the space suit.
Please do the other episode with Easter eggs!
Loved this
The persuading a bomb not to explode that could destroy the planet seems awfully reminiscent of Amy speaking to Professor Kettlewell Android Bomb about love in Victory of the Daleks. The Doctor goes blind in Breathe because of corporate cutting the money to keep their staff alive and giving them Oxygen. The Blind Marine member dies because its not cost effective to keep.him alive.
I'm so here for this!
I think Sylveste said to Ace "Earth, the long way back" in Dragonfire.
When I heard the Doctor sing the song I immediately thought of Outlander, sorry! However, they had the Anglican Marines like, Time of the Angels, Flesh and Stone, and A Good Man Goes to War. Another thing I noticed that people have been talking about since the trailers of the 60th Anniversary came out was Ncuti in that landscape with the brownish color behind him. When it didn’t happen all sorts of conspiracies were going around. When we saw his Tardis looking abandoned people thought he was with the past Doctors but it turns out that he was just in this episode saying goodbye.
Wasn't it Web of Fear in the second doctor's era that he played it?
Didn't Capaldi also 'take the long way around'...or close to those words...at the end of Heaven Sent?
You do know that in devils chord it isn't the first time that the doctor has done that for a companion for a "Current event" ... In Pyramids of Mars the doctor takes Sarah Jane Smith to the future.... AND this is the episode with Sutech!! .... Susan Triad Tech???... he was imprisoned ... unable to move... I guess he's still waiting...
Some good Easter eggs as for going forwards I don't know why but I feel like ruby is roses daughter or at a bigger push Susan's
Susans mother is the doctor ..yes RTD really is doing that
@@jonylawson73 Oh wow. Nice theory. First time I've heard it. Is this just speculation, or is there supporting evidence?
didn’t clara say “the long way round” in hell bent as well or am i making that up?
Yes. Just before Clara and Me took off in their Tardis when Me asked where they were going.
@@xaiyab6892 i thought that’s when it was
5:01 Thazzies, bestie, it's The Web of Fear actually 😩
Ah balls I got confused my bad.
@@Tharries It's ok I forgive you king
First?
Yes!
Very disappointed in this episode ....it wasn't like nu Disney dr who at all
It was brilliant drama
Had no forced agenda
And received unanimous high praise
Very disappointed ..let's hope next week will be back on track with weakly plotted agenda driven pantomime
I'm loving the satire😁
What's funny about this comment is that I actually have seen some people trolling on the episode online. Some of them have even taken to calling it the 'worst of the bunch'.
Others still obviously didn't watch the episode, or pay that much attention to what was actually said within it, seeing it as an attack on Christianity. Well, no. It's made fairly explicit, the Doctor was calling out *blind* faith leading people to war. Not even necessarily religious faith.
I've also seen people calling out the joke he does with "Munday Sunday" calling it more lesbian pandering, when he was obviously not being serious and Munday is probably straight based on her behaviour in the episode. Maybe bi, but most likely straight.
I'm pretty sure a good chunk of those people aren't dealing with the show in good faith anyway, they just want their battlefield in the culture war and will deliberately look out for things to moan about. Which is pretty pathetic, really. Space Babies was bad enough on its own as it was, imho, before getting into culture war nonsense too.
Mate if you don’t like the show, just stop watching. I’m sick of all you bad faith fans, you so obviously know nothing about the show.
News flash! Doctor Who has pushed “agendas” since 1963.
"No agenda" the episode is LITERALLY anti-capitalist and anti-war and critiques blind faith.
Imagine complaining about "agendas" and "woke" in 2024.
