I like all the Sumos. The new 5th gen looks really nice. But the 3rd gen green got my heart and wrist especially on the Uncle Straps tire tread rubber strap.
You are right, Seiko brought me into the watch modding world that I love. You can mix a monster dial with an skx case and countless hands and bezels and bezel inserts. Also the dress kx, srpe watches are in the modding realm that is Seiko.
Seiko sumo would always have a place in my heatt, one of my favourite dive watch from seiko. Seeing the latest upgrades on this Sumo model.. definitely worth the wait 👍
This newSumo also has diashield or super hard coating. I own the SBDC033 Blumo and still my favorite and best watch I own . I also added a Marine Master clasp to my Sumo stock bracelet as well.
I have the second gen Blumo and I must say the value of the past generations just felt so good. Could not be beat. I think some of the upgrades are appreciated but not sure they were worth the loss in that extreme value of yesteryear.
I have the 'Hulk' 3rd gen Sumo, from the first Sumo series that gained sapphire glass and the 6r35. (ref # SBDC081) It's one of my fave divers. These newest iterations look really, really good imo. More of an evolutionary change than a revolutionary one to the Sumo and a win for Seiko, I'd say. In your backstory about early divers you owned, when speaking of and showing that 2nd gen Monster I also caught that Transocean to the right of it. That's a beautiful diver as well. 👌
I bought a 2gen sbdc069 blue coral from Japan. Big, over the top blue. The lume is crazy strong. Squished numbers, signed crown. How does a watch this chunky and big, fit and feel so good? Got to say I am a fan of the new one. But, it needs Squished numbers!
Love it. The Sumo has always sat above the Samurai, Monster and Turtle in terms of quality and price, but positioned below the 62mas and Willard. I guess with the minimal upgrades made to the previous generation Sumo, Seiko have positioned it towards the higher end of their mid range divers in price. However, I think the standard Sumo remains better value for money.
Since I saw your video i own the same Seiko as yours sbdc069 and I mode a safari Cristal now I’m not sure if I should sell it and buy the latest sumo or keep it 🤷🏻♂️
Right now on Ebay, all but one of the Gen 2 Sumos cost more than the 350USD I paid for one five years ago. Some cost more than 700USD. My Sumo was 400 bucks new; now they are charging more than a THOUSAND!!? A year ago, I paid $260 for a near mint SKX.. That was a bargain then. What is Seiko doing?
Hello bruce, first of all thx a lot for the great content. I enjoy all your videos. I thought already since quite long time adding a seiko sumo to my collection. Just never thought about how it would look like in my 17.5cm wrist. Give me a feedback if u can and wish u all the best from europe (luxembourg). Thx a lot again
Like the presentation and comments. Not here to dog Seiko as 5 of my 15 $250+ watches are Seikos and my daily is a Seiko. I feel anything above the "5" line should have a sapphire crystals and the mods you bought would not have costed nearly the same for Seiko to upgrade either but I get your point. I don't think the price increases are 100% warranted but understand an increase just not to the level they are at many price points.
Nice, but not high on value. Regarding what else you could get, I would mention the king turtle or Samurai, featuring similar improvements (albeit with a more base movement) for 1/2 the price. Wait for a heavy discount and then, maybe....
Pre prospex is gen 1. Gen 2 would be the same only prospex (like the blue coral in this video). Gen 3 has the more conservative font and new hands/markers/fixed ending. Gen 4 has the sapphire upgrade, cyclops, waffle dial, and 6R35. The one shown in this video is gen 5 with ceramic, sapphire, bracelet, dial, etc.

I currently own the blue Sumo Gen 1 pre pro. Love it and she’s mint

Was great to see the different sumos back to back, really helps highlight how much nicer the newest model is
Agree completely

I was waiting for Bruce's video of the Sumo... Congrats Bruce! :)
I'm holding out for an SLA Ziratsu Sumo with 8L35 movement. I've already got a name for it, the Yokozuna. Talk to Seiko for me Bruce.
My first Seiko was the Sumo Gen 3(?). Love it.

Gotta admit, that’s a really nice looking watch! 👍
They have become so much more better i Quality and im about to go get one!!
I can totally relate. The sumo started it all for me.
This newSumo also has diashield or super hard coating. I own the SBDC033 Blumo and still my favorite and best watch I own . I also added a Marine Master clasp to my Sumo stock bracelet as well.
Great review Bruce, the Sumo is a beautiful watch. Seiko used to be the "value" leader but their current prices are hard to justify.
BEST WATCH REVIEW I HAVE SEEN ON RUclips..! As a SIEKOpsycho..! LOVE UR Intro/
Thank you!

Owning the Blumo as well I totally agree with your thoughts .
The Sumo is a magnificent watch. It definitely has the best case design and finishing for the price and even several price points above it.

I really dig this sumo and think at this price point, seiko shines.
You should look into 4K video, it would make those macro shots pop!
I've been needing a new setup for a while!

Just like a sumo player...this watch is heavy, over 200g?

Man... If only a coupla mm smaller. Love sumo design but way too big for my wrist.
Pretty sure this is the Gen 4 Sumo

The skinny bracelet is a real eye sore… should have been at least 22/24mm
Still got my generation one Seiko blumo.. the sumo lost some of its charm with the upgrades and price increase imo
So much poverty in this world, and you are buying watches, seems utterly wasteful to me
