  • A film by Simon Hipkins
    In the heart of Bulgaria's Rose Valley, Irina is desperate to give her four-year-old daughter, Stefi, a better start in life.
    She is struggling single mother, working two jobs to put food on the table. Her main source of income comes from her dangerous work at a weapons factory where she measures and packs gunpowder into artillery shells.
    Struggling to pay the rent, bills, and Stefi's kindergarten fees, she moves out of her parents' rural village to be closer to her work - despite not knowing whether she can afford it.
    Her only respite is singing, a talent taught to her by her late grandfather, which she uses to sing for extra money in local restaurants.
    But as the rent and bills stack up, Irina is forced to take on a third job offering high-interest loans to equally desperate friends and family.
    This is an intimate story about poverty and the price a mother is prepared to pay to ensure a better life for her child.

    Another provocative video from Al Jazeera about Bulgaria.
    I was born and grown up in town of Kazanluk.
    Firstly the "village" shown in the very beginning of this film is Gipsy Camp located 15 km easterly from the town and 20km from Dubovo (her village).
    Secondly the safety records for the fabric is excellent and I don't understand what she is afraid of.
    Its more likely she can get poisoned from the quantity of cigarets she has taken daily, than something to happen while she is working.
    Well, I agreed is not easy to be a lonely mother, but this is not the point!
    I am sure Al Jazeera paid her well!

      The safety record if the Arsenal factory may be excellent,however,there is never a garantee that accidents wont happen in the future.And being a single mother and working at all these places to survive is the point.Is how much Al Jazeera paid, the most inportant thing you got out of the film?

      +Zlatomir Georgiev i have never been to bulgaria but i could still tell the editing was over-dramatizing it to look like something out of BORAT! i even laughed at one point - no thinking person is going to judge bulgaria as a whole from this portrayal...one thing the director couldn't edit out is how spirited and bright and ambitious this mother-daughter team are! and look at that immaculate nursery school where the kids all look happy and healthy - it looks amazing! any kid from any country would love to go there!
      i love al jazeera, but this indirect self-congratulatory programming (by constantly putting other regions in a negative light) gets really transparent and tiresome after a while - if you don't know what i mean already then you will soon if you keep watching!!!

    • @zlatomirgeorgiev
      @zlatomirgeorgiev 8 лет назад +3

      Nina Tzalova I've got my point and You can read it again from my comment above. Being single mother is not just to have a baby/child. Obviously she didn't think about this on first place! No one asked her to work somewhere. This was her choise and many people worked in this firm.
      She presented the life in this beautiful town in comprehensive way, starting with pictures not from the town and explained how she "sacrifice" every day to go for work.
      She could have better education first, so she can get better job. She could stop smoking to save some money.
      No need to complain and no need to turn the page upside down.

      +Zlatomir Georgiev
      I obviously read your point and I don't agree with it.1.This is a documentary about the girl,not the city.2.I suggest we leave behind the judgement of what somebody should or shouldn't have done in their life and keep our judgements and advises to ourselves.3.Whether Kazanluk is a beautiful city or not is not the question,life is hard in the small cities and even more for single mothers.And last,but not least,Im no fan of Al-Jazeera TV,but this movie is realistic and touching.Whether you like it or not.
      Pozdravi :)

    • @zlatomirgeorgiev
      @zlatomirgeorgiev 8 лет назад +1

      +Nina Tzalova 1. Is this really a documentary about the girl?
      If yes, could you tell me who does care about her when the mother is busy to serve her customers during the evening? Why there is no even a word about it?
      2. There is no judgment here! I just shared my opinion. I agreed it is hard to be a lonely mother, but it is hard everywhere in the world, no matter are you living in Kazanlak, Sofia or London.
      When this video became alive in youtube everyone is free to share its opinion, suggestion or even judgment. This lady made the video public and it is normal people to agreed or disagreed with it.
      3. And Yes, Kazanlak is also questioned on the video, not right away but mentioned Arsenal in it. It leave wrongly picture that the factory is not safe enough and people working there are not secure. The only unsafety here is that she works during the evening till late and start working in the factory early in the morning. Her quality of work can be highly questionable, don't you think so?
      I know I would not change your opinion and you will not change mine.
      I suggest you to stop at this point and keep everyone with its own opinion.
      Всичко добро и Поздрави! :)

    More power to you girl! It's so saddening how We as humans focus more on issues that divide us (e.g. Politics, Nationalism, Religion, Trade disputes, etc.) instead of issues that all of us (irrespective of geography, religion, culture, etc.) face. Issues like Poverty, and trying to create a better world for everyone.
    No matter its a Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, or a follower of any religion.. He/She has to fight day and night to look after his/her loved ones, just like this brave woman is doing.

    As the saying goes: "The truth always hurts". That is the real life picture for 3/4 (75%) of Bulgarians; In the so called Republic of Mafia country; joined 01/01/2007 this strong European Union. I am also from a poor village; Thank God my parents healthy and moral people, and not wealthy and crooked! I am so happy i realised the nationwide situation back in 2009 and left to England, worked very hard always, even alongside my 4year degree in Oxford. I am missing my family, relatives and friends; BUT i am also aware how life is back in Република България. its the harsh reality - Bulgaria is the place where corruption, prostitution, drugs, guns, fraud etc are imbedded in everything in the public and private sectors. I hope all those that suck the blood of the poor and honest die off once forever AND new chapter is written by those who return and dedicate to make their homeland a better place FOR ALL.
