- According to The Economist, more than a million Chinese households a month have moved into the middle class since 2000.
Like many other young Chinese, Chen Guojie is desperate to earn a wage and stand on his own feet.
He has no desire to take over the tiny silk factory his parents risked everything to build in eastern China. He wants a higher paid, less stressful job in the city.
But achieving the Chinese dream isn't easy.
Witness follows Guojie over four years as he fights the urge to drop out of university, tackles problems at home and finds the love of his life.
A coming of age story about big dreams and difficult decisions in a country changing at an extraordinary pace.

im chinese and this story really moves my heart. for lower class people the struggle to move into middle class is very real, and the sacrifices involved are very personal.

As a Brit on our tiny island I find these documentaries fascinating. It's so interesting watching people try and hurdle and navigate their career where there are often so much pressure to stand out from so many equally capable candidates/rivals/friends. Is there a nack to this or does every one work hard as stink making it inevitably harder for everyone involved?

Don't make fun of him. He must have suffered 3rd degree burns to his face and had plastic surgery. His life must be hard enough as it is without people making fun of him. At least he's still trying to make it academically and has not given up on life.
