I love reading everyone's post about what's the best seed. If you know anything about soil and planting, the right seed depends on your area and soil condition. What's good for your property might not be ideal for my property. Wheat needs better PH. If you have trouble raising PH, Winter Rye might be a better choice. It all depends on soil! If you are buying a bad of cheap seed and throw it down right before the season, your wasting time! Speak to some of the old-timer farmers in your area, You will be surprised how much you can learn.
If I knew anything about soil and planting? That’s epic. Let’s see we plant over 50 acre of food plots a year between multiple different states with all different types of soils. I’ve been planting food plot for over 15 years with great results. It’s not so much the area it’s the planting method and following the property steps. Yeah wheat likes a higher ph sure but it will still grow in a lower one. Also speaking of knowing anything about soil if you have low ph soils you aren’t doing it right. Just saying. Follow the steps to raise it up! There’s also a lot of situations full sun or not. Obviously someone can’t plant brassicas in no sun they need full sun. Wheat and rye can grow in low light situations but it’s a plant so it still needs sun. We can talk about this all day.

Gotcha. If you are having issues with raising PH I would look into your CEC levels and organic matter. Also every time you add granular fertilizer you drop ph. It’s full of fillers and salts. To offset that we also add some lime every time we fertilize
I love cereal rye aka winter rye. I have seen so many people think they are buying that and buy gulf annual ryegrass. Then they spend 3 years trying to kill it. I also love oats here in Alabama. I do have wheat in most of my blends, but I found if my ph isn't high enough my winter wheat struggles down here.
I understand what you’re saying, but past two years we’ve had zero rain in NW TN. Cereal rye, oats have been only salvage crop after years of drilling very expensive brassica blend, lime, fertilizer and soil samples. Zero rain has been devastating. Wasted $1,000 of dollars in expensive seed from highly reputable seed companies only to watch it fail miserably. Did everything right, that I’ve done in past with success, only to go to winter wheat/oats and yes, rye broadcasted that ultimately salvaged my season in September after summer crop dried up to nothing when rain returns . Drought is the issue and seems to be getting worse every season. Front 60 acres of late beans have failed epically. I’ve spent thousands on high quality seed, followed best practice planting (drill) and timing only to watch it dry-up and produce nothing. Agree with box store outdated and ineffective cheap seed. Thanks for the video. Another stressful, fingers crossed hail-Mary 2 years in a row. Usually plant it on 7 acres and so far has saved my season and provided late-season food that has worked some.
Killed the biggest deer or my life with a bow that went missing for a year. I didn’t even soul test or anything. Tilled,planted my first food plot an he showed up to eat in the fall one evening. But I did use good seed tho an nothing that had rye grass
Those companies will continue to sell that crap until everyone stops buying from them! Everyone needs to use their local feed mill for seeds. Pay quarter the price for more seed!
Rye grass is actually a really good food source for deer in the winter, we have a half arce of rye grass that we will see a bunch of deer in the winter because the rye stays green and I found good sheds out there, but I also have other food plots for other times in the season such as alfalfa plot and a brassica and turnip and clover which seems to bring the deer in
You sure it’s rye grass and not rye grain? If deer are eating rye grass they are starving with a very poor habitat. It’s not different then them eating regular grass in someone’s yard lol
Your nocking winter rye over winter wheat doesn't apply to the northern states where winter wheat freezes out prior to hunting season. You need to include all and explain this or state you are talking about warmer states.
Not really. I get what you’ve heard in the past and I’m sorry you can’t except someone else’s perspective on things. There’s literally only a couple degree difference which isn’t anything noticeable. Winter wheat doesn’t freeze out prior to hunting season lol. Wheat or RYE will Eventually freeze out and become unpalatable around the same time. Warm days it will perk right up.

How do you feel about blends that mix grains such as winter rye or oats with brassiscas. In my experience they pull to much from the greens. I love winter grains, theyre hardy and fast growing. But alot or mixes mix em with greens and that could be a problem. The brassiacas will still grow but maybe not to the fullest. I like surrounding my greens with a winter grain.
@@C.Adams82 I think it depends on the goals. Yeah they can pull from the brassicas some but I think it’s still beneficial in some cases. If I’m planting 1/2 acre plot of brassicas I can mix in about 25 pounds of wheat and it works perfect. Some blends are over taken with to much grains for sure . For the guys saying they should never be in a mix it’s a marketing tactic to get you to buy there seed so they can “be different”

Yes for sure. Winter wheat will green up before anything in the spring. So you’ll have weeks to a couple months of extra food. Plant in fall and will get them through the winter
Great video. I'm glad I did my soil test on my plot of freshly cleared land. Whitetail intitute told me I had a ph of 5.3 and I had to put 5600 pounds of lime per acre down. The soil test is so easy also. Do you need any winter Austrian peas I ended up buy to much size I had to down size the plot due to the farmer needing the field I was going to plant?
If you want a great summer food plot go to the isle over and get a bag of bird seed and broadcast it. Straight up like you would put in grandmas bird feeder bird seed. I drill it 12# to the acre so It’s roughly $3/acre. They HAMMER it all late season.

You said you prefer wheat, another guy in video said he preferred winter rye and also hate rye grass. I’m in south Mississippi. We’ve planted the bags that have the seed already mix like a 7 way game mix, we’ve mixed the different seeds ourself, we have clover plots and we have also planted gulf rye grass. We saw no better results here with wheat, oats, ect vs gulf rye grass. Some have went back to nothing but gulf. I still use a variety. We didn’t start our testing yesterday I’ve been doing this about 30 years. My biggest 8 point points last meal was gulf rye grass, only deer I saw that morning and he came running to it. Maybe different in other areas. Best attraction I’ve seen here is a legal corn feeder but my grass plots work well also

Winter Wheat better than Winter Rye?? I have heard the opposite where Rye is better than Wheat. I have the ability to plant both so I should choose Wheat here in Missouri? Any other seeds to include in an 1/8 acre wooded plots?
If you ask 20 people you’ll get 20 different answers. Wheat rye wheat rye bla bla lol. In my honest humble opinion wheat is better then rye. With that said it’s always best to plant a mix wheat, rye and oats. Rye is very bitter. Yes deer will eat it if that’s all they have. Wheat is better because it’s more palatable. Take a bite of each and you’ll see lol.
Also keep in mind I’m talking about winter rye in the comment above. I’m talking about rye grass in the video. Rye grass is junk wouldn’t plant it if someone paid me.

Don’t underestimate rye grain, especially on poor soil. We have taken many deer in rye fields. Oats in snow, rye on warm days.
Great video Dave. I love using Cereal Grains like Wheat, Oats and Rye Grain. They come up quick, very patitable and grows in low pH soils.

No they are the ones that came with it. Boominator 1400’s I believe. It came with a 5gpm pump but it went bad last year replaced it with a 4.5 GPM.
I got a question for you. What kind of Sprayer do you have on the back of your 4-wheeler? I need to get one and I'm like you got put TLC in my food plots and soil test.
I don’t remember the brand but I built the manifold on the back. It’s a 4.5 gpm pump with a 180degree boominator nozzle

You should always plant about 55 days before your average first frost. You can spray when plants are about 4-6 inches tall

The same as anywhere else. 45-55 days before tour average first frost.
